            Book Description

Paradise in Ashes is a deeply engaged and moving account of the violence and repression that defined the murderous Guatemalan civil war of the 1980s. In this compelling book, Beatriz Manz--an anthropologist who spent over two decades studying the Mayan highlands and remote rain forests of Guatemala--tells the story of the village of Santa María Tzejá, near the border with Mexico. Manz writes eloquently about Guatemala's tortured history and shows how the story of this village--its birth, destruction, and rebirth--embodies the forces and conflicts that define the country today.
Drawing on interviews with peasants, community leaders, guerrillas, and paramilitary forces, Manz creates a richly detailed political portrait of Santa María Tzejá, where highland Maya peasants seeking land settled in the 1970s. Manz describes these villagers' plight as their isolated, lush, but deceptive paradise became one of the centers of the war convulsing the entire country. After their village was viciously sacked in 1982, desperate survivors fled into the surrounding rain forest and eventually to Mexico, and some even further, to the United States, while others stayed behind and fell into the military's hands. With great insight and compassion, Manz follows their flight and eventual return to Santa María Tzejá, where they sought to rebuild their village and their lives.

I bought this to accompany me on a trip to Guatemala. Although it was painful to read, it absorbed me in the country's history in a very enriching way, and altered my perspective considerably. I highly, highly recommend this book.

            Book Description

"Benz brings the reader face to face with the landscape, the people, and the institutions of Guatemala. I am convinced that his book will appeal to a general audience, to students entering the field of Latin American studies, and even to people planning a trip to that country. His insights into and observations of Guatemalan society are invariably accurate and engaging."

—Pablo Medina, author of Exiled Memories: A Cuban Childhood

Guatemala draws some half million tourists each year, whose brief visits to the ruins of ancient Maya cities and contemporary highland Maya villages may give them only a partial and folkloric understanding of Guatemalan society. In this vividly written travel narrative, Stephen Connely Benz explores the Guatemala that casual travelers miss, using his encounters with ordinary Guatemalans at the mall, on the streets, at soccer games, and even at the funeral of massacre victims to illuminate the social reality of Guatemala today.

The book opens with an extended section on the capital, Guatemala City, and then moves out to the more remote parts of the country where the Guatemalan Indians predominate. Benz offers us a series of intelligent and sometimes humorous perspectives on Guatemala's political history and the role of the military, the country's environmental degradation, the influence of foreign missionaries, and especially the impact of the United States on Guatemala, from governmental programs to fast food franchises.

            5 out of 5 stars Guatemala Journey.......2005-07-28

An extremely insightful book into the life, culture and history of the people of Guatemala. As one who has travelled in Guatemala, it brought back very vivid memories. Easy reading, and wonderful insights into the culture.

5 out of 5 stars precise description of guatemala.......2003-09-23

After having the opportunity to live in Guatemala, and experience the culture, I read 'Guatemalan Journey'. I found it to be an accurate description of life in Guatemala.

It was well written and interesting. It was amazing how the author captured so many realities of daily life so precisely. He was able to 'bring words to life'.
If you would like to learn more about Guatemala, the complex culture, the wonderful people, the beautiful country, and the pain they have suffered, and still do in some respects, this is a must read.

            1 out of 5 stars Extremely Racist.......2003-09-18

One of the most racist books I have ever read. Page after page
the author unrelentingly displays his complete hatred and
disgust with anyone who is white or mestizo while he endlessly
praises the perfection of the indigenous population. If you
agree with this black and white view of the world you will enjoy
this book. If you feel the real world is even slightly more
complex, then you will find this book impossible to read.

5 out of 5 stars good taste of guatemala.......2003-08-15

a good taste of guatemala for gringos who plan to travel there

4 out of 5 stars Very good book about Guatemalan history and culture.......2002-06-10

For someone who was looking for a good starting point in learing about and understanding the history and culture of Guatemala, I found this book to be an excellent read. The author's journal about his travels throughout Guatemala gave this reader a good understanding of how Guatemala, despite its small size, holds several very distincitive cultures, customs and attitiudes. The book primarily focuses on the various cultures and treatment of indigenous Indian populations throughout Guatemala, which is important in understanding why things are the way they are in the country. There is little focus on middle-class life.

While the author sometimes lapses into extended periods of criticizing travelers who visit the country (even if it well deserved) I think the book does a very good job of opening the reader up to Guatemalan culture and provides several other reading ideas for those looking to dig deeper into the country.

For a combination of photos, natural history, and care notes on so many species of snakes, this book cannot be beat. I just bought my second copy, so that i can have one in mint.

Even though this book was published several years ago, the care info in it is solid. If you are halfway interested in snakes, this is a definate book for you.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, basic guide to a large number of species........2001-03-17

The book is intended to provide a basic overview of 400+ species of snake. Therefore, no time is wasted on introductions. The book is divided first into 3 categories: primitave snakes, Colubrids, and venomous snakes. These groups are further divided into family groups/regional groups. The author provides usually one (often more) color photograph to accompany the description of each individual species. Information is provided on habitat, geographic range, natural history, size, care, and reproduction for each species. With a few exceptions, the phototography is excellent. The overviews are brief, but the author provides information & photos of more species that I have found in any single book. The book is excellent for readers interested in venomous snakes. Over 1/3 of the book is dedicated to hard-to-find information/photos on sea snakes, elapids, viperids, and crotalids. The book contains a brief section on snake venom. The biggest weakness of the book is probably it's age (1987), but it is still well worth the investment. While the information on each snake is brief, I have not found a book containing species-specific information on as many species as the Mehertens book. To receive equivalent information, you would need to purchase multiple regional guides. A great guide for professionals and amateur snake lovers!

5 out of 5 stars Great starting point for herpetoculturists.......1999-08-16

I have had this book for a while now and still refer to it when I have questions about food and habitat for certain species. I am still for a book that talks about all species of snakes whether they are common in captivity or almost(in some cases thought to be) extinct. The book covered the material it was designed for and was all in all a very good book.

4 out of 5 stars A useful overview, though not comprehensive........1998-02-08

This book attempts to provide expansive coverage of snakes commonly seen by the public in zoos, private collections, and the pet trade. Ultimately, I was a bit disappointed by the book.

This book provides minimal, and I do mean minimal, coverage of "164 genera, 413 species, and 454 subspecies" according to the dust jacket. Of necessity, the amount of coverage devoted to each snake is limited. Still there's enough text to provide an overview of the species. Unfortunately, the book fails to mention many of the species that are currently available as reptile pets. More than half of the book is devoted to poisonous snakes, most of which the average reader is unlikely ever to encounter. I would have traded, say, the 15 pages of coverage on poisonous sea snakes for more discussion of snakes I'd be likely to see in my backyard or neighborhood pet store. Additionally, because the book is now over 10 years old, its taxonomy for a number of species is not longer correct or complete.

One of the big distinctions of this book is that it provides color photographs of all the species it describes. In most cases, the photographs range from good to excellent. This makes the blurry and out-of-focus pictures (e.g. Dumeril's boa on pp. 23 and blood python on pp. 59) stick out like a sore thumb. Some of these problems may be related to the printing of my copy, but in a number of cases the problems are a result of poor photographic technique. Especially frustrating when the species being photographed is commonly available! Still, these flaws are forgivable when compared against the general quality of the book.

"Living Snakes of the World in Color" succeeds at providing a pictorial introduction to hundreds of species of snake. Those uninterested in poisonous snakes, or those looking for comprehensive coverage of snakes available as "pets" might be better off with another book (although I have yet to find a reasonably priced book that fits the bill).

                        5 out of 5 stars A milestone in it's area........1997-01-28

Excellent color pictures mixed with a well-written and professional text. All to all a balanced book. Novice or expert, you will enjoy many hours of good reading. (an extra plus for the "care" section of each animal, useful and often hard to come by.)

If you collect team baseballs, this is the reference book you will want to own. However be aware it only covers up to 1991. It is a great source of who the key players by year and team. It also lists all-star teams and key players. It does, however need to be updated to reflect current values, players and teams after 1991.

This kit sells for $30 if you buy it brand new at a store. It's not worth it at that price. I got mine for about $7 at an auction, and I'm happy with the expense.

Previous reviews are right: the box has a cardboard base and the sand, because it's so fine, would leak out of it. What I did before I used it was run glue all along the inner and outer edges of the box to seal the gaps. It doesn't leak anymore :-).

3 out of 5 stars Sad Little Garden.......2001-05-25

I got this as a gift for Christmas, and I was really excited because I love Zen gardens, but garden provided is so poor and sad. The little garden has a stapled on cardboard bottom that the sand leaks out of, and the rake was falling apart. Yes I know that the Buddha is everywhere, and he does not need anything more than what was provided, but I had this at work. It stinks to keep having to clean up sand every morning.

The book was wonderful, and I keep it at work to read when things get stressful, but I'm going to go buy my own stuff to make a real, durable Zen Garden.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, mediocre garden kit!.......1999-08-15

If the Zen Gardening Book part of this book/kit combination makes it into your local library, check out a copy and bask in the meditations, creativity and musings of the author. The kit is uninspiring and actually degrades the lofty consciousness inspired by the book. Use your imagination, save the bucks, and create your own Zen garden using sand and rocks and wood that speak to you.

The text contains many hints and good suggestions to follow BUT many pictures there fail to explain the text ( too many suggestions can't be followed with pictures ) Reader will difficult to imagine and visualize the suggestion. It's very annoying because this book seems aimed for general use.

For me the best book I've read. A tremendously educational book on slavery, faith, endurance, love, spiritualness, patience, and the importance of family values.

I could not put the book down because of the excitement of looking ahead. You could almost feel yourself wanting to be their in real life and seeing first hand the events unfold.

The author clearly reveals to me his heartfelt feelings for his heritage, and his writing makes you want to be a part of that past. As I was finishing the final chapters I had to go and find the burial place of "Freejoe", and experience some of his past. What a great feeling it was walking in the cemetary at Gray's Creek Baptist Church.
