Seriously Silly Series!.......2007-03-07

We have several of the "You Wouldn't Want to..." series which we used to support our Medieval History as well as some science studies for school. The books are visually appealing for students of all ages with humorous and yes, gross artwork in abundance to illustrate the facts and fallacies presented. There's actually quite a bit of information provided within each title. My 13 year old son still enjoys reading these.

The only reason I didn't give this [..]is because there are only 29 pages per book and I find the cost somewhat prohibitive.

The best book ever.......2004-02-11

This is the grossest book I have ever read and you get all the gross facts with it and this is a good book because you get gross facts. It tells you about the battlefield and how they almost never wash there blades, they were to be decorative not to cut off limbs. This kind of book is great for book shares. Try reading other books in this series and once you start, you can't stop.

Really yucky and cool.......2004-01-20

This picturebook is aimed at primary elementary students, and shows the gory life of a 16th century medical staff. It has many yucky details, which the kids love, and is interesting for comparisons of how much the medicine advanced since that age. The facial expressions are real fun, especially all the teeth-clenching of patients faced with primitive medical tools (which seem to inflict more pain than cure).

Our Heritage in Things Discovered........2006-08-25

This book is a treasure trove of other times and other customs in our country's early history. With the era of historical archeology, the diverstiy of Colonial America was discovered along the Eastern Seaboard. Some of the items the Colonials in America depended upon were carried with them as they settled in other parts of this country. They can be found in museums from New York to San Francisco. The first attempt to make porcelian was launched in the fall of 1769. The blue willow design was shipped to China for use on export porcelain, and the first products to arrived back in England with this perrenial willow pattern was in 1792. I grew up thinking that China was better than what the average American used on their dinner tables.

European coins, intended as mathematical aids were traded to the Indians who strung them onto necklaces. There was a large one0cent piece slightly smaller than the English halfpenny used until thr first American copper cents appeared in 1787 and had been designed by Benjamin Franklin. The first products of the official U. S. mint did not appear until 1792, In 1859, the Indian-head cent was used until 1909 when the Lincoln penny took its place. It now costs 3 to 5 cents to manufacture a penny. Foreign silver was popular in the 1700s from France and Spain.

Indian artifacts were discovered at Townsend in the Smoky Mountains and a museum recently opened to show off what was dug up. It is fascintating.

Great reference for Early American artifacts.......2006-06-20

Ivor Noel Hume is in a unique spot, able to identify, classify and describe colonial artifacts, like no other. This book is a great reference for identification of historic archaeologists and artifact collectors. From the mundane to the pompous, it is all there. Highly recommend!

I loved this book. This was my first time reviewing this book and living in an 1830s era home, I find many artifacts out in the yard. This really helps me date them.

A must have for any archaeologist!.......2005-09-23

This book is a seminal work and a necessity for any archaeologist interested in or focusing on the historic period. While this book is mainly concerned with British colonial items, such items are found in almost any historic period site no matter the origin of the site's inhabitants. The ceramic section is the most valuable part of the book, but there is also a lot of information about other categories of artifacts. Collectors will also find this book useful in identifying items of British origin.

The only drawback to this book is its paucity of illustrations and photos, especially color plates. There are photos/illustrations (black and white only) for selected items (especially ceramics), but much of the text would have been more informative if examples were included.

I am a person who could not draw a straight line. My efforts at art were pathetic. I thought I was hopeless. But Sandi's method has helped me immensely. Anyone who follows the instructions, and does each step, should not fail. It depends on how much time you give it (practice, practice, practice) and how closely you follow the instructions. Even my 12 year old daughter gets amazing results when following Sandi's teaching. You will be amazed how using some simple techniques will turn you into an artist.

Her book and method is amazing. She teaches us we all can draw if we really want to, it is only our own inhibitions preventing us from doing what we love. Her methos allows us all to draw fairly realistic even if you are more of an impressionist. Good for young and old. Gives many hours of enjoyment.

First class workbook - buy it!.......2006-10-01

If you are looking for a workbook this is one of two that I would highly recommend. I gave this excellent book four stars instead of five because I doubt that a real beginner would miraculously develop professional skills from it alone, despite the claims. BUY IT ANYWAYS. The instructions are basic, but sufficient. I am partway through the exercises, and this book has helped my skills a great deal even in ten or so quick exercises (and I have many more to do!). This workbook will show you how to really draw what you see - truely - and that's about it. You draw right in the book, though I cut the pages out to make the process easier. There are plenty of exercises, so you can develop with practice, instead of "wham! Bam!, Now you are an Artist!". I love the new techniques that I am learning. Definately buy this book for what it is - a workbook that will painlessly teach you some solid drawing skills.

I CAN DRAW!!!.......2006-09-22

Don't hesitate on buying Sandra Angelo's books, videos, or tools. Her approach to teaching drawing has opened a whole new world for me. I've nearly completed the "So You Thought You Couldn't Draw" book of drawings using Sandra's step-by-step technique and I'm completely astounded at my progress. As a beginner that could only draw stick figures and two-dimensional cats and dogs, I can now draw flowers, landscapes, and a variety of animals that one can actually recognize. Also, Sandra's videos are a must while working through the book. Using the book and videos together, Sandra clearly describes her techniques, gradually moving the student through a series of exercises that quickly shows results. The tools Sandra recommends and sells are proven and the best quality for a reasonable price. It took the pressure off of me to decide what tools would produce the best drawing. I intend to move onto to Sandra's Exploring Colored Pencils book and videos and then onto mastering the art of faces and the human figure. I'm also very excited about applying my newfound talent to art quilts too.

This is a small, personal and powerful book. In it the author takes you through his journey to permaculture and how he used it on the land he revitalized at Sol y Sombra in New Mexico. It is a good starting point for permaculture users who live in much drier climates than the typical semi-tropical ones depicted in most permaculture books. It is 151 pages in length. It is in no way a textbook, so the lessons have to be gleaned from the prose. But it is beautiful if nurturing land speaks to you. The Table of Contents:

One of my memories of Hank Aguirre is his pitching in relief of the first major league game I saw in Detroit in 1958. After completing a game in Yankee Stadium in which Al Kaline broke his collar bone to make a diving catch to win the game the headline read "Tigers Find A Starter But Lose A Star", the Tigers found they had a legitimate starting pitcher for their staff. Hank's inability as a hitter are legendary, but the author spends a great deal of time on Hank's humanitarian efforts on behalf of Hispanic minorities in the Detroit area. His business efforts were ultimately successful, but the time spent away from his family took its toll. People are remembered for what they give, and Hank gave of himself to others. This is a very easy to read book, and one that would be beneficial to high school libraries even though the name of Hank Aguirre is an unknown to them.

an inspiring account of The Tall Mexican, Hank Aguirre, who was a true professional baseball star; but who dedicated his post-celebrity life to helping his fellow Hispanics in Detroit by starting a business and providing jobs for the unemployable. He started his business in 1979 with eight employees and one run-down former bump-shop in the Mexicantown barrio. Today, there are eight locations emoloying over 1500 workers - 87% of whom are Hispanic. Sales this year are projected at $156 million. Hank succumbed to prostate cancer in 1994, but his legacy prevails.
