5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to animal behavior.......2000-08-14

This is the single best layman's book I have ever found to explain animal behavior. Lavishly illustrated with black and white drawings, thoroughly modern in its approach to animal behavior, and absolutely readable, "Beastly Behaviors" is a book any animal lover will enjoy reading. Chock full of facts, the book is aimed at an audience stretching from junior high to adults; parents interested in the book for their children should be aware that sexual behavior is described very frankly, should that be a concern. Buy this book; you won't regret it!

    Book Description

In the fall of 1994, Death Valley National Park became the fifty-third park to be added to the U.S. park system. Spanning more than three million acres, Death Valley is the largest park in the contiguous United States and features a stunningly diverse array of natural attractions.

The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley National Park is the first complete guidebook available for this spectacular area. It covers the park's geologic history and also reviews the human history of the valley, form the Indians and first western explorers to the prospectors, miners, and present-day visitors.

Shrubs, trees, and wildflowers are described along with where and when they can be found. The habitats and lifestyles of the wildlife, from the rangy coyote to the tiny springsnail, are shared with the reader.

The Explorer's Guide contains short walks, day hikes, backpacking trips, and numerous descriptive road logs that lead explorers into the wilderness backcountry of mines, ghost towns, cactus gardens, incredible scenic vistas, and desert mysteries.

Written by two acknowledged desert naturalists, explorers, and conservationists, The Explorer's Guide is the only book you'll need for an all-encompassing experience in Death Valley National Park.

1 out of 5 stars Not for explorers!.......2006-05-16

We planned a week exploring around Death Valley based on this book. Not visiting the touristy places that you can find on any map, but exploring canyons that don't get nearly as much traffic. Maybe it was partially because the book hasn't been updated in awhile, but the descriptions of the places were wildly different from what we found on the ground.

This guy was a Superintendant there for a few years, and thought he'd write a book -- big deal. Coming out of one canyon where he described springs all over the place but we found only rock, we met some people who had another guide that was much better -- sorry that I can't remember the name. Anyway, my advice is to look around, and buy something else -- and something with maps in it, for one thing.

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction to DVNP.......2006-03-30

This book provides a good general introduction to Death Valley, but lacks detail on hiking routes. If you're going to be hiking Death Valley, Michel Digonnet's "Hiking Death Valley: A Guide to Its Natural Wonders & Mining Past" provides better details. The Bryans' book covers more locations, but provides less detail on each.

4 out of 5 stars Very good Introductory Guidebook .......2006-03-05

For a general introduction to DV and several of its scenic roadways, unpaved roads, and hiking trails, it's not bad at all. Of course, you always need a good topographic map(s) of the park as well, and the latest information from the rangers, as roads wash out, and trails become blocked or impassible. Only a fool would explore DV, even by car or 4WD, with only the tiny maps in a guide such as this.

While motor vehicle travelers can get by with plenty of water, a full-size spare, a recently checked-over vehicle and proper caution for remote areas of the park, inexperienced desert hikers would be well advised to acquire some additional knowledge on trip planning, equipment, first aid, and map reading. An excellent resource for this is The Ultimate Desert Handbook by Mark Johnson.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Go to Death Valley Without It.......2005-04-07

We picked up a copy of "The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley" and found this book to be a fantastic resource for our visit! The book is very comprehensive in nature, with detailed descriptions of drives along ALL the roads in the park. It turned out that during our visit in March 2005, a large number of the roads through the park were closed due to storm damage from this winter's record rains, so the book was truly a godsend in figuring out alternate routes through the park.

Another great feature is that the authors tell you pretty accurately the condition of the roads (most of the roads are unpaved), including such important details as washed out areas, how steep are the grades, and the like. We also really appreciated the details on what mining ruins were to be found at the end of the bumpy drives.

We found the information in this book to be very accurate and honest, helping us to decide what we wanted to see in our way-too-short visit to the park. This book is a great one-volume source for seeing the most when you visit Death Valley. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars "Goodbye, Death Valley".......2004-03-04

That was what people have thought that the name Death Valley had come from. A settler who had enough of what this land had to offer. And upon his exit, he muttered those words. This is all a theory, but this book will take you into the past and give you an all-around trip though a beautiful land that most people portray only as a barren wasteland. With descriptive writing and great photos, this book is A MUST for all of those who want to make the trip!

    Book Description

Who in his right mind wants to talk to a shrink? I don't want to talk about anything. I don't want to feel anything, taste anything ... or anything. The lyrics "just dying to die" run around in my brain day and night...

Fifteen-year-old Sam is in pain. He comes to the therapist's office unwillingly, angry, depressed, and filled with guilt over his own self-destructive behavior. He is being drawn deeper and deeper into a black hole of despair from which he sees no way out.

    The Road Back

This is the Real-life story of Sam's Recovery, told from tapes of his therapy sessions. It tells what drove him to leave home, how he survived on the street, and why he was desperate to escape from the brutality of the gang that had become his "family" and from the torment of his own self-loathing. For every teen who has experienced the pain and loneliness of a no-way-out darkness, and for all those who love them, here is the light that can lead the way back.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Pathetic!.......2007-06-18

As a fifteen-year-old, I found this book patronizing and insulting. Sammy, a fifteen-year-old, is amazingly dense and unable to verbalize simple thoughts and emotions. It was a class assignment to read this book in English class, and our teacher swore it was a 'real' book. It is obviously total ish. What fifteen-year-old uses words like 'gobbly goop poop', especially an ex-gangbanger? Can you imagine Tookie Williams saying that?

This book is also grossly oversimplified. Sam 'claps his hands over his ears and yells, "I won't talk about him! I won't!" When Ms Sparks inquires about his father. If somebody doesn't want to talk to a psychologist, which Sam apparently doesn't, then wouldn't he just tell her exactly what she wants to hear, get the hell out of the office, and go on his merry way?

And the part where the psychologist talks to him about the fact that millions of teens suffer depression, he is shocked and exclaims, "I thought I was the only one who felt like that!" Well, it all reads like one long PSA.

2 out of 5 stars This book is a complete waste of time.......2007-03-06

Not to crush the authors dreams, but this book is a complete frustration! Throughout the book, the writing grabs the readers attention, however, after about 75 pages or so it really starts to drag. This kids story sounds like a real drama, but the writing style makes it feel like the author is trying to explain teenage gang violece to a four year old. I would not recommened this book.

    1 out of 5 stars Shameful.......2007-01-06

Beatrice Sparks is the author/editor of a serious of "anonymous" teen diaries. They are meant as "warnings" to children. In fact, they are not based on real diaries and the only one that actually was, she used about 10% of the journal entries and added a Satanic theme which horrified the family.

Now I am aware that children should be taught such things as drugs are bad, teenage pregnancy is not preferable, don't kill yourself etc. However, I take offense when presented in this manner. Children learn best from the truth not extreme propaganda. I also take offense that many libraries (especially school libraries) list this book as non-fiction, when in fact it is a work of fiction.

    5 out of 5 stars almost lost.......2006-05-22

THis story is great,I loved how real and interesting it was although parts do get boring. The language used in conversation, like "gook" makes me question how much of it was true. It is pretty simple to read, but it is mind blowing to think of what this 15 year old kid went through! I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially teens in any type of counseling.

1 out of 5 stars The original James Frey .......2006-02-02

Brought to you from the author of Go Ask Alice... yeah, right.

This is probably not the first great hoax in publishing history, but I'm sure it's one of the most successful.

In spite of the fact that the actual source of this book has long been revealed and known, the publishing company continues to brazenly assert that this is a genuine document. It's as ridiculous as the continuing insistence that The Amityville Horror is a true story, too.

It should take any literate adult no more than one and one half pages to determine that this is neither the language nor the syntax of an adolescent/young adult.

It is a known fact that this shameless propoganda was the work of Beatrice Sparks, a Mormom activist who created an entire series of these books, in which children are destroyed by the evils of homosexuality, premarital sex, drug abuse, satanism, etc.

Without diminishing what positive impact this book, or any of the others, may have had on impressionable youth, and without condemning its good intentions (is anyone in favor of having AIDS?), these books are complete rubbish.

Like Mr. Frey, the intentions are not the point.

The point is that these books are being published as nonfiction.

    And they are lies.

5 out of 5 stars First class book.......2002-02-23

Great photography, classic decoys from Lake St. Clair to NY. This is where a collector learn what quality decoys are, and sets a standard of what a good collection should look like. The other fish decoy books contain more text info than quality decoys/photos. This book is an artwork in itself. This book was published a few years ago to promote fish decoys and for a while supply exceeded demand. However, as new collectors find this book an artwork in itself, with others buying them up, the book is becoming very difficult to find. Good luck on your search. If you have one, cherish it. If you have more than one, e-mail me.

Beneath The Ice is a catalog that every fish decoy and folk artcollector must have. The text is informative and well written. Thephotographs are excellent. And the work surveyed is terrific. Too bad they printed so few copies. With the recent growth in fish decoy collecting, this is a book that should have a new edition. Until that time, it's worth the wait if you have to special order as an out-of-print book.

5 out of 5 stars The book is in itself art, magnificent........1997-11-12

If you don't know the first thing about native landscaping or habitat gardening, this is a great book to start with. It is so complete, it may be the only book you need. It has gorgeous pictures of attractive native gardens, garden plans, and a lengthy plant reference. Even as a Northern Californian, I found a surprising amount of information that was relevant to me.

I really enjoyed this book. It helped me design and implement a hummingbird garden area. I now have a seating spot in the garden to enjoy the many H that come. I am buying another one of these great books for a friend who admired my garden. Thank you author Sally Wasowski

5 out of 5 stars This book eats post-it notes..........2000-10-17

I have the hardcover version (Native Gardens for Dry Climates) and I highly recommend this book. The Wasowski's do an admirable job of showing off the best of each plant - you get the idea that ALL these plants are worth having, and so we covered the book in post-it notes...

The information is detailed enough in terms of native habitat, water, and sun/shade requirements and growing habits that we could build a great "hit list" of plants that we took to the local native nurseries. We found almost everything on our list, so the plants covered seem easy enough to find, at least in Los Angeles.

The best feature of this book can be found under the "Other Value" subhead for each plant listing: whether the flowers are used by hummingbirds or bees; whether it's a larval plant for butterflies or moths; and whether the seed or fruit is eaten by birds. I wish all books had this essential information for the wildlife gardener.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, well-illustrated guide to desert plants.......2000-07-23

Native Gardening from El Paso to L.A. is actually the Wasowskis' previous book, Native Gardens for Dry Climates published under a new name. The only differences I noted were a change in the format of the introduction and new photographs substituted for a couple of the plants. Nevertheless, as I did not own the previous version, I found this edition very helpful in deciding what type of desert trees, cactus, shrubs and plants to include in a desert landscape. The authors provide full color photographs of the entire plant or tree plus pertinent details such as water needs, amount of sun, type of soil, maximum height and width, native habitat and the desert regions it will grow in. A map included in the book outlines seven distinct regions covering California, Southern Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and a portion of Texas. A general description and landscaping tips for each of the 146 plants are also provided. Tables are included which outline the color and bloom time for each plant. Several sample gardens plans are reviewed providing the reader with landscaping ideas. I found this book to be an extremely helpful resource.

I recently became a volunteer editor for two publications and it was suggested to me to learn the program Pagemaker 7, since that was used on prior publications. Though I did get the program, it was very hard to learn from the self help section. I came across Kevin Siegel's book while searching on Amazon, bought the book and I am amazed in such short time with what I have been able to understand, learn and remember and more importantly, put to use. I just wish there was a similar book by Mr. Siegel on Photoshop. This is the book you should get if you want to learn Pagemaker 7 the "right" way.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for people who have anxiety about learning softward.......2005-08-30

Kevin Seigel has put together the simplest, handiest, user- friendliest book I can imagine on Pagemaker and I recommend it to everybody who has the software as a basic reference. I have always considered myself to be too impatient to learn Pagemaker. I've taken Pagemaker classes and felt like I failed & they failed because they're so boring and it all seems so easy, but when I leave class I forget it all and none of the manuals or handouts are very good and when I try to put a page together I just get upset. But this book is so step by step and basic, if you just do it, take it lesson by lesson, you'll find yourself understanding how the program works and what it can do, at least enough to accomplish whatever project you're working on. I'm happy to say that the knowledge builds on itself and I actually feel that I'm gaining some proficiency in Pagemaker!
Do yourself a big favor and buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars The go-to guide for learning PageMaker 7 from scratch.......2004-08-10

This is quite possibly the best approach to a training guide I've seen for a software program. Very concise and clear with hands-on exercises. The graphics could be crisper, but after a few pages, the black-and-white illustrations were not a distraction at all. I also applaud the fact that the book is spiral bound, which allows you to lay the book down next to the keyboard and follow along. Using this book in conjunction with the Visual Quickstart Guide has made me a competent, skilled PageMaker user in just a few weeks. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn PageMaker from scratch.

4 out of 5 stars A good way to begin learning........2004-05-12

I had never worked with PageMaker before and wanted to get up-and-running fairly quickly. This book helped a lot.

The lessons are clear and organized well. After each major section there is a "lab" where you apply what you've learned. My only complaint with the labs is that there are not always pictures to compare your work with. Other than that I found the book/instructions quite easy to follow and now feel that I could begin working with PageMaker to create documents for our office.

I will be getting another PageMaker reference book for more details instructions but plan on keeping this one as a quick reference.
