Book Description
The Bradt guide to this popular and tranquil alternative to mainstream Mediterranean Europe focuses on Croatia's natural and cultural attractions.
Customer Reviews:
Very uneven.......2007-03-23
This book has recived very positive reviews, and not without reason. Compared to travel guides such as Lonely Planet or Rough Guide, the authors in the Bradt-series have got more freedom to form their own book. The lack of a standard format has both good and bad sides to it. One of the problems is that some authors focus very much just on the topics that interest themselves, and that is what I perceive to be a weakness in the Bradt guide to Croatia.
If you are interested in museums in the main tourist spots, then this is definitely the book for you. It focuses on the main tourist areas and on the cultural sites of these towns/cities.
However, if you are interested in places off the beaten track, you won't find much information in this book. And if you're a bit younger and want some information about nice cafés in the day-time, you won't find anything here. The same goes for night-clubs, while the authors of Bradts Guide to Serbia devotes many pages to the subject, it's a blank spot in this book.
To sum up, if you're a traveller planning to visit one or two of the most touristic sites (Dubrovnik, Hvar, Istria) just to lie in the sun or to visit museums, this book will be perfect for you. If not, you better go for the more diversified Lonely Planet's guide to Croatia.
Charming Croatia, delightfully described.......2007-03-03
Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (2/07)
Getting only a glimpse of the frontispiece on this charming guidebook one should be excused for thinking that its subject is a Caribbean country or one of those magical, far-away islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The sandy beaches are snow-white and the water is vividly blue-green, a color that we are hard pressed to believe could truly exist in nature. Most readers will be really surprised that the cover photo actually comes from the island Cres in Croatia. Yes, Croatia is one of those relatively unknown, but exceptionally beautiful countries. It would be easy to write a clichéd, all-too-rosy book about it; yet Piers Letcher managed to do it justice without exaggerating or being too one-sided. As we learn in the Introduction, he has been visiting it for over 20 years and he evidently loves it greatly. He has also done a lot of research, which is clearly evident from the very useful General Information in Part I. This section covers all of the usual topics, from the background information to tons of practical, how-to information, even including some ideas on "how to give back" (voluntary work, charities...). The practical information section contains one of the best pieces of advice ever on how to handle the topics of the recent war in a possible conversation with the local people. "Even with a population that is now 90% Croat, as a foreigner you won't always know immediately whether you are talking to a Croat or a Serb, and even if you are sure, opinions are sufficiently divergent to be dangerous. The only really safe thing you can say, if you are asked directly, is that you're pleased it's all over, and that peace should bring prosperity." This is a tip to be remembered as it could come in handy in many similar situations just abut anywhere in the world.
The second part is The Guide, divided into seven chapters describing different regions of Croatia: Zagreb, Inland Croatia, Istria, Kvarner Bay and Islands, Northern Dalmatia, Central Dalmatia and Southern Dalmatia. Piers Letcher has a great way of mixing different elements - flora, fauna, history, humor -while describing an area, such as this inspired portrayal of the Plitvice Lakes, which happen to be one of my all-time favorites as well:
"Each of the lakes seems to be a different colour, ranging from turquoise to emerald through every blue and green you could imagine. In places the lakes seem as still and reflective as a cathedral, elsewhere they run away fast, frothing through steep gullies and shooting out from fissures in the rock. The magical noise of falling water drowns out even the shrillest of small children. On the less frequented paths it's easy to imagine the bears and wolves, as you walk across a deeply shaded bed of leaves, crunching underfoot. [...] It's inadvisable, however, to be in the wilds after nightfall - the bears and the wolves avoid the main paths and the crowds, but they do patrol out at night. [...] There have been no incidents in recent years involving tourists, but it was here, on April 16 1988 [...] that a national park warden was killed by a bear. The bear was apparently confused by a storm, and anxious to protect its cub, when it was surprised by the unfortunate warden. Being a Serb, he could probably be counted as the first victim in the Serbo-Croat war, which actually took off here in Plitvice, when the Serbs took over the management offices in March 1991."
Such vivid narratives coupled with plentiful and very detailed maps certainly make for an exceptionally useful guide book. I would highly recommend it to anybody who is lucky enough to head towards Croatia as well as to an armchair traveler ready to discover one of the better kept European secrets. For those of you who would like to understand Croatia even better, Piers Letcher put together an extraordinary list of additional reading material as well as a bunch of useful websites to visit. All of those can be found on over three pages at the very end of "Croatia, 2nd: The Bradt Travel Guide."
Helpful guide.......2006-11-14
Bradt guide is organized in a friendly format by Croatian regions. Regional and site/city specific maps along with pertinent information made exploring less confusing than our experience with other guides. Highly recommended!
Great Book.......2006-11-03
This book helped me to discover wonderful places to visit. Thanks a lot.
The best we bought.......2006-10-14
Have just returned from 2 weeks in Croatia and we cannot recommend the country, or this book, highly enough. We purchased 3 titles in all, and while each had its merits this guide was by far the most insightful into the history, culture, and sights of the country. We drove, mostly, but ditched the car in both Zagreb and Dubrovnik on the advice of this book and thought that was one of the best pieces suggestions.
Book Description
The old city of Dubrovnik offers immense and rich experiences to visitors--arguably the best city walls in Europe, Italian architecture, palaces and churches, as well as the clear waters of the Adriatic Sea. This new edition serves as an excellent guide for independent travelers and also explores beyond the city, suggesting day trips to islands off Dubrovnik's peaceful coastline for those wishing to retreat from the bustle of the city and indulge in scenic walks and natural history.
Features include:
*Revised listings for hotels for all styles and budgets, including accommodation within the city walls
*Updated information on dining out
*Practical advice, including getting there and getting around on public transport

Customer Reviews:
Still so relevant 10 years later .......2006-12-30
Its amazing how even as years go by, good advice stands true. For a book written in 1996, I was impressed with the sound strategies and the clear eyed self analysis exercises that force you to look within. I would be interested to find out how the author sees online dating as its become so pervasive over the past decade. But this book is well worth the money if you're serious about recharting your path in the dating/relationship world.
Good Book.......2003-11-10
As a man who is in his mid-thirties I am ready to be in a commited relationship. I feel like a lot of the books that are out there are for how to pick up women in thirty seconds and they are somewhat funny but don't help and not what I am after. If you want to read that kind of book look elsewhere. This book provided good advice as far as steps to take to head in the right direction. I bought this with the book "Stumbling Naked in the Dark" upon suggestion of a friend that I work with and they worked well together for me.
Be True To Yourself.......2002-10-12
I found this book very interesting, helpful, and an excellent educational tool. I would recommend this book to anyone who is in a dating relationship and also for pregnant teens and others who are entering into the social/dating world following a break-up.
The dialogue is honest, concise, in-depth, and written well. The reader is treated like an intelligent person who can think and make sound judgments when in a dating or other relationship.
I especially liked Part II, The Relatiohsip and the chapters dealing with Attachment, Sex, Love, and Communication. These chapters address and discuss what is needed to talk about before entering into a committed exclusive relationship. I read it last year and reviewed several chapters again in 2002 to keep myself on track.
Regarding any advice on dating and interpersonal relationships,
the information should be assimilated and used prudently. Human behavior is, for the most part, unpredictable and to adhere to a set dating plan or to categorize a person as a North/South/East/Westbound Train is unrealistic. But the book defines the user, non-committed, and unavailable people and lists warining signs of the Westbound (not available for a committment but has a desire to be with you).Dating goals should be based on individual preferences, lifestyle, and needs.
The best.......2002-01-11
The best book about dating relationships I have found... and it's about much more than just getting dates. As a male psychiatrist at a major university student health service where inability to make good choices in finding a healthy relationship is a common presenting complaint I recommend this book when I feel the patient could benefit from some study concerning the matter. Ordinarily I'm not really a fan of what I consider pop psychology but this book is very insightful and gives a good framework for understanding a process that we are taught very little about but somehow we are supposed to know. The reality for most us is learning in a trial and error fashion, often blindly, without much understanding about why things are going so badly and accumulating baggage along the way. There should be a course on this in high school if education is about preparing people for life, and if so, this book would be on my required reading list.
Reading the book a second time!.......2002-01-02
Excellent book that puts finding a mate/relationship into perspective. I have highlighted throughout the book, and reading it a second time to take notes. The author could not have been more descriptive in her analysis of how to determine what direction (north, east, south or west) the person that you have an interest in is headed. I love this book! It says everything that I've been trying to explain to the girls when we get together to "exhale".
Book Description
Upbeat illustrations (each in 3 sizes): youngsters on a bus, playing soccer, flying kites, eating healthy meals and more.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2001-08-10
A tremendous guide to owning a cocker, which has certainly helped me and by extension my spaniel Barry. There are fantastic tips on training and health care as well as tons of superb colour photographs. I enjoyed the book immensely and, though I have a sneaking suspicion that Barry is using the book as porn, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Book Description
Of the 146 breeds recognized by the AKC, the sporting spaniels range from some of the most popular to the most rare. Much has been published about the more popular breeds; however, the lesser known spaniels have been sorely overlooked. The Sporting Spaniel Handbook has been written to introduce the various breeds, offer a comparison, and assist the reader in selecting the best spaniel for their lifestyle. Whereas information on general care, feeding, and breeding can be found in other books, this guide is designed to describe the personality traits, habits, aptitude for training, and grooming and exercise requirements of each breed. In essence, to give the reader a feel for what it's really like to live with these dogs.
Customer Reviews:
Many to know about.......2007-01-05
This book showed me the possibility that my own cocker spaniel has a bit of another type of spaniel in him. This book is extremely precise and detailed for each of the spaniel breeds. I personally found it to be of enourmous help.
The Sporting Spaniel Handbook, just what I needed........2006-11-07
One of the things I love about this dog book is the clear personality and temperament profiles of the different Spaniels. For example, the author tells the reader about the Welsh Springer Spaniel: "Totally loyal to their person, Welshies will follow their owners from room to room, overseeing household chores or listening halfheartedly to telephone conversations." The author continues: "Many are inclined to accompany their owners into the bathroom, often leaning protectively on the shower door or poking their heads past the shower curtain."
The author also describes the different Spaniels' energy levels and she gives amusing anecdotes of their playful antics.
I wish the photographs were bigger, since I enjoy them so much.
For dog lovers there are never enough good photographs and heart-warming anecdotes in these dog books, the more, the merrier!
Great photos!.......2000-03-22
As a child, I had an English Springer Spaniel. Ms. Spiotta DiMare described the breed's lively personality to a "T." I loved the photos in this book, as well as the completeness of the information for each breed. It's a wonderful resource for anyone who loves spaniels!
The Sporting Spaniel Handbook.......2000-02-29
Wow, this book was a Godsend! With my kids clamoring for a puppy and my total lack of knowledge about breeds, this book gave me much useful information leading towards our decision to go with a field spaniel with its laidback, easy-going nature. I found the breed comparison charts really helpful -- they brought up useful considerations I wouldn't have factored in ordinarily. My kids loved the many color pictures.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
A great introduction to the breed.......2003-12-01
WE are starting the search for a new dog and I have narrowed the number of breeds I am looking at to a handful. I bought this book as a way to learn more about cockers. This book containes many features I found very useful - full descriptions of the differences, both physical and tempermental, between American and English cockers, great behavior profile charts, sex and type differences, breed-specific health problems and even a section on how coat color effects personality. While cockers still seem to me to be wonderful dogs, this book helped me determine that they are not the breed for our family at this time. A very useful and well written introduction to the breed.
A great big help! For new owners or veteren owners alike!.......2000-12-18
This book was very helpful as a guide to owning a Cocker. I recommend it highly and hope you learn as much as I did about this breed. Very gorgeous pictures and very informative and descriptive!
Superb quick reference.......1998-10-11
For all its slim 80 pages, this is an excellent reference book. In particular it so graphically illustrates the differences between the American and English Cockers, that anyone in doubt of their own dogs lineage, would not go wrong consulting this book.
Colour photography is used throughout and all salient points are accompanied by appropriate photography or diagrams.
It might be a small book, but it seems to cover a great deal.
Book Description
Perhaps the most popular variety of spaniel among pet owners, the Cocker is adaptable to most human lifestyles and, when carefully acclimated, makes a wonderful companion for children. This new addition to Barron's Pet Handbooks is typical of the series, filled with detailed advice on feeding, grooming, health care, and training, as well as extensive information on traits of the breed. It's filled with color photos and line art.
Customer Reviews:

Terribly out-of-date.......1999-10-26
Don't buy this book! It's terribly out-of-date. The author recommends using DDT to get rid of a dog's fleas. Most of the photographs (all forty or fifty years old) are so dark, the images are nearly indecipherable. There must be something better!
A Thick Handbook.......1998-07-09
Covers all the essentials of owning a cocker, including history, genetics, breeding, the cocker in the field, ring, and as a companion dog, first aid, nutrition, and more.
Book Description
This book describes in detail how to repair and make the most popular clock escapements: crownwheel and verge, anchor(recoil), deadbeat and Brocot, with information on the more specialist types, such as the pinwheel, gravity and grasshopper escapements. Various types of pendulums and suspensions are also discussed. The emphasis throughout is on practical information, with additional advice on tools and jigs.

Strongly favorable review in NAWCC Bulletin, 8/99.......1999-12-09
A favorable review of this book, written by Tom Spittler, appears in the Bulletin of the National Association of Clock and Watch Collectors, August 1999, p. 532. Mr. Spittler writes, "I would highly recommend Mr. Penman's 'Practical Clock Escapements' to anyone interested in making, repairing or learning about clock escapements".

A nice little book........2004-04-06
If you are looking for a quick read on lots of different escapements this is the book for you. It is kind of the Cliff Notes to clock/watch escapements and has 5-10 pages on the main types and a play by play of how they work and how to examine them in watch/clock. Another nice book that goes into more of the construction and workings is George Daniels book called Watchmaking. If you are looking for a quick overview of escapements then F.J Brittons book is worth a read.

Customer Reviews:
Little use for the serious birder.......2007-05-07
I found this book to be of little use to anyone other than those just beginning to be interested in birding. Many of the chapters could be combined into simply a chapter entitled how to attract birds. Many are repeates. This book is also seriously lacking in usable pictures of many of the birds that it discusses.
Bird-by-Bird Gardening.......2006-12-07
I just started reading Sally's book, one of which I should have written myself, but am delighted in the way she has designed this topic. As a person with a forestry background, I have long advocated that the birds represent the plant community, however indirectly. That said, once one gets the needs of a particular species, which has been well brought about by the endangered species advocates, then a landowner can tailor approaches with managing property in order to attract those birds. Other wildlife is benefitted, too, but we do concentrate on birdlife. So, this a two pronged effort: pay attention to the plant associations, and then realize the wildlife management aspects resulting. Each of us can be an earth citizen, making a vital contribution on one's own land. I have a radio show and weekly newspaper column here in NH, "COUNTRY ECOLOGY" where I pursue these ecological profiles and whatever one can do to make things prosper. I formerly built over 11,000 bark-faced natural birdhouses during 14 years in that business, and was on the board of directors for NABS. I take care of two UNH natural areas on Squam Lake, where "On Golden Pond" was filmed years ago.

Book Description
This volume deals with the role of saints and exemplary individuals in Judaism and Christianity. Although sharing the Hebrew Bible and recognizing the same Biblical figures there, both religions have developed widely divergent perspectives upon the significance of these figures, although there are occasional common motifs and themes.
Moreover, even the contrasting themes betray an underlying interaction between both religions as is clear from the contributions on, for example, Melchizedek, Elijah, the Desert Fathers, Rabbis on clothing, the Apostle Peter in Jewish tradition, the Maccabees in Christian tradition and the Biblical examples in Saint Antony the Hermit.
The book examines Jewish and Christian perspectives upon saints and role models from the Biblical period to the present time. It will be of special importance to scholars and general readers interested in an interdisciplinary approach to theology, rabbinics, history, art history and much more.

Book Description
There is growing popular and scholarly interest in autobiography, along with increasing regard for the achievements of African American writers. The first reference of its kind, this volume chronicles the autobiographical tradition in African American literature. Included are alphabetically arranged entries for 66 African American authors who present autobiographical material in their works. The volume profiles major figures, such as Frederick Douglass, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, and Malcolm X, along with many lesser known autobiographers who deserve greater attention. While some are known primarily for their literary accomplishments, others have gained acclaim for their diverse contributions to society. The entries are written by expert contributors and provide authoritative information about their subjects. Each begins with a concise biography, which summarizes the life and achievements of the autobiographer. This is followed by a discussion of major autobiographical works and themes, along with an overview of the autobiographer's critical reception. The entries close with primary and secondary bibliographies, and a selected, general bibliography concludes the volume. Together, the entries provide a detailed portrait of the African American autobiographical tradition from the 18th century to the present.
