Description:
To assess the effects of clearcutting on snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) relative abundance, we surveyed pellets in 1m^2 circular plots and, vegetation and browse surveys in 4.5m^2 circular plots among four different aged clearcut (30, 20, 10, 5 years post-harvest) and mature forests (>150 years old) in central Labrador, Canada. Data were modelled at three grain sizes: transect (4400m^2), plot (314m^2) and subplot scales (4.5m^2). Betula papyrifera, distance from mature forest edge, tree and herb cover as well as remotely sensed forest inventory data were used as predictors for hare pellets. We found pellet abundance was 5 and 37 times greater (new and old pellets, respectively) in clearcut stands 30 years old than the next highest in 20 year old cuts. There were few hare pellets in the remaining stand ages. B. papyrifera was the most proportionately used browse species and most important of our fine-detailed vegetation in predicting hare pellets. The coarse-detailed, forest inventory and topographic data better predicted hare pellets than the fine-detailed vegetation data.

Description:
In the present work, we derive a habitat suitability model of the broom hare and the Pyrenean grey partridge in the Cantabrian Mountains by using the Ecological Niche Factor Analysis. Both species are endemic to the northern of Iberian mountains, and because of the vulnerability of the hare to endangerment or extinction and because of the great interest in the partridge, this habitat requires specific conservation measures. Literature on these animals' biology and ecology is practically nonexistent. Habitat suitability analyses show that the hare and partridge occupy very similar ecological niches, characterized by a high percentage of broom and heather scrublands, high altitude and slope, and limited human accessibility. We have identified differences in habitat selection between the Pyrenean grey partridge and other subspecies of partridge present in central-northern Europe. Our results indicate a probable metapopulation structure for both the hare and partridge; however, according to our predictive maps, there is a high connectivity between suitable habitats. Current decline of traditional rural activities, such as mountain livestock, are affecting the mosaic landscape. This, in turn, enhances biodiversity in the area and, particularly, the viability of these valuable animal populations.

Description:
Accumulation of cadmium, mercury, lead, copper and zinc was studied in muscle, liver and kidney of 9 adult and 7 juvenile arctic hares (Lepus arcticus), collected in 2003 in the southwestern part of Nunavut, Canada. Our objective was to determine the level of heavy metal accumulation, and distribution among age groups and tissue. Concentrations of all metals varied among tissues, and concentrations of Cd, Hg and Zn were higher in adults compared to juveniles. We found correlations in metal content among tissues, and among metals in kidneys. We also found the hares to have low concentration of most heavy metals except cadmium. We suggest that the high cadmium levels might be caused by the local geology, and the hares being adapted to these levels. The low levels of the other metals are probably due to low input of atmospheric contaminants. Only one of the individuals had Cd content slightly above the maximum contaminant levels recommended for human consumption of meat. There were no levels in meat above the recommended maximum for the rest of the metals surveyed. However the Cd levels in liver and kidney are orders of magnitude higher than the recommended maximum, and consumption of these organs should be avoided.

Customer Reviews:
the best guide to Jordan.......2005-01-15
For a recent trip to Jordan I bought all the guidebooks I could find in bookstores, and this one is, by far, the best. Not only does it provide all the necessary, utilitarian information, but it provides great background reading on the history and culture of the country. Much better than the other available books, especially the Lonely Planet.
There was very little we saw that wasn't extensively and well covered. The author has clearly spent a great deal of time living and travelling through Jordan.
The recommendations for Amman and the most notorious tourist destinations (Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea, Jerash) are uniformly accurate, clear, and useful, but the book also offers plenty of information about less obvious destinations - e.g. small towns along the main roads, always suggesting a good place to stop and have a snack and giving interesting historical details.
This is not only a practical and useful guidebook, but also an essential reference on Jordan for those willing to read or explore more. Very highly recommended.
Excellent!!.......2003-03-03
This is more my style of guide book!! Excellent background information on archeological sites around Jordan with (considering it's a guide book) great info on Petra! Everything from the King's Highway to Wadi Rum is covered in thoughtful detail by an author who obviously did his homework. This book really sparks your interest in going to Jordan, and introduces the Bedouin and mainstream Jordanian culture to the reader well. Border crossings, visas, food, health, transportation... it's all in here. LP and Let's Go guides should learn a thing or two from this guide! It doesn't bog itself down with useless information like some other guide books do. Going to Jordan? Get this first!
A Detailed And Accurate Guide - Excellent.......2000-04-03
A detailed and accurate guide to all the main sites in Jordan. The informaton included is up to date and extensive, including chapters on travel, where to eat & stay, health, history, backgrounds on Islam, shopping & the media, along with much advice on local behaviour and attitudes.
Whilst in Jordan, I found this guide to be an invaluable tool to getting around and learning about local history and culture.
The attention to specific detail is extremely accurate and up to date.
A must for any first time traveller to this historic and beautiful country.

Readers experience a new look at this seminal historical event through the eyes of those who now regularly inhabit the world of the pilgrimsthe actors who interpret the Pilgrim Voyage. This eye-opening book teaches children the value of closely reexamining everything we think we know.
Customer Reviews:
Enthusiastically recommended and enthralling.......2003-09-12
The collaborative effort of the Plimoth Plantation, authors Peter Arenstam, John Kemp, and Catherine O'Neill Grace, and photographers Sisse Brimberg and Cotton Coulson, Mayflower 1620: A New Look At A Pilgrim Voyage is a superb picture book retelling of history for young people, about the voyage of the Mayflower ship and the lives of the colonists who braved hardship for a new future. Gorgeous, full-color photographs capture reenactments of how life aboard the Mayflower was like, and the down-to-earth text presents the events of history in detail. An enthusiastically recommended and enthralling educational read, Mayflower 1620 is ideal for young readers seeking to broaden and improve their knowledge of American colonial history as well as their basic reading skills.

A decent second book.......2006-02-03
First I'm concerned with the author's statement of not spaying a female until after the first cycle due to the her contention that the female pup will forever be an adolescent. All other information and studies state that the most signifigant health benefits are gained by having female dogs spayed before the first heat cycle. Is the "forever adolescent" an "old wives tale" or held as true by most experts on the AWS? The book doesn't say.
The rest of the book is worth while as a "coffee table" piece with the best photography seen and decent chapters on the AWS.
A better read of the differences and training of sporting (flushing) spaniels is "Hup! Training Flushing Spaniels The American Way by James Spencer"
Mainly a picture book.......2000-01-29
There is very little written about this breed (and most of it is out of print). There is a nice summary of the breed history and rather general advice about raising and training your dog. The subjects covered are a good introduction to training but would need to be supplemented from other sources. The illustrations are outstandingly good and give an excellent view of the wideranging abilities of this "great All American dog". It is an excellent book for the person who wants an American water spaniel as a pet or who wants to know what the breed looks like. I could not wholeheartedly recommend it for a person who wants a hunting dog. As far as field ability and training of an American water spaniel are concerned, I would suggest James Spencer's book Training the Flushing Spaniel the American Way which contains a most informative chapter about the special characteristics of this breed and excellent advice on field training.
Little that is specific to the American Water Spaniel.......1999-06-21
We found this book much too generic for anyone seriously considering the advantages/disadvantages of this breed compared to another hunting breed of dog. The pictures provided a clear look at the dog's appearance, but most of the text (training, care etc.) could have been written about almost any dog.
Great pictures, some simple advice........1998-11-22
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in the AWS. Although it only briefly skims advanced training or care information, it has a wide number of examples of the breed represented in it's numerous pictures. I highly recommend this book and I only gave it less then five stars because of the last chapter of the book which is an advertisment for dog dental toys.
Great pictures - Good Overall Presentation of the AWS.......1998-02-07
The pictures are fabulous, up-to-date & high quality. It is worth buying the book for the pictures alone. This updated story of the American Water Spaniel is evenly presented and takes a look at all aspects of this wonderful breed.

This is the leading book on cigarette lighter collecting. There are nearly 1000 lighters illustrated in color. The variety is incredible. From Zippo to Dunhill and so many more. There is even a value guide to give you an idea of value. This is the authors third book on lighters and they really went all out to make this the best book ever.
