I enjoyed this book but was extremely disappointed by the pessimism displayed by the writer. While he was extremely thorough in his examination of the many great places and activities in Zambia, his writing failed to get me excited about my trip. In fact, it made me dread going. Unfortunately, there aren't that many alternatives out there for this book. I would recommend talking to people who have traveled there over purchasing this book. They can give you an accurate portrayal of what Zambia is really like. And trust me -- it is great.

I found this guide book extremely helpful and informative. I would highly recommend it to anyone planning a trip (especially for the first time) to Zambia. It was very thorough and comprehensive. It answered my many questions--almost before I had them, and made me feel much more confident about traveling to a new country. The author is knowledgable and well-versed. The information and tips included are pertinent and timely. Don't leave for Zambia without it!

The best option available.......2005-04-07

I spent six weeks in Zambia in fall 2003. In preparing for the trip, I checked out all the available guidebooks and found two that were worth carrying along: the Lonely Planet guide and the Bradt guide. In all, Bradt was the best. It covered more territory, was stronger on areas of the country outside the major cities (Lusaka, Livingstone, etc.), had better coverage of safaris, and just generally seemed to be written by someone who knew the country -- not someone who had zipped in and out for guidebook purposes. There was almost never anything in the LP that wasn't in the Bradt; there were often things that were in the Bradt that weren't in the LP. Highly recommended.

Lavish and Visually Stunning .......2006-02-21

I acquired this book for jewelry design reference, it was highly recommended by a designer friend who trained in Paris for Jewelry design. The book contains just over 140 pages, the first 54 dedicated to text accompanied with quick sketches depicting Coco Chanel and her fashions; the remainder is filled with glossy photos of Chanel's jewelry creations, most in full color, a few other period stills in black and white. The photos are large, very sharp and show much of the fine detail of her jewelry, often dedicating one page to a single piece.

The book includes some images of objects of antiquity from which Chanel was clearly inspired, or in some cases copied directly. Chanel's Byzantium crosses are especially intriguing for capturing a look of great antiquity. I found the strong Renaissance and Baroque forms to be equally inspiring.

I would have welcomed an even more expansive book that included more photos however this book covers pieces from the 1930's to the 1960's, and some space has been dedicated to all the various styles.

I bought this book as a chemist looking for information on the chilli pepper. I certainly found it. The book is exquisitely illustrated with numerous colour plates, photographs and drawings. No excuse for confusing your Habanero with your Pimento. It has also got a very detailed bibliography. In between the covers there is a detailed account of the history of peppers, their biology and their uses. The author belongs to the prevailing culture that dictates that chemical structures should not appear in a popular science text, but that's my only criticism. I look forward to reading it again.

Peppers? Condiments?.......2004-05-11

Andrews is an agent of the dominant culture. She homogenizes chiles and attributes Christopher Columbus for discovering them. In fact, the book is dedicated to this age of exploration tyrant. What a joke! She gives a nice little backstory about why chiles are referred to as peppers and how chiles are the number one condiment in the world.
Wake up Andrews! Chile is not a condiment! It's a staple of various aboriginal cultures throughout the world: from Asia to the Americas. Andrews perpetuates the genocide of these cultures by degrading them to condiments! And this updated version of the book includes so-called new medicinal uses of chile. The aboriginal people of the world have been using chile for medicinal purposes for centuries upon centuries! So, what are we to do now? Attribute the medicinal discovery to Andrews, just as she attributed Columbus's "discovery"? Please. Orwell warned us that whoever controls the present now, controls the past. Therefore, the dominant culture can rewrite (continually) history as they see fit. Praising their alleged heroes for introducing "new" discoveries.

A Beautiful Book.......2000-05-28

First published in 1984, Peppers is one of the most beautiful books about any food plant we've ever seen. Author Jean Andrews is not only the artist behind 34 full color plates of the world's capsicums, she is also a thorough historian of food whose work has influenced many books about capsicums that followed hers. Peppers is to the capsicum family what Redcliffe Salaman's The History and Social Influence of the Potato is to solanum tuberosum, with the bonus of color illustrations. Andrews' book explores the origins of the plant, its travels beyond South America, its biological and economic story, its multiple varieties, its most recent high tech implications, and ends with several recipes, and a photographic glossary of botanical terms.
