Book Description
In the ten years since the previous Koala book was published in the Australian Natural History Series by Lee and Martin, a great deal of basic research has been done on the koala. The conservation status of wild populations has been a topic of much debate and this new edition includes maps of the current distribution of the species and a commentary on the status of wild populations. Other recent studies have enhanced our knowledge in the areas of reproductive biology, endocrinology, energetics, and growth. Facts from all these studies have been woven into the narrative of this new natural history of the species. Headway has also been made in our understanding of koala disease, particularly Chlamydia, and this new information has caused a revision in our thinking as to its role and impact on koala populations. The book includes a chapter on koala population biology which is necessary for an understanding of the many complex issues for the management of the species. It concludes with a discussion of the most difficult management issues: conservation of sparsely distributed populations and the problem of overabundance.

Customer Reviews:
Exceptional.......2007-01-16
We just returned from Tuscany & Umbria, our second trip using a Karen Brown book exclusively to select places to stay. If you prefer a "typical" tourist hotel, this book is not for you. In our experience, Karen Brown recommendations match their descriptions in the book. As a result we have enjoyed amazing and charming places which have enhanced our travel and enjoyment; places we might not have found through our own research.
disappointed.......2006-11-05
I was disappointed with this purchase. I felt that the book was more about where to stay than things to do and see. It was more of an advertisement for places along with a request to mention the author's name in order to get a discount. It felt more like an effort to promote the book than to offer quality information about how to visit Tuscany. We did go to Tuscany, and had a wonderful trip. We left the book at home because it provided nothing of interest to us. We ended up using other books. If you are just looking for a place to stay and do not have access to the internet or other books, you might find it useful, otherwise, my advice is to skip it.
Great information!.......2006-08-16
This book listed many interesting places to stay. Several of them were also recommended by friends who have travelled to Italy.

Book Description
A different time...
A different place...
What if you were there?
More than 200 years ago, two thousand people lived in the town of Williamsburg, Virginia.
If you lived back then
What would your house look like?
What games and sports would you play?
Would you go to school?
What happened when you were sick or hurt?
This book tells you what it was like to grow up in colonial days, before there was a United States of America.
Customer Reviews:
Very well done!.......2007-09-19
Presented in a lively question and answer fashion, this volume satisfies curiosities that both children and adults frequently have about life in the colonial capital of Virginia.
Family, work, food, government, fashion, and more are all presented in an easily understandable and fascinating manner. Well done!
Great for Intercultural Communication in ESL.......2006-03-25
I'm teaching Early American History to Japanese adults who have an "elementary" level of English and virtually no experience in studying American history. The "If You Lived in ....." books targeted for US elementary school children is ideal for college students in Japan. Just the title causes discussion. eg. Why do you spell Willimasburg with ..burg but then spell Pittsburgh with "h"?
One of my favorite books growing up..........2004-07-12
One of my favorite books growing up was a companion book in this series, called If You Lived in Colonial Times. The illustrations in all of these books is the best! Detailed drawings show what clothes the adults and kids would be wearing. Each page answers a different question like, "What happened when a child misbehaves?" Kids can learn a lot from these books. I plan to collect all of them for my children.
Women and girls in Colonial America.......2002-08-18
This book tells what it would be like if you lived in Colonial Williamsburg. Some pages even have little rhymes that go with the topics. This poem is about what women and girls wore:
"Little Polly Flinders
Sat among the cinders
Warming her pretty little toes.
Her mother came and caught her
And whipped her little daughter,
For spoiling her nice new clothes."
I recommend that you read it because it's a really interesting book and it tells about really interesting topics. I really enjoyed it.

DELIVERY MET EXPECTATIONS.......2005-09-01
I was originally given an expected delivery time of 3-4 weeks. The book arrived in just over a week. It was packed well and arrived in pristine shape.
Overall - an excellent experience that I'll be willing to repeat.
Great beginners book for natives.......1999-05-10
5 stars for a beginner who has never kept an aquarium, 3 stars for everyone else. The first half of this book covers the basics, which was of no use to me. The second half of the book covers the fish, and is pure gold, I just wish there was more of it.
This is not a book to buy for the pictures, the photography is nothing to get excited about. Most of the pictures are small with poor color reproduction.
A worthy sequel to his Piranha book........1998-11-03
Dave Schelser has done it again. His "Native Fish" book covers just about everything the enthusiast could want to know. Schelser describes everything from setting up the aquarium, to collection, feeding, and disease. A worthy sequel to his book "Pirahna: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual," also published by Barron's. All 133 photographs are taken by Schelser himself, whether in the wild or in the lab. One would never guess there were so many small but amazingly attractive fish native to North America without reading this book. Bravo Dave!!
The Benchmark for Aquarist who keeps local species........1998-10-28
this book is a throw back in many ways. Much like the old Innes books , Schleser's book starts out with the fundamentals. Topics like why to keep natives, fish taxonomy, conservation issues, collecting information, aquarium keeping tips and such cover the first 8 chapters. I like that. It starts the reader off right with a good foundation. Instead of just dumping you into a glossy book of pretty pictures of fish , this book starts you off with the how's and the why's of native fish keeping. This old fashioned nuts and bolts approach gives the reader a better chance to become a conservation minded Aquarist instead of just a pet store consumer. For Conservation efforts to be a success it must reach the grassroots level. The average person must be able to apply in a practical way, learned conservation ethics. I like to apply my housewife from Dubuque Iowa test to any book about collecting and keeping fish. If a housewife (or hubby) can read this book and apply it to activities with their local youth group, school or their own children then this book is a success. Well following my Dubuque test , this book is winner.
After 8 chapters of the basics , chapter 9 is all about fish. It breaks the fish down into basic types and goes into excellent detail about suitable aquarium species within each genus. Almost 100 pages is spent highlighting North America's unique aquatic heritage. Beautiful and obscure fish like the banded pygmy sunfish, dollar sunfish, gulf darter , Flagfin shiner , Fundulus Chrysotus , brindeled madtom and scores of other unloved North American fishes get the exposure they deserve . Full color photo's , range maps and rearing information follow each species. If you are interested in Longear Sunfish for example (page 139) you get 2 pages of great information , 3 photo's of the various strains out there and the basic information to keep , rear and enjoy this temperate fish. That's the kind of stuff anyone interested in Native Fish wants needs and got's to have. Get this book it's a winner.

Beautiful Pictures.......2002-11-07
This book is very nice with respect to the orchid pictures they have in here. Very nice for a coffee table center piece and an excellent gift to inspire a soon to be orchid lover. They would be absolutely awestruck with their beauty and these photos bring out the best qualities in the flowers. It gives a good description but maybe a little too simple for those in the advance stages of growing. They do, though, have some nice pictures of fairly rare orchids. For example, there is a picture of a Cymbidium canaliculatum there that is absolutely beautiful (not variety sparkesii!. Growing tips are okay, but the book is more for the identification part and the enjoyment of the family Orchids.

Orchid beauty and Book beast.......2001-12-04
OK
but not what I was expecting, most of my plants didn't survive using their method as opposed to guidence from actual orchid growers.
Some Laelia's did grow using his techniques, whilst other methods from other authors didn't work to laelia's.
Which is a good think for this book!!!
Amazing pictures!.......2001-10-27
If you are looking for a book with great clear pictures of the
many different types of orchids this is the book for you!
It is great for Identifying the different species you see and want to know what they are.
Has some informational parts about the orchid and how it has been used over time and civilizations. GREAT BOOK!

Customer Reviews:
Thanks Dave.......2007-08-03
Dave, Thanks so much for taking the time to put your lessons and memories on paper. I have very fond memories of J Bar D when I was there in '81- '82. I have shared my recollection of the ranch with my kids and my co-workers for years and I'm so glad I found your stories in book form. I have a lot of wonderful pictures of that time in my life, but my treasure is a cow tooth from the ranch, I always keep it on my desk. It reminds me daily of what's important in life, it mentally gets me out of the city and back to Ione. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for Dave's unique, patient, loving way he helped you look inside of yourself to become a better person. This book can inspire every parent, teenager or person going through a struggle to see how you have it within yourself to make the world a better place. I don't think Dave could ever count how many lives he has touched, thank you again Dave for remaining in my heart for this lifetime and changing my and my childrens course.
Everytime I cook butterscotch pudding, I think of you, with love to you and your family.
This is a good book for laughing and crying........2005-06-18
I know Dave personally and when he finished his book I had to have it. I found the book very entertaining and interesting. Dave took his life and told it in a way only Dave could do. I really like the chapters when he worked at the school for the deaf and blind. There was one part were Dave seemed to dwell on some issues, that he could have shortened up a little bit. All in all I found the book hard to put down once I started to read it. Thanks Dave for this wonderful autobiougraphy.
Childhood Memories.......2004-03-04
WOW!! This book brought back so many childhood memories. During my childhood, Dave's son Brad was my best friend. Our respective families were very close and spent many days and hours together.
With first hand knowledge, I remember some of the events that occurred on the boys ranch during long summer days and weekends. Some of my best childhood memories hearken back to time I spent on the ranch.
While many years have passed and I have lost contact with Dave and his family, I can truly say they were, and I know, still are awesome people.
From the day our families first met in church, until the last time I visited the ranch, I always felt like I had a second home there.
Jane and Jerry Farhenbacher are two other wonderful people whose good deeds and actions must not be overlooked. They were truly wonderful people.
I wish that everyone who reads this book could have spent a day with Dave and his family on the boys ranch. Through an experience such as this, I know that anyone with an open mind would have come away from his or her visit with a renewed sense of spirit for the American dream.
If the news and print media spent more time focusing on the benevolent deeds and actions of families such as the Goodwin's, America would follow the examples set by them and others thus creating a more harmonious, hard working, generous society.
Bravo Dave!
Respectfully,
Navin
Where is Volume 2?.......2004-02-26
This book talks of a family, a dream, the life of a man, his heart, his soul and most importantly his commitment to mankind. If you want to understand Dave Goodwin, read this book. Knowing he and his wife for many years now, this book is a remarkable story of who they really are, true Americans with hearts as selfless as the sun on a cloudless day. This book had us crying, laughing and wondering how on earth he was able to find the words to express the way he did....in looking back, that's just the way he is. Volume 2 must come soon.
A must read!.......2003-11-25
This book tells the amazing true story of a wonderful man. It is such an inspiration. This is volume one of two and I am eager to read the next book. It reminded me of All Things Great and Small. If you liked that series of books, you will love this book! What a great read and a great gift! I highly recommend it.
