Book Description
This classic book is accepted internationally as the standard treatment of the mechanical properties of biological fluids, solids, tissues and organs. It is used widely as both a reference and textbook in this rapidly-growing field. Biomechanics presents a general outline of the discipline, with applications to bioengineering, physiology, medicine and surgery. The second edition reflects the broad advances that have been made in this field during the past decade, and adds numerous new topics. References have been brought up to date, and the widely-praised emphasis on formulating and solving problems has been strengthened with numerous new problems. This book begins with a unique historical introduction to the field of biomechanics, followed by a vital chapter which relates the definitions and vocabulary of applied mechanics to biological tissues. These tools are then used to treat in detail the mechanical properties of blood, including blood cells and vessels. The remaining chapters discuss the viscoelastic properties of biological fluids and solids, as well as the mechanics of muscle, bone and connective tissue.

The Bible.......2007-02-10
Professor Fung is considered the father of bioengineering and founder of biomechanics.
Winner of Timoshenko and Poiseulle medals he's an Engineer that started to study physiology when his mother was diagnosed with glaucoma in 1957.
I am trained as a Medical Doctor and Molecular Biologist but being the son of a Professor of Civil Engineering made me understand the importance that structural engineering has in Medicine and Biology.
Now I am interested in nuclear matrix and lamins(as they are connected to aging phenomena) so I am training myself in Biomechanics, and I found that this book is the strating point.
I recommend this book to all Structural Engineers,Biomedical Engineers, MDs and Cellular and Molecular Biologists that want to understand this field.
A Masterpiece in Biomechanics!.......2002-12-02
What I would say is not a comprehensive review of what the great book talks, but just telling you a truth: if you have engineering and mathamatics background and wanna combine your background to do research in physiology, Fung's book is absolutely a must-buy. This book is profound, but it is actually rooted in nearly all fields of biomechanics research.
It is a conclusion for biomechanics research till 1980's; also this book is a truly great reference for all current researchers who are interested in biomedical research in point of view of a mathamatician and engineer.
Simply the Best.......2000-06-16
Fung takes a continuum mechanics approach to the principles that underly the human body. All of the ideas in the text are backed up with solid research and easy to understand equations, as well as text descriptions. Fung is also responsible for researching many of the ideas of biomechanics, and so, the text takes on a personal view not found in other books. All in all, the best book out there for introductory biomechanics, but one that you will use for the rest of your life.

Book Description
INTRODUCTION
A long, narrow sliver of land, clinging to the edge of a continent, Chile has often drawn attention to itself for its wholly implausible shape. Seen in the pages of an atlas, the country's outline strikes you as aberrant and fantastical: almost 4000km in length (the equivalent of Scotland to Nigeria), and with an average width of just 180km, the very idea of it seems absurd. Once you're on Chilean soil, however, these boundaries make perfect sense, and visitors quickly realize that Chile is a geographically self-contained unit. The Andes, the great mountain range that forms its eastern border, are a formidable barrier of rock and ice that cuts the country off from Argentina and Bolivia. The Atacama Desert, a thousand-kilometre stretch of parched wasteland separates it from Peru to the north. And to the west, only a few islands dotted in the Pacific Ocean break the waves that roll onto Chile's coast from Australasia.
All this has created a country distinct from the rest of South America, and one that defies many people's expectations of an Andean country. It is Westernized, relatively affluent, and - with the exception of the infamous military Pinochet regime of the 1970s and 1980s - boasts a long tradition of political stability and orderly government. It is, without doubt, one of the safest and most relaxing South American countries to travel in. Its buses are comfortable and run on time. Its people are warm, hospitable and generous. And, by regional standards, its police are honest, helpful and reliable.
Above all, though, it is for its remote and dizzyingly beautiful landscapes that visitors head to Chile. With its population of fifteen million largely confined to a handful of major cities, and a land area three times greater than the UK's, much of Chile is covered by vast tracts of scarcely touched wilderness - places where you can be days from the nearest tarred road, and where it's not unusual to stumble upon steaming hot springs, gleaming white salt flats or emerald lakes, and have them all to yourself. Few countries, moreover, can match the astounding contrasts of scenery you'll find here, ranging from the driest desert in the world to immense ice fields and glaciers. Spread between these extremes is a kaleidoscope of panoramas, taking in sun-baked scrubland, lush vineyards and orchards, virgin temperate rainforest, dramatic fjords and bleak Patagonian steppes. Towering over it all is the long, jagged spine of the Andes, punctuated by colossal peaks and smouldering volcanoes.
You can experience this wilderness in whatever style you choose - Chile is not a developing country, and you don't have to slum it while you're here. There are plenty of modest, inexpensive accommodation options and camping facilities up and down the country, while those on a more generous budget will find increasing numbers of luxurious, beautifully designed lodges in spectacular locations, particularly in the south. Whatever your budget, you'll probably want to take advantage of the numerous possibilities for outdoor activities, whether it be jeep rides, bird-watching, skiing, horse trekking, wine tours, hiking, volcano climbing, sea kayaking, white-water rafting or fly-fishing - all offered by an increasing number of local outfitters, and comprehensively detailed in this book. If you have less active plans in mind, you can sit back and take in Chile's scenery from various ferry rides in the south, on cheap LanChile flights or on organized bus tours from most of the main cities. However you do it, you won't be disappointed.

A Descent Guide to Chile.......2007-08-23
The Rough Guide to Chile is a good guide book that offers more than its name suggests. I used it in Santiago, Valparaiso and Vina del Mar to discover what Chile could offer to a traveller. I got a chance to exchange information about other books on Chile, with the help of which some other visitors were, like me, trying to find out their way through the country. As far as the content is considered, the Rough Guide to Chile surpassed all of them. However, Chile is a fast-changing country: some attractions and places are classics, yet others come and go. The book requires minor updates for the latter. In addition, information about specific places--museums for example--is brief.
Nothing rought about this guide!.......2002-11-24
If you're planning a trip to Chile (or wish you were) this is the book to get you ready. Dealing with everything from money exchange to lodgings to transportation, it has invaluable information to carry you from "tourist" to "traveler." The content is divided by geographical sections (much as the country itself is) to make it easier to plan a trip or get the specific information you need on a trip already planned. If you're interested in getting away from the escorted "back on the bus in five minutes" type of trip, this guide will get you there. There are wonderful descriptions of each region and its attractions, plus names, phone numbers and prices for food, lodging, transportation...even the location of the cambios de change for changing money, ATMs, and tourist informtion centers in each town.
We picked this up by chance in a local library and found it so valuable we're planning to purchase our own copy before our upcoming visit. We'll let you know how well it represented reality when we return!
very detailed information - but no enthusiasm.......2002-11-21
The Rough Guide is full of useful, accurate information ( a little out of date) - but the writers lack a certain enthusiasm for this country. An enthusiasm that can be found in other books such as the Open Road guide.
very useful.......2002-08-06
having spent a couple of months travelling through chile, i got to know my rough guide well, and had chance to compare to many of the other guide books out there, there are speciality books which cover other areas better and in more detail, some only available in chile. but of the mainstream guides this is definately the best. the cultural information is where the rough guides stand out, in fact a couple of our favorite places in Chile didnt even warrant a mention in one of the better known guide book series. the section on accomodation was the most lacking although occasionaly useful, as none of the guide books seem to have discovered the backpackers hostels which cover chile. but aside from this if you want a guide to chile, this is one of the best.
Excellent Travel Guide.......2001-04-29
My husband and I loved this book. We are senior citizens who wanted to spend a few days in Chile on our own, prior to a cuise around Cape Horn to Argentina. This guide gave us very accurate, detailed information in many areas: transportation, hotels, restaurants, sights. We used it during the cruise to tailor our own shore excursions. It contains every bit of information that you would need for a very enjoyable trip to Chile. Chile is safe, very modern, and beautiful. English is not common but people were friendly and very well educated. Take a phrase book along. If you speak Spanish, you will not want to leave. This is a better experience than Mexico.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous teaching kit.......2007-08-17
I'm teaching my 6-year-old about the middle ages this year and I am so looking forward to using this kit. It is a great little kit. The book has lots of pictures and information about everything in the kit and how knights lived and became knights and everything. I am so impressed with it. It has a catapult for her to build, a signet ring with different letters to put on it and make a seal from some clay (included). There's a proclamation from her as a king making someone a knight that she has to colour and seal with her ring and clay. There are stickers to put on a diagram of a knight. There's a little cardboard castle with people, a draw bridge, and a portcullis that you can lay seige to with the catapult you built. There is a game of nine man's morris (a game they played in medieval times). There's a map of places they went to in the crusades. I am very impressed and can't wait to use this with my daughter. Very well done and good quality. I will get another one of these when I teach my son about middle ages as well.

Goldilocks Returns

Amazon.com
When three hipster bears leave their '50s style split-level house to go bopping off into the woods while their piping-hot homemade chili cools off, they never expect a golden-tressed visitor to come calling. But come she does, and soon is wreaking unintentional havoc on the Bear family's stylishly decorated home. First she sits on Papa Bear's 1902 Scottish "Ladderback" chair, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. But it's too hard. So she tries Mama Bear's Danish "Egg" chair, circa 1957, but alas! It's too soft. Finally Goldilocks settles on Baby Bear's 1946 "LCW" chair, by Charles and Ray Eames, and it's just right--until it smashes into smithereens beneath her. All this activity has made our little trespasser hungry, so she checks out the chili in its Hungarian pottery by Eva Zeisel with spoons by Italian artisan Gio Ponti. Too hot, too cold, just right. And so on, up to the bedrooms, where the returning Bear family finds her, snoozing away in Baby Bear's bed.
This hilarious and highly stylized version of the classic tale is rendered "moderne" by Steven Guarnaccia's comic, skilled illustrations of a host of international designers' furnishings. Young readers do not need to be modern art buffs to appreciate the familiar story with its modish depictions of the beatnik Bear family. But anyone with a soupçon of design knowledge will also delight in the allusions, and appreciate the illustrated endsheets that list the names and creators of each decorative object. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Something is different in this retelling of the classic story of the girl with the golden locks. Goldilocks, as usual, discovers the three bears' house in the woods. She ventures inside and makes herself at home, sitting in the chairs, samples the meal laid on the table, and taking a nap. But the bears-they're an entirely new breed! Steven Guarnaccia's comical, stylized artwork delivers bears who are hip; they have a sense of style and a love of design. Their 1950s split-level home is filled with cool furniture created by an international crowd of celebrated designers, from Alvar Aalto to Charles and Ray Eames to Isamu Noguchi!
Children and parents alike will delight in this new edition of the beloved story. And when they look at the endsheets, which provide the name of each decorative object and its creator, they may even pick up a design tip or two. STEVEN GUARNACCIA is an illustrator and designer whose comic and stylized illustrations have appeared in many national and international magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times, Abitare, and House and Garden. Guarnaccia has also designed greeting cards for the Museum of Modern Art, New York and watches for Swatch . He is the author of several books for children and adults. He lives and works in Montclair, New Jersey, with his wife and son. 32 pages of illustrations in full color, 9 x 13"

A new spin on an old favorite.......2000-08-02
I bought this book for a friend of mine who collects 50's Modern furnishings, as a housewarming gift and now I'm back for a copy of my own! It's a must have for anyone who loves Modern design and likes a new twist on tradition. The illustrations are fantastic and very hip. What a great way to turn a child (or adult for that matter) onto Modern design. A definate baby shower gift for me from now on.
Ultra-hip, suburban updating of classic fable.......2000-06-18
Let's face it -- as a fairy tale, "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" is pretty flabby stuff. Not a whole heck of a lot happens except for a broken chair and an unmade bed, and while the repetitive, predictable nature of the tale may be "just right" for kids, it's somewhat less enthralling for adults. That's why Steven Guarnaccia's retelling of the old chestnut is so refreshing. His whimsical illustrations set the story in mid-1950's America, making Papa Bear a swingin' beatnik, while Mama wears capri-pants and hoop earrings and Baby comes complete with Davy Crockett coonskin cap.
Goldilocks has been updated as well into a preteen bobby-soxer, sporting a Patty McCormack "Bad Seed" hairdo, an excellent touch.
Guarnaccia's light, humorous tone is perfect for this slight cautionary tale. For those curious, the endpapers include a pictoral labelling of the designers and years of the various furnishings sprinkled throughout the illustrations -- everyone from Terence Conran to George Nelson is represented. This book is great fun for kids and adults alike.
Goldilocks is one kool kat, man!.......2000-05-11
This is Goldilocks like you've never seen it before. My sonand I BOTH adore this book -- he loves the crazy story, and I get akick out of the tres moderne illustrations. In fact, I must confess that I bought 2 copies -- 1 to read and 1 to cut up and use for artwork in my son's room. Enjoy!

Nice selection of stencils.......2000-05-16
The stencil patterns in this book are large and easy to trace onto your stencil - I have used them on walls, mirrors (with frosted paint) and on furniture to make my home look more Indian without having to spend a lot of money...
Nice, but large Indian Designs.......2000-01-17
The book contains 60 large stencil designs on regular paper (not cut out!) of various subjects. There are floral borders, tree of life and other botanicals, as well as elephants, cows, horses, and some people playing traditonal Indian instruments.
According to the back cover, the authors travelled extensively in India to collect the designs, copying stencils used by village artisans and Hindu priests. The designs have traditionally been used to decorate the floors of temples, etc, so this is probably why they are so large in scale (usually one design per 8x10 page).
I still found it a worthwhile collection from which to pull Indian designs.
Customer Reviews:
A Disappointment.......2000-07-10
A great majority of the book is on breeding. Only 29 pages of the book actually have information on general care, while 69 pages are devoted to breeding. In general, the whole book seems to have more pictures than actual information. This is really a book for those who are into taking care of high quality goldfish (those that are worth around 100 dollars that you can't buy at a pet store) and are interested in breeding the perfect goldfish. If you, like me, have no desire to breed goldfish and are happy enough with taking care of goldfish availabe at pet stores, this probably isn't the book for you. I expected to read lots of detailed information on goldfish and was disappointed when I discovered that almost all of the information was very general and that there wasn't much on general care. I was still able to pick up a few good things. But overall, I expected much more from a book by the Goldfish Society of America.
A must-have for the beginning goldfish enthusiast........2000-06-05
This is a great book for the beginning goldfish keeper. It gives detailed instructions for setting up your tank, tells what the best way to feed your goldfish is and provides general care tips for how to keep your goldfish healthy and happy. The pictures are full color and depict a wide range of excellent specimens of varying breeds. There is a large section devoted to the breeding of you goldfishes that provides a good base of information. (Although you might want to consult several sources before you start any breeding program to gain a better grasp of the details of the process.) And since it is put out by The Goldfish Society of America it gives you pictures and detailed descriptions of the standards that are used to judge the more exotic breeds of goldfish. The disease section is a little brief and should probably be expanded, but overall it is a well-rounded introduction to the goldfish as a pet. Again it is a must-have for the beginning goldfish keeper.

More about displaying works than the art of ceramics.......2006-12-31
Annabel Freyberg has placed a much needed book before the public, a book that offers both written and illustrated suggestions on how to focus on and feature ceramics works in the household, her point being that plates and vessels should be appreciated as art rather than as utilitarian works. And with this goal in mind she succeeds with her cause in LIVING WITH CERAMICS.
For this reader and viewer the book could have been so much more. Yes, the ceramic works displayed on the pages of this book are lovely examples from around the world and her suggestions on how to place with significantly in the living space are solid. The missing piece that the cover of the book suggests is the huge world of clay art in all of its myriad and magnificent forms created by gifted artists of international stature are not included. This collection with the covers of this book disappoints the true ceramic art collector: where are the significant works by Frey, Soldner, Freedman, Voulkos etc etc etc?
This book is well written and well designed but is definitely more geared toward the interior decorator than the collector of important ceramic art. Grady Harp, December 06
Not Just Decor.......2000-06-25
This book may look like an issue of Martha Stuart's "Living," but is acts, in a sense, as a visual journey througn the history of ceramic art. The book takes the reader through many ceramic periods, with informative historical text accompianing the great collection of colorplates. I am a ceramic artist, and I bought the book because it is difficult to find a recent book about the history of ceramics. I think "Living with Ceramics," is quite well rounded and provides information for the antique enthusiast, ceramisist, interior designer, or art collector.

Solid Information (as you would expect from Rodale Press).......2006-01-13
Quite useful! I love the sample gardens (knot garden, informal garden, kitchen garden). The book is a hefty 600+ pages so there's a lot of information here.
There are 267 pages covering an encyclopedia of herbs from Aconite to Yerba Santa. Each plant has a page or more with a mix of history, planting care, and uses. The plant photos are in black and white.
I believe a new edition of this is available with more illustrations.
Not the Ordinary "how to get well with herbs" book.......2002-05-25
This book tells how to grow herbs, (with a variety of herb garden designing ideas) what the herbs and "spices" are used with and for. Thru-out the book there are "recipes" of different ways to use the herbs. How to make scented beads, soap,
herbal oils, candles, perfumes, plus recipes for different food dishes. That is by no means all of the book, just a small part. Great reference for those who are looking to learn more about herbs, as well as gardeners.

Book Description
This narrative relates the day-to-day experience of an aid worker in Yemen. The author casts an anthropological eye on the large range of people - permanent officials in aid organizations, temporary aid workers, the bureaucrats of the host country and community leaders - involved in the activities. Showing the differences of interests and values among these people, he questions the wisdom of imposed development.

don't despair.......2002-06-30
This is a great book, despite the depressing title, which outlines the sort of barriers developers face and the grave errors developers/would-be developers/donors etc. make. Despite being published in 1996 it doesn't feel out of date (I know nothing about Yemen, though) For seasoned developers the tales are not new, although it is nice to have them published rather than have them sound like urban legends - the way the horror stories are traded. I think this is most useful to people interested in development or just starting (if they missed this sort of thing in their education). I know that the end was what rang true to me personally, the way the final meeting was pushed along and people didn't have a chance to air grievances. Personally, I like to read this stuff to keep me in the right place and help me remember to watch, as an outsider, what I am doing. It IS easy to get carried away with a focus on simply going through the paces to provide what the donor wants. Instead, development is an art, and while much blame can be laid at the feet of donors, practitioners have responsibilities too.
I further recommend reading Jonathan ( I think) Klitgaard.
