Outdated when it comes to attraction closings.......2007-07-24

Many of the main attractions in St. Petersburgh and Moscow are museums and the like.

Museums in both cities tend to be closed at least one day during the week. It is different days for different museums.

There were a significant amount of attractions (probably about 1/3) in both cities where the book had incorrect days. So we'd show up on a day it was supposed to be open, and they were closed. Or the hours were wrong. Or the book would say that they had english tours and they did not.

I was extremely disappointed at such a major oversight.

I think the guide is useful and concise, very much to the point and touches on many interesting and relevant topics. I've lived in Russia most of my life, so far, and I think the guide more than does it justice.

Lightweight guide with plenty of fluff.......2006-06-28

I was very disappointed by this book, which feels largely like a cut-and-paste job. It opens with a bunch of general travel advice and then goes on to describe a few things to do and see in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Many blocks of text are repeated in various parts of the book and I felt the actual amount of information about things to do and see in these two amazing cities was pretty limited, especially given the number of pages I carried around with me. I found all the hotel info I needed on the Internet (see tripadvisor.com) and would have liked this book better if they'd left out all the hotel info and left out the repetition.

I feel like I could write you a better travel guide after spending just one week with natives in each city. Surely somebody else has done a better job!

I love Frommer's!.......2006-03-29

With that said, I have been to Russia only once (about 10 years ago) and it was with a tour. I am planning my second trip this Fall (2006) and was pleased to see that Frommer's finally put out a book for Russia. The matter of fact reviews as well as prices cited for absolutely everything give you a snapshot of what it "might" cost. I say "might" because there are so many variables that a book can't truly predict (i.e. fluid exchange rates, supply/demand, the "current will of a taxi driver", etc.) but this book gives you at least a starting point to evaluate if you are overpaying or getting a deal. I am planning to go this Fall without a guide and my confidence is building, as result of this book. I should say that I can read & write in Russian and speak a little, but it was still an intimidating country for me 10 years ago. I can read a Frommers book anytime even if I do not have trip planned. I've just started reading this one and I already love it. Good job (again) Frommer's!

I would really like to know if Ms. Moore actually believes what she wrote, or simply did it for the money. Either way, the book is shameful and filled with inaccuracies, inuendo, half-truths and fabrications. If You Lived at the Time of the Civil War is a shining example of Political Correctness at its finest. Don't waste your money.

Don't Waste Your Money.......2006-05-02

on this book, unless you wish to follow the mindless politically correct rewritten version of history that you find pretty much everywhere these days. I am a teacher, a historian, and a woman whose ancestors fought proudly for the Union Army. That said, I recognize this book for what it is. If you're really looking for something historically accurate, then you would better spend your money on books which detail - even for this age group - the War Between the States in much more realistic and honest terms. They are out there. Though I'm not quite as passionate as some of the reviewers below, I agree with their sentiment entirely. This book is simply fluff with almost no historical value - actually, it's worse than that, because it does perpetuate false stereotypes. It's especially bad because it's done in the guise of educational fiction. Shame on Scholastic.

Unrealistic book.......2005-06-20

While I will concede that the book is an easy read, it does talk down to the child and the book constantly contradicts itself.
One example from the book:
Women and children in the South were not use to doing things for themselves. Then showing children with barefoot.
If a child is rich enough to not "do" for himself he would not be barefoot as only poor people were barefooted in those days.
Secondly very few people in the South actually owned slaves, something the book doesn't make clear.
The issue for many Southerners wasn't slavery as much as taxes.
Like a pervious reviewer I wish the book covered Sherman's march to Sea which an effort by the Union Army to just target the Southern Civilian population.
I also wish the book was be more accurate and stated that the Northern Army didn't treat former slaves well either.

The sad part that the book didn't bring out was the fact that during reconstruction there was little to no schooling allowed for children whose fathers served in the Rebel Army.

Shameful.......2005-06-13

This book IF YOU does not give the actual facts of why the Civil War was fought, such as the South was tired of paying unfair taxes, coastal water monopolies (by the North) and tariffs.
The IF You book goes with the party line of the South fought to keep slaves. Slavery while an issue of the Civil War wasn't a major issue; in fact some of the largest slave holders in the South were against secession as they felt slavery would be held safer in the Union then outside the Union [Even Lincoln wrote that Slavery would be held safer in the Union then outside the Union where the states who seceded would lose all constitutional guarantees).
Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in hopes of starting slave revolts in the South (interesting note the Emancipation Proclamation was only for those slaves in the Confederate states it did not apply to the four Northern states that had slaves or to Southern states that were under Northern control).
The book makes the Southerners look like murdering thieves while the Union come across as the fighters for justice, it totally overlooks W.T.Sherman's march to the sea which was a war against the unarmed civilian population of the South particularly women and children who were thrown out of their houses in the dead of winter without their clothes on by the Northern troops, in many cases ganged raped and left without food to starve.
The justification of such treatment towards noncombantants was that the South started the war however, it leaves out the fact that women and children in that time era had no rights and were without a voice. Women couldn't vote, weren't allowed to work, could not serve on jury duty etc.
I found this book very uninformative and full of misleading information.

Great kids book with nice illustrations........2004-01-08

All of the "If you Lived at the Time of..." books are great for kids, and also a nice, quick read for adults! What I like about them is their layout, which is easy for readers to follow. Each page begins with a question, "Would you have seen a battle in the South?" for example. Nicely drawn illustrations accompany each answer. The book itself is small and lightweight enough to be handled easily by kids. Issues between the North and South are explained simply and, I believe, fairly.

Unless you need a take-along guide for garage sales and thrift stores, or you know nothing about the LGB's you're starting to collect... you'll get lots more information for the $$ if you buy the 5th edition of "Collecting Little Golden Books: A Collector's Identification and Price Guide."

A Great Little Book.......2005-11-08

Steve Santi's latest book covering Little Golden Books is proof positive that big things come in small packages. Colorful, nostalgic, fun, this is an awesome package. The field guide features more than 700 color pictures and more than 1,100 listings and prices of books. It's beautiful, and a collector's dream. I gave this book to my wife, a Little Golden Books collector. Because the book is organized alphabetically by book title we had no problem finding the books she has, or the books she remembered from her childhood. She loves the book. And I bet you will too. It's just a super little book packed with color photographs and great memories.

A book running to more than 500 pages needs compelling examples, pretty pictures, a logically organized text, and a superior glossary and index to keep my attention. The author aces all standards in taking FUNDAMENTAL QUARKXPRESS 4 font, graphic design and text through launching, layout, printing and publishing. With 75 improved or new features, the program works best on a 256+-color Super VGA graphics adapter, particularly for font- and graphic-intensive long document and higher-resolution printings. Design and layout need graphics, pictures and text moving together, so Bezier draws professional illustration-type vector boxes and lines; original images reproduce best when prepared with about twice the resolution of the final printed document; and text shapes most legibly from plans etched the pre-digital way before opening the program. Bitmap formats have more color control than vector illustrations, but help is there with color correction, color management, and automated and manual trap options to be set before printing. There are better travel guides.......2005-06-29

Following a recent whirlwind move to Germany from the States, we were looking for a good travel guide so that we could explore the country. Although I'm usually a loyal fan of the Lonely Planet and DK books, I decided to give this one a go. It was hefty, and seemed to include several itinerary suggestions for trips of varying lengths and focusing on various parts of Germany.

Now that we've been here a while and had plenty of opportunities to use the book, I'm sorry to say that I've found this book very disappointing. This Fodor's is full of information about many things: restaurants, hotels, sights to see in each town, and the nightlife.

However, I've found it lacking in several arenas. For one thing, the maps are pitiful. We've tried maneuvering around several cities with this book and have found the maps utterly useless every time. Also, one of the crucial bits of practical information it misses is how to get from one city to another or what types of public transportation is available within a particular city.

So, in a way, this book is okay, which is why I didn't rate it just two stars. It does have nearly 800 pages of information and suggests plenty of ideas for how to visit Germany. I just think it could've spent more of those 800 pages on more practical information. If you need information about how to get to where you want to go, then look elsewhere. But if you'd like to have more descriptive info about the cities once you're there, then this is your book. It's your call.

Oh the memories!.......2004-11-29

When I got this book my friends and I had a fun time drawing in it on the bus rides. It was so funny some of the pictures we came up with! It also makes a good book to bring on air plane trips. It was a great icebreaker with the strangers sitting next to me on the plane! It was funny seeing some of the adults draw the funniest pictures ever! Thanx klutz for some more great memories!

This book is hilarious!.......2002-05-18

This is a VERY FUNNY book for teenagers to draw in. Actually I think many adults would love it too. Those Klutz people sure have a sense of humor. I laughed so much at some of the pictures I was crying! My 19 year old daughter is into drawing and she loves it too. Is very creative and gets young people to have fun while drawing. I recommend it highly for any teen. The only thing I didn't like was a picture of a witch, but that's easily dealt with, we just cover it up. I would not recommend this for children younger than 10,maybe not even younger than 12, because they would not fully appreciate the humor of the book, and the feel of the book, in my opinion, would not fit the appropriate spirit of childhood. Children need to be children, and I don't see this as a book for children, more for teens and adults.
