Since 1940 brain and pituitary extracts have been known to be capable of stimulating the proliferation of cultured fibroblasts. In 1974, one of these substances was partially purified and named FGF; later it was realised there exists a family of fibroblast growth factors, of which the best characterised are the FGF-1 and FGF-2 (aFGF, bFGF). More recent work has shown that FGFs have many actions and that they are active not only on fibroblasts, but also on a wide range of cell types including those of the central nervous system. This volume represents the state-of-the-art of our understanding of aFGF and bFGF in the basal ganglia. Thus, the localisation of those growth factors, the control mechanisms of their expression, and their trophic actions are analysed in relation to nerve cell survival as well as to the neurodegenerative diseases affecting the basal ganglia. Product Description
Preface:
"It is my great privilege to introduce,Minjung's Pocket English-Korean & Korean-English Dictionary in its second edition to students in the United States of America. The English language is one of the most important subjects to Korean students and Minjung's dictionaries are their indispensable life-long companions.
Since Minjung's English-Korean & Korean-English Dictionary was introduced to American students as an American edition in 1990, it has been an extremely popular and handy reference tool for them. It was originally published in Korea in 1970 as Minjung's Little English-Korean Dictionary and Minjung's Little Korean-English Dictionary in two separate volumes."
Customer Reviews:
Slow for use by beginners but good.......2006-10-14
I agree with the 2 reviewers that this dictionary is difficult for English speakers beginning to learn Korean.
For starters, the explanation of the marks used in the book are in Korean. Also, I found myself with a couple different choices with no example sentence fragments of use too often. For example, the noun "paint" has four words listed under (1), and three words listed under (2). ??? I'm always puzzled by which to choose.
However, the Korean-English section is a lot friendlier. In the English-Korean section, one could just pick any of the words or phrases, and then look it up in the Korean-English section. Doing this for just the (1) entries for "paint", I learned that :
1) the first entry was paints, or colors;
2) the second was "paint" spelled with the hangul
3) the third was more of a coating, lacquer
I'm not proficient with the hangul and that took me a some time to find. Many of you are certainly far better and this would not be as much of a chore. But it seems that the either of the first 2 entries would've have sufficed. So maybe that's a rule of thumb to use. It has been my experience that if a loadword exists (especially for common simple things), then it is used frequently, even if the language has its own word for the same thing. These two ideas boost the rating up from 3 to 4.
The physical qualities of the book are very attractive. The color, the box, the size, the print quality, the finess of the paper, the clarity of the letters, the paper book cover, and the real cover which is a deep blue, and soft like suede or something with gold print. I look at this book and want to use it just because of the asthetics.
As a last cool little thing is the the Chinese characters assoctiated with some of the Korean words. But these are traditional Chinese characters which in many of the cases I've seen have been changed (slightly or drastically) in Japanese (and of course Simplified Chinese characters).
Beginners (like me) are just slow, and cannot avoid the growing pains of learning a language. I'm not crazy about it, but it's certainly not the dictionary's fault. It's just fine. I would've liked to see the mark explanations in English as well though. My rating tops out at 4.
Great dictionary, but the electronic version is even better.......2006-01-16
I do not own this paper version of the dictionary, but it is included in my eletronic dictionary that I bought in Korea (not sure if Amazon sells them on here). It is a wonderful dictionary with an abundance of words, example sentences, and variations for the words. And, thank god, no Romanization! As other people have said, it can be a bit frustrating at times choosing the right definition, but this is where the electronic version is super helpful -- on most electronic dictionaries with Minjung (or any dictionary) included, you can highlight a word and jump to the reversed definition. This can be really helpful for words with more than one meaning.
It is true that this is designed for a Korean learning English (concider the publisher's market share), but it is not too much of a problem unless you are looking up a word without an one-to-one equalivant, in which case there is a description of the word in Korean instead of a single word.
Definitely, the best dictionary.......2005-12-30
I bought this dictionary a couple of months ago, and I must say I'm very pleased.
At first I was a little dubious, because, judging by the measures, it seems too small. However it is not, it's a comprehensive dictionary. The font is small, so the size of the book is reduced.
This dictionary does NOT contain romanization, entries are written in korean. Besides it provides the hanja (chinese characters) of a word, so this is excellent. Virtually every word you can think of is listed here.
I also have the Langenscheidt's Pocket Dictionary, but this dictionary is beyond comparition.
This dictionary is exactly what a serious student of korean needs.
not for a beginner in Korean.......2005-04-25
At first glance this appears to be an excellent dictionary for a student of Korean. It was the one recommended for my University course in Korean. I have now been learning Korean for two years, and I still don't find this dictionary very helpful (but my Korean teacher does!).
I think the main problem with the dictionary is that it is too comprehensive! Thus, when you look up a word, you may find five or six different meanings, which are not clearly differentiated in English (they may be in Korean). Similarly, attempting to use this dictionary to translate from English into Korean, one is faced with 6 possible verbs, when one would do, and with no indication of which would be the most usual.
My recommendation would be to find a less comprehensive dictionary until you reach a pretty high level of Korean.
Handy and flexible binding.......2004-11-12
This is a Korean dictionary used in our Korean language class.
It is designed for college students who want to learn Korean and easy to carry around and stirdy flexible binding helps to keep many years. It is economic because it has English-Korean and Korean-English in one. It is also very comprehesive so that one can find all the entries for textbooks and conversations including many technical terms too. I would like to take it with me when I visit Korea. Recommended to all Korean language students.

Cork Silver And Gold: Four Centuries Of Craftsmanship was published to coincide with the exhibition in the Crawford Gallery Cork, but stands alone as well as the first to detail the work of Cork silversmiths and goldsmiths, and will appeal to specialty art collections. Both public and private holdings were culled for this feature: what results is a display which will serve as both a history and a reference to any dedicated jewelry student studying Cork craftsmanship.

Book Description
When The Prince of Wales bought Highgrove House in 1981 the surrounds consisted of a brown path which ran around the house, a lawn and a few thorn bushes. Twenty years later, he has transformed the land adjoining the house into several exquisite gardens which embody his gardening ideals and organic principles. With help from some of Britain's finest designers, including The Marchioness of Salisbury, Rosemary Verey, Miriam Rothschild and Sir Roy Strong, the Prince of Wales has created highly individual gardens which have now, with his own ideas, reached maturity. The Prince of Wales describes the thinking behind each garden, the mistakes and the triumphs, and his plans for the future. Lavishly illustrated with photographs which capture both the scope and detail of each garden, this book will delight and inspire both gardeners and horticulturalists at every level.

Highgrove should be a model for others to follow. Excellent work Prince & team!
Amazon.com
When the marriage of Lady Di and Prince Charles fell apart, rumor had it part of the problem had to do with his gardening obsession. Gossip columns claimed Charles paid more attention to his gardens than his wife. The Garden at Highgrove takes readers on a tour of Charles's favorite creation--a maze-like garden surrounding the estate where he has primarily lived for the past 20 years. Various styles thrive within the boundaries of the property: wildflower meadows, formal hedgerows, outdoor rooms, carefully plotted tapestries of Queen of Night tulips. If Diana complained of neglect, Highgrove's landscape looks like it has been lavishly doted on. In one series of photos, we see the transformation of a large plot, viewed from the house, as it has been completely erased and re-created year to year. Who has time to complete and then entirely redo a garden on a regular basis? A prince, of course. Although the landscape glows with a vibrant, almost artificial green, Charles has long been a committed organic gardener. In the introduction he recalls the period when he came around to the cause of environmentalism. While driving through a declining English countryside in the 1960s and 1970s, "I remember longing to heal the countryside, to bind up its wounds and to reclothe it in its rightful form." The Garden at Highgrove will inspire gardeners, even those who don't live in palaces, who are looking for images of elegance and can't afford a staff to keep the hedges perfect. --Emily White
Customer Reviews:
This will join "Vita's Other World" on my bookshelf.......2005-05-06
This is a fabulous book and a treasure for garden lovers. It's nice for even amateur gardeners to have a selection of books on Sissinghurst, Giverny, and now Highgrove. I especially loved this book because of the unusual features including the stumpery, which is, quite simply, fantastic. The pictures are beautiful, and I even enjoy the winter scenes.(snow+England=Dickens for me!). The beautiful statues and sculptures are unique--and range from classical to modern;they all seem well-placed in this garden. I liked the way the Prince of Wales encouraged young stonemasons to give their castoffs to add to a wall that looks to be straight out of Alice in Wonderland.
It's true that not of all of us can live like a Prince, but it apparent that his Duchy employs a number of people--and it seems he has been more than generous in opening his garden to visitors and fundraisers. If I knew how beautiful and inspiring this book was--or even that there was such a book--I would have bought it earlier (big regret). I anticipate many years of delightful viewing.
An inspiration and a teaching tool.......2003-07-01
If The Prince's 1993 book "Highgrove: An Experiment in Organic Gardening and Farming" was a manifesto disguised as a picture book, this title is, comfortingly, just what it appears to be: a guided tour of The Prince of Wales' very impressive gardens at his country seat, Highgrove.
Of course, there is still a strong bit of advocacy for an organic approach to gardening. But here, it doesn't edge into discussions of European agricultural policy or the historic despoiling of the British countryside. Instead, explanations of the organic method are an underlying, but essential, part of telling the garden's story
The narrative of how the garden has developed over two decades is an interesting one, and any gardener will enjoy and be inspired by the beautiful photography. And although few of us are able to garden on the Prince's scale, there is still an awful lot in here we can learn from, adapt to our own uses, or blatantly poach -- from simple decorating and arranging ideas to complex schemes of crop rotation or building construction. Helpfully, Highgrove's head gardener, David Howard, includes a chapter explaining how the transition from traditional gardening to organic approaches began, and some of the key techniques he employs and lessons he's learned. This is followed by six entire pages of listings of various types of plants cultivated in the different gardens and illustrated in each chapter. This, especially, may prove to be a handy resource for many readers.
If there's one noticeable drawback to this book, it's that there's no overall map or diagram showing where the various gardens are in relation to one another and the house. All I can think is that (assuming there is a reason for not including one) this may be for security purposes -- though that seems unlikely given the number of photographs already included. But after taking an otherwise thorough tour through the kitchen garden, the walled garden, the box garden, the fountain garden, across the terrace, past the sanctuary, under the rose arch, down the thyme walk (my favorite), along the serpentine hedge ... and all the rest, it would have been nice to have a comprehensive view of how it all fits together.
After having read the earlier title about this garden, it was nice to return six or seven years later (in publishing time) and see how it's all progressing. As the quote on the back cover says, "The Prince of Wales has created at Highgrove one of the most admired gardens in the country," and from philosophy to planning to execution, it's a garden that through this book, we can learn things from or, if we prefer, simply sit back and enjoy.
Read and convert.......2003-05-08
To see a garden of this scale and design run completely organically is one the best arguments for the banishment of chemical garden practices around.
This book is a great addition to any garden library, and if you do not already garden organically this may be the book that will convert you. That is assuming you have not read A Silent Spring.
Also makes a handsome gift, dispite all the photos of Prince Charles looking very County.
Beautiful tour of Prince Charles Highgrove home gardens.......2001-11-26
I got this book earlier this year from Amazon U.K., wasn't out here yet, and really liked it. For your money you get a fairly recent photo tour of the grounds at Highrove, Prince Charles country home. There are a lot of pictures of plant life, details of some of the buildings and even some examples of outdoor sculpture. You even learn of a treehouse built for young Princes William & Harry as well as a garden seat given as a wedding present to the Prince and Princess of Wales (nice to know that the Princess hasn't been completely cleared away), two of many details that I haven't seen on television or read in some book or magazine article. I consider the book to be worth owning (just don't expect much gardening information), I just wish there could be a book tour of the interior of the house and other buildings to go with it.
Inspirational!.......2001-05-15
I first read about Highgrove in a magazine article ( I think it was Town & Country) several years ago. I clipped the article and looked at the beautiful pictures again and again. When I saw the book, I knew I had to have it. When it arrived last week, I was not disappointed. The pictures of the gardens are beautiful, but the story of the garden's development is even more interesting. The prose is informative and easy to read. I also have a new respect for Prince Charles as a kindred gardener. While my gardens will never match the grand scale of Highgrove (my husband and I do all of the garden work on our five acres while working full time jobs), I have found lots of inspirational ideas that I plan to incorporate in my flower gardens. This book has already given me many hours of enjoyment and I know that I will turn to it whenever I need a gardening fix!

Book Description
"The pictures...bring inspiration and envy to the heart of almost any gardener, and the text tells an interesting story of the royal gardener's victories and defeats."--The Times. Take a royal tour of Prince Charles' celebrated Highgrove Estate, led by the future monarch himself. In his own words, he chronicles his frustrations, failures, and finally success at turning his Cotswolds home into a matchless example of enlightened gardening in action. Every breathtaking photograph attests to his achievement, including landscapes of blossoms, meadows with wildflowers, fields with grazing animals, and elegantly established structures. The Prince has spent the last decade realizing this challenging and inspiring dream, and he now wants to share it with gardeners, farmers, horticulturists, and anyone concerned with maintaining the countryside and environment at large.

A prince's view / A prince's influence.......2004-01-02
Well said Your Royal Highness. This book is not only about Highgrove, the Prince of Wales' estate. But what it is really about is the transition from conventional into organic gardening and farming.Prince Charles has a lot of influence and connections to sources that can only help this planet to start healing.A lot of industrial methods of farming techniques took so much out of the soil, poisoning it with chemicals, and now it is time for us to gather and start changing our actions, and putting back what we took out of it.We need to think that every gesture has a consequence.A price to pay.
And that is why people of this earth are very lucky to have an ambassador such as the Prince of Wales. His battle to make nations understand these consequences is a hard task.
Of course we do not all have his kind of ressources. We also do not have a team of gardeners to weed and manage our garden. But think about it this way.We also do not have an agenda as charged as Prince Charles'.So every gardener, every farmer can do what this book preaches and prays for.Respect and listen to the land that is yours. As big or as small a parcel it may be.
We can do it.
I learned about the old ways of farming. Why they put the cows on a straw diet before calving. How to increase the chance of twin or triplet lambs. How to prepare the farming season, when to cut hay and why to do it this way......and the list goes on.
This book contains things the old folks teach us.Traditions handed down fron generation to generation.Things that you would not usually find in books.
"Highrove:Portrait of an Estate" is a Jewel. It should belong in every book collection, may it be as a coffee table book, but also as a reference for times to come.
Highgrove ...The Magic of Britain.......2001-06-12
I first knew of Highgrove when I read that Charles had purchased it with an eye to his tremendous interest in organic farming. "Another beautiful country home for the Royals," I mused. But, after reading this book, I began to realize that Highgrove was more than a mere physical place but instead seems to be almost magical in it's beauty. The photos are breathtaking for anyone who loves natural beauty. Prince Charles's effort at organic farming is nothing short of inspirational for all who respect our beautiful planet. And the house itself...... is a dream to behold.......
