        4 out of 5 stars Plain sailing.......2007-09-01

My 'rough guides' were very useful on a back-packing trip to Crete and several other Greek islands. Their practical advice is quite down-to-earth and helpful for someone travelling on a budget, not an itinerary.

3 out of 5 stars Rough guide disappointment.......2006-09-21

My husband and I traveled to Greece in July. We have used the Rough Guide on may other trips, but thought the Greek Island Rough Guide was not very accurate and lacked necessary information. Many hotels were not included and prices were much higher than we were led to believe. There was not enough information about riding the ferry system, which is a huge part of traveling the Greek Isles. There were few restaurants listed. The book is so large and heavy, yet practically useless to us.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible informative, opinionated and smart guide to the Greek Islands.......2005-10-05

Having just completed a 2 week sailing trip in the Greek Islands in September 2005 (Cyclades) I thoroughly endorse the Rough Guide to the Greek Islands. Several of my crewmates had a variety of guide books including the Lonely Planet, DK Eyewitness, Cadogan, and an outstanding Cyclades picture guide that seems only available in Greece. All were good and useful in different ways but overall, the Rough Guide proved itself to be the guide book of choice for information on each island (7) we visited whether tiny, small, medium or large. The intelligent opinions, overviews, brief history, listings and recommendations for each place were very good and up to date. The Rough Guide was much more useful than the rather weak Lonely Planet that I'd only give 3 stars (decent maps save it from 2 stars) that was consistently left behind. Rough Guide's maps were a bit simple (always) but each gave a good general overview that actually helped to understand each islands general type and layout at a glance. Of course a decent map from the tourist information office or scooter rental shop is always more useful for more thorough exploration especially on larger islands but the Rough Guide maps were a good start nonetheless - and sometimes better than the ad infested maps available for free. My one gripe is that I wish a section on Athens was included - most people use Athens to arrive and depart from and probably spend a couple of days there at the start or end of their trip. If you plan to spend time here it may be worth getting the Rough Guide to Greece which seems to contain the entire Greek Island text. However, for my purposes, the Greek Islands edition proved an excellent guide for my trip and proved indispensible time and again in guiding us to islands worth visiting and those less deserving of our time - tourist traps politely dismissed (Nousa on Paros for example was exactly on target). Anyway, once on an island, the Rough Guide was very good at selecting good places to eat and visit (we slept on board the boat but checked out a few of the accommodation listings out of interest - good). No guide book is perfect - it's always well worth taking a few for perspective, but I'd recommend the Rough Guide as your basic guide over the Lonely Planet any day of the week. Personally I love DK guides too for the visual overview of islands and sights but as I mentioned there's an even better pictorial guide with excellent history and details of each islands places of greatest interest. It may only be available in Greece (printed in Athens) but the Englisg translation is very good and it's definitely worth picking up over there. I also liked the Cadogan very much for it's history and guidance. But if I was only allowed one guide book (never!), it'd have to the Rough Guide

        Book Description

In this rousing account of the first true cowboys, Newbery Medalist Russell Freedman brings to life the days when the vaqueros rounded up cattle, brought down steers, and tamed wild broncos. In the service of wealthy Spanish conquistadors in the sixteenth century, Mexican ranch hands began herd-
ing cattle, often riding barefoot. They soon developed and perfected the skills for this dangerous work and became expert horsemen. Hundred of years later the vaqueros shared their expertise with the inexperienced cowboys of the American West, who adopted their techniques and their distinctive clothing, tools, and even lingo. Yet today it is the cowboy whom we remember, while the vaquero has all but disappeared from history.
The vaqueros are at last given their due in this dramatic narrative, lushly illustrated with beautiful period paintings and drawings.

Finally a young persons book with a different perspective on cowboys. The origins and role of the vaquero in America is discussed in a scholarly and insightful manner geared for young readers. If you are looking for a book about the traditional view of the cowboy than look elsewhere. The author, Russell Freedman does an excellent job describing how the Vaqueros were the first of their kind, their role in rodeos, where and how they lived on haciendas and ranchos, what they did at rodeos , the tools they used , the contests and games and the last of the vaqueros. These original cowherders were poor Indian laborers who were subject to the rich Spanish land owners who dominated the landscape of America after the conquest by the European Spaniards. This book is a good history lesson about life in the southwest and Mexico(one and the same at this particular point in history)during Spanish rule. This book is an excellent choice for a classroom or library in the middle or high school level for further enrichment in the education process. Limited English speaking students may find the language difficult but there are many Spanish words intersperced throughout the lessons to draw their interest. The drawings and photographs are well done; I only wish this book was presented in a larger format. This is a good book for a student to write a book report on and share the information within to the class. Highly recommended for students and adults alike who enjoy history.

In The Days of the Vaqueros
        By Russell Freedman

If you are looking for a book about horses this is not a book for you. This is a book about the Vaqueros and only the Vaqueros. This book starts out well but after a while is starts to get boring. Vaqueros were the first cowboys. They started out as slaves for the Spaniards. This book is for young adults. A kid that is 11 or older could read it but they might have trouble with it.

5 out of 5 stars A Sucessful Young Adult Book.......2002-11-02

Russell Freedman's, "In the Days of the Vaqueros" was written for young adults and in this endeavor it suceeds. It is a 70 page hard back book with numerous high quality paintings, sketches and photographs. He tells the story of the Vaqueros from the arrival of the Spanish in Mexico up to modern days. When I purchased the book, I was hoping to find a book written for adults. Yet, I was not dissapointed. The book's production values are very high and I really enjoyed the art work.

An excellent and thorough accounting of the Airedale Terrier. But its scope goes beyond just the history of the breed but tackled in detail the desirable physical characteristics and the proper grooming. Outstanding visual aids leave nothing to the imagination on the proper length of coat when stripping. Again and again, I come back to this book when I am grooming. It compares the bone structure with other canines as to fully explain and offer understanding as to what is desirable physically and why. This is a must for every Airdale Terrier owner's collection.

I have a yearly garage sale. I am a librarian. Therefore, I've read or skimmed many, many books on the subject. I found myself ordering this one again and again from other libraries. Then, I realized it was out of print. Panic! What if the other libraries decided the condition was so bad they had to get rid of it. So, I bought a used copy through Amazon. It's a great manual for having a garage sale, but what makes it invaluable is the price guide. When I have no idea what to price something (like the things I have to ask my husband what they are?), I look here for guidelines. In my opinion, it is the best garage sale book around.

[Gardening with Prairie Plants by Sally Wasowski], Native Plant Society of Texas News, 20 (March April 2002): 5.

Convincing people that native flora are ideal for their home landscape should be easy. Colorful native plants flower as early as late February and continue to bloom until late June. After a respite during the intense heat and withering drought of summer, a riot of blossoms emerge again from September until the first frost of late autumn. Few gardens comprised of commercially popular non-native plants can compete with the duration of such a showy display. And few can match the low maintenance, the reduced water requirements, and the environmental benefits of native-flora horticulture.

Sally Wasowski's latest book, Gardening with Prairie Plants, is aimed at converting skeptics who doubt that native-plant landscapes can make any difference in the world. These are people who argue the futility of trying to reverse the course of things in any given region. In reply, Wasowski points to native-plant landscaping as one way to preserve biodiversity. Biodiversity is like the human auto-immune system; it provides an eco-system with the means for successfully adjusting to disruptive new conditions.
Wasowski has a good chance of succeeding against the skeptics because her volume-reasonably-priced and readily available in Texas bookstores-is excellently produced. Not only is her well-informed commentary accessible to the average reader, but Andy Wasowski's accompanying color photographs are spectacular. The publisher wisely opted to print large illustrations, and the 241 that appear in Gardening with Prairie Plants prove the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words. Since Texas is a prairie state, there are attractive photos of Brown County, Quitaque, Gruene, Fort Worth and Lubbock, among other Lone Star State locales.

Gardening with Prairie Plants commences with several instructive definitions, such as the difference between short-grass prairies, which tend to be found in dry regions subject to very hot weather, and long-grass prairies, which tend to be found in wet regions subject to very cold weather. But such distinctions can become somewhat more complex, and Wasowski negotiates various qualifications in an easy-to-understand way. Her book then proceeds to consider the design, installation and maintenance of prairie gardens. This section is highlighted by photographs of homes, schools and museums exemplifying successful transitions to native landscaping. The impressive experiment at Selah Ranch in Johnson City is also featured.

Most of Wasowski's book is devoted to plant profiles, which comprise a richly illustrated section of the volume and are accompanied by helpful horticultural data and numerous floral distribution maps. The flowers populating this portion of the book are so appealingly presented that it will be hard for some readers to resist wanting to adopt all of them. Consider, for example, the allure of the beautiful photograph of needle-and-thread (Hesperostipa comata), accompanied by this description: "Needle-and-thread sways in the slightest wind with a motion like water, and the awns have a silvery cast. ... Wind blows the `needle' onto the soil. The threadlike 5-to-8-inch awn is twisted behind the needle, and as it unwinds, the seed is literally drilled into the soil."

Gardening with Prairie Plants is an admirable work. It will be cherished by anyone devoted to native flora, but it will appeal equally to those who have as yet made only a modest foray into native-plant landscaping. Gardening with Prairie Plants is not only extraordinarily useful, it is also exceptionally beautiful-a lavishly designed book for enthusiast and dreamer alike.

William J. Scheick, a former NPSOT vice-president, is also a member of the Central Texas Horticulture Council and a frequent contributor to Texas Gardener.

                  Book Description

Author Chris Lytle had modest career aspirations. He merely wanted to be the next Walter Cronkite. But instead of being offered a job in the newsroom, he was offered a job in the sales department. He took the sales job and became an "accidental salesperson."

Most people don't choose sales as a career. Sales chooses them--and they end up wondering how to make the most of a profession they were never prepared for.

They don't have to wonder anymore. In THE ACCIDENTAL SALESPERSON, Lytle gives readers the road map for excelling in sales. Lively and entertaining, this somewhat unorthodox guide is packed with thought-provoking axioms, humorous and instructive anecdotes, specific strategies, and powerful tools--everything readers need to master essential lessons in sales and professionalism.

Readers will find there are some things THE ACCIDENTAL SALESPERSON lacks--dull theories, manipulative methods, and high-pressure tactics. But with the wealth of money-generating, career-building techniques it does provide, we don't think those items will be missed.

1 out of 5 stars I ACTUALLY READ THE BOOK...........2007-10-04

I read this book and can attest that this book is NOT what it seems to be. The reviews claim this to be the best sales book of all time, but these reviews lack capacity in what is acutally contianed in this book.

The book shows you gimmicks and silly methods used for prospecting. The real world deals with professionals. I am a stock broker and would not want to be associated with these type of methods or have them by any means reflect my line of business.

I would recommend two books: 1. "How to Master the Art of Selling" by Tom Hopkins 2. "Advanced Selling Strategies: The Proven System of Sales Ideas, Methods, and Techniques Used by Top Salespeople Everywhere" by Brian Tracy. These are real books with so much information to be absorbed under one read.

I won't lie to you and tell you that one single book outhere is the best. But these two books combined is the best sales modus you will develop.

5 out of 5 stars Shortcut to success.......2007-07-19

This work is intented for those who, as the author (or as me), have been launched towards a profession that could earn your own money but could stress your nervous system. This guide helps you to focus on the right directive without being distracted by jaws-men or uneducated-chieves.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Salesperson.......2007-07-07

Chris Lytle has put together an excellent process for sales success. While there is little new in sales under the sun, his treatment of the selling process is fresh and very effective.

I've been using his pre-approach letters and his preparation process for sales interviews with solid success. His techniques work!

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent investment.......2007-05-11

I have been purchasing this book for my new Sales Reps for the last several years. They always come back and thank me. It helped me tremendously and many others. Each story / example is short but full of insight. Not your typical sales manual.

5 out of 5 stars Down To Earth Guide.......2007-03-17

Chris has put together a practical guide for all sales people. This is a must-read for anyone finding themselves trying to make a living in the world of selling.

                    Book Description

In this day and age it's no longer shocking to hear of an athlete who has strangled his coach or one who has been arrested for violence and drug use. One can drive down the street and see bumper stickers suggesting people Question Authority or I don't lie, cheat or steal unnecessarily"". Respect for authority in both professional sports and in society is at an all time low. In his book It Takes Respect, Aeneas Williams describes the biblical model for honoring and submitting to those in authority over us.

3 out of 5 stars Good man; Flawed Book.......2001-12-27

Let me first say that Aneas Williams is an excellent example to follow, a real man who shows us what respect really means. I do not for a minute doubt his sincerity, and my rating is a rating of his book, not his character. Unfortunately, out of nine chapters, this book goes about 2-7. Two of the chapters are really good.. one about marriage, one about learning from a mentor. Beyond these, though, there is little about what we're really looking for.. --respect--. Aeneas talks about how he respected a coach here and there, but there's not much beyond these mentions. It's mostly just a timeline of events in his public life (i.e., football games). The "private life," where respect really grows and shows, is rarely mentioned. It was a great concept for a book, but poorly executed.

                    5 out of 5 stars Aeneas Williams - A good man!.......2000-05-12

Aeneas Williams is a good man on, and especially off the football field. In his book, he shares with the reader the experiences of his life, and how God influenced his decisions. Not only does he preach God's word but he lives it too. He challenges his readers to examine their own lives, and the decisions they make. It is a book demonstrating that it is imparative to acknowledge authority figures in our lives. This book is not just for football enthusiasts, anyone and everyone would benefit from reading it.
