Customer Reviews:
Weird Texas.......2007-01-18
Weird Texas was a gift for my boyfriend in Texas. He loved it. He couldn't put it down. He actually knew of a few of the stories and said they were very acurate. If you are scared of ghosts, definately don't read the ghost section. I recommed all the Weird books they always make for a good adventure with your friends.
Fun, but needs more info.......2006-02-08
This was a fun read but sorely lacking in details. With the words "travel guide" on the cover, I expected to be able to find where these places were. At best, they gave us vague details or just a city name. This book was more ghost stories and Texas tales than travel guide.
Enjoyable.......2005-12-20
This book was fun to read. It won't be easy to find stories you haven't heard before about any places you have lived in TX. So if you moved around a few times be wary of some repeat information. We were also dismayed that there isn't more information on getting to some of these places. Small maps would have been helpful to anyone planning a roadtrip. Overall a good effort. I look forward to more Weird States!
Fun But Lacking.......2005-09-12
This was a fun read and had a lot of info in the Personalized Properties and Roadside Oddities chapters that was new to me.
The Local Legends and Ancient Mysteries sections were very thorough for what was covered but did not make an effort to cover a lot of other interesting forlklore or sites in Texas.
Portions of the Unexplained Phenomena and Bizarre Beasts are previously published verbatim by Rob Riggs in his book 'In the Big Thicket'. I was hoping he had contributed something new for these sections since I have already purchased his book, but was, however, disappointed. The Haunted Places section was sadly lacking. The places that were covered were entertaining, but some of Texas' well known haunted locations (for example: La Bahia Blanca)were totally overlooked and I can only assume poor research caused this absence.
Worth the price, but don't expect a whole lot if you have already researched the areas of knowledge covered in the book.
Weird Review.......2005-09-06
What an outstanding book. This was one of those "stay up all nighters"! It has absolutely GREAT graphics to go along with the multitude of funny and weird Texas stories. I'm proud to have this on my coffee table and my kids are going to get their copies for Christmas. I'm not sure what story I enjoyed most. Maybe it was the young couple leaving East Texas on Hwy 281 when they were approached in broad daylight by a high speed ball of light. Maybe it was the stories about the cannibal Karankawa Indians living in the Texas swamps. Maybe it was all the bats in Austin. Maybe it was the Bigfoot critters in the Sour Lake oil swamps. Maybe it was all the different Billy the Kids. Maybe it was all the other great stories. Whatever, ENJOY!
Book Description
Red Wassenich, who coined of the phrase "Keep Austin Weird," is tour guide to the weirder side of Austin, Texas, through this endlessly entertaining text and over 180 color photos of colorful places, people, and doings in the state's capital city. Tour the Cathedral of Junk, a three-story, sixty-ton behemoth made with hubcaps, TVs, and over 700 bicycles. Meet Leslie, the cross-dressing, semi-homeless perennial mayoral candidate. Party at the Spamarama, Austin's premier weird cook-off, known for its Spam-filled dishes from "gourmet" and "insane" recipes. Keep your eyes peeled for cruising art cars or take a Segway tour of downtown. Shop in South 1st Street's weird businesses, including Roadhouse Relics and Unemployed Democrats. Sports fans must see Austin's Roller Derby, starring the Texas Rollergirls, and bowl at the Dart Bowl, where bowling kitsch is king. For the adventurous, there is no better guide to Austin!
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2007-10-18
I've been researching Austin for the past few months, and I can't believe it took me this long to come across this book. Not only is it a fabulous guide, it's hilariously written. Kudos to Mr. Wassenich.
An essential guide........2007-04-24
If you're new to Austin, thinking about visiting, or even if you've lived there for a while and are interested in what all the "Keep Austin Weird" fuss is about, this is an essential guide, and a lavishly illustrated one. If you're looking for a synopsis and photographs about the weird/unique things of Austin- you'll find it here- from the Annual Spamarama to eccentric political candidates to the Texas Chili Parlor to Satan's Cheerleaders. To my knowledge, this is the only book on Austin of its kind, and so is an essential resource for those who are thinking about visiting the city or native Austinites who want to learn more about it.

Boy Howdy.......2007-08-23
Growing up in California, I became a Texan as soon as I knew better. Having missed all of the Texas history and trivia growing up, it was pure delight to read "The Bathroom Book of Texas Trivia". It's a gem for those with little nuggets of time to snatch a quick read. From the snippet about the "Pulpwood Queens of East Texas" to discovering how the Lone Star became Texas' state seal to "The Games People Play", it's a fun and informative read.
A "Must Have" guide to some of the key little things that when summed yield the mystique of a BIG state.......2007-08-12
Often hilarious, intriguing, or just plain interesting fun quick facts about the Lone Star state. If you know someone who plans to visit or move to Texas (or recently arrived), this will orient them. It will also delight Texas natives and Texas ex-patriates who get homesick. Highly recommended.
Funny & Informative Read .......2007-07-20
I found the "Bathroom Book of Texas Trivia" a very enjoyable read. As a native Illinoisan I learned much about my adopted state of Texas. If you are a fan of trivia, or just want to learn more about the Lone Star State, you will enjoy reading this book.

Looking for Excellent Hmong Literature?.......2000-05-18
If you are an elememtary or middle scool teacher with a population of Hmong children, or if you are looking for literature that treats a "difficult" subject in a sensitive way this book is for you. It is beautifully illustrated, with pictures of a Hmong story cloth and the story is written by a Hmong woman. It is one of those picture books that makes wonderful reading and viewing for adults as well as children. Top notch!
a powerful book, beautifully illustrated and well-written.......2000-05-16
This is one of my favorite children's books. It tells the story of the Hmong people through the eyes of a child who lived in Laos during the Vietnam War, lost her father, escaped to Thailand and eventually came to America as a refugee. One of my third grade Hmong students declared it "THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ! " I would have to agree.

Product Description
Dia Cha's story is shared by many Hmong Americans who made a long journey to freedom. The story cloth stiched by her aunt and uncle describes the Hmong people's long and dangerous journey. For Hmong people, story cloths are a bridge between past and present. For all Americans, Dia's Story Cloth is a universal story of the search for freedom. This bilingual edition is part of the Hmong Translation Initiative coordinated by Motheread.Fatheread MN, a curriculum-based family literacy program of the Minnesota Humanities Commission (MHC). The purpose of this project is to help Hmong families develop literacy skills in their first language as well as in English. Because of the Moob Ntsuab (Green Mong) and Hmoob Dawb (White Hmong) dialects are different, the translation committee has translated the English text into both. The Hmong text is featured next to the English, and the books original artwork is maintained.

Book Description
The work of Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) consists of mystical highlights, moments of stylistic beauty and traditional exegetical discourse. In contrast to previous studies this book does not limit itself to the historical and devotional side of Bernard, but brings to the fore his stylistic originality. Bernard emerges as a flexible thinker, a great dramatist and an adroit master of language who combines the fixed pattern of monastic life with the vicissitudes of extra-mural events. On the one hand, Bernard's writings are composed according to the rhythm of the uninterrupted ritual of prayer and singing inside the walls of the monastery. On the other hand, that ritual is interspersed with notions of love and death. The present study describes the literary devices through which Bernard shapes the monastic existence as a subtle blend of liturgical routine and uncontrollable events and emotions.

A Book Of The Book: Some Works and Projections about the Book & Writing
ASIN: 0226165027 |
Book Description
Early in this century, Futurist and Dada artists developed brilliantly innovative uses of typography that blurred the boundaries between visual art and literature. In The Visible Word, Johanna Drucker shows how later art criticism has distorted our understanding of such works. She argues that Futurist, Dadaist, and Cubist artists emphasized materiality as the heart of their experimental approach to both visual and poetic forms of representation; by mid-century, however, the tenets of New Criticism and High Modernism had polarized the visual and the literary.
Drucker suggests a methodology closer to the actual practices of the early avant-garde artists, based on a rereading of their critical and theoretical writings. After reviewing theories of signification, the production of meaning, and materiality, she analyzes the work of four poets active in the typographic experimentation of the 1910s and 1920s: Ilia Zdanevich, Filippo Marinetti, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Tristan Tzara.
Few studies of avant-garde art and literature in the early twentieth century have acknowledged the degree to which typographic activity furthered debates about the very nature and function of the avant-garde. The Visible Word enriches our understanding of the processes of change in artistic production and reception in the twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
Visibility in Language and Art Exposed.......2006-06-27
In this fabulously demanding book, Drucker traces the development of how we see language, how we conceive of it on the page and canvas, and what the ramifications of that are in the realms of sound and meaning. This very densely written, scholarly text is at each page an explosion of citations and reflections which are the condensation of Drucker's dedicated research (I believe of 10+years!) and her exploration of the movements that define our time of the Word Made Flesh. She will either make you feel like you, too, have done all the work to get to these pages, or lead you off on your own hunt for more. Whichever it is, the journey is well worth the effort.
Great Book on Typography Art Movements and Literature.......2001-02-24
This is a great book that talks about Typography in the early avant-garde age; Futurism, Dada, Cubism. It discusses the relationship between visual art, typography and poetry. It's a great reference on experimental typography.
Book Description
A publishing first, this is the only book on the market to examine the intriguing history, evolution, and application of four specific genres of dynamic letterforms: hand-drawn, vernacular, humorous, and digitally driven.
The book provides a historical context for each genre and explores the anatomy of its type, with a look at the form and function of representative examples. Selected full alphabets and letterforms are presented with text on their origins and analog or digital evolution, and work produced by a wide range of designers shows how these typographic forms are applied. The authors then assess how these forms will continue to evolve.
Customer Reviews:
EXPERIMENTAL??!!?? IT THAT'S WHAT YOU CALL A PS PLUG-IN.......2002-03-09
When i mean experimental typography and working with computer type, i except studies about ways to use computer and bitmap fonts - not experimental in the definition of "vary you type case and your experimental" or "punk and bloat for experimental."
unfortunately i should have known that ANYTHING labeled experimental typography should be avoided. just study the classics and break it down yourself.

Impressive.......2000-09-29
Designers wishing to educate / RE-educate themselves in typography, as it relates to the digital realm, would find this book an invaluable resource. The first chapter does a great job of establishing the traditional "rules" of typography. As the author simply states, "Rules must be understood before they can be broken". Visual examples corresponding with each rule help demonstate the Do's and Dont's of how to render type so that the designer can effectively communicate his/her message. Once covered, the remaining chapters offer wonderful examples of how to alter type in new and unusual ways. Many go a step further to explain what emotional responses can occur by using type in unconventional ways. The final section includes galleries of digital print work, many illustrating the theories from earlier chapters.
The only minor flaw with the book is that it should have included a glossary of typography terms. Those who might be new to typography or "a bit rusty" are bound to trip a little while reading the through first chapter.
Whether you are an Amateur or Seasoned Professional, this book should be a welcome addition to your library.
REALLY A GREAT RESOURCE!.......1999-07-10

Book Description
This book critically engages with the visual appearance of prose fiction where it is manipulated by authors, from alterations in typography to the deconstruction of the physical form of the book. It reappraises the range of effects it is possible to create through the use of graphic devices and explores why literary criticism has dismissed such features as either unreadable experimental gimmicks or, more recently, as examples of the worst kind of postmodern decadence. Through the examination of problematical texts which utilize the graphic surface in innovative and unusual ways, including Samuel Beckett’s Watt, B.S. Johnson’s Albert Angelo, Christine Brooke-Rose’s Thru and Alasdair Gray’s Lanark, this book demonstrates that an awareness of the graphic surface can make significant contributions to interpretation.
