You know, this book seemed to have lots of promise, but from the B&B's we chose to stay at on our trip to Italy, the dreamyness was not always quite as nice as indicated in the book.
Overall, I rate it a 4 for exploring a different perspective to italy and suggesting routes and trips as well as offering a fun travel perspective.

Someone I met at a business meeting recommended this book to me. We booked 2 out of our 4 hotels out of Karen Brown's books and they were great! We booked a low cost place which was small, but cute, super clean and the staff were fabulous and we booked a 4 star place which was just unbelievable (Castelletto di Montebenichi). We were not nearly as pleased with the two places we booked through another source so we will use Karen Brown for all hotels next time!

We loved this book! My kids begged me NOT to finish our read-aloud time! We were glued to this book and ended up reading it a lot quicker than expected. It is graphic and true to life...read to young ones with caution!
Realistic to an extreme........2006-01-04
I am the daughter of a Vietnam veteran and my entire life I have grown up hearing stories of how dreadful it was to be there and how scary it was to be in a foreign land. Quang Huynh gave me a new perspective on this foreign land and made me see it as a very unique place with his relationships with his animals, family, and insight into his culture. This book was terribly sad, and at times it is a bit too real for one to handle. It is very well written and the stories are captivating. I reccomend everyone read it for a rare insight on Vietnam before the war.

This Adventure story is full of dangerous fun and sorrow. Huynh Quang Nhuong lives in a small hamlet (village)in the central high lands of vietnam. The hamlet he lives in has a jungle on one side in which they must watch for jungle cats, lone hogs and the most dangerous the horse snake. And on the other is a river which Crocodiles live in. Many of the crocodiles are man eaters like mister short. In the begin of the story you meet Tank the Water bufflo. Tank isn't your regular water bufflo. He is bred between a lowland female because it would be patient and A moutainous bull so it would have the fierce fighting able.
The reason I choose this book was because love the outdoors. when I six years old I live in a village in Alaska and I hunted and fished all the time.

The book I read is about the author's life. The author tells us about his experience with animals he met. The setting is a village where the author has lived. Anyway there is very important animal called Tank. Tank is a friend of the author but it's not human it's a cow.
There are some dangerous animals, too. The author describes his adventures and his story very nicely to make people know what's going on in the book. My opinion about this book is great. I liked his adventure, the other stories from his friend, etc. if you are interested in animals then you should read this before any other books.

This book and its authors have produced a book that lacks good research and provides little insight into the breed's shortcomings. As another reviewer has noted, it even lacks an index. To call this the best book on Mastiffs is a disgrace to the noble breed. I have found at least two others at Amazon that are clearly superior and another I own, that is out-of-print, unfortunately, would leave this book in the kennel. Even the quality of the photographs is poor.
Dated material lacking current relevance........1998-06-26
This book has some nice photos and drawings that may help you learn about the breed, but it lacks updating and warnings about such terrible things as blindness and possible characters faults. It needs an index and sections added on such elements as rescue dog organizations and other important contacts.
Lots of photos of nice dogs, but so what? Why are they champions. Captions are lacking relevant data. For example, world's money making champion dog--not one photo from the movie or why the owner was paid so much.
An excellent book on the Mastiff breed.......1998-03-06
If you only read one book on the Mastiff, this should be the one. A wonderful presentation of the history, nature & information on owning & raising a Mastiff, from the foremost authority in Mastiffs in the world today.

I suspect this is the book available in a pet store; ninety per cent of it could be written for almost any breed of dog. Didn't read carefully, and guess you could say I got superficially skunked. I wouldn't reccommend this book to my dog for chewing, even.

Good but a lot of the information was too basic for me. Most of this information is available through good reputable breeders. In fact, some information that my breeder prefers is contradictory to this book.
I guess this is a good book for those who don't have a good breeder or mentor.
If you are looking for a serious book that is extremely popular with the top breeders in the country ... buy the DeeDee Anderson book. This is a true mastiff owners book. Admittedly, it may be too detailed and for those looking for fluff.

This is a wonderfully realized book on a most deserving subject. The gardens of Le Notre, at Versailles, are the most spectaular in the world and the apex of French classical garden design, Louis XIV was heavily envoled in their creation, and the Sun King took most of the credit, but it was mostly the great Le Notre. This book has some spectacular images and the palace and grounds are just breathtaking, it really is hard to wrap your mind around this much splendor. If you have any interest at all amazing landscape architecture or just appreciate opulance then you will love this book. Thank goodness the palace was not pulled down during the Revolution, it was said because it was so vast it would be too much work to destroy so they let it languish in glorious decay, to this day France is trying to restore it to its apex during the ancient regime, this book lets us in on some of that opulance reflected in the splendid gardens. Highly recommended.
