Book Description
This book is about the rate of molecular evolution in mammals. Various methods of comparative analysis have been applied to different kinds of molecular data in attempts to resolve the issue. The choice of molecular data, and more importantly, the different assumptions made in the analysis have resulted in contrasting conclusions being drawn. These assumptions are critically evaluated and draw the conclusion that for "silent" DNA the molecular clock hypothesis cannot be rejected. For amino acids the clock hypothesis is rejected and this appears to reflect the action of natural selection. The implications of the DNA clock in relation to the pattern of mammalian evolution and the process of mutation are discussed.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful country!!!.......2007-08-16
This guide has been very useful to see most of the country. The prices are not exact (now everything is a bit more expensive) and I miss the dance of the Lipizzaner Horses because of a mistake in the timetable, what a pity!!!! But, in general, the guide is excellent
Gianni Italy.......2005-06-18
Lots of news and helpful book to read if you are going to visit this country.
I reccomand it to everyone!
Still the best guide to Slovenia.......2004-12-09
I took this book with me on a trip to Slovenia in September-October 2004, when it was hot off the presses. My travels didn't cover the whole country, just the western half, so I can't speak for all of the book's recommendations. But, in general, I found it immensely helpful, both for planning my trip and for day-to-day guidance while traveling. Some comments:
1. Slovenia's currency hasn't stabilized yet, so expect prices to vary upward, especially now that the Euro is so high against the dollar. Big deal; it's still a comparatively inexpensive country. (I went to a rip-off-the-tourists but very good restaurant in Ljubljana, had a full dinner and a half-liter of wine -- and my total bill was $20!)
2. The famous disappearing Lake Cerknicka does indeed disappear for a large part of the year, so it's likely that all you'll see is a bumpy plain covered with grass. On a related subject, the Soca River valley is beautiful, but in the fall the water is low, so anyone expecting a kayaker's paradise would be disappointed.
3. Renting a car is expensive, and the train and bus system, while not perfect, is still very good. So I used this book to plan ahead: I took public transportation most of the time, then rented a car for one day to visit some areas that are difficult or impossible any other way (e.g., the church at Hrastovlje, which is amazing even if you're not a fan of medieval religious art).
4. The church of St. John the Baptist near Lake Bohinj, with the interesting medieval wall paintings, is closed for repairs, completion date uncertain. However, if you walk up the road to Stara Fuzina, the church there has some arguably medieval paintings in the front porch; it's a lovely walk, too, and you can continue on to Studor and admire the antique hayracks.
5. I totally agree with the book's description of the Skocjan Caves: I'm not a big fan of caves, but these were special, and fully worth the effort. (The tour requires considerable walking and step-climbing, so it's not for the weak or the faint-hearted.) The bus access to the site is poor, but some tour companies run day trips from Ljubljana, and the prices I saw were pretty reasonable.
6. The book's restaurant recommendations are generally excellent: Delfin, in Piran, has the best grilled squid on the planet, and the mussels aren't bad either.
7. Fall can be rainy: I encountered a couple of wet, chilly days that made me wish I'd brought waterproof shoes and a heavier raincoat. But, the rest of the time, it was warm enough that I wore sandals.
8. In the fall, many museums and other sights cut back their hours drastically, so be sure to check before you go, especially if a long trip is involved. (I arrived too late for the day's last tour of Sneznik Castle; on the other hand, I visited the Dormouse Museum -- which is utterly mad and not to be missed -- and hung out in the pub next door with the locals practicing their English on me, and that was way more fun than seeing some rich German family's old furniture!)
Terribly updated and poorly organized.......2004-09-27
Slovenia review.
We traveled for two weeks in Slovenia in August 2004, one month after the publish date for this current edition. Lonely Planet putting a 2004 date on this book is egregious; most information was completely out of date. We found prices to be off by as much as 50%, some hotels and restaurants were non-existent, and tourist offices had moved. The amount of inaccuracies were far too great for a one-month-old book, even allowing for several months of "print time."
Additionally, the organization of the book was terrible. The chapters of the book were aligned to Slovenia's political jurisdictions instead of organizing the content by the country's regions that a visitor would be interested in. For example, the Julian Alps information was split into two chapters (nonconsecutive), each of which were not limited to the Julian Alps. The Karst region, likewise, was split across two unrelated chapters (one of which had some of the above Julian Alps information.) So using this book requires endless flipping back and forth, and scouring the insufficient index. Perhaps most frustrating was that Slovenia is best visited by private car (limited train service, decreasing bus routes), and while so many other Lonely Planet volumes are organized in a linear manner, as if driving, this one was not.
Slovenia has so many wonderful tourist information centers with great free booklets on accommodations and attractions, and the staff is unbelievably friendly. If the author had only updated his listings with this free information, this book would be more useful. However, armed with this knowledge, you can make good use of the information from these centers, and choose a guidebook with more colorful writing (such as Rough Guide) to take with you, passing on this poorly organized and outdated book.
Slovenia through pink-colored glasses.......2002-02-24
If this third edition of Lonely Planet Slovenia is anything like the first, it warrants a complete overhaul of the section entitled "WW II & the Partisan Struggle." Much misinformation has been disseminated since the end of that war, and only recently has the truth emerged concerning the true patriots of Slovenia. It is obvious that the author was given false and outdated information, and he therefore unwittingly perpetuates the myth of the Slovenian "collaborators."

Book Description
Using a lively question-and answer-format, the author explains the American Revolution not only as a war for freedom which the American colonies fought against the British, but also as a "civil" war between the Patriots and those colonists who remained loyal to King George III. Special attention is paid to the role of children in the war and to the issues affecting them: What was life like before the Revolution? How did your life change after the Declaration of Independence? Would you have seen a battle?...Gone to school? Colorful accounts of famous figures, and words and expressions (such as "cowboy" and "John Hancock") that were coined during the Revolution enliven the text and enable readers to feel some connection with the people of the period.
Customer Reviews:
BOTH sides of the story!.......2007-10-02
Kay Moore's excellent book is of tremendous value to young students of history because it contributes something rare for younger readers -- some insight into the other side of the story of the American Revolution.
Not every colonist was in favor of war, and many fled for their lives rather than refuse to follow their conscience. Many in the colonies felt they owed their comfortable lifestyle to England, and had no intention of biting the hand that had fed them so well. They also felt that they had the rights and privilidges of free British men and women, and needed no rebellion to secure it. Much like the Civil War, families were torn apart by this issue, sometimes father against son, and brother against brother. To not tell this story would be an injustice to both sides.
Kate Moore's magnificent book, If You Lived At The Time of The American Revolution is an absolute must for students. Adults can learn a great deal from it as well.
excellent information.......2007-07-29
This book covers all of the information on the American Revolution but it is super long so it's an excellent resource but is not a read aloud unless you choose only a couple chapters at a time.
Terribly one sided account of the Revolution........2006-07-30
According the the Author's note, the purpose of this book is to show what America lost by winning the Revolution. She portrays the loyalists having been treated unfairly by the patriots, to the point of not being able to send their children to school, not being able to speak freely, and being in fear of being attacked and having their homes burned down. She fails to mention any dangers faced by the Patriots. This book is horribly one sided. I bought this for my neice, but would be ashamed to actually give it to her as a gift.
History from different perspectives!.......2003-10-11
I thought that this book was a great example of how all of our history books should be written: from multiple perspectives! All we ever hear about our history is the positive patriotic version that is sugar coated and mostly false. For once, someone has written a story for children that shares both sides of the story: Loyalist and Patriot. This book beautifully compares and contrasts the viewpoints of both sides, the impact the war had on both sides, and some of the important figures, both Loyalist and Patriot. Excellent book to get your children thinking critically about the American Revolution!
Anti-American, politically correct garbage.......2003-03-05
When I read this book I was so disappointed at the author's attempt to paint Patriots as the bad guys! She has written a "politically correct" story of the Revolutionary War. Is there anyone out there who actually believes the British should have won, or retained control of the colonies? When I pointed out to my son's teacher the not-so-subtle message in the book, she removed it from the classroom. My advice: READ THESE BOOKS BEFORE YOU BUY THEM.

Customer Reviews:
Dick Stratton knows his "real" cichlids!.......2004-02-26
The book is gradually moving toward obsolescence, but only because other C/A Cichlid surveys have the advantage of being written at a time when discovery of these fish is at an all-time high. It is one of the best affordable surveys of C/A Cichlids and their care and should be treated as such. Almost every common aquarium denizen from this group is covered by his masterpiece.
He admits that this is but a survey during the species description chapters...it should only be read with that in mind, but, if you are a newbie to Cichlids and you have a commonly-kept C/A Cichlid, this is the book for you.
Only for the novice cichlid keeper.......2003-09-14
This book is very similar to any other Central American Cichlid book. It has mainly very common species and doesn't try to be different from any other books on the same subject. It gives very basic and sometimes questionable information. Overall, I give it a 3 out of 5. Personally, I'd look for a book with many more species including the rarer types and more infomration about tank behavior. You'll be hard pressed to find a book with both.

Book Description
The first edition of Horse Drawn Sleighs proved so helpful to those who wished to build sleighs, or those who were just interested in them and wished to study them in detail, that Susan Green has compiled a Second Edition. The second edition, like the first, is a book of specially selected articles from three of the outstanding carriage journals of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this edition, however, there are many more illustrations, and more working drawings for builders. There is a glossary of terms for sleighs and sleigh parts, and a new section with essays on early sleighs and sleighing. The book covers almost every imaginable type of sleigh: Albany (or swell-body), Portland cutters, speeding cutters, multi-passenger, box-body, traps and sporting sleighs, Canadian, rumble-seat, cabriolets, vis-a-vis, closed-body, and more. Not only are these various sleighs fully illustrated with detailed line drawings, but full descriptions are given covering dimensions, materials used, trim, and painting details. There are also sections that provide valuable information on sleigh construction, ironing, body design, painting, and trimming. Altogether, an invaluable resource. 265 pages. 81/2" x 11". Profusely illustrated. Soft cover.

Horse Drawn Sleighs.......2007-06-09
Excellent Variety of sleighs, with essays of sleighs and sleighing giving valuable background information, plus a glossary of sleigh parts to help understand construction details.
Historical Sleighs.......2005-08-10
This book has a wealth of historical information pertaining to the various types of sleighs and their differences. Within each catagory the models are described separately and in detail. A must have for anyone who wants to learn about these icons of the past.
Excelent book.......2000-12-24
I highly recomend this book to anyone involved in the building and restoration of sleighs. Being compiled of articles from The Hub, The Carriage Monthly and other trade journals from the days of the horse drawn carriage this book has been very useful to our buisness. I highly recomend this book.

Book Description
For many years some of the finest craftsmen throughout North America laboured in factories large and small to produce carriages and sleighs. This book celebrates their skills and artistry.
This full-colour book presents the full range of vehicles they produced: carts, carriages, sleighs, buggies and slovens -- from the very grand opera bus to the functional ox wagon. The text looks at design developments, the variety of usage and technological details.
This book draws on one of the finest collections of horse-drawn vehicles in North America, at New Brunswick's Kings Landing Settlement near Fredericton, with photographs were taken on site with animators in period costume and horses harnessed. It shows how the carriage-making industry in New Brunswick developed over time, relative to the development of roads.
Customer Reviews:
Stunning Photographs.......2007-07-13
(As this review is written, there is only one copy of this title available, and the asking price is astronomical. I suggest you keep checking back - it's a good book but not THAT good. I bought mine for under twenty bucks! Here's my review for a more reasonably priced edition):
It's the excellent color photographs in this little book that make it a worth while purchase. All of the photos were taken at Kings Landing Historical Settlement in New Brunswick where the docents dress in period appropriate clothing, which puts the carriages in their proper perspective. Each picture of the carriages and sleighs are accompanied by the type of buggy, as well the period it is from. Sometimes the info includes the original prices.
The last quarter of this 72 page book is dedicated to the carriage makers themselves, including original 19th and early 20th century pictures.
From what I understand, all of the carriages presented here (except for the carriage maker pics) belong to Kings Landing. If this is the case, they have quite a collection, which makes me want to head up to the historic village and check them all out in person.
This is a very easy and quick read for anyone who has an interest in horse-drawn vehicles. The pictures alone are worth the money.

Book Description
Gifted journalist Gelareh Asayesh writes indelibly of her struggle to balance an Iranian childhood with her adult life in America. This lyrical memoir evinces the author's passion for constructing an American life with the spiritual fervor and deeply aesthetic rituals that were part of her childhood in Iran. Asayesh, who immigrated to North Carolina as a girl, writes too of her struggle to arrive at an acceptable sexuality in the face of parental panic, and tells of her frustration, during later trips to post-Shah Iran, with "the sisters," the Ayatollah's ubiquitous enforcers of female modesty.

To See and See Again: A Life in Iran and America
Persian Girls: A Memoir
Funny in Farsi: A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America
Saffron Sky: A Life Between Iran and America
The books came in great condition. Funny in Farsi is the most hilarious book I've read in a while and really portrays the experience of growing up Iranian in America. I am now reading Saffron Sky and have not read the others yet.
An absolutely beautiful, soul-penetrating work of art.......2006-02-19
This book is presented as a collection of reminiscences from girlhood and womanhood between Iran and America. Gelareh Asayesh shares the inward labors of carrying two great yet incompatible cultures in her soul. Every vignette is a gem to admire at length, to laugh, cry or sigh over before even moving on to the next page.
I picked up this book after enduring a heartwrenching goodbye with a compassionate Iranian woman of this same generation who felt that we could never last as a couple with our different cultural backgrounds. As an American, I truly believe that it's impossible for me to understand Iran. This book won't change that; it won't change you into somebody who knows and will even reiterate the futility of trying. But you will be left with a very emotional and meaningful sense of a world you CANNOT know.
Identity crisis . . ........2005-08-17
This is an absorbing account of the author's divided identity as a Muslim woman who grew up in Iran in the 1960s-1970s and then remained in the U.S. where she was a university student at the time of the revolution. Now married to an American and working as a journalist, she is torn by her desire to return to the beloved Iran of her youth, its 3,000-year-old culture, and the large, loving family who still live there.
The strictures imposed on women in the Islamic Republic (the rigidly puritanical dress codes, the denial of social equality for women) are only a part of the difficulties she faces as she begins a series of return visits to Iran in 1990. The dominance of the West in the material values of educated and upper middle class Iranians has been replaced by the tyranny of the fundamentalist and hard-line religious leaders who dictate social policy. The dominance of the West in controlling Iran's oil-rich economy through the CIA-installed monarchy has been replaced by the social and economic upheaval brought on by years of war with Iraq and isolation in the world community.
With all this in the background, Asayesh articulates the human toll resulting from the revolution by describing its impact on the lives of the members of her family. She reveals this most vividly by contrasting her idyllic childhood against the realities of the present. Everywhere there is division, right down to her own efforts to recover a personal identity. Her sense of self is continually frustrated by the lack of continuity between the memories of her life as a girl and her current life in the West. Asayesh has a journalist's eye for detail that takes the reader beneath the surface of her subject and any easy generalizations about the Islamic Republic. It's an excellent book to read after Nafisi's "Reading Lolita in Tehran."
A real taste of Iran.......2005-07-02
Wonderful read. I couldn't put it down. I am marrying and Iranian born man after 10 years of dating (persians like to take their time, lol). I finally have confirmation into his world and family from long ago. He grew up in Mashed, felt the bombs rock Tehran and took vacations to the Caspian. When I read passages of the book to him, HE HAD TEARS IN HIS EYES AND A SMILE FROM EAR TO EAR!!! SO many of his stories of childhood were brought to light in such a descriptive and truthful manner by the author. Saffron Sky gives a brief yet complete history of Iran, family stories that anyone can relate to regardless of origin and a way to bridge the gap between East and West.
WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't bother--it will only irritate you.......2004-03-17
I was extremely interested in the subject matter since I dated a really nice Iranian man in college and had an interest in Iran, but this author came across so arrogant that I could barely finish the book. When I finally managed to plow through it, I felt like taking out an ad against the book in the Washington Post, where I believe the author is affliated, as I have seen her listed as a book critic of all things--she generally attacks other writers & their books in reviews she writes--a lot of nerve under the circumstances. A boring book that only irrtated me. I never return books to stores, but in the case I really felt like it. I'm not surprised this book in the 100,000 rating. Word gets around!
