Book Description
Each book focuses on 68 terrific ideas for family days, from museums and puppet theaters to skyscrapers and parks. Written by parents who live in the cities they cover, these books are smart about what kids like -- and about what parents need. All the details for planning are included: addresses, phone numbers, admission prices, and age-appropriateness. "Hey, Kids!" info boxes provide fun facts and interesting trivia about the destination, and "Kid-Friendly Eats" features recommend three or four places to grab a bite to eat nearby. Fun to read and easy to use, these handy little guides make it easy to plan an enjoyable, hassle-free day with children in the world's most popular cities. They're perfect idea books for every city parent and grandparent, and indispensable aids for families on vacation.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific concept, but not a stand-alone guide to Boston........2006-05-08
Around Boston with Kids is a great companion book to a more comprehensive guide to Boston. It is nowhere near complete enough to be used as a stand-alone guide. For one, there is no map to the attractions, and as a New England native, I can assure you that Nashua, Fall River, and Worcester attractions are nowhere near Boston proper (in fact, they are a cranky-with-kids car ride away). There is no indication of this in the listings, however, so a reader would either have to be familiar with the geography or spend some time with Internet driving directions to get the lay of the land. It would be preferable to look for activities by region and proximity to public transportation, instead of in the alphabetical order they are presented.
That being said, there are some true hidden gems in this book. I'd recommend it to any New Hampshire, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island family looking for some offbeat family-friendly activities. Think of these as occasional weekend getaways instead of a guide of everything to do in Boston proper in a week-long trip. The authors give great advice, including warnings about programs which might be too long for little ones, insider tips about wait times or how to purchase tickets, and kid-friendly restaurants in the immediate area.
Know what you are getting into, and supplement this book with Internet research and other guidebooks, and you are ready to take on some great spots in New England with kids. I'm excited to go explore some new sites, and I don't even have children!
no map!.......2005-05-17
i am disappointed there is no map in this book, not even any maps showing where the T stops are in relation to the sites or even where family friendly restaurants are in relation to the sites. it even mentions things to do on cape cod and in salem and plimoth with no mention of how far that is from the city of boston. other than that, the book is helpful in determining what to do in boston with kids, but frustrating in that it will take a whole other book to figure out HOW to get there!
Supremely useful.......2004-04-02
Supremely concise and useful guide to ... yes, things to do in the Boston area with kids. The first edition, at least, is missing only one thing: a map to tell you where everything is.
a great planning aid for the whole family.......2002-08-29
This family-oriented tour book is easy to use and a valuable resource, with lots of helpful information packed into each two-page spread, including a description of the attraction, address, phone number, admission prices, hours and recommended ages, interesting facts and nearby restaurants.
The 68 attractions include old favorites (Fanueil Hall, Franklin Park Zoo, Make Way for Ducklings Tour) as well as new (Pirate Adventure, Purgatory Chasm, Plaster Fun Time) in both indoor and outdoor settings. This is a quick read and an invaluable resource for families who live near Boston or plan to visit.
A real help.......2001-08-04
This book was like having a knowlegable and fun loving friend let you in on all the great things to do and see around Boston with kids. We found it very helpful on our recent trip to the area.
Book Description
Want to speak Hittite? Hold out a glass and ask for “wa-tar.” This unique activity book for children ages nine and up shows what life was like among the Nubians, Mesopotamians, Hittites, and their neighbors the Egyptians from around 3100 B.C., when Upper and Lower Egypt became one kingdom, to the death of Queen Cleopatra under the Romans, in 30 B.C. Projects such as building a Nubian irrigation machine, creating a Mesopotamian cylinder seal out of clay, making kilts like those worn by Egyptian boys and men, and writing in Hittite cuneiform help young readers to connect with these ancient cultures and see how profoundly they have influenced our own.
Customer Reviews:
This is a fun book!.......2005-03-23
We use "Our Young Folks' Josephus" as our primary history spine which mentions all these cultures as they relate to Israel. What I like best about this book is that it covers cultures that are often not well represented in other books of this type, particularly the Nubians, Mesopotamians and Hittites. There are many craft activity guides available for Egypt, but nothing that I know of for these other cultures. The crafts are really well thought out and a lot of fun to do. They also have a lot of real learning value and are not just play. Our family highly recommends this book for the study of Ancient cultures.
Fills in gaps in our study of ancient history.......2002-02-16
So much more interesting than a textbook for our homeschool study of ancient history! This book covers not only the familiar Egyptian civilization but also several lesser-known yet equally important ones to whom we owe a great deal. For example, the Babylonians gave us our first written laws; the Sumerians gave us writing and the first real cities; the fierce Hittites discovered how to work iron. Children will remember what they learn in this book because the text is accompanied by recipes, crafts, and other activities. I recommend the Hittite Hummus myself.
great.......2001-04-06
this is a great book for children. there are lots of fun activity's as, well as alot of info. your children and you will find many interesting things to do. if you have children you will want to buy this book.
children will learn while having fun.......2000-08-17
This book introduces four cultures : the Egyptians, the Mesopotamians, the Nubians and the Hittites. The author accurately presents aspects of these civilizations such as history, geography, architecture, clothing, food, religion, writing and labor. Children will enjoy themselves and become part of these ancient worlds by easily following the instructions of the activities. These include constructing a boat, cooking ancient food, creating clothes, and writing on clay. All in all, it is a fun and informative book for children ages 9 to 12.
What a find.......2000-01-16
This is a gem of a book.As an educator and child psychologist(and parent!),I welcome this exceptional addition to the literary field.Though its defined audience is 9-12 I found ANCIENT EGYPTIANS AND THEIR NEIGHBORS;AN ACTIVITY GUIDE full of ideas and interesting facts.I admit I did not attempt the activities, but the text itself is exceptional--thoughtful and beautifully written as well as meticulously researched.Broida concentrates on four ancient neighboring cultures revealing what their lives were like. The activities give the child an opportunity to become part of these cultures, greatly enriching the reading experience.Let's hope this is only the first of a series.Congratulations to a talentd, innovative and intelligent author.

Here's a brilliantly illustrated new atlas of common and frequently performed equine surgical techniques. 135 detailed illustration plates show readers exactly how to perform each procedure. Concise discussions of issues ranging from indications and anesthesia to results and post-operative care complement the artwork.
Customer Reviews:
Great illustrations.......2005-12-28
This book is very easy to read and has great illustrations for the techniques. Very helpful! One of the best buys as far as the price compared to some of the other books. Illustrations are drawings and not pictures which I find more helpful and a little more detailed than a picture.

Book Description
Atlas of Equine Endoscopy is a practical reference guide to minimally invasive equine endoscopy of various organ systems. Because endoscopy is now widely used by equine practitioners, this atlas focuses less on basic principles and more on its use as a diagnostic tool. Coverage includes both normal and abnormal findings, with more than 575 high-definition images, captured by digital camera. Each procedure is discussed consistently, addressing relevant normal anatomy followed by categories of disorders such as neoplasia, inflammation, and abscesses.

Customer Reviews:
The Commercial Greenhouse.......2003-09-18
This is a good book, written as a first or second year college text book. It covers many topics associated with commercial greenhouse operations in a general manner, with a few topics covered in greater depth. It is informative and worth having on your shelf if your considering a commercial greenhouse operation.

not recommended. many pics are fuzzy and the ones that are clear are dated. also, the book is only 90 pages. thin on new ideas, thin on clear pics, thin in width...
Deck ideas for the 1970's.......2001-08-22
I was disappointed with the styles shown in this book. The decks looked like they were built in the 1970's, and I was looking for fresh new ideas. Plus, there were many color photographs, but they were of the same few decks just at different angles. I didn't think the ideas they gave were easy to apply to various situations, just the deck shown in the photograph. Overall, there are much better books out there with more up-to-date ideas.
Exactly what I wanted.......2000-06-20
I wanted a book with lot's of color pictures that showed different deck styles and accents so I could design my own custom deck. If your looking for something for design ideas or to show to your contractor, this is the book for you. I also picked up "A Portfolio of Unique Deck Ideas" to go with it.
If you're after a "how to" book, this isn't it.
"great ideas".......1998-07-17
This book provided some great ideas for decks and landscaping. It will be a great additon to our home library.
