Good for visit, but not for travel planning.......2006-02-24
This book seems like it will be very helpful once you reach your destination, but is not a good resource for helping you book your trip. The lodging options were very limited & there were no e-mail addresses or websites, only phone numbers. I don't know about you, but I would prefer to not deluge my phone bill with international calls.
St Lucia Guide.......2005-08-30
This book is one of the best travel handbooks we have read. It gives a broad, concise and user friendly guide to the Island of Saint Lucia. As parents who have a family that has moved there we needed to know about the Island, it's good points, it's attractions, how to get there and a number of other questions.
These have all been answered and we look forward to our Christmas in the West Indies.
Excellent Book!.......2005-07-31
Thank you for sending me the book! It was in great condition and will make planning my wedding and honeymoon in St. Lucia much easier!
General Guide.......2005-05-13
This guide has a nice collection of pictures (as compared to The Rough Guide to St Lucia), but feels much more general and outdated. If you don't need pictures, I would go for The Rough Guide! (I am still waiting to receive one more guide for St Lucia). I am heading to the Coconut Bay Resort for my Honeymoon in June.
One of the best.......2001-11-01
One of the best travel book series, with attention to detail, plus numerous color photographs and fine maps. Lots of instructions regarding practical travel matters. (Travel Books

Informationally sweet.......2006-04-06
Written in a nonlinear, post-modern style, the book, CHOCOLATE; A SWEET HISTORY, is both interesting and fun. The author's choice to impart a wealth of information in the style of a young boy's school report makes the book entertaining. The amount of information contained within the pages is impressive. It includes a chronological history of chocolate, present-day manufacturing of a Hershey's bar, the benefits of eating chocolate and recipes for chocolate treats. Although the book is written in a simplistic style, the information in the book is comprehensive and advanced (including the name of the chemical, phenylethylamine, which causes the happy feeling people experience when eating chocolate). The pictures are interesting, colorful and fun with most being drawn in a cartoon style with balloons to provide the text. Other pictures seem as though they were taken during a family trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania. Children from elementary school through high school will find this book informative and entertaining, however it is truly geared toward elementary students.
Something Truly Bitter-Sweet........2005-03-31
SMART ABOUT CHOCOLATE: A SWEET HISTORY is one of the SMART ABOUT series of children's books. These books are written and designed to inform students about a wide variety of topics that they probably have some interest in, but don't know much about. The books are written in the form of an essay that a "student" writes for a school report. CHOCOLATE: A SWEET HISTORY is filled with all kinds of photographs and illustrations that complement the information it contains. The book gives a history of chocolate and how it was first used, how it has changed moving from one continent to the next, and how it is produced. The book is only 30 pages long but is very informative. For instance, I learned from reading this book that the scientific name fro the cacao tree is theobroma cacao which literally means "food of the goods". I also learned that most of the worlds cacao beans are imported from Africa and that the Aztecs found cacao beans so valuable that they eventually started using them as money. The book is very colorful and has plenty of illustrations to catch even the most disengaged of young readers attention. Towards the end of the book a recipe for making chocolate yum-yums appears. The final page of the book is a sort of bibliography that lists a few other titles that student might be interesting in reading if they like chocolate. Overal, a tasty bit of reading.

Great book...
Even the instructors may learn more from it!
Book Description
From the years of slavery through the years of civil rights, images of black people have taken many forms. Some of these images were positive and some negative and stereotypical. Together they help us see and measure the history of racial attitudes in America, and make up the growing field of what is called Black Collectibles. These collectibles help to chronicle an important aspect of American history. Hundreds of these items are gathered together for Images in Black: 300 Years of Black Collectibles, and are illustrated in full color. The text helps the reader understand the history, and the price guide makes the volume useful for evaluating the market in black collectibles.
Customer Reviews:
Images In Black, Sometimes disturbing look at history!.......2006-11-02
Schiffer publications release entitled, Images In Black: 150 Years of Black Collectibles is very well done, and complete. It features the gamut from salt and pepper shakers, to toys, depicting persons of African Descent. Most disturbing of these is a Halloween costume called, "The N..... Outfit". For those looking to collect Black Memorabilia, this is an excellent title to own! I recommend it! Warning, however, our past was not politically correct, so no feelings were spared when it came to the depiction of black Americans!
Gorgeous, full-color book with a wealth of information, pics.......2001-02-21
I'd say this was a must for those interested in Black collectibles. It has everything I look for in a good collector's book - a wealth of full-color photos on every page, all of decent size and many even larger than one would expect. The variety of items represented covers the range from toys, games, books and banks to advertising, music, Golliwoggs, cards, flat art, household items, clocks, watches and more. There is a basic, if not overly detailed, price guide and a fair amount of historical information. Unless the reader is already an expert in the history and value of Black collectibles, I'd say there will be plenty of new information here. It was a delight just looking through this one- although, as expected, some of the collectibles may be seen as offensive to contemporary eyes (or one would hope), representing a view of Black Americans that was taken for granted when the items were made.

A Book Every Homeowner Should Have.......2003-04-12
If you own property in urban, suburban or rural settings, you should have this book. It's the definitive guide to understanding wildlife, common diseases, and problems they may cause, and how to effectively solve them.
The first few chapters explain how to prevent and identify wildlife problems - and the right questions you should ask before hiring a professional to help you. The book also explains what methods work - and ones that don't - to save you money. The most humane and effective methods are clearly explained.
The next 31 chapters each deal with specific animals: bats, crows, deer, mice, moles, pigeons, snakes, etc.
The definitive guidline to living with wildlife.......2000-07-05
This is an excellent description of methods and techniques to use for the most commonly-considered "nuisance" species of wildlife. John Hadidian, the author, is both a wildlife enthusiast and a gardener, and he has edited a very balanced set of explanations on how to discourage wildlife when it has become a problem for a homeowner. The solutions are humane and can leave the homeowner proud that the situation was resolved peacefully. I ran a wildlife hotline with 50 volunteers frequently dealing with the public on these very issues, and this book was the reference the volunteers found most helpful.
Fantastic.......2000-04-08
One of the most comprehensive wildlife books to date. Really gives a good inside look into urban wildlife problems and how to deal with them in a humane manner that even a novice could follow
Excellent practical solutions to urban wildlife "problems"........1999-02-07
This book offers a wide range of practical solutions for resolving conflicts between humans and urban wildlife in a humane manner. The recommended approaches (such as exclusion techniques) not only prevent innocent animals from being killed by unscrupulous trappers and pest control services, they are permanent solutions which cost next to nothing. Ideal for enlightening residents and city councils on alternatives to destroying animals unnecessarily and wasting tax dollars in the process.

Book Description

Book Description
A three-generation narrative, Jacob’s Voices is the autobiography of an American Jew who discovered in Israel a way to unravel the legacy of Jewish ambivalence transmitted by his immigrant grandfather and American father.
Jerold S. Auerbach explores the uncomfortable space—remote from Jewish memory— between the Eastern European shtetl and American suburbia. Members of his "third generation" of American Jews were taught to invert the classic formula of Jewish emancipation: they learned to become marginal Jews at home and wary Americans on the street. To reconcile the Jewish and American claims on their loyalty, they sublimated their Judaism in American liberalism. Along the way, they became the last generation of Jews to know the consequences of Jewish powerlessness and the first to experience the restoration of Jewish national sovereignty. Their American Jewish identity was indelibly marked by the Holocaust and by Israel.
Auerbach begins with recollections of a New York Jewish boyhood in the 1940s and 1950s. The themes are acculturation and social mobility, accompanied by the sublimation of Jewishness in personal success and liberal politics. But his is a narrative of self-discovery that unfolded both in his American home and in the Jewish homeland. An unexpected visit to Israel prompted a series of encounters with Jewish memory, both personal and historical, resulting in the author’s hairpin turn of Jewish identity. Finding pockets of Jewish memory in Israel, Auerbach heard his grandfather Jacob’s voice for the first time—and thus discovered his own.
Auerbach sets much of Jacob’s Voices in Israel, where he positions his quest for Jewish identity within the larger struggle of the Jewish state to define itself. Ironically, Auerbach left liberalism for Judaism even as Israel redefined Zionism as liberalism. In the end, after seriously considering moving to Israel, he returned to the United States. Auerbach analyzes the reasons—historically rooted in Jewish emancipation—why Israel has become for him merely a state of the Jews, more an appendage of the United States than a Jewish state.
