Crawdad is a groundbreaking neurophysiology laboratory guide on CD-ROM. More than just a traditional lab manual on disk, Crawdad engages the student with sight and sound, teaching through video demonstration.

The exercises are both inexpensive and straightforward for students, and have been successfully used and refined for over 15 years at Cornell and other institutions. They use simple invertebrate preparations (primarily crayfish, but also snails and an alga), rather than classical vertebrate preparations (such as frogs, turtles, and rats) to illustrate fundamental processes of all nervous systems. The crayfish neuromuscular junction, for instance, is an excellent model for human central nervous system synapses. The use of invertebrates alleviates to some extent the problem of obtaining animal care protocols. Moreover, crayfish are "farmed" in aquaculture, thus attenuating the ecological impact issues that arise from using frogs. Rather than simply guiding students through an understanding of important neurobiology concepts, each lab also allows discovery-based learning through additional student-designed experiments.

Crawdad features a self-contained interface (no internet browser, etc., required), hypertext links, and optional video subtitles and voice-overs. The Student CD-ROM contains instructions and videos for each lab; questions; suggestions for further exploration; tips for dissecting (e.g., lighting, posture, and correct use of tools) and recording (e.g., noise reduction, electrode handling, and troubleshooting); and calculators for all equations used. An accompanying printed manual includes all of the CD-ROM's text and figures.

This CDROM lab manual includes audiovisual demonstrations of all of the experiments, which makes it very clear how to do each exercise. It includes detailed instructions, shows you how to make electrodes, saline and membrane potential calculators, and educational videos and animations.

All of the experiments use invertebrates, which are easier to work with, and avoid problems some have with using vertebrates. Most experiments use crayfish, but they also include snail and plant recording techniques. (...) They even include plans for inexpensive home-made amplifiers.

I have used this lab manual in my neurobiology course for 3 years and it is an excellent resource. One could also use it as a "dry lab" to show students how experiments are done. (...)

The two editions offered by Amazon include the more expensive intructor's version, which includes the less expensive student's version. The instructor's version contains more details about how to set up the exercises, and also the answers to the end of lab questions.

Good enough for a short trip.......2007-05-14

I bought this book for a 4 day trip to Grand Cayman - so I've actually not used the sections for Little Cayman and Cayman Brac - but found it concise and accurate enough to make the most of my four days. It was a suprise to go to the turtle farm and find a bar and a diveshop instead - but they had just relocated across the street due to hurricane damage they suffered. Overall, this is one of the many Insight Guides i own and they're generally pretty good; I would recommend this book for short/easy trips.

...from this charming and educational book. I purchased Paris 1789 from the Louvre Museum Shop during my visit to Paris. Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution have long been my passion. I thought this book may explain my passion to my children. I determined to read the book to them as soon as I came home but...I was sitting on the Metro when I decided to flip through the book. I read the entire book from cover to cover (and missed my stop). Although this book is designed and written for children, its engaging layout and fascinating tidbits make it enjoyable and educational for adults. I love that it is presented as a real travel guide. The travel tips, at the top of the pages, are hilarious! "Look for plays by Moliere - one of France's best comic playwrights" and "Hold on to your purse. Pickpockets often work in the crowded streets." Some things never change!

Completely agrees with my philosophy of working with dogs!!!.......2002-06-11

This book represents everything I truly believe one should and should not do regarding dog training/communication. I haven't found a book like it in all of the research and reading I've done on the topic. Also of great benefit is the fact that they don't heavily recommend feeding kibble (this is just briefly mentioned in the book), which I advocate strongly. This clear-cut, easy format book is enjoyable and extremely educational without faddish training methods or too soft or too hard viewpoints on the treatment of dogs. I highly recommend it to everyone considering or interested in learning about how dogs think!

FOR SCIENTISTS, GARDENERS, ARTISTS, AND CHILDREN.......2007-02-28

This is great for botanist and gardeners. I am a botanist and will say that these pictures are worth a thousand and one words. It is faster to look though this book than search the web, when you are trying to remember a flower because the images are so clear and vivid. They are arranged by scientific families and there is a glossary of common and scientific names.

The book is VERY heavy and the pages are glossy (got for free super saver shipping!). It is necessary that this book be hardback, because it will be used. I have artist friends that have borrowed it to sketch from. Friends have looked though it to get ideas for planting flowers and researching native blooms. I wish I had had this book as a child, because I loved plants then too!

Be sure to get the set(book on shrubs too). If you buy the set, instead of one at a time, the books come in a box. I purchased my set in the box while working at the New York Botanical. This box helps protect the spines and hold these huge books upright.

A little awkward to navigate, I would prefer Botanical alphabetical order...you definitely will be going to the index a lot. I would also like to see more specific information on the plant's preferred environment and zones. Excellent illustrations; great for plant I.D.

The Ultimate Botanical Reference........2002-09-20

I have seen an early copy of this book through a friend, and I can honestly say it is the best botanical reference book that i have ever seen.

The Pictures are brillient, with the plants seeming to come alive from the page. The authors- Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix are two of the most respected authors and have a welth of experience that they are egar to share with you.

My Advice- PreOrder this book before the Christmas Season rust to advoide dissapointment.

Author Doris Marshall-Slack grew up in rural Tennessee and with Perseverance Lane: A Teacher's Story, she deftly provides the reader with a superbly crafted historical autobiography of her personal experiences growing up during the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras. Doris Marshall-Slack became a teacher against all odds: her first-person story is revealing, engaging, and a very highly recommended memoir, especially for students of Black Studies and Women's Studies.

Overcoming Obstacles.......2004-10-09

In her book PERSEVERANCE LANE, author Doris L. Marshall-Slack tells the story of her life and all of the obstacles she overcame to become a successful educator. Born in a rural poverty-stricken area of Tennessee, the author shares both her experiences growing up in the Jim Crow era, and the experiences that she endured growing up in a broken home.

She later tells of the difficulties she had to conquer being involved in an abusive marriage and raising six children while first earning her high school diploma, later going to college, and eventually earning her Master's degree. The book is also a tribute to her mother, sisters, and other family members who helped her achieve success.

PERSEVERANCE LANE shows one woman's strength to go against the odds and become successful. Though her life was filled with pain, sorrow, and struggles, the author still held on to her faith in God, and was able to persevere. PERSEVERANCE LANE is a true testimony to what one can accomplish through faith and hard work.

One Woman's Struggle-Every woman's Struggle .......2004-08-02

Living in the rural South presented many physical and emotional conflicts for the author. However, Marshal-Slack tells the story in such a way that readers feel as if they're in the next room,watching the story unfold. If readers cannot relate to the physical problems that African Americans experienced in the rural South, they certainly can relate to the emotional abuse the author suffered.
I recommend this book for people of all races and nationalities, for how many women of all races and nationalities have experienced verbal/physical at the hands of fathers and husbands? Until this nightmare is eliminated from society, freedom has completely escaped us.
I commend Marshall-Slack who so eloquently sent the message that through faith in God and determination, nothing is impossible.

Growing up black in the old south.......2004-07-15

The main problem I had with this book was that the author does not make it clear what her purpose was in writing the book. Was it intended to be an autobiographical account of her life? Was it intended to be a motivational piece for young people? Was it intended to be a historical account of social change? Black youth might find it motivational while most white youth would have a hard time relating to it. There are many other motivational and autobiographical books better suited for encouragement.

On the other hand this would be an excellent book for studying social change and the social environment over the past several decades in the black community. Author Doris Marshall-Slack provides all the required details to get a complete depiction of growing up in the rural United States as a black person. It follows the true story of the author as she rises from poverty in the days before the Civil Rights Movement, through a broken home and dysfunctional marriage and eventually to a master's degree. This was all done while still trying to be a wife and mother.

This well-written and articulate book provides an even-handed and personal look into the life of the author. It is an excellent study of the social-economic period and the struggles of black females over the past several decades. A moving story, "Perseverance Lane" is recommended for general reading and anyone studying this period for social sciences, history, or black history.
