5 out of 5 stars Basic text abridged.......2004-07-08

America: Past and Present, Brief 6th edition by Robert A. Divine, T. H. Breen, George M. Frederickson, R. Hal Williams, Ariela J. Gross, H. W. Brands, Randy Roberts (Pearson Longman Publishers) America Past and Present, Brief Sixth Edition, is de-rived from the full-length America Past and Present, Seventh Edition. The Brief Sixth Edition shares the goal of its parent text: to present a clear, relevant, and balanced history of the United States as an unfolding story of national development, from the days of the earliest inhabitants to the present. The goal of the abridgement is to produce a condensation true to the original in all its dimensions-a miniaturized replica or bonsai, as it were-retaining the style and tone, and the interpretations, with their nuances and subtleties intact. This Brief Sixth Edition contains about two-thirds of the text of the full-length book, more than one-half of the maps, charts, and figures, and a commensurate proportion of the illustration program.

Presenting American history as the story of a nation in flux, America Past and Present, Brief Sixth Edition, goes beyond recounting the major events that have helped to shape the nation-the wars fought, the presidents elected, the treaties signed. The impact of change on human lives adds a vital dimension to the understanding of history. How did the American Revolution affect the lives of ordinary citizens? What was it like for both blacks and whites to live in a plantation society? How did the shift from an agrarian to an industrial economy affect men and women alike? What impact did technology, in the form of the auto-mobile and the computer, have on patterns of life in the twentieth century? As the narrative explores answers to these and other questions, it blends the excitement and drama of the American experience with in-sights about the social, political, economic, and cultural issues that underlie it.
America Past and Present, Brief Sixth Edition, espouses no particular ideology or point of view; instead the text encourages readers to explore the American past and reach their own conclusions about its significance in their lives. And yet the text does not avoid examining controversial issues but seeks to offer balanced and reasoned judgments on such morally charged subjects as the nature of slavery and the use of nuclear weapons. Although history may rarely repeat itself, the story of the American past is relevant to the problems and dilemmas facing the American nation and the American people today.
      TEXT REVISIONS
The principal revisions in America Past and Present, Brief Sixth Edition, have been undertaken with the goals of clarifying the prose and sharpening the analysis, taking account of new scholarship, and offering new perspectives. As in previous editions, the roles that women and minority groups have played in the nation's development merit particular attention. These people appear not as passive witnesses to the historical narrative but as active participants in its evolution. New and expanded material throughout the chapters includes the following:
      * Chapter 1, expanded coverage of Native Americans before encounter with Europeans.
      * Chapter 6, new opening vignette highlighting the search for balance between public morality and private freedom in the new republic; additional coverage of political and social reform.
      * Chapter 9, expanded discussion of treaties negotiated with Great Britain following the War of 1812.
      * Chapter 11, revised and reorganized to enhance and emphasize coverage of the lives and lifestyles of slaves and their experience of slavery.
      * Chapter 12, expanded discussion of black abolitionists and women's rights reformers.
      * Chapter 16, restructured and revised to devote greater attention to lives of former slaves during Reconstruction; includes new sections on Black Codes and Jim Crow laws.
      * Chapter 17, new opening vignette exploring a Native American's experience of conquest and exploitation of the American West.
      * Chapter 26, new opening vignette highlighting personal experiences of hardship during the Great Depression; revised discussion of the stock market crash of 1929.
      * Chapter 30, expanded discussion of the student protest movement of the 1960s.
      * Chapter 31, shifts in the labor movement in the 1970s, including the rise of public employee unions; the changing American family at the turn of the century.
Chapter 33, revised and restructured to concentrate on the shifting economy of the 1990s to the present and the role of government policy in shaping American economy; updated with new discussion of foreign policy and homeland defense post-September 11, including new sections on the war on terrorism and war in Iraq.
      FORMAT AND FEATURES
The more spacious page design of America Past and Present, Brief Sixth Edition, allows for larger maps and figures as well as the addition of marginal definitions of key terms in each chapter.
America Past and Present, Brief Sixth Edition, includes eight essays entitled "We Americans," each focusing on some aspect of diversity or multiculturalism in America. Some of the "We Americans" essays explore the roles different ethnic groups have played in shaping the nation; others examine change and constancy in the American population and national ethos. The eight "We Americans" essays are:
      * Learning to Live with Diversity in the Eighteenth Century: What Is an American? (Chapter 4)
      * Counting the People: The Federal Census of 1790 (Chapter 7)
      * Women of Southern Households (Chapter 11) The Irish in Boston, 1845-1865 (Chapter 13)
      * Hispanic America After 1848: A Case Study in Majority Rule (Chapter 14)
      * Blacks in Blue: The Buffalo Soldiers in the West (Chapter 17)
      * Ellis Island: Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears (Chapter 19)
      * Unintended Consequences: The Second Great Migration (Chapter 30)
A second feature in America Past and Present, Brief Sixth Edition, is the "A Look at the Past" photographs. These illustrations of material culture artifacts show students some of the variety of materials historians use to learn about and interpret the past. Captions with the photographs include critical thinking questions that encourage students to reflect on the historical purpose and significance of the object pictured.

5 out of 5 stars Quick, inexpensive, honest.......2005-10-02

The quality of this paperback isn't perfect, but they never claimed it was. I got what I expected, quickly, and at a very reasonable price. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent AP Textbook! Got me a 5!.......2005-08-06

I purchased this textbook to self study for the AP US history exam and can say I was thoroughly satisfied. The text and prose is very well written, you never need to "hunt" for the main point. The information is incredibly good; besides highly detailed resources in the main text, each chapter features an in-depth essay on a certain subject, many of which appeared as multiple choice questions on the 2005 AP exam. Most of the text reads like a detailed story, and keeps one's interest quite well. A note of warning: the authors write this at the college level and students with limited vocabularies may have some difficulty comprehending the text.

Political cartoons and other visual media are very apt and many of the cartoons in the book were the same ones that appeared on my AP and SAT in multiple choice questions.

Some reviewers have complained of a liberal skew, I could certainly see how they would arrive at that conclusion. Chapter titles like "Triumph of the White Man's Democracy" and labeling Columbus as an "invader" seem a bit presumptuous. Additionally, the book tends to put a disproportionate emphasis on women/minorites, however, so does the AP examination. Divine seems not to be so much as liberal, but as challenging commonly held assumptions. For instance, he makes it very clear that FDR's New Deal plan did nothing to bring America out of the Great depression, it only made the period until WWII bearable for some. Divine is quick to criticize the failures of Wilson's 14 points and the economic crisis imposed by the Carter administration. Either way, Divine has facts to back up his statements, facts which can easily be incorporated into AP essays requiring an opinion.

Overall this is an excellent resource, and I highly recommend it, as it got me a 5 on the AP, and 780 on the SAT US History exam.

          1 out of 5 stars Biased.........2004-04-02

This book came from a total liberal slant. It tells history in a false way, and twists things to fit the author's point of view. Plus, it is almost anti-america. Everything in there has a negative tone to it, and describes the white males as basically destroying everyone else, and how america is so evil. please. America is the longest standing country out there, yet the authors seem to think our founders were all cracked. BTW I use this book for my high school AP US history class.

          5 out of 5 stars very good.......2004-02-27

This is a very nice textbook, and is meant for those who have already had a background in history. I use it for my AP class and really like it. The book reads very well - unlike a lot of history books it doesn't use complex grammar and spelling to sound sophisticated - and has a lot of detail as well as a liberal and well-founded opinion; in addition it has very good diagrams, illustrations, and a chronology for each chapter. It is a real book - there are no built in study guides, self review, or page-consuming explainations of simple concepts that most textbooks have. I reccomend this for all who wish to seriously study history, but not for those who want to skim a book for a quick review.

          5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2002-08-04

This makes an excellent undergraduate textbook in US history -- also good just for a general read.

A comprehensive, humane, and bemused tour of the dog-human relationship, Dog's Best Friend combines anecdote, research, and reportage to illuminate our complex rapport with our cherished canine companions. Tracking our national obsession with an animal that now outnumbers children in American households, Mark Derr chronicles the evolution of "the culture of the dog" from the prehistoric domestication of tamed wolves to the modern horrors of overbreeding and inbreeding.

Passionate about his subject and intent on sharing his zeal, Derr defends dogs with wit and flare, producing here a quirky, informative, and fitting tribute to our love affair with canines big and small.

I'm enjoying reading this book, but want to note that on p. 201 ("The Ugliness of Beauty"), the author mentions that his dog, Max, "loved chocolate above all other foods." For many dogs, CHOCOLATE IS TOXIC!!! DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG CHOCOLATE!!!! If in doubt, ask your veterinarian.

This is a very useful and informative book about dogs and why AKC breeds have so many health problems: diabetes, bad hips, seizures, etc.

3 out of 5 stars Good in theory, poor in facts.......1999-11-30

Although this book has as its basis a good premise, the author takes generous liberties with the truth in order to make his point. Instead of helping his cause, however, these inaccuracies detract from the overall credibility of the work.

1 out of 5 stars This book contains considerable mis-information........1998-06-12

There is a lot of misinformastion about the bull-and-terrier breeds in this book. The author apparently had one bad experience with a bull terrier. As a result, he made sweeping statements that are both erroneous and hurtful about several other dog breeds. Anyone who advertises himself as a 'dog expert' should spend more time on checking the facts.

5 out of 5 stars BOONIE DOGS RULE!.......1997-07-21

This is another book review by Wolfie and Kansas, the boonie dogs from Toto, Guam. When we saw the fetching picture on the cover of "Dog's Best Friend", we thought the book would be primarily about dogs. Actually, the book is more about the humans who breed, train and work and play with dogs. While we think a concentration on dogs would have been more interesting, the sections on these humans are generally pretty good. The book also contains some fascinating history of the dog-human relationship, and even a couple mentions of our island.

While the individual humans profiled in this book almost all qualify as dogs' best friends, the theme running through this book is that many humans and human organizations have been harming dogs. This harm is done in two ways. First, humans have a negative effect on dog behavior through misguided and cruel training. Author Mark Derr comes close to agreeing with our position that there is no such thing as a bad dog. There are only good dogs trained by bad humans. We do have some reservations about Derr's opinions as to what constitutes "good" or "bad" dog behavior. For example, Derr agrees with our noncanine animal companions of primate derivation that chasing cars is "bad".

Author Derr also asserts that humans harm dogs genetically by inbreeding purebreds. Derr praises the hybrid vigor of mixed-breed dogs, i.e.--us! Indeed, the physical description of "the perfect dog" in the final chapter of "Dog's Best Friend" is very close to a description of Wolfie.

We have seen Derr's theories about the genetic superiority of boonie dogs confirmed here in Toto. Foolish humans here spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars to import purebreds, who die within a rew weeks of exposure to local parasites that we barely notice. Meanwhile, boonie dogs are often sent to the slammer ("shelter") to be killed ("put to sleep") or broken ("fixed"). Hopefully humans will read this important book, stop overbreeding purebreds, and give us boonie dogs good homes in exchange for the companionship and protection that we can provide so well

Over the past year I have been very interested in campaign collectibles. This is the perfect guide. There are fifty categories ranging from buttons and pins to fans, clocks, banks, pennants, and postcards. Over 1700 items are catolouged in this guide. Each category has an introduction describing the items in general with a brief history. Each individual item in the book is presented with a photograph, the size of the item, year produced, and worth in dollars of the item. The book tells you how to pick out reproductions from real vintage items, and contains campaign materials from George Washington to George Bush. There's also a checklist, glossary, and list of campaign slogans in the back. I highly recommend this book.

Ron L. Engeland has made his living as an organic garlic grower in Washington State for nearly two decades. He has cultivated more than 450 strains from all over the world. If you want to grow incredible garlic for yourself, he's the man to listen to.

              Book Description

The first garlic book written specifically for organic gardeners and small-scale farmers
Growing Great Garlic is the definitive grower's guide written by a small scale farmer who makes his living growing over 200 strains of garlic. Commercial growers will want to consult this book regularly.
              The author tells us:
            • which strains to plant

            • when to fertilize

            • when to plant

            • when to prune flower stalks

            • how to plant

            • when to harvest
Plus, how to store, market, and process the crop.
Growing Great Garlic makes a genuine contribution in the field of garlic classification that will help the public recognize several distinct varietal types of garlic.

I cannot comment on the end results yet, since harvest is still 10 months away. This book introduces the types of garlic and recommends several organic methods of soil preparation. The greatest revelation was when to plant. All the local home garden supply stores stock garlic for spring planting. The author recommends fall, something subsequently confirmed by a local commercial grower. Hopefully with the fertilizing and time of planting tips, my results won't be quite so dismal.

5 out of 5 stars Geared for larger than home garden but still great.......2006-12-11

I listen to YBYG on NPR and Mike McGrath is always touting growing garlic. So I found Gourmet Garlic Gardens and bought an assortment of their garlic. This book came for Christmas last year and though I had already planted my garlic, it gave me some good pointers for preparing for my next crop. I harvested almost all the garlic I planted and used this book to prepare the ground for my second crop. I have a VERY small garlic garden (under 50 sq ft) so some of the techniques they outline in the book won't work.

The history and outline of the varities of garlic is great. It's also important to know what sort of garlic grows best in your area. Most of the stuff you get in the supermarket is softneck garlic (that's all they grow in CA) while the garlic with the best flavor is the hardneck garlic.

Get this book, get some good garlic (it's more expensive but you only have to buy it once) and grow some great garlic!

This is the bible on the growing of garlic. It includes both highly technical and highly practical information.
(This is actually the fourth copy of this book that I have bought: one for myself about two years ago, and then other copies for garlic growing friends!)

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Guide to Growing Garlic........2003-02-03

Most gardeners don't think of growing garlic, because it is so plentiful and inexpensive at the local grocery store. The problem is that there is only one kind of garlic available at most grocery stores and markets, and that limits variety to be sure! There are over 72 different cultivated varieties of garlic! Each variety has its own distinct aroma, flavor, and level of spicyness. There are even hot garlics! Elephant garlic isn't a true garlic, so it doesn't count.

This book is an indispensible introduction to, and guide for growing garlic, and it even has some places listed where you can get the different cultivars of garlic.

The book is arranged into 3 parts. The introduction deals with the natural history of garlic. The second part deals with the different varieties, and the difference between the hardneck and softnect varieties. It also deals with the history of cultivated garlic. Examples of different garlic include Korean Red, which is a hot garlic, Spanish Roja, Polish, German Red, Inchilium Purple, Silver Skin(the variety usually found in stores), Montana Giant, etc. Each one has its own characteristics and each one has different storage time, growing time, and harvest time.

The third part deals with the cultivation techniques and gardening techniques associated with growing great garlic.
The author has gone to great pains to explain in detail the different methods used in growing garlic, from a commercial scale to the individual organic farmer to the individual home gardener. It is extremely helpful to the garlic novice, that is for sure.

I have used the methods outlined in this book, and in 1999, I liked this book so much that I ended up finding an organic garlic grower in Texas, and got 7 varieties of garlic and started them in a raised garden in October of 1999. In just 8 months I had my first harvest, and it was really cool to grow such distinct garlic in my own garden. This stuff is also expensive, the rare garlics, so it is advantageous to grow your own.

This book is softcover, 229 pages.
I highly recommend it to the home gardener who wants to try something new and delightful.

                  Book Description

This story-in-verse explores the beauty of the Pacific Northwest through the ecosystem of an evergreen tree. The tree's life cycle is illustrated by the variety of plants and animals it supports. Andrea Gabriel's pastel images — soft greens, mellow blues, and cozy browns — perfectly complement the gentle, informative text. Jennifer Blomgren's sensitive use of language — "Its tender young needles sparkled with dew, / like jewels in the wind, as the baby tree grew" — make the book appealing to both children and parents in any locale.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  5 out of 5 stars Evergreen Tree.......2005-02-11

For those who enjoyed the first book "Where Do I Sleep" by this author & illustrator team, this second book is a lovely sequel.
The artwork is beautiful. The colors are deep as the northwest forest they describe and successfully evoke its atmosphere. The illustrations are more developed than the first book and though not literal in representation, they do illustrate successfully the complexity of the forest ecosystem and give the feeling of being there as the mist rises in the morning.

The writing, however, is the main draw to this book. Ms. Blomgren utilizes the same vivid imagery as she did in her first book, "Where Do I Sleep", while giving accurate information:
'The Indian pipe with its pale ghostly white
is fed by the tree roots and needs little light'

                  or of the pine-white butterflies:
                  '...they touch down
where the sweet sun-filled air meets the canopy's crown.'

I recommend this book above many of the children's books out there. It is entertaining and informative.

Like Bukowski, Annie makes you feel as if you're re-living actual events from the authors' life. Are we? Who knows. Very real, yet clever and qurky, witty and sexy! Annie's insights on human behavior are profound. She's got decades of psychological knowledge crammed into her 20-something mind. Maybe hosting a TV dating show gave her some of this wisdom. But these are very enjoyable, very funny perfectly short stories! Reminds me of Steve Martin's books.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and smart characters.......2000-05-05

Well, some of the characters were smart but all of them were amusing. I liked how the author managed to get the reader involved with these characters in such a short time. I also liked how the stories kind of had "relationship morals" at the end...without being preachy or anything.

5 out of 5 stars Short and fun!.......2000-04-28

I liked how short her short stories were. I wouldn't have minded if some of them were longer though.I like how clever most of her characters are and I like how honest she is when it comes to relationships. I loved watching Annie Wood on her tv show, "BZZZ!" and that's why I bought the book. But, I'm glad I did. I passed it on to my sister and she's loving it too!
