1 out of 5 stars Rick Steves, go to Sicily.......2007-06-02

She is way to worried about what might happen in the city of Polarimo. What a city full of wonderful and helpful people. If I had taken her advice to heart I would have stayed in my hotel room with the door locked at night lying on the floor. Go to Sicily Rick Steves and write the perfect travel book. This one is not it!

I recently bought this guide for a 2 week trip to Sicily this May. I bought 3 guides - Lonely Planet, Rough Guides and Blue Guide. This was by far the worst guide I have ever purchased to go anywhere. For example, two of the premier sites to see in Sicily are the cathedral at Monreale - it gets 3 short paragraphs - and the Capella Palatina gets only 2. The getting around advice was generally good, but at 300 pages (including the index at the back), the descrptions of tourist sites and towns left a lot to be desired. I actually wondered if the author had ever been there. The Rough Guide was much better detailed and I like their honest assessment of whether something is worth seeing. The Blue Guide is of course the best touring guide, this one was even pretty good at giving advice on getting around. We did not rent a car and relied on public transportation. I think I could probably have done the entire trip with this one guide. I do not use a guide for hotels or restaurants. I use the internet to find apartments and we just walk around to find restaurants so I can't give any advice for any of the guides for those items.

The past holds many secrets. We don't know whether the Chinese beat Columbus to America or why the pharaohs built the pyramids of Egypt. How much truth is there to the whole King Arthur legend? Did the Greeks really build the legendary Trojan horse? Why did the Hindenburg explode? The thoroughly engrossing, heavily illustrated, 192-page Mysteries of History, written by historian Robert Stewart, Ph.D., with Clint Twist and Edward Horton, examines several historical mysteries that span almost 5,000 years. Declassified top secret documents provide insights about whether the attack on Pearl Harbor was really a surprise. A lock of Napoleon's hair offers clues about whether or not he was murdered. Each section of the book is devoted to a lingering historical question. For example, the 10-page section "Did Rome Really Fall?" is full of wonderful photographs of artwork and of Rome, a map of the Roman Empire, a timeline of both the Roman Empire and the world, and various quotations from historical sources. Stewart writes, "What historians now think is that, rather than asking why the Roman Empire fell, it is more fascinating to speculate on why so much managed to survive." A perfect launching point for further investigative work--and who knows?--maybe more of these mysteries will be solved in the future by readers of this book. (Ages 10 and older)

            Book Description

What was the purpose of Stonehenge? Did Marco Polo ever reach China? What happened to America's "lost colony"? Was King George III really mad? Was the Hindenburg sabotaged? Who killed JFK? This intriguing book presents a collection of mysteries—from ancient times to the present—that have stumped historians and fostered ongoing debate. Colorful illustrations and engaging text encourage readers to become detectives as they examine the latest scholarly evidence, try to separate fact from fiction, and draw their own conclusions. Time lines, maps, Web sites, and suggested reading provide further details and help put these mysteries into broader historical context. The book's wide range of mysteries reinforces topics covered in school, while the innovative format fosters critical thinking and offers kids an enticing introduction to world history.

4 out of 5 stars A must for any history lover.......2004-11-15

Published by National Geographic, this is a history book that takes many taken-for-granted events (such as Columbus and Pearl Harbor) and completely re-tells the event using recently discovered or little known evidence. Set up in the form of question and answer, it takes about twenty points in history and re-examinens them, leaving you astounded and wondering how much about history you really do know.

I enjoyed this book a lot, especially since history interests me, although I wouldn't give it five stars. Some of the events examined, such as Stonehenge and the pyramids, didn't provide that much new information but seemed simply to end up confirming knowledge that many people already know or would with basic research. But other points in history, such as the death of Napolean or the possibility of the Chinese discovering America, was completely new and extremely interesting. Maybe not worth buying new but definitely used.

I admit that the book may seem to some as going over old ground, but this book is compiling the main artifacts from nine separate points on a global scale that occurred up to 75,000 years ago!
The similarities of each of these cultures should spell-bound any thought provoking individual. How, before the creation of the wheel, the water vessels, and written languages, let alone possible verbal skills did they do almost the same form of functions?
Each society worshiped the female deities, a mother goddess rendition and they were thousands of miles away from one another.
Each early civilization used the swirl work of art to depict the unseen energy field, the universal powers that worked for or against their efforts of life.
Each culture adhered to utilizing stone, from pebble sized on up to several tons to depicted spiritualness and forms of entertainment.
This book summarizes the similarities, through scientific impossible tasks with modern day head scratching to the known reasonings of long ago. While the scientist speculate, we should observe the wonderment of how societies in the beginning maintained a delicate balance with nature that steered clear of catastrophic proportions- like the ones our sciences today claim we are experiencing and have contributed to during our civilized societies of today.
The photography is the best that can be viewed on the ancient artifacts that should have long but crumbled from 75,000 years ago. When several books claim that the so called artifact is made of gold, this book had no need to explain it, from the professionally done photography, you will see for yourself that the piece is non other than gold, pure quartz crystal, or even marble versus granite stone. Wait until you see the obsidian mirror that ancient Catal Huyuk women had once used 8,000 years ago (pg 50), it's a polished beauty that will outlast many more civilizations yet to come!

3 out of 5 stars Informative but limited.......2000-07-01

When I got this book I was expecting it to contain so much more than it did. Basically what the reader gets is the same information about the pyramids, Stonehenge, and Easter Island that can be found in just about any other book. There is no new information in it, but it does have some great pictures and photos.

                              Book Description

Benedictine Monks at the University of Paris, A.D. 1229-1500 presents biographical information concerning the 671 Benedictine and Cluniac monks identified as attending the University of Paris in the late Middle Ages. Special attention is given to the 126 monks from this group promoted to the doctorate in theology and canon law. The author has used a wide range of sources, discussed thoroughly in the introduction, in the preparation of this work. Important primary sources include university, faculty, and collegiate records, papal registers, abbatial lists, minutes of general chapters and church councils, necrologies and chartularies. The register is offered as a service to historians of both the medieval university and of monastic life. It contributes to a better knowledge of the role religious orders played at the universities and of the effect university studies had on monastic life.

In the 1960s, Judith Rollins was working for CORE in Louisiana, where she was housed by a remarkable woman--Odette Harper Hines, whose lifelong activism benefited the NAACP, the WPA Writers Project, and the Red Cross along with countless people on whose behalf she worked for racial justice. Recorded by Rollins over eight years, this is a spirited oral history of an extraordinary woman whose public life intersected with such figures as Walter White, Thurgood Marshall, Ralph Ellison, and many others.

                                  Book Description

With intelligence, insight, and humor, Odette Harper Hines describes her life—a life that reversed the pattern of the Great Migration by beginning in prosperity in the urban North and moving into the small-town South. Recorded by Judith Rollins over eight years, this intimate narrative is an unusual collaboration between two African American women who represent two generations of civil rights activists.

Born in New York into a comfortable family, Hines' activism began I the Abyssinian Baptist Church in her teens and continued throughout her life as she witnessed the Great Depression in Harlem, worked on the WPA Writers Project, became publicity director of the NAACP, and volunteered for the Red Cross in Europe during WWII. When she moved to Louisiana in 1946, she continued to challenge racial injustice and risked her life to house civil rights workers in the early 1960s (Rollins, among them). She later started and directed the Headstart Program in her parish.

Throughout this narrative, Hines describes her relationships with such figures as Mary McLeod Bethune, Adam Clayton Powell, Walter White, Thurgood Marshall, Ella Baker, Marcus Garvey, Claude McKay, Ralph Ellison, and many others. Yet Hines' memoir is not only about her public life. She courageously reveals her personal life and private pain. Twenty-eight photographs— mostly from Hines' family album—accentuate this oral history that is, as Rollins states in her Introduction, "a complex and textured portrait of an extraordinary twentieth century American woman."
