Lonely Planet Montreal.......2007-06-03

I spent a month in Montreal to study French and used this book to explore the city. It lead me to some cool places that I would not have found otherwise and gave me good insight into the neighborhoods. By going to the recommended bagel shops, I discovered Mile End, my favorite place in the city. I also found the recommended breweries to be worthwhile. Overall this was worth the money.

Disappointing.......2007-01-17

This book is very poorly organized, the "French dictionary" contained no useful phrases, and the maps were terrible!! I would definitely choose something more comprehensive & buy a separate city map.

i picked this book out of the ones at the bookstore b/c i liked the look of it: good number of pictures, good maps (inc. a map of the metro which most other books didn't seem to have), good info. -however-, a huge drawback to this book is its poor organization. if you're looking at one of the street maps in the book, the landmarks, etc. aren't marked by page number, so you have to look up the landmark in the index (which they have separated into food, accomodations, sites instead of all together, which proved to be very annoying), and then flip back to the page in the book. also, the book is organized again according to categories (food, sites, shopping, etc.) instead of by area, so if you're trying to build a list of things to do in one part of the city you have to keep flipping back and forth from the maps to the indices to the book, which is a huge effort that could've been fixed w/ better planning. this is really too bad, b/c o/w it has a lot of good info. next time i'm def. getting a book by a diff. company.

another good Lonely Planet guidebook.......2002-01-06

I used this guidebook while visiting Montreal in summer 2001 and had no problems at all. As to be expected from Lonely Planet, the color maps at the back are great and the three walking tours really give you a feel for the city. The restaurant list was excellent, especially an extended section on Montreal's famous bagels. There was a large chapter on excursions from Montreal, which included Ottawa, Quebec City and the Laurentian mountains among other places. All the standard Lonely Planet bits on history, culture, arts and religion were very informing; best was the little section on Canadian French where I learned to say "y'est quelle heure" instead of "quelle heure est-il."

The only complaint I could have was the lack of a map of the underground shopping city, which we found confusing to navigate, even with the map provided by the tourist authority. Otherwise it's as good a guidebook to Montreal as you're likely to find anywhere.

This is a fine book for classroom use with intermediate-to-advanced level Russian speakers who are acquiring English. A good selection of idiomatic American expressions is presented and illustrated through an engaging 25-chapter story involving a single family (the Johnsons); the specific situations used-- from the family's daily life, work, school and recreation-- are generally clearly delineated and are often instructive for the students in both linguistic and cultural contexts. The various exercises which accompany the texts are varied and competently assembled, and their completion probably gives the students an important sense an accomplishment (however ephemeral) that rote memorization does not by itself provide.

Some editing still needs to be done: there are too many instances of everyday expressions (which most students already understand) being offered up as "idioms"; conversely, there are also several occasions in which odd/unusual constructions go unglossed. While these are not great impediments, the CD which accompanies the book has several more serious problems: the voice of one principal character (Bob, the father) is poorly enunciated throughout [and also happens to bear an unnerving resemblance to that of Vladimir Pozner...]; and several other characters simply miss the appropriate stresses in a number of words and phrases-- as though they were reading the texts aloud for the first time. The instructor is left to explain that, well, what he/she would *actually* say in this situation sounds more like this: "..." One gets the impression that the roles were voiced by a convenient selection of local volunteers-- whereas hiring real actors for the roles could have made a significant difference.

That said, I recommend this book-- and look forward to a second volume (as well as to the remedial tinkering with the first). My students enjoyed it for the most part, and no doubt learned a great deal from the adventures of the Johnson family.

Why isn't this book more popular?.......2000-06-08

By far the best source for cat care, behavior and training that's out there.

I picked up this book the first (and only) time I saw it. I was amazed! What other 'cat care' books only hint at, this book explains. For a book that's six years old it's just a relevant as any new cat book out there.

The book has too much good information to go into. I've never read another cat care manual that gave so much wonderful, accurate, and RELEVANT information!

I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to any cat owner new or old. As a former adoption counselor and animal behavior specialist at a humane society, and owner of four cats myself, I can guarantee that the information is accurate and WILL improve the relationship with your cat.

a balanced, very thorough book..........1998-11-21

This book is great as the first book a cat owner purchases. Its strongest sections are the ones about training, making and buying toys, and making your own kitty treats. I appreciated that the author voiced his opinion that free-feeding was a bad idea, too. It is a wealth of information, very specific info, indicating that the people writing this book were actually interested in and knowledgeable of felines.

First of all, I HATE the BIG UGLY picture of American Car Racer...do not know his name, on the cover of the book. Second, I hate NASCAR and Cheap political HOT WHEEL junk I do not even care for looking at. The book should focus on HIGH QUALITY COLLECTIBLE BRANDS ONLY. What a waste of paper~!!!

This 496 page guide to the hottest current collectibles contains more than 1,300 black and white large, sharp photos and covers more than 10,000 items in 95 categories with current values !! Topics range from Animation Art, Barbie Dolls, Bobbing Heads, to Fisher-Price, Gambling, G.I. Joe, to Western Americana, Wrestling, and Yo-Yos. Even though the scope is so wide, there is plenty of useful background information provided on the topics. An extensive set of ruminations on his journey from Cameroon to the United States of America. The kid from Cameroon tells all that needs to be said about love, loss and separation, about `why the tortoise's back is cracked, why snakes feel slippery, and why snakes' saliva is poisonous.'

Herman Yenwo explains the meanings of customs around the family, cultural, religious, and about the nature of goodness and simplicity. He uses the meanings of images, his experience of love and bond with his family and friends. In short, a summary of meanings of reciprocity in a relationship, and what it means to sustain bonds of trust and commitment.

He writes exactly as he talks, `extremely funny, must read it.'

Herman writes: "One evening my wife to be, literally dragged me to attend a TOASTMASTERS meeting as a guest. She assured me that I would not be called upon to make an impromptu speech at the podium in front of the distinguished members of this elite club. Under those circumstances, I agreed to go. Little did I know that the idea to write a concise account of my life would be born in a small meeting room full of strangers. One of the distinguished gentlemen - 50'ish in age, introduced himself as a "Retired Navy", and went on to give an account of his travels through the Cape of Good Hope all the way to the horn of Africa, and on to the Mediteranean. I thought his presentation was interesting but limited as far as the depts of African culture. I suddenly realised that I was overflowing with information regarding some African miths.
