Helpful Trip Guide.......2005-11-30

As is fitting for a guide on Orlando, the bulk of this book is focused on the various theme parks in the area. In addition, all the standard Fodor's material is here covering restaurants and hotels.

The information provided is useful and accurate. The strategies offered for avoiding long lines at the theme parks are helpful. The book also gives descriptions and ratings of every ride and attraction at each park. The descriptions are almost too detailed (if you want any surprises) and their ratings are sometimes a bit generous. Still, the material is quite helpful in deciding which rides to make sure you see and what can be skipped if time is short.

All in all, this is an above average guide. It does suffer in comparison to The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2005 which is the ultimate help in planning a trip to Orlando. Still, the writing is clear and concise and the information is organized logically. If you are planning a trip to the Orlando area, this book deserves to go on your short list of travel guides.

Ji Li Jiang is only a teenage girl, yet she is forced to cope with the terrible happenings that occur during the Cultural Revolution. Ji Li Jiang's family just wanted to be loyal followers of Chairman Mao, but due to Ji Li's grandfather and his status as a former landlord, the Jiangs are exposed to many unfair discourtesies.
Ji Li grows confused and disoriented as the story reveals itself. Ji Li is offered the chance of a lifetime, a chance that any Chinese teenager would dream of. The government has given Ji Li the opportunity to be trained as a gymnast. Ji Li is being pulled in two different directions, one direction by her family who wants her to turn down the offer, and another by herself who really wants to accept. Ji Li must decide whether she will give into her family, or her own self-centeredness.
Ji Li Jiang told the unfortunate story of the Chinese Cultural Revolution with incredible realism. This journal is told from the point of view of a truly unlucky girl who was born into the gruesome time period filled with tragedy.
Don't be discouraged by the title. If you are the kind of reader that lives for the feeling that completely overcomes you when you get lost in a book, then this is the story is for you! Read one chapter. You won't be able to put it down!

We use this book as part of the curriculum for a class that I teach to youth ages 12-17. This book really seems to get them to understand right and wrong forms of government, what a right is- and what it looks like when those rights are taken away, and gives them a sense of appreciation for the freedoms that we have in this country.

Absolutely captivating and brilliant!.......2006-08-18

When I first heard about the book, it was because a friend recomended it. She said it was one of the best books she ever read, and after reading it myself I completely agree. It is about a girl growing up in the Chinese Cultural Revolution and facing the challenge of growing up in a family with a bad reputation according to the government. I liked this book because it really made me think about how kids are living. Also, because I like books about people with a realistic life, not a fairytale. I would reccomend it to any of my friends!

Best of trick training books.......2002-07-11

I'm a veterinarian, very involved in behavior training, because that's what keeps my canine patients alive. I've found that if I can get clients involved in teaching a dog who has found out that learning is fun, that dog stands a much better chance of staying alive of becoming an indispensable member of their family. I've checked out numerous trick training books, and this is hands down the best. It's focused, breaks the tricks down into easy, understandable steps, and is written by someone who knows and loves dogs. Bravo!

Great for any dog.......2000-11-06

This is a very clearly written book that shows step by step how to make your dog impress people with how "smart" it is. The best thing about training your dog to do some of these tricks is that the basics sit, stand and stay also get transmitted. If you have a dog with behavior problems, once you start them out with this book everything else will follow. The book itself shows this with it's cross-reference at the end of each trick letting you know which tricks will be easy to teach in the future based on the foundation of just one trick!

This book would be great for puppies as well.

I taught my field spaniel to shake, speak, rollover, beg, bow, crawl on her belly, climb ladders, open and close doors, etc. Also, using the techneques in the book, I made-up other tricks. Now she can slp-you-five and jump and twist in midair.

Milk Bone lesson is great whether he learns it or not........1999-04-10

My Scottish Terrier, Sgt. Pepper, is currently working on the balance the milk-bone on your nose, and rollover trick.

At this point we're having so much fun gazing into one another's eyes over the milk bone, that we don't much care whether he learns it or not.

This is great fun!

This wonderful book is lavishly illustrated, and takes a step-by-step approach that results in a over-all well-trained dog. Easy to follow and a fun read.

It is a very good guide actually.......2006-07-26

I think this is a great book. I stayed in Chile for about 5 months and I took this guide everywhere and it was always very helpful. The only thing I didn't like was that the restaurants and hotels recommended are always kind of expensive, well at lest for students they are. I lent it to a friend who also stayed there for a long period and when he returned it he said he also liked it. It covers all of Chile's regions (even Easter Island) and it has a lot of information of each. They even include information on when you should visit certain places, like when you can see the penguins in the south or when you should visit the desert in the north.

PS.- There is a review that says something about Argentina, non-existing hotels and restaurants and changes in monetary system... I don't think that comment has anything to do with Fodor's Chile Guide and I can assure you that this guide is really NOT OUTDATED AND CERTAINLY NOT MISLEADING.

We bought this book for a trip we took to Chile and tossed it...by the first week. Their recommendations are substandard and the information contained in the book is very limited. I am wondering if they ever visited Chile before they printed this book. If you are looking for a very comprehensive guide book on Chile check out "Chile Experience Travel Guide" ISBN 956-7264-79-1

Outdated and missleading.......2003-02-20

This book caused us many problems during our visit to Argentina. First of all, it is out of date........by years. Restaurants no longer exist in one case we were told at least 5 years. Hotels completely changed ownership and management, again many years ago. The monetary system completely changed.

The minute this book arrived and I saw how great it was I realized that I would need to give it as a gift to a designer friend. Then I needed to order another copy to keep for myself. If you are a designer, want to draw cars, or are just a fan of Hot Wheels cars, Scott Robertson's book is a wonderful insight into the world of unlimited transportation imagination. Kids of ALL AGES would love this book!

There is one aspect of this book that makes it extra valuable: Scott Robertson. Not only is he a master in perspective drawing. What makes Scott stand out is his ability to explain this in simple exercises and make you want to practise and understand. The simple texts and exercises are given a nice touch with excellent corresponding drawings. Great value for money.

Softback, color, 158 pp, includes introduction, catalogue, bibliography, price guide, and index. This is a wonderfully photographed overview of the Kensington line of Art Deco and Machine Age style aluminum designed by Lurelle Guild.

The collector is provided with basic background historical and biographical information on the Kensington line, Lurelle Guild, and Alcoa. The real strength of this book lies in the lavish photographs of many Kensington pieces.

The book is incomplete in that many items are not pictured. While more complete guides are rumored to be in preparation, this book it is still the first and only guide to Kensington and an indispensible source of information for the art deco, machine age, and aluminum community.

Nurturing the Soul.......2000-06-19

I was shopping for vegetables yesterday morning in a local grocery store. I was en route to my brother's nursery to give a children's workshop on plants with special emphasis on Fathers' Day. A dear friend was in the gift section and was reading this book. She said she just couldn't stop reading it. She showed me a few of the quotes. One that caught my attention was the one by Victor Hugo, "Nothing awakens a remininscence like an odor." I commented that this sure was true. A little while later, she sought me out in the store bearing a little brown bag marked "paid." She had purchased the book for me. I was delighted. Many of the book treasures I have in my life have come to me by way of a friend. I read it all on Fathers' Day morning and decided to give it to my father. Criswell's introduction story about radishes was my motivation to give it to my dad. He is a 75 year old retired farmer and now has a tiny garden on which among other things he sows radishes. I have always loved to garden, too. I especially like the way the author has divided the book in sections for gratitude, planning, diligence, attention, silence, optimism, patience, perserverance, lifetime learning, time, reverence, and enjoying the bounty. There is nothing that can nurture my soul more on bended knees than getting my hands in the dirt. Seeds truly are a miracle. I think so every time I put sunflower seeds in the ground and patiently and lovingly watch them become giant sunflowers. I also really enjoyed quotes which dealt with the "weeds" in our lives and how we perceive them. The book is a quick uplifting treasure for the silence of an early summer morning. I highly recommend it to gardeners and non gardeners.
