3 out of 5 stars If you're buying 1 Baltics travel book, don't buy this one.......2007-07-27

I generally love Lonely Planet books, so was a bit disappointed with this one. It's good as a quick reference guide, but nothing much more. It doesn't have very much background or history about some of the area's most important places. If you're going to buy only one book before traveling to the Baltics, choose the Rough Guide instead - we ended up using it almost exclusively towards then end of our trip. Also, the hotels/accommodations selection in this edition is very poor.

The book I purchased was delivered to my house in great condition. It was if I had just bought the book at a book store.

4 out of 5 stars First Time Traveler to Lithuania September 2005.......2005-09-26

I found the Lonely Planet Estonia Latvia & Lithuania book very helpful on my first trip to Lithuania. Six women traveling, we felt very safe, the maps were well written and made our daily planning easy. Time distances on the bus were accurate. Information on customs made us feel more at ease. We looked for relatives because my grandmother left Lithuania 100 years ago and found them. A bus trip to the city she was from, visiting the Tourist Information Center(as was listed in the book), an English speaking person in the office and we asked for a phone book which listed two phone numbers with my grandmother's last name. Wow, thank you Lonely Planet.

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but needs some work.......2004-09-27

As usual, Lonely Planet guides give the most detailed information on the "nuts and bolts" of travel (bus and train instructions, locations and practicalities.) We found this particularly useful in a region where we did not share a common language with the people.

However, tourism to the Baltic region boomed in 2004 with these countries' entry into the EU, making the book's hotel listings completely inadequate. I don't fault the authors/editors for not anticipating the boom, but rather comment that, for example, with only 3000 hotel rooms in Vilnius a guidebook now needs to list a lot more hotles so visitors can hope to get one of those now-coveted rooms!

The other drawback of this book is common to most other Lonely Planet titles: the information on cities, buildings, monuments, etc., is very dry (lacks color) and is overly terse. For such information, I have come to enjoy Rough Guides which usually include enjoyable walking tours of the major tourist areas.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Concise.......2004-05-04

The authors managed to stuff everything you need to know in a relatively small book. I have been in the Baltics three times and know Latvia quite well, but this book will enrich my next trip (the relatives and locals can only do so much).
    I recommed it.

          Book Description

The untold story of the Hispanic riders and ropers who created the cowboy."The men who rode the mustangs, tended the cattle, and invented all the techniques of cattle raising in America were called vaqueros and they were the world's first cowboys."Did you know that vaqueros invented ...the rodeo?the cowboy hat?chaps? and many lasso tosses?Almost everything we associate with cowboys-how they rode, roped, dressed, and lived--began with vaqueros. These Spanish-speaking cowmen developed their skills on missions and ranches throughout Mexico and the Southwest, even in Hawaii, but they have disappeared from history.Martin Sandler, author of the popular book Cowboys, extends to vaqueros his lively, informed, heavily illustrated treatment. He highlights vaquero clothing and vocabulary and shows in words and pictures vaqueros on horseback, leading roundups, branding, lassoing and tying. The book retells legends of the vaqueros and recounts true stories of vaquero valor, loyalty, heroism and courage. Readers meet Ramon Amuhada, who is in the Cowboy Hall of Fame; great ropers such as Pablo Romero and Jose Berrara; valiant riders, including Antonio Jose Esquival; and other true American heros. Vaqueros will appeal to cowboy fans across the country, and should be shelved in every library and bookstore next to books on African-American and white cowmen.

"The richness of the Tibetan Buddhist artistic tradition is beautifully illustrated by this selection of thirty tangkas (religious scroll paintings) from the American Museum of Natural History. These exquisite works, with their wealth of color and meaning, show the complex iconography of Buddhist art as well as the extraordinary skill of the artists, most of whom remain unknown. Tangkas are difficult to date, because this essentially conservative art tradition has changed so little and so gradually over the centuries. The religion and its artistic expression continue today in the Tibetan refugee communities, particularly in Dharmsala, Northern India, where the fourteenth Dalai Lama lives in exile. 30 full-color reproductions.

"Pomegranate's books of postcards contain thirty top-quality reproductions bound together in a handy, artful collection. Easy to remove and produced on heavy card stock, these stunning postcards are a delight to the sender and receiver. Note: postcards are oversized and may require additional postage. Love, Loyalty, Heroism, and Other Life Lessons from Our Pets
Within the kind heart of the family pet lies an ability to help us stay in touch with our inner selves, our true instincts, and our healing power. A companion animal's love for life and for its human companions can inspire us to live each day to the fullest, treat others with kindness, and nurture those around us.
In What Animals Teach Us, author Mary Hessler-Key uncovers how the animals we share our homes with can teach us valuable lessons about living and loving. Inside are touching stories and beautiful examples of how the day-to-day companionship of an animal can teach you how to enrich your life, enhance your physical and emotional well-being, and soothe your soul in moments of grief. From animals who help us through life's everyday trials and tribulations to those who commit miraculous and heroic acts, you'll read about:
·A dog who helps a couple fill the "empty nest" syndrome when their children leave for college

What Animals Teach Us is a wonderful compilation of true stories about animals and the special bonds they share with their human companions. The stories will warm your heart and help you truly appreciate the special animals in your life.
In addition to the stories, Ms. Hessler-Key does a nice job of showing how the unconditional love, trust, and loyalty of animals can transfer into our dealings with people in every day life. This is what makes this book truly unique and meaningful!

As a life long dog lover, and now as a volunteer for an organization that trains Service Dogs for the physically disabled, I have seen time and again the love, devotion, and complete selflessness that dogs provide. Ms. Hessler-Key has put into words what many dog lovers have never been able to verbalize. The stories she shares in this book are informative, as well as heartwarming. This is a must read for any animal lover.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read That You Will Surely Love!.......2001-12-11

                        Dear Reader,

I was ready to slip under the comforter and devote time to Mary Hessler-Key's book, "What Animals Teach Us" when right away, I could tell I was in for a touching and spiritual read. I love animals and it was inspiring to learn how deeply others are affected by the unconditional love given freely by their pets. My particular pet of choice is cats, but it did not matter what type of pet the book showcased, I was incredibly moved. I was already a fan of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and an active supporter, and after reading some of the stories that had a connection with Best Friends, I became even more enthused about what I was reading.

Tears began to flow as I read about some pet owners who were initially lukewarm to the idea of having pets, but who were turned completely around and became the world's greatest pet lovers due to some pretty fantastic animals. Take Deke, a dog that loved his masters George and Julie so much that when stricken with cancer, he seem to mysteriously "inspire" a magical cat, Spanky, to appear suddenly at the door, quickly taking over the pet duties of the household. I thought as I continued to read, could Spanky be an angel, or perhaps, could Deke's spirit come back to this world in the form of a cat!!!!

Relating to another story, this one about a precious dog named Tara, I am hoping that someday I can visit "Tara's Run" at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a memorial to Tara, the special friend that truly melted the hearts of owners Tom and Jean. Tara changed Tom's life forever for the better, opening Tom's heart to a world of unconditional love that he just might have missed without the influence of Tara. Not to mention the inspiration that Tara provided that has led Tom and Jean to eventually care for six dogs, two cats, two miniature donkeys and a partridge in a pear tree. (Just kidding about the partridge!)

There is the overstuffed cat, Skeezers, that demonstrated such an outpouring of love resulting in a remarkable difference in the life of its owner and all who experienced her. A Mae West of the cat world!

If you love animals or know of someone who does, "What Animals Teach Us" as cheerfully delivered by Mary Hessler Key, would make the perfect Christmas gift. Especially this year when uplifting inspiration and sheer loving joy would be truly appreciated. It is obvious that the author has learned many lessons from her pets. I will take this space to thank Mary Hessler Key for sharing these lessons with us so we all can learn.

Happy Holidays to pet owners everywhere and hugs to all of our pets!

Anyone who has had a pet or appreciates the special bond that can exist between people and their companion animals will find this book a treasure. Touching stories illustrate how much we can learn from animals to enrich our human experience. Research relating to the complexities of animal and human interaction provides a context of understanding throughout. An added bonus is the inclusion of an "Exercise" section at the end of each chapter offering readers the opportunity to apply that particular pet lesson to their personal lives in a meaningful way. Mary Hessler-Key's book is rich with valuable insights for us all.

The stories of lessons that humans learn from their pets brought me back to what really matters in life in a vivid, engaging and moving way. Because each chapter stands on its own, I found reading one per night before bed was a great way to distance myself from the stresses of the day and head to sleep with a sense of peace and perspective about life. I would highly recommend it.

The pictorials from a Jensen catalogue are indespensible for identying Jenson pieces, and the numbering scheme is detailed with the photographs, making the book easy to use and most informative.

                        Book Description

The Danish silversmith Georg Jensen (1866–1935) first established a worldwide reputation as a designer of flatware, hollowware, and jewelry in the arts and crafts idiom of the early twentieth century, then went on to become a foremost international designer of elegant and refined silver creations in the modernist style. This book surveys his work from his beginnings as a self-taught artist through his apprenticeship to a master silversmith and beyond. His work is highly sought after today, and he is considered one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century.

Richly illustrated, the book provides thorough, detailed coverage of the full range of Jensen’s jewelry. The contributors to the volume consider Jensen in the context of American modernist jewelry, the significance of the international exhibitions and World’s Fairs at which he first promoted his work, and the output of his company, where his own designs and those of current silversmiths working in related styles continue to be produced. Collectors, design historians, and admirers of Jensen’s original designs will be delighted with this splendid and wide-ranging display of his work.

My family has collected Georg Jensen flatware and jewelry for many years and we have been to many shows. There are so many pieces in this book that we have never seen the likes of before - the inventory of images in this book is staggeringly complete and we were so impressed with the quality of the book that we not only gave it as a gift, but purchased a second copy for our own library. Compared to other books of this level (e.g. those by Janet Drucker) the price of this book makes it a must have for anyone interested in Art Nouveau silver, the metal arts, or the Jensen collector.

Not for the faint-hearted, The Gardener's Table requires a commitment to vegetables that starts in an ecologically balanced garden and then proceeds to the table as the fruits of one's labor. Committed cooks who want to understand how their kitchen can interact with the seasons will find that this guide's most compelling revelation is the ancient, long-forgotten understanding that flavor starts in the soil. Opening chapters explain in detail composting, seasonal variation, and ecologically responsible fertilizing and planting methods, while recipe sidebars and pantry suggestions remind the reader that, yes, this is a cookbook too--albeit one whose primary focus is to teach the cook how to be a gardener as well. Once upon a time, these two skills were inextricably related, but all an enlightened cook of today need remember is that if one begins with the best ingredients, 90 percent of the flavor has already been achieved. --Sumi Hahn Almquist

5 out of 5 stars A true marriage of the spade and the spoon!.......2005-03-25

`The Gardner's Table' by noted baker, Joe Ortiz and agricultural academic, Richard Merrill attracted me with Ortiz' name, known from his two excellent book collaborations on baking. And, I was immediately impressed by some of the novel graphic culinary material. Closer reading showed me that the horticultural material was of an equally high quality.

While I have read and reviewed hundreds of cookbooks and am much more familiar with the culinary content of this book, I have read a few gardening books in my time and turned a few clods of dirt in summers past, so I am not a complete newby with the gardening advice. I say this because it may have influenced my impression that the gardening advice is a lot stronger than the culinary advice. It may simply be that I am much more familiar with the culinary material, so it impresses me less. That being said, I will summarily say that I think one will have to look far and wide to find a book that does as good a job as combining these two closely related disciplines. I have reviewed only two, `The Arrows Cookbook' by culinary professionals who are horticultural amateurs with a good sized kitchen garden in Maine, and `Oriental Vegetables' by Joy Larkcom who seems to be an especially talented amateur at both cooking and gardening. Both are good books in their own little worlds, but neither can hold a candle to the wide world opened by this excellent volume.

The book is organized with alternating horticultural and culinary chapters where each author discusses his specialities at a pretty high level of expertise. There is no dumbing up of the material here. There are a few weak attempts to show similarities between culinary and horticultural techniques as in the analogous methods for producing a stock and a compost tea. These are cute, but the real common platform for the two disciplines is nutrition. How do you get the greatest yield of nutrients out of either a patch of ground or a batch of cooked veggies?

There are four major chapters, each beginning with a horticultural exposition followed by a culinary exposition. The first chapter may have the most important horticultural section, as it deals with climate and microclimates, choosing the best plants, planning your plantings, starting seedlings, planting in season, and rotating crops around your garden. One of the symptoms that this is not rote gardening advice is the agonizing over interpreting all the various planting zones. There are three with very different criteria and the most common, the USDA scheme based on the number of warm days can be very misleading. The culinary section to the first chapter is a bit weak and until I got to the second chapter, I thought maybe gardener Merrill was doing all the heavy lifting in this book.

The second chapter begins with a horticultural section devoted exclusively to getting to know your soil and improving it. In this chapter, the culinary section really picks up and offers us something really new. The section is primarily about pantry preparations such as gremolata, bouquet garni, harissa, fines herbes, and lots and lots of vinaigrettes. The high point of the culinary section in this chapter is what is called `The Mesclun Wheel' that places greens on a circular scale of most tart to sweetest with dandelion being at the sharpest and butterhead lettuce being the mildest. This would be interesting in itself, but the author doubles the interest by plotting vinaigrette ingredients against types of greens to show how to match up dressings with greens. This is the kind of wisdom that is rarely so effectively summarized and which is commonly acquired only after years of reading and experimenting with salads. This is the kind of schema a cook probably pulls forward in his mind when they plan a salad based on available ingredients.

The third chapter opens with every organic gardener's favorite topic, composting, and its related topics, humus and mulching. Having taken a few turns with a compost pile and having read a few Rodale Press items on the subject, I was still surprised to find something new to me, which was vermicomposting, or creating an environment which encourages worms to actively work on composting your biological waste. The culinary section deals with stocks and soups. The things which distinguish this section from your average introduction to soups are the discussions of combining vegetables to get the healthiest result and tips on preparing to cook in bulk. I find the emphasis on steaming as a method to preserve nutrients in vegetables to be pretty depressing, but the author redeems himself a bit by pointing out that cooking by several different methods is superior to eating raw vegetables, as cooking releases the nutrients in most veggies and makes them more easily available to our digestion.

The opening to the fourth chapter deals with garden pests, both animal and vegetable, and plants and animals that can assist in the battle with pests. For a book that is sharing its 470 pages between horticultural and culinary material, this discussion is remarkably detailed, including sidebars on equipment and techniques for examining garden fauna and a display of the life cycles of some of the most common pesky insects. This book would be superior on its own, but it enhances its value immeasurably by offering a detailed chapter by chapter bibliography which has more details on the many different topics touched upon in this book.

The second half of the book is something of an encyclopedia of the growing and eating attributes of the plants most commonly grown in the United States. Even this section has its pleasures to the casual reader, as it is very nicely organized by type of plant rather than by the alphabet.

To an old `Whole Earth Catalog' hippie like me, this book is pure gold. To anyone interested in both subjects but who is weak in one, I highly recommend this book!

Rich Merrill knows what he is writing about! His details regarding various garden crops are totally on the mark. I am an avid gardener, and I consult this book weekly to assist me in gardening decisions. The food part, with the recipes from Joe Ortiz, is absolutely the best if you're a gardener, with a huge harvest of anything from your garden. I love this book, and and consider it a true text for anyone who really wants to succeed at gardening and at eating!

                              Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

                                Book Description

That decision that I had to make was to either drink and drug, or sign up at the YMCA. After the morning house meeting one day, I went upstairs to my apartment. I changed into my workout clothes and put a lot of money in one of my pockets. I walked out the front door of the Aurora building. I looked straight ahead in the direction of the YMCA, maybe 200 yards on the right. I looked to my right, down Wellington Street in the direction of the Brother's Two barroom. I smoked my cigarette. A life or death decision. I had plenty of money in my pocket. Three or four beers and then an eight ball of crack, or.work out. I decided to sign up at the Y.

After years of struggling with alcoholism and addiction, author Dave O'Donnell decided to take charge of his illness and start the long journey to his recovery. From his days as the kid next door and his time in a seminary, to the seedy world of drug use, O'Donnell recounts his experiences in a matter-of-fact manner, bringing you into a seldom-seen world. From God's House to a Crackhouse is the story of his one-day-at-a-time victory over the curse of addiction.
