Great guide, but not perfect.......2007-01-05

The maps were indispensible aids in getting around Shanghai and if I ever go back to that town and were only allowed ten pages from this book, I'd include the maps. I met another traveler in Shanghai who lost this guide and doubled back several blocks to find it again. He did find it again and was glad he did.

That being said, it's not the gospel. Shanghai's a big town and there's no way to cover every single place to eat or thing to do. Given the short descriptions for many of the activities, there can't be enough room to explain everything you may need to get to them... the Propaganda Poster Museum is one such example. It's way way way off a beaten track, but I found it after asking a local security guard and showing the picture in the book.

I'm ticked off the guide says there's a taco restaurant in Shanghai. I went there and the "taco" was more a Chinese interpretation of the Mexican classic. It was tasty, but NOT authentic. If you're homesick for good Mexican food, Shanghai's not the right place to be.

Overall, I'm very glad I had this guide with me in Shanghai and I plan to continue to get Lonely Planet guides for my travels.

Your Very Basic guidebook.......2006-03-12

... and I emphasize the word "basic". Fold-out maps with Chinese characters is helpful, but don't forget to bring a magnifying glass in order to read the maps. Found Time Out Shanghai much much more informative.

Arthritis in the Horse.......2001-06-30

This book discusses and explains the processes, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the degenerative joint disease arthritis.

Mr Ramey, D.V.M. has produced an excellent balanced guide especially for the horse owner or user whereby he comprehensively discusses the degenerative disease of arthritis in the horse from diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.

To start with this book gives an explanation of how the joints of a horse should be before going on to further explain how the joints of their horse may be changing as a result of arthritis.

A vet will be able to diagnose the condition by performing various tests upon a horse, including flexion tests as used regularly when "vetting" a horse for purchase. More technical investigations can be made with the use of x-rays etc. to further diagnose the extent of the arthritis, each of which are described. Other less freely available procedures are also discussed. Scarily, by the time the horse shows any clinical signs the disease is quite advanced. "One of the biggest problems with arthritis is that some horses who have it don't limp... Damage can be going on in a joint for a long time before the horse finally starts showing you that his leg hurts."

If a horse has been diagnosed with arthritis it is desirable to know what treatment options are suitable depending upon the type of arthritis being treated, acute or chronic. Ramey categorises these as Physical Therapies, Medical Therapies, Surgical Treatments and Alternative Therapies.

If you have a horse that is currently undergoing treatment by a vet, this guide will give you more information about the various treatments, reasons for their use and side effects, along with Ramey's opinion as to its effectiveness.

Throughout the book Ramey gives his honest opinion that most likely prognosis may not be good, but certainly succeeds in offering the reader support and "At the very least, after reading this book you should understand your treatment options and approach treatment with reasonable expectations of success."

The understanding this book provides gives the owner/user the ability to effectively discuss with their vet appropriate options some of which may not have previously been considered. Any such efforts may be beneficial to the long-term welfare of the horse in question.

This book is an invaluable addition to my bookcase.

This book was helpful, even though it had many medical terms in it which were confusing at first, it does a super job explaining all the aspects of a horses' arthritis, such as how they get it, how to treat it and much more. Great buy for a horse owner!

However, for newer Volumes, consider the classifieds in the back of Linn's, where you can pick up a newer and/or a current Volume for what you would have to pay here for one that is a few years old.

Bali's challenging and wild landscape nonetheless lends to cultivated gardens, with its abundance of rain making for a natural watering system and its hot climate encouraging many flowers. Landscape gardener/author William Warren introduces Bali and its landscapes: while one might think his gardening observations largely specific to the region, any who live in a hot, humid, rain-abundance climate will find plenty of insights and tips for both design and Balinese influence - tips easily transportable to a similar environmental condition, making this a top pick for Florida and other areas with tropical environments and libraries strong in gardening inspiration.

Absolutely stunning!.......2006-01-13

This very large and beautifully printed book is a stand out in our library of tropical paradises. It offers a very nice overview of the entire country, the culture and some of the exotic gardens, both large and small, that grace what must be a real Garden of Eden. Many of the photos also identify some of the plants in the image but to do so entirely would dictate another page of descriptions because of the sheer number of varieties shown. There is also a great deal of very informative information about the people who created and/or designed not only the gardens but also some of the homes and resorts. I have actually only skimmed over the text of the book but the photos alone are well worth twice the price. If you're planning a tropical garden, greenhouse or just a room, this book will give you ideas and inspirations to nearly overpower your dreams. An absolute visual feast!

Balinese Gardens.......2003-10-23

This richly illustrated production captures the natural landscape and manmade gardens of Bali in 250 sumptuous color photos by renowned international photographer Luca Invernizzi Tettoni. The first half of the book walks us right through the Garden of Eden, past rushing rivers and volcanic mountains to Bali's flourishing profusion of plants, flowers, fruits, palaces, temples, pavilions, and traditional village gardens. Landscape designer William Warren calls in specialists to provide ecological and cultural information to complement the riotous, full-page photographical/geographical orgies. Bali's natural beauty leaps out at you from every page--exotic hothouse hibiscus, bougainvillea and frangipani flowers, sacred springs, rice paddies, and ornamental sculptures. The book uncovers the Balinese people at home in their lush green environment: we see the deeply engrained Balinese reverence for nature and its role in and impact on their culture. Nature informs and underlies the widespread (animist-based) religious beliefs and practices on Bali: as an example, the waringin or banyan tree, as the sacred abode of spirits, is considered to be an auspicious spot to construct a temple or shrine.

Not the Best Availableý Flaws Due Mostly to Design / Editing.......2000-07-04

There are some very nice glossy photos in here, but once I got it home and started studying it, the disappointment set in. The book heavily features hotel gardens, and I mean the massive gardens like the Bali Hyatt, not the intimate, small hotel gardens like the Tandjung Sari's.

It is good that the editor includes photos of some of Bali's most interesting gardens, such as Tirta Gangga, Walter Spies' Tjampuhan residence, and several sites designed by Made Wijaya, but these photos do not always do the places justice (strange angles, views of the gardens that do not show their best aspects). I concede that the exception to this is the section devoted to the gardens of the Batujimbar estate, which is the second best part of this book. But many of the photos left me wanting more variety, smaller margins (larger actual photos), and better angles.

The best chapter is Traditional Gardens in Bali, but again the photos are often disappointingly small. And, from this chapter, conspicuously absent, were photos of Ubud's Agung Rai Museum gardens and any number of single-family (not sacred, public, or hotel) Balinese gardens.

Somewhat useful is the chapter on Balinese plants, but because it lacks stats like height and shade / sun preferences, it is not great as a reference for the person interested in some serious landscaping or plant identification.

Text does have interesting tidbits about garden history, thanks to contributor Adrian Vickers (and, for the Ubud text, William Warren).

Visually, not as bold as "style" books can and should be. I put other books on my coffee table.

Very authentic book on the Bali Garden........1999-02-02

This is the source of book if u need a good reference of Bali gardens (or any TROPICAL LUSH gardens). Enough for someone who wants to make the garden looks tropical. Plenty of pictures and good text. Anyone interested in the tropical garden style should buy this one.

confusing for studens.......2002-01-31

I had to buy and use this book for my CAD class as a beginner in 1997. R12 was nothing like r14 or 2000, but more complex at the time. I liked this step by step instruction with exercises, but most of us were still very confused. Plus, we found more than several mistakes in this book. Another thing is that I just checked the new book,AutoCAD for Interior Design and Space Planning Using 2000 at a book store, but after more than a few years, I still recognized the same drawings in this book. So I agree with one of the reviewers on Beverly L. Kirkpatrick's books that they like to reuse whatever they created in the past....or other books. they are just lazy or what?

Interesting topics but disorganized.......2005-05-28

I would recommend O'Keefe's "The Complete Reference, Framemaker 7" instead in almost all areas.

This book suffers from disorganization common in multi authored books. Its sections on structured FM offer little more than is in the pdf documents that come with FM. I was hoping for clever tricks using structured FM, but didn't find any in Ms. Ethier's book.

One area where many other books on FM are weak is in numbering. There are, however, excellent sources on the internet for FM numbering that make up for this deficiency. In Ms. Ethier's book, although a whole chapter is devoted to numbering, most of the numbering examples are fairly basic "how to set up an outlined numbering system".

Ms. Ethier's book does have a few good sections, such as running H/F variables and thumb tabs. In many areas, it introduces interesting concepts, such as database publishing, but is too incomplete to be more than just an introduction.

Although the layout of the book is well done (nice fonts, pretty pages, etc.), it often sounds more like what one might get stopping some FM expert in the hall and asking them about a concept. The expertise is there, but the organization is sloppy. For instance, on page 20, it says "if I run a conversion table on a brief document that uses only two paragraph formats and a character format, I get a sinple converstion table like you see in figure 2-1". However, figure 2-1 shows four paragraph formats and no character format.
