Biased against Norrland.......2007-08-19
Lonely planet Sweden is not a bad introduction to Sweden, but it is not as reader friendly as it could have been, and it is a little short on content. However, I cannot recommend "The Rough Guide to Sweden" in its place, due to some grave omissions and incorrect and highly subjective information in this book.
There are some minor errors in Lonely Planet Sweden that irritated me. For example, the word "älg" is translated as "Elk" through out the book (dozens of places). This is wrong, "älg" is "Moose" not "Elk". Sweden has moose but no elk (Kanada hjort). Another example is that the river "boat race" in Uppsala on the Walpurgis festival is actually a "float race", real boats are not used. Instead anything home made that floats, including Styrofoam skis, large airbags, and decorated floats are used. It is more of a comic arts and craft event rather than a "boat race".
However, what annoyed me the most was that out of the books 313 pages only 36 pages were devoted to the Northern part of Sweden called "Norrland". This part is 2/3 of Sweden and has probably the most interesting attractions in all of Sweden. That includes wild life (thousands of Brown Bear, 300,000 Moose, reindeer, wolf packs, Lynx, etc.), the famous Ice Hotel (hotel made entirely of Ice), nature, mountains, moose hunting trips, fishing, ski slopes, national parks, Sámi culture, and much more. Central Europeans flock to Norrland to see these things that does not exist in other parts of Europe. This is described very briefly, if at all, in this book. However, the Ice Hotel lobby is depicted on the front cover, which is a consolation.
I am from Norrland, so I may be biased too, but I still think that mentioning nothing about many of the popular tourist attractions in Norrland, while mentioning almost every Pizza joint in the country is imbalanced.
Good, not great - Would recommend Rough Guides Sweden over this one.......2006-09-04
Lonely Planet always does a solid job and this is no different, but having also bought the Rough Guides Sweden guidebook, I would have to strongly recommend the later: ISBN: 1843536854.
Lonely Planet looses in the amount of content (380 pages vs. 500+ in roughly the same size/weight as Rough Guides). The layout is less reader friendly and harder to search through. But in the end what really matters is that on every city Rough Guides has more information, better details and better maps. Plus Rough Guides was for 2006 published more recently and had presumably more update to date information. There is nothing wrong with this version of Lonely Planet, but given that's is the same price why not get the Rough Guides.
If you are going to Sweden I would also point out Rick Steve's Scandinavia book if only for the highlights on the extremely reasonably priced cruise between Stockholm and Helsinki. It's an excellent way to spend 2 nights!

Good, but could be better........2001-06-09
Graeme Cornwallis almost immediately makes a misstep with his best and worst lists. The Top 10 is fine, but the Bottom 10? You can tell he was put up to this by the publisher. Arvika is shabby? I didn't find it that way at all! A lovely town with beautiful locations and a great arts and crafts store. Forests extremely tedious? Sorry. Ticket machines? I guess if you like ganging up on an overworked clerk, it's more fun not to have a ticket, but otherwise, it's very civilized. If these are the worst that he can find about Sweden, it must be a wonderful place! And that's how I found it. To be fair, Cornwallis is trying to fit a lot of information in a small book. He did miss an item or two (how could he not discuss allmansrãtt, which basically says you can hike or camp anywhere that you're not being obnoxious?) but he certainly covers a lot of what is available. It would take more than one vacation to cover all the attractions he outlines just for Gothenburg. And his directions to eating places in Gothenburg are right on the mark.
Lonely Planet: Sweden.......2000-08-02
This comprehensive guide assures the best plans for your visit to Sweden. It is jampacked with essential information to get you there and away to wonderful destinations and events for every interest and attraction.
Like an encyclopedia, it leaves nothing to chance for planning each leg of your trip. It has two outstanding sections that sets this travel guide apart from others.
First, is it's Facts For The Visitor. It highlights the Best And Worst of what to hit or miss on your visit, which includes incidentals like free car-ferries, but expensive beer, bread, and parking fees. This section also includes the essentials for planning prior to your visit. It is a must for acquainting yourself with the cultural differences and practicals of visiting abroad.
Second best, but not least, section is the Getting There And Away. This is the best guide I have seen that gives all the transportation alternatives available to get you where you want to be, with schedules and pricing. Though this section does not boast of winning any photo contest, it has more cities per area to give the best overall opportunity to visit the real country, not just the tourist traps. Also included are internet connections to give even greater details, which brings the reference material to life.
Overall, I believe this guide is the bible for experiencing Sweden in the first year of the new millennium.

Customer Reviews:
handy guide.......2007-08-24
I found this guidebook indispensable on my recent visit to Stockholm - the brief restaurant write-ups were spot on, and it contained a much greater level of detail than other guidebooks I looked at.
I found the maps very useful as well; they are aided by the layout of the book - all lodging in one chapter, all dining in another chapter, nightlife in its own chapter, etc, rather than dividing the chapters by region. Once I got used to the layout, it was very intuitive.
That said, it's always a good idea to look at a guidebook first in a bricks-and-mortar store before buying it online, because personal tastes do vary.
About average.......2007-03-10
I am ususally a DK Eyewitness fan, but the Lonely Planet Stockholm was more recent in it's copywright. Most information was helpful except when heading to Gripsholms Slott, which wasn't open to any public until May, we visited in February.
Also some of the stores noted for shopping in Galma Stad didn't exist.
Reliable guide for an amazing Scandinavian city.......2006-08-15
Becky Ohlsen provides an excellent, personalized overview of Stockholm's many museums, cafes, hotels, etc. We relied on her book for our too-brief three-day stay in the city, and were consistently happy with the advice given. Recommended.
Decent Guide to Stockholm.......2006-02-20
Good coverage of history and has more detail than most city guides by other publishers. The maps are good but a removable fold-out would have been better. Overall an interesting read and useful resource.

Nine features of a quality dog pack Four easy steps to introduce your dog to a pack Discover the fun of geocaching Any dog can do it!
Customer Reviews:
Backpacking With Your Dog.......2007-07-27
I didn't find this book as helpful as I hoped to. I found the information very general. I did value the suggestions regarding putting together a first aid kit for dogs as well as the information on dog foot pad care.
Recommended for pet loving hikers.......2004-10-10
Now in a new and significantly revised edition, A Guide To Backpacking With Your Dog by dog-owner and backpacking expert Charlene LaBell is a no-nonsense guide to the ins and outs of enjoying vigorous outdoors hiking with one's canine pets. Individual chapters address necessary training and conditioning, mountain biking, geocaching, selecting a pack that properly fits one's dog, bringing along the right amount of food for oneself and one's dog, legal and permit issues, and much more. Black-and-white photographs and easy-to-follow rule lists nicely flesh out A Guide To Backpacking With Your Dog, which is practical, "user friendly", and enthusiastically recommended for pet loving hikers with their canine companions.
Highly recommended!.......2004-05-18
Charlene LaBelle admirably covers such practical matters as selecting and fitting dogpacks and planning hikes, and has a special gift for instilling confidence and generating enthusiasm.
Best Beginner Book on Backpacking with Dogs!.......2004-05-13
If you want a great book on getting started with backpacking with dogs, look no further. Charlene has written the definitive guide to packing with dogs. Don't listen to the naysayers! This is it when it comes to choosing a pack, planning a hike, and camping with dogs. I highly recommend this book -- it's the first and the best out there.
Not enough butter for the bread.......2003-03-14
This book has the basics just fine. But nothing on the more experienced side. If your trails require fording you find no help here. Tent training, protecting tent floor & inflatable sleeping mattress from dog's nails etc stuff are missing.
The best part of the book was dog's health checkup, signs of dehydration, paw hardening recipe etc.
Conclusion: If your hike lasts a day, the book is fine. If it lasts a week in the wilderness, your dogs will be in trouble unless you find some more information.
Customer Reviews:
thanks for the help.......2005-07-20
This book helped me so much the last time I went camping. I was always so scared to bring my dog with me...too many variables. My friend told me about this book and that it might help. It told me everything I really needed to know in a simplistic way. Gary Hoffman didn't make me feel any less intelligent for my lack of knowledge about camping with my dog. I got all the information I needed and the trip was a success. Next time I just might stay longer!
Hiking With Your Dog, is extremely helpful..........2005-06-09
Gary Hoffman's book, Hiking With Your Dog, is extremely helpful when backpacking with the family dogs. I consider myself a well informed person, but having information available in print is invaluable. It's not always easy to keep your facts straight while dogs bark, children yell and husbands fish. I would have liked even more information. I'm not concerned about typos. Content presented in a concise and simple manner, to me, means the difference between a wonderful camping trip and a disaster.
Informative read.......2005-06-06
This book is delightful presented as well as informative due to the very artistic and funny bone tickling illustrations. The author is obviously writing about something he has done many times and holds especially dear to his heart. There are two "loves" in this book - the rewarding pleasure of canine companionship enhancing the awesome grandeur of outdoor experience. A joy to read!
Poorly written, unhelpful.......2003-07-23
This is a very disappointing book. Almost anyone with dog experience and an 8th grade education could do a better job. The author states in his foreword that he makes no apologies for spelling or grammar mistakes. No excuse! There are errors of punctuation, grammar, and spelling throughout. This might be excusable if the information were of any help, but it's not. About 80% of the information is self-evident, 19% is speculative personal opinion, and only 1% is anything I was unaware of (and I'm not exactly a dog expert). The number of pages is misleading, as there are many blank pages or pages with almost no text, silly cartoons, or big type. The material could fit into about 20 pages of double-spaced text.
Don't waste your money on this book! I recommend Charlene Bell's book instead.
No so bad.......2003-03-19
This is the first "Dog hiking"-book I've seen that has something for the more difficult situations. The book has even short chapter about things like fording and bouldering. It still has the basics too.
No photos, just drawn pictures. Not very informational ones, except the ones about first aid.
Good book, but a bit short. Especially if you do longer, overnight hikes in difficult terrain. LaBelle's book "Guide to backpacking with your dog" is definetly better if you do shorter walks that last only a day. If you decide to buy it, avoid 1st edition. The 2nd edition is definetly improved version.

Book Description
“A beautifully written book.”—The Garden Journal
“A few garden writers offer prose that goes beyond how to spade and spray to convey the experience and pleasures of gardening. The late Elizabeth Lawrence was such a writer.”—Southern Living
“First published in 1957 and out-of-print for many years, this is a delightfully written and enormously informative introduction to the fascinating variety of little bulbs available to the gardener. The author discusses a wide variety of plants, both familiar and little-known, including crocuses, species daffodils, hardy cyclamen and lily-family members such as Brodiaea, Bessera, and Calochortus.”—American Horticulturist
Customer Reviews:
Little bulbs for little gardens.......2000-05-07
Don't be put off by the fact this book was written a few years ago, it's still quite newsworthy. I've been gardening for many years -- everything from a two-acre spread to a small urban garden but I never had to "think small" until I moved to the big city. This book has proved very helpful for resizing thoughts.
In "The Little Bulbs," Miss Lawrence covers everything from miniature daffodils to sqill, from crocuses to irises. Did you know there were miniature irises? Most if not all of the bulbs she describes are still around, and many more varieties exist besides, but this book will get you started and keep you going awhile. I haven't found anything newer with better practical knowledge.
Even if you own an estate, this book can help you. Miss Lawrence has a nice section on container planting which the British have done for years, and we are just beginning to do really well. Remember, bulbs exist for every climate. You can grow the tropical kind in-doors in colder areas (amaryllids), and grow those that require cold outside if you have freezing weather in winter. I like this book so much, I am ordered the hardcover to replace my old paperback which I'm giving to my daughter who is just beginning to garden.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful and engrossing........2004-02-08
I didn't know what to think when I got a copy of this book, but once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. The trials of Ruthie and the way she overcomes them is inspiring. The fact that this book is based on a true story reminds us of how far things have come in the last 70 years. This is a must read for anyone wanting to get a look at life in the South during the first half of the 20th century, especially from the perspective of a young African-American girl.
Damn this is GOOD!!!.......2003-06-04
i love this book it was compelling it grapped me from the first chapter! i love the part about the well.the other thing that got me was the chicken and how the author has a unique way of displaying symbolism throughout the whole book. I mean the book had everything in it, from humor to times i had to stop reading because it made me cry. i have a whole new outlook on life thanks to this book i appreciate life more. The author is new fresh and EXCITING!! Plus the best part was that it was an easy read i recommend everyone to read this book at least once. you will be very GLAD you did!!
