I was on one of those tv show/ movie tours in NYC recently and the tour guide had the most interesting stories to tell about the city. After the tour was over, I asked her to please tell me where she got all of her information. She explained to me that the NYC government requires that tour guides pass a test to get a tour guide license. In order to pass that test, they recommend that you study the Michelin NYC Green Guide. I wanted to make sure, so I called the licensing division and asked them what I needed to do to prepare for the exam - sure enough, they said to get the Michelin Green Guide NYC!! This travel guide has to be good!

The best guide to the cultural attractions of New York.......1998-08-21

This is the best guide available for walking tours of the cultural attractions of the Big Apple. I've used this and earlier versions of this book off and on for 25 years, both when I lived in New York and subsequently. The ratings of New York's major and minor sites from one to three stars are spot on, just as the Michelin Green Guides for London and Paris are. Useful both for the tourist with a few days to spend in New York as well as the resident New Yorker who needs to haul visitors around town to those attractions usually disdained by natives.

What's in the Michelin Green Guide to New York City? Seemingly everything! Full disclosure: This native New Yorker bought the GG to study for the test on becoming a licensed tour guide. Friends who are guides strongly suggested the Green Guide over the Red, for whatever reason. A sampling of sections in GG lists a history of NYC, population growth, famous authors and playwrights, architecture, sports, restaurants, shopping and sightseeing. And that is only the first 75 pages --before one gets to actual sightseeing and walking tours. There is so much information packed between the green covers, it's a wonder how anyone could digest it in less than 10-readings! This leads to the question of the utility of GG for the average tourist. The helpful word from this reviewer is to cherry pick GG; only glean the information you will actually need! If your visit doesn't include many museums,-skip that section. If your restaurants and plays have been pre-selected for you, skip over those as well. Narrow GG down to encompass your immediate "need to know". Don't attempt to read all of GG-OR to see "all" of New York in one visit. Scale down and GG will help you. And by all means, be adventurous by taking public transportation! Avoid taxis if possible and don't get trapped on those tour buss during peak hours. Two final words on GG: This native did not catch any factual slip ups and as it says above, it's ALL here. Someone put a lot of effort into GG and it shows.

The real scoop on NYC!.......2000-03-26

A great book that gives you the details on museums and locations of interest. I've been to NYC several times, but found the floorplan of the Metropolitan to be helpful...so this trip I can focus on areas where I haven't spent time. Also reviewed museums I may decide to see this time, based on the details in the guide. Even if I miss some of them, the book gives good details, so I feel as tho' I haven't missed everything! Maps are helpful, with suggested daily tours areas... it is good to know what is realistic to see in one day! I look forward to my next trip to NYC...I will bring this book for reference!

A gem for a third grade teacher!.......2000-07-01

This book is perfect for the third grade curriculum that I teach. We are supposed to cover multicultural lessons as stated by the standards. This book lends itself beautifully for this. After purchasing a "Felix" type rabbit for our mascot, I used the book to travel to different countries, conveniently the ones that Felix also visited. By using the activity book that can also be purchased, each child had a world map and we placed stickers as we visited each land that Felix had visited, and also completed activities,and minor research about each country. Rome, one of the places visited was a great introduction to the Olympics that will be happening in Australia. The visit to the land of knights and ladies was perfect for our introduction into fairy tales.(Folk Literature-3rd grade standard)Finally, a visit to an Indian settlement. The Plains Indians is also part of our social studies curriculum. Not only does this book give us a brief insight into many cultures, the students love having a class mascot and can't wait to see what area we will get a peek into next.

Sweet little stuffed Felix escaped during a museums visit from Sophie, his fellow from baby times. He started a journey into the past, sending Sophie letters from every station. You can pull out the letters from their envelopes and read about Felix adventures in History. He wondered about the knights in mediveal castles, joined the vikings and send a construction plan from their drageon ships home to Sophie. He met the Red Indians and wrote about the old culture technics developed in the far east. The next letter arrives from greece, explaining the origin of alympiad and the myths. Before travelling home he joined our anchestors in stony times to report their simple life style. My little son especially loved reading about the knights and the vikings. He shared Sophies fear for Felix and her happiness when he retured home, finally. This book is wunderfully written and beaturfully painted. It inspired us to talk and learn about history!

Dog Speak is a must read for anyone who has a dog or loves dogs. This book is animated with the words that lead to solutions for every behavior problem imaginable. It is easy to read that will turn you into the "adoring master" your pet yearns for. Why? Because it teaches you how to interpret your dog's feelings, by understanding his or her verbal and non-verbal cues. Once you understand the pattern you can establish the rules of behaviors that are acceptable and those which are not. I would classify this book as the "bible of behavior" when it comes to communicating with "our four legged best friend". It certainly holds a prominent place on my book shelf

When all else failed this book helped my family embrace our wonderful puppy and grow together as a pack. We now understand our dog better and can communicate more clearly with him. Bash's techniques are easy to implement, require no physical discipline and are the optimal solution for making your dog a better citizen both in your home and in public. Understanding the way dogs think, implementing these simple training techniques, and plenty of love is all a person needs to raise a wonderful dog. In Building a Bigger Europe: EU and NATO Enlargement in Comparative Perspective, Martin A. Smith and Graham Timmins adopt a refreshingly neutral (not pro-American) tone. Both authors teach at British institutions--Smith at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, and Timmins at the University of Huddersfield. They explain that the book developed from the realization that a gap exists in the comparative literature on the EU and NATO enlargement processes, which is surprising, given the number of countries that belong to both organizations. No single state, except perhaps Germany, has tried to forge policy or to try to link the EU and NATO policies, they explain (p. 21). Although both the EU and NATO are under the rubric of European Studies, few scholars have an equal depth of knowledge about both the EU and NATO" (pg. viii).
The authors stress the need for a broader definition of security than the one that prevailed during the Cold War bipolar military division of Europe. Military security alone will not suffice. Citing Barry Buzan's five-dimensional definition (military, political, economic, societal, and environmental), they stress that more diffuse security challenges will emerge in the twenty-first century, within which economic issues will play a more vital role (p. 14). In 1989 the Cold War security order was suddenly transformed. It altered the structure of the European state system, intensified the relationship between military and economic security and possibly inverted their relative importance, they explain. Overcoming the continuing division of Europe and assuring the future stability of the European security order are contingent, they claim, upon the successful transition of the central and eastern European states to the market economy and multi-party democracy (p. 11).
Some aspects of the formal democratization process can be externally supported and directed, such as the constitution, party-system, elections, and marketization. However, establishing a civil society as a whole is a different story. The authors claim that the creation of a "public participatory and supportive political culture depends upon the political legitimacy that Central and Eastern European electorates afford to the post-communist regimes." (p. 5). Smith and Timmins aver that the EU can foster political legitimacy and economic stability-i.e. "comprehensive security"---better than NATO can. They believe that a security community in Western Europe was developed within the common military structure of NATO, but "is politically and societally distinct from it" (p. 16). It is much easier to earn membership in NATO than in the EU, since the former insists only upon civilian control of the military. According to the authors, NATO does not actually restrict its membership to countries with democratic regimes; member countries such as Portugal and Turkey both had dictatorial regimes, for example.
From the EU's perspective, the end of the Cold War represented a great opportunity to continue the process of trading and building pan-European unity as envisaged by its founding fathers in the 1940s and 1950s (p. 1). NATO, on the other hand, was established in 1949 out of European division. Western states viewed it as a necessary means of resisting the Soviet military threat. Unlike the EU, NATO was compelled to justify its continued existence after the collapse of the USSR amidst expectations of a "New World Order" and the anticipated peace dividend it would yield (p. 1).
Efforts after the Cold War to broaden NATO's functions beyond the military arena have met with no significant success, according to the authors. They write:
Since the deployment of NATO-led international forces to police and supervise the implementation of the Dayton peace accords in Bosnia at the beginning of 1996, and the deployment of a similar force to Kosovo in June 1999, it has become clear that NATO's future utility lies mainly in a revised, but still essentially military, role of deploying and commanding peace enforcement operations in conjunction with the UN in Europe, and perhaps elsewhere (p. 16).

Hence, as a fundamentally military-based institution, NATO cannot address the full range of security needs, either of its existing members or of prospective new ones, the authors claim. NATO thus falls shy as the sole institutional foundation of a European security community (p. 15).
Smith and Timmins adopt the controversial view that both NATO and the EU need to expand to the east if a wider European security community can be developed (p. 14). That is, a pan-European security order will be based on both NATO's "hard security" or military role, and the EU's "soft security" or economic and diplomatic roles (pp. 11, 14). Neither of these two institutions, however, can provide the other two types of security Buzan listed, societal or environmental security.
The authors ominously warn of a so-called "expectations gap" among the electorates of the CEE states. Just as in 1989 the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe collapsed because the command economic system imploded and the political elites failed to satisfy the material aspirations of the masses, so also in the early 21st century, the masses could become disillusioned if their countries are not admitted into the EU and/or NATO soon enough, or if membership in either of these institutions does not benefit the given country as much as previously imagined. According to Smith and Timmins, "The danger is that an expectations gap will develop that cannot be satisfied by pro-western post-communist political elites and that disenchantment will foster the creation of less amenable and undemocratic political systems (pp. 5-6)." ---Johanna Granville, Ph.D.

I use these fonts all the time!!! Not only for posters in the classroom and newsletters home, but I also use the Modern Print with lines to help my younger students practice their printing!!! The only drawback is the price - there should either be more fonts on the disk or a lower price :)

Forthright...gripping...delightful. Reading this book-length interview with Victor Dreke is like sitting down for a chat with a favourite uncle and being totally mesmerized by the story of his life -- which is part of yours, too. Completely uncomplicatedly, he tells of young rebels going on missions with guns that jammed at the crucial moment never-to-be-forgotten lesson on the discipline of weapons-cleaning!); being in Africa with Che Guevara (the beginning of a chain of events that eventually led to Namibian independence and the release of Nelson Mandela); and being an Afro-Cuban at the very beginning of the revolution (he was sent to a town where the rope separating Blacks from whites at Saturday night dances had only been taken down days before -- by a white Rebel Army officer). He describes the thrill in 1953 of hearing that Fidel Castro had stormed the Moncada Barracks. The action went down to military defeat -- but it was a sign that there were people who would never waver, and Dreke responded. Gives you total confidence that human beings can learn how to fight and win. Also paints a convincing picture of why Cuba is part of Africa.

Aunque aquí en el mundo regido por el capital nos alimentan con cuentos del corte "de mendigo a príncipe", hay más provecho en una historia verdadero de una persona verdadera que nació negro -segregado y negado lo mas básico de la civilización- que ha llegado a ser dirigente de revoluciones en dos continentes.

Trazando su vida en este volumen vemos muchos capítulos de la revolución pocos conocidos fuera de Cuba. De Dreke aprendemos la resistencia a las violentas contrarrevoluciones en Cuba mismo y en muchos países de África central.

Otro título más de los libros de Pathfinder donde dirigentes de la revolución cubana hablan de sus experiencias, dando detalles importantes sobre la historia de la revolución y ofreciendo a nuevas generaciones de trabajadores y jóvenes el ejemplo de cómo luchar contra la opresión y explotación y a favor de la humanidad.

Dreke cuenta sus experiencias en la lucha contra la dictadura de batista, los cambios revolucionarios en los primeros años de la revolución, y la lucha contra las bandas contrarrevolucionarias organizadas por el gobierno norteamericano. Dreke es afrocubano y nos ofrece lecciones importantes en la lucha en contra el racismo. De gran interés es su análisis de la misión internacionalista de los cubanos que lucharon junto con fuerzas anticolonial en el Congo in 1965. Dreke era dirigente al lado de Che Guevara de esta misión. También son de gran valor sus observaciones sobre cuestiones de liderazgo, de cómo forjar un movimiento revolucionario y desarrollar los hombres y mujeres de una nueva sociedad en el curso de la lucha.
