Book Description
The first observations on heat shock proteins and the heart were made in the 1980s, and interest in these proteins has increased over the decade. In the last few years there has been an exponential growth in the number of papers published on heat shock proteins and the heart. Heat shock proteins have been implicated in a number of cardiovascular research areas including ischemia, hypertrophy, aging, and atherosclerosis, and this list is growing.
The purpose of
Heat Shock Proteins and the Cardiovascular System is to give an overview of our current understanding of the heat shock proteins in the cardiovascular system, and to summarize the approaches to the study of heat shock proteins in the heart. This volume assembles results from a number of different cardiovascular fields, and provides a comprehensive review of heat shock proteins in the cardiovascular system.
Book Description
The classic guide to the Evergreen State, Moon Handbooks: Washington leads you to the Olympic Peninsula's lush rain forests and long sandy beaches, glacier-clad Cascades summits, friendly eastern Washington towns, and the urban delights of Seattle. Author Don Pitcher helps readers hike on Mount St. Helens, whale-watch at Westport, shop at farmers markets, enjoy the best brewpubs and coffeehouses, and experience city nightlife. He also includes details on intriguing and offbeat destinations, such as the graves of Chief Seattle and Jimi Hendrix, and the Bavarian-style village of Leavenworth. "The best guidebook I've found is the well-written Moon Handbooks: Washington." -- The Washington Post
Customer Reviews:
Moon Handbooks are amazing.......2007-09-28
The first Moon book that I purchased several years ago was the book on Oregon. We made significant travel arrangements based on the information in that book and we were never disappointed.
An upcoming trip to Seattle/San Juans is based on the information in the Washington book. The real beauty is that the book leads you to the most likely area to visit, gives references to hotels, etc., then you can complete your research by reviewing up-to-date information about that spot/hotel online. We chose Orcas island for 2 days before heading to Seattle and I do not expect to be disappointed.
The authors are even-handed and complete --- they are not elitists, reviewing only the high-end accomodations. They have a good sample of a broad range of places. They point out lesser known restaurants and scenic spots as well.
I have found their advice in the Oregon, Washington, Coastal California and New England books to be quite excellent.
I have purchased quite a few different travel books in the past, but Moon Handbooks are my travel book of choice.
Moon Handbooks Washington.......2007-08-06
Even though published in 2003, this is by far the best advailable WA guide book. I would not think of visiting a state without the appropriate Moon supplemented by the WPA guidebook for that state[published in the thirties]
Great info in a bulky package.......2007-06-28
You'll find no fancy illustrations in this book - simply good information.
The author makes some snarky comments toward a local Christian ministry - which seems pointless - and includes a great deal of information specifically geared toward homosexual travelers. I didn't realize that was a niche market, but evidently it is.
Regardless, the book is quite thorough, if opinionated. I prefer the "Hidden Washington" books for pointers on places off the tourist track.
Recommended.
More useable info than any other book.......2005-09-05
This book covered every area we were interested in visiting. It was dead on the restaurant and lodging reviews. Prices have gone up for lodging but other than that very informative and well used on our trip. We had the Frommers book and off the beaten path book. The Moon book was the one we kept going back to.
Incredible Guide Book!.......2000-04-01
The Washington Handbook is the best book I have found for information on the state of Washington! It is truly comprehensive in it's coverage of the entire state. Being a member of a military family, moving to a new location can be a very frightening prospect. This book has the type of in-depth information that makes Washington feel familiar without ever even being there! I've looked at MANY travel guides (Fodor's, etc.) and the Washington Handbook outshines them all.

Great resource, must read..........2005-08-02
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in traveling to the San Juan Islands. It gives helpful advice on everything from hotels to restaurants to activities. It has more indepth information than most other travel books. I found their recommendations on ferry travel very useful. Highly recommend.
An excellent travel planning and guidebook resource.......2003-03-06

Customer Reviews:
Covers a lot of territory!.......2007-07-03
This book is the best for the money--I compared it to the Frommer's guide in the bookstore, and this one has twice as much information, and covers both states from top to bottom, including some pretty unusual attractions. Great for day trips from Baltimore, too.
Book Description
This new guide from the award-winning Moon Handbooks series features an intimate look at one of the lesser-known natural wonders of the U.S., with information on Portland, the formation of the gorge, the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, outdoor activities, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book About The Columbia River Area.......2007-09-08
MOON HANDBOOKS COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE: INCLUDING COMPLETE COVERAGE OF PORTLAND is a wonderful book about northern Oregon and southern Washington, including complete coverage of the Portland-Vancouver metro area. Thus, you get information on both rural pleasures, such as hiking and white-water rafting, and urban ones, including shopping, dining, and museums. This is a book that anyone with an interest in geography must own.
Wonderful Guidebook!.......2006-11-10
I am making a long journey next year that will include the Columbia Gorge and this book really helps define the areas I wish to see. It has been really helpful in the lodging as well as the parks and hiking. I am a photographer and plan on taking numerous images on this trip, so I like to know well ahead of time what I will be seeing. I highly recommend this guidebook to those that visit this area.
Like having a local with you on vacation!.......2006-07-22
We had never been to the northwest before and wanted to get the most out of our first trip. This guide was like having a local with us on the trip. We were able to get to the numerous falls, rapids, windsurfing areas and hikes without wandering around. We stayed in a great hotel that was reported on and picked from the recommended restaurants. The book was well worn when we got home. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Throrough and Fun!.......2002-05-23
I also own the Pennsylvania Handbook by the same author, and I'm continually amazed by her ability to search out the odd little museums and restaurants that really make a destination unique. In Maryland, you can polka the night away after visiting an out-of-the-way military code museum. And, I enjoy the sly humor that kind of sneaks up on you: "In the film Star Wars, Luke was misdirected when he was told to beware The Dockside. This friendly, casual restaurant...is a good place for inexpensive meals from breakfast ($5) through dinner ($6-9). Lots of Crisfield watermen eat here." (from the Eastern Shore section). Like all Moon Handbooks, this one makes the ordinary come alive, covers the whole area extremely well, and is fun to read.

Compact, comprehensive.......2007-02-20
A compact size for such a comprehensive title. Received by veterinarians and farmers whole- heartedly in the homeopathic care of their animals. Divided into three parts, the major section is the materia medica followed by sections on nosodes and their uses and a clinical repertory.

Great Basics.......2002-10-24
Sharon Newman has done a fantastic job of putting the basics in this book. I always refer to this book when I am doing the binding on my quilts - her method is the best and the mitered corners are beautiful. I also refer to it when trying to decide what size blocks I want for a certain size finished quilt. The charts are great! I highly recomend this book for all quilters. I buy copies for friends frequently.
Book Description
With the growing recognition that a wisely and sensitively planted garden has a lot to offer to wildlife and the food web, more and more people are looking for ways to make their gardens environmentally friendly. However, gardeners have tended to assume that they need a lot of space to create habitats for wildlife and to evoke wild and natural places. In Natural Gardening in Small Spaces, renowned plantsman Noël Kingsbury refutes that presumption, showing how even in a small garden you can create a sustainable ecosystem that looks great --- and, once established, largely looks after itself. More than 150 glorious photographs of small natural gardens provide visual confirmation of Noël Kingsbury's contention that even the smallest garden can provide a natural haven.

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 Hands-On Training.......2007-01-11
Good price, quick delivery, and brand new. All positive feedback. The only slightly negative thing is one of the corners of the book was damaged, but the book is fully usable.
Terrible.......2006-06-09
I had to buy this book for a class, it is terrible. All the author does is have you go click here and drag this to go through the exercises with no explainations. It's a waste of time and money.
Best book out there to learn Dreamweaver.......2006-03-26
I have taken several classes to learn Dreamweaver but still didn't handle to use Dreamweaver very well...until I found this book which answered all the questions I had to master Dreamweaver. This book is the best book out there so far for beginner; A must have.
I Was Forced To Read This For A Class, and Will Never Be The Same Again.......2006-03-12
This has to be the worst book ever written. Do yourself a favor, and spare yourself from the pain. The author thinks it's cute to make little quips that a 3 year might think of and put little wink things behind them, you know what I mean ;). The problem is they just annoy you to no end. The other annoying thing is that it takes the author a page and half to say "Hit the Enter Key". He spends page after page talking of inane things, hawking other books, and making stupid, juvenile comments. The book is a laborious 700 pages long, an agonizing 700 pages long. I have noticed that they have fired the dweeb who wrote it, Garo Green (who I always imagined him as a pasty white, fat 50 year old geek-you'll see what I mean if you have the misfortune of being forced to use this book), and significantly shorten the book, even though Dreamweaver 8 has many more features. I write this with the full knowledge that I will be selling my copy of this at the end of the semester, and that this review will adversely affect my selling price, but the book is really that bad. Unless you need it for a course, do not buy it. I promise you will regret it.
The best thing out there!.......2006-02-23
This book follows along with the online lessons offered at lynda.com. The exercises in the CD-ROM are the same as those used online. As complimentary tools to one another, they are without any doubt, hands down, the best thing anywhere for learning Dreamweaver from scratch, whether you learn best visually, by listening, or by doing, or all of the above. (Believe me, I over-research everything.) I can't recommend strongly enough that you consider getting both the book/CD and the online tutorials at lynda.com. They offer free samples so you can test it out. Have the book in front of you, download the sample exercises from the CD, and start the online tutorial. You can flip back and forth on your computer between the tutorial and doing the exercises, and follow along (and take notes) in the book. As good as an expensive class (or better, since with this you can rewind, skip around, and take unlimited bathroom breaks)!
Product Description
Often rejected out of hand as a typesetting tool, Microsoft Word has greater typographic capabilities than even most long-time users realize. With a little tweaking, Word can produce type that few readers could distinguish from the best of Quark or InDesign. In this book, Aaron Shepard gives a tour of the depths of the program, describing the settings, commands, and manual adjustments you need to create type that no book reviewer will scoff at. Skeptical? This book's own typesetting is the proof!
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Pages.......2007-09-21
My wife started a publishing company. I am the typesetter. I just finished typesetting her book using MS Word and Aaron's book was indispensible! I knew how to use Word to type letters, etc, but to turn a manuscript into a professional quality book is a different matter. The book helped me tremendously. I even had a question and emailed the author--Aaron responded that same day with an answer. Highly recommend to those starting out in the POD publishing business. I don't think I even need to buy one of those thick MS WORD manuals now. He taught me what I needed to know (along with a fair amount of software savvy of my own). The book assumes a certain level of competence to begin with.
For Microsoft Word Users, Self Publishing Guides .......2007-08-04
Dear John: Letters From a Fan in New York City: An Interactive Book I wished I had purchased this book before I embarked on publishing my own. It would have saved me a lot of money and aggravation along the way. This is the economical way to go, especially if you don't have a graphic intensive book, but it can hangle graphics, too. Practical advice, and you can contact the author an the Yahoo forums.
Susan Kalior.......2007-05-25
Aaron Shepards, "Perfect Pages" is a treasure trove of 'how to's' for using MS Word to typeset and layout your manuscript for publishing. If you feared such a task would be too difficult, you will sigh with relief by following Aaron's simple instructions. Following these steps is like taking stairs to make the dream of being a published writer come true! I also highly recommend Aaron Shepards companion book, "Aiming at Amazon" to further actualize that dream. These books are the way to go.
The perfect gift for a small press or self-publisher.......2007-03-28
I picked this up along with the author's "Aiming At Amazon" since the small press I work with is POD and works with Word and Lightning Source (as does Shepherd) so I figured this would be an excellent educational tool for the basics of layout.
This really is an excellent introduction to the basics laying out a book in Microsoft Word (2003 and older--the 2007 update hasn't appeared yet, but it's on my want list!). Everything from properly sizing pages to tweaking text to make it look nicer is covered. The author's writing style is clear without being loaded with jargon, and he manages to describe visuals without pictures quite effectively.
There are a few things missing that I would have like to have seen covered. For example, he doesn't explain how to deal with the invisible, nonembeddable fonts that can make Lightning Source send your manuscript back to you for reformatting, nor does he explain the various formatting marks that you may have to go through if something doesn't turn out right. Additionally, his main focus seems to be the bare-bones approach to layout, rather than covering the little details that can make POD look just as good, if not better, than traditionally printed books.
However, I have found this to be an absolutely invaluable guide to basic layout. Shepherd is an expert at POD, and this is a definite plus for any POD publisher or self-publisher's bookshelf.
Make Word much better.......2007-02-10
This little book shows you how to use a word processor to produce results that are so much better than what the usual defaults produce. The book is oriented toward Microsoft Word, but I have used the ideas both in Word and OpenOffice to produce documents that look so much better on paper. Get this book and learn how really use a word processor.

Aimed at Windows Web developers of all levels, ASP.NET Unleashed provides a truly example-packed tutorial on beginning through advanced topics in ASP.NET programming. This mammoth text is never dense, and its clear sample code and ordering of topics will make it a strong choice for learning ASP.NET inside and out.
Dedicated to the principle that more is more, and weighing in at over 1,400 pages, this title covers all the bases in the new ASP.NET. Though it's comprehensive, the author takes care to present the basics of programming first. Early sections cover the basics of building Web pages with built-in ASP.NET Web controls. Only later on does the text range farther afield. Standout sections on mobile devices will let you work with today's wireless devices using both WAP and specialized HTML on the Pocket PC platform. Coverage on the extensive support for databases in ADO.NET and bound controls marks this book's practical focus on the basics. Material on tapping the powers of Microsoft SQL Server and the Indexing Service for providing full-text searches in Web sites is a notable standout here.
Later chapters look at basics of the much-advertised Web services, but also discuss ways to extend security and data sharing. Advanced bells and whistles are illustrated with a Web service to export pattern matching across Web sites--a worthwhile example. More advanced topics round out this book, including a tutorial on .NET APIs for common functions like the file system, strings, and regular expressions. A later section on combining ASP.NET with Microsoft Message Queue Server to provide asynchronous messaging will extend the range of your applications.
Final sections illustrate key concepts using a job site and an online store. And the last few pages in this 1,400-page tome are devoted to a handy reference for ASP.NET server-side controls, which is sure to be a useful feature.
Few titles combine so many useful examples, and the choice and ordering of material here makes this a book that will benefit two distinct audiences: those brand-new to ASP.NET and those who want to extend the basics with new capabilities using Web services and other high-end whistles and bells. There's a pleasing amount of white space in the text, which is dominated by dozens and dozens of clear examples rather than long-winded explanations, making this title ideal for those who like to learn new programming techniques through examples. --Richard Dragan

This is "IT" the book to learn ASP.NET web apps........2006-03-02
Over 1400 pages of pure web ASP.NET code, I say my friend, "this is the book that changed me." ASP.NET Unleashed teaches you how to implement the entire .NET v1.x Framework. This book contains the code in VB, but the CD has both C# and VB. I am a C# coder and I did not mind the VB examples one bit.
I came to this book barely able to write one line of C# code, but know I mastered DataGrid's, DataList's, Arrays (sorting and iterating), formatting (strings and dates), System.Text.RegularExpressions class (pattern matching and replace) and Client-Side Validation (Custom, Required Field, ), DataSets (GetXml, GetXmlSchema, WriteXml, ReadXml, ...), DataViews (sorting Asc and Desc), DataTables (insert, delete, Avg, Count, Max, StDev, Sum, define columns, add DataSets data, Var...), DataRelations, DataAdapter, DataReaders, XmlReaders, Creating Text and Binary Files, OleDbConnection, SqlConnection, Uploading Files, Session Variables, Caching objects, Xml Web Services, Compiling VB and C# into dll's, Symmetric Encryption and Asymmetric Encryption (SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, RC2, Rijndael, DES,...), Windows Authentication, Forms Authentication, Web.config (Roles, Authorization, deny users, Authentication, SQL Server connection string, ... ), Mobile Services, Performance Counters, Application Log, GDI+ Generating pictures on the fly (Brushes, Ellipses, Rectangles, Gradients, Save Jpeg or Gif, Drawing over saved pictures, Pies, Draw Lines, Round or SquareBorders, ...), Custom Postbacks with HtmlControls, AdRotators (binding with XML), ... There is plenty more objects and code, I didn't list. The book is no hype or not all talk and all the code is complete baby. Also all the code is on CD, so you do not have to type the code. The book's only flaw is that it does not show you how to bind data to objects (e.g DropDownList, Calendar, ...) inside of DataGrid's and DataList's using TemplateColumn(s), use custom JavaScript to validate, but the book only shows Microsoft's Control Validaters and the examples do not separate the VB and C# source file from the ASPX file, but by far this is "IT" the book to learn ASP.NET web apps. The book also does not show you how write Crystal Reports.
//The book does not show how to populate data into a DataGrid's object or use JavaScript triggers for validation, but here is my code snip
function Validate(name, num, tname){
var regInt=/^-[0-9]+$|^[0-9]+$/; //no decimals
if (document.getElementById(name).value == ''){
document.getElementById(name).style.color='White';
document.getElementById(name).style.background='Red';
document.getElementById('lblError').innerHTML='Cannot be empty';
btnDisable(name, tname);
}
else if (num == 'I' && regInt.test(document.getElementById(name).value) == false){
document.getElementById(name).style.color='White';
document.getElementById(name).style.background='Red';
document.getElementById('lblError').innerHTML='Integers only';
//document.getElementById(name).select();
btnDisable(name, tname);
}

The Oracle Data Provider for .NET driver (free) at "www . otn . oracle . com" can be used in the examples of the ASP.NET Unleashed book by replacing the SQL Server namespace "System.Data.SqlClient" with Oracle namespace "Oracle.DataAccess.Client" and replacing the Sql syntax with Oracle (e.g. SqlConnection becomes OracleConnection("User Id=schema_name;Password=schema_password;Data Source=oracle_sid_name"); ) The Oracle 10g Release 2 Database can be downloaded for free too "www . otn . oracle .com"
I also recommend learning Oracle PL/SQL Programming by Scott Urman ISBN 0-07-2191147-3. Also do not bother learning JSP, PHP, or Java Applets. Microsoft ASP.NET Framework is lighter, quicker, less code (for more action), more responsive, and is generations ahead of the pack.
One of my most valuable books.......2005-11-09
I'll keep this short and simple. This is what I call the "Bible" of ASP.NET books. I reference this quite a bit along with Internet articles on syntax and approaches.
PROS
- Code available for all examples in both VB and C#
- Author is very easy to understand, examples are great and to the point
- The book covers a ton and does it well
- The author provides explanations throughout explaining the transition from Classic ASP to ASP.NET
CONS
- Outdated, waiting for Third Edition for ASP 2.0 but still very useful if you're still coding in ASP.NET 1.1
- Author should have shown many examples referencing Stored Procedures which is what most people use...if you know what you're doing in application design
- No code behind? I'm sorry but this is just wrong...even if he's trying to show simple examples, it should all be done in code behind
- Lack of coverage on security...Check MSDN for that good stuff
Great ASP.NET Book.......2005-11-07
After reading some ASP.NET lists, here on Amazon, I decided to buy "ASP.NET Unleashed" to build up my web programming skills although I have access to some Microsoft Press books, especially the MCAD/MCSD training kits.
By far, this was the best book I have read about ASP.NET: it covers every topic I can think of, from simple web pages to security and building controls. ADO.NET, one of the most difficult topics for a beginner, is covered in great detail in more than 300 pages.
True, there are some problems for C# developers with the VB.NET-only code examples, but this book is really worth the 5 stars.
