    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2005-07-24

I bought this guide well in advance of a recent family trip to the 'old country' (as my Nana called it) kind of as a joke - but I'm really glad I did. It has everything from packing tips (if you don't have enough room for souvenirs, mail your dirty laundry home - what a hoot!) to budgeting worksheets and maps included. We bought the Explorer pass as recommended and had a blast. We purchased more detailed maps there as well, but as far as planning the trip out, this book is the cats pajamas. I like how it is broken down by region, it makes it super easy to plan a day or two ahead. Before I take another trip like this, I'll check for a 'dummies' book.

4 out of 5 stars Never left the hotel without it!.......2005-01-10

I purchased 3 books prior to my first trip to Scotland in November, 2004. I actually purchased Scotland for Dummies to be funny! My family was hysterical when I showed them my purchase. However, once we got there, the laughter was replaced with "where's the Dummies book?" We truly didn't go anywhere without it. (Although, to avoid being spotted as a "tourist", they made me hide it. :) ) The maps were SO helpful. We did purchase a road map once there, but used it along with this book. The information about tourist attractions was invaluable. Where to find restaurants and which ones to avoid was great. Once in Scotland, I never touched the other two books purchased. If you're only going to buy one book, this is the one. Read the others at the library before you go.

5 out of 5 stars anyone can do this!.......2004-06-29

I traveled to Scotland with a friend(who happens to be an experienced traveler; and i'm not!) in the summer of 1997. Deb planned everything and i coughed up the money and was just along for the ride. Which by the way, was most exceedingly pleasant! I recently purchased this book as I am planning a return trip with my sister in the summer of 2005. Reading this book was like experiencing the '97 trip all over again! Any advice given in this book should be well heeded; it absolutely does not steer you wrong. From "what to pack" to "where to eat" this read has instilled in me the confidence that i can do this trip without being led by the hand of a more seasoned traveler. I will be packing a couple of different maps but this will be the only tour book i pack!

4 out of 5 stars great summary for a first-time visitor with limited time.......2004-06-19

I visited Scotland in November 2003, and I found this book to be extremely useful. The book layout is clear and easy to read. The "top 10 lists" really help in deciding what to see. No extraneous photographs or excessive historical backgrounds. The book has very good general travel tips as well. The author doesn't assume you know everything about traveling to the UK. One suggestion: if touring Glasow or Edinburgh on foot or by car, buy a good city map. The city maps in the guide don't quite cut the mustard.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2004-03-11

While I have not gone to Scotland yet to put all the wonderful information into practice, this is a wonderful book! I found it very easy to read, it gave all kinds of websites to visit, and the overviews were very interesting. I felt like I could plan my whole trip just from this book.
    I highly recommend it.

        5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Primer.......2007-08-28

"The African American Odyssey" just got better with the release of the 3rd edition. Updated accounts, in-depth coverage, a broadened focus (the American West, and beyond America), and the wonderfully helpful enclosed CD which allows for additional research, all make this a comprehensive volume for any and all students of African American history.

The blending of the famous and the unknown, men and women, North and South, slave and free, provides for a tapestry that weaves together both the terror and the triumph of the African American experience which enabled them to move beyond the suffering to a place of healing hope. The faith-basis for so much of the African American triumph could have been covered more comprehensively, though it is more than hinted at in the original sources covered.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction.

This 3 rd edition of The African-American Odyssey includes not only a CD-ROM-bound into every book (which incorporates over 150 documents in African American history), but also has a broadened international perspective, expanded coverage of interaction among African Americans and other ethnic groups, and new material on African Americans in the western portion of the United States. Free access to Research Navigator is included. This allows readers to access this powerful research tool with one site. Written by leading scholars, The African-American Odyssey is a clear and comprehensive narrative of African-American history, from its African roots through the Civil War. Succeeding volumes carry on this theme through the modern era. This book places African-American history in the context and at the center of American History. Balancing accounts of the actions of African-American leaders with investigations of the lives of the ordinary men and women in black communities, exciting and readable coverage includes: African-American history from its African origins to the sixteenth century and the beginning of the forced migration of millions of Africans to the Americas. Succeeding chapters present the struggle of black people to maintain their humanity during the slave trade and as slaves in North America during the long colonial period. It continues through the Civil War and the beginning of Reconstruction. This is a compelling story of survival, struggle, and triumph over adversity. Readers will learn an appreciation of the central place of black people and black culture in this country, and a better understanding of both African-American and American history.

I secured a copy of this book from the local libary and was so impressed with the easy applicable and common sense training. Ms Britt also included her own "pearles of knowledge". I am now on a search for my own personal copy for my reference libary. I would gladly give this book as a valuable gift to any new rider and or owner of a horse.

3 out of 5 stars Scott is not so unique as the synopsis says.......1997-12-30

The synopsis says that Scott is the only anually published worldwide stamp catalog. There are at least 3 more Michel in German, Yvert and tellier in French, and Stanley Gibbons in English. I would rate Stanley gibbons and Michel much higher. they give more details, and more information. For American Stamps Scott is the best though. if you collect British Colonies, you will need Stanley Gibbons. To compare the four, you have to look at a country like Afghanistan, and there you will see that the amount of information from Gibbons and Michel is much greater. They will be harder to buy though.

                        Book Description

You can take pebbles and other natural found objects and turn them into beautiful useful and decorative objects for the home and garden. Using easy methods and everyday materials, author Deborah Schneebeli-Morrell demonstrates in full color, step-by-step photographs how to create such beautiful items as a simple teapot stand to a rustic mosaic hearth. Other projects include:

Each chapter covers a different way of using mosaics in the home and garden. Projects range from decorative window planters studded with tiny violet cowry shells and amber sea stones, to a herringbone mosaic path laid with brick-red, turquoise and gray pebbles. A garden birdbath inlaid with country stones and the blue-and-white vintage jugs allow lots of room for personalizing designs. A complete material list accompanies each project, along with detailed step-by-step instructions and photographs.

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Source of Ideas for Pebble Mosaics.......2007-01-11

This is a good source of pebble mosaic ideas. There is the occassional use of non-conventional substrates (old galvanized greenhouse trays) and "pebbles" (slices of slate), which I like because it adds a lot of interest and makes me think outside the box. Although I haven't made any of the projects, the authors seems to do a very good job of listing all the items needed, and they give clear, detailed directions.

There are a few projects that mix pebbles with china and tiles, and those were my favorite (aside from the candle holder shown on the cover). I felt that there should be MORE of something, but I think that is because I love color, and these projects, for the most part, use a very natural selectional of pebbles. The book gives you exactly what it says it will.

                            Book Description

Los Angeles of the 1940s is the setting for this vivid coming of age memoir. Cardona-Hine arrives with his family from Costa Rica just prior to World War II, more as a fascinated explorer of new landscapes and a language he will soon master than as an immigrant. Thirteen Tangos for Stravinsky is a vivid and intoxicating account of a childhood between cultures, a formative glimpse of an important Hispanic composer, painter, and writer, and best of all, it is an invitation to dance.

                            Customer Reviews:

                            5 out of 5 stars Poetic Memoir.......2001-03-28

Catholic Library World reviews in March 2001:

This moving collection of memoirs, told in thirteen stories, each a dance in time and space, recounts the author's turbulent journey from Costa Rica to Los Angeles and the painful challenges facing an immigrant youngster in the 30s and 40s, a period that still retained some innocence. Cardona-Hine's coming-of-age story reveals a boy's first experiences with English, his infatuations with American girls, and the pain of high school bullying and otherness. After Pearl Harbor, the family flees to Mexico, seeking a home, wanting to belong somewhere. Feeling more alone there than in California, they return to the United States where they rent an apartment in their home to a series of pathetic individuals: Jews escaping from Europe, a young couple in love who fall out of love, a Frenchman who dies upon learning of the taking of Paris. Surrounded by people experiencing human tragedies, but living in the warmth and fruitfulness of California, they manage to survive.

Beautifully written poetry in prose form, Cardona-Hine's delightful reminiscences make the reader pause to admire unexpected combinations of words and images. This is a book to read slowly and to savor. Belonging to the genre of memoir and bildungsroman, this series of stream-of-consciousness meanderings through a time gone by, creates a mood that only approximates reality.
