excellent choice.......2004-03-01
Mountain Gorillas in Danger serves as an excellent support for struggling readers in the 4th-5th grade. I am a 5th grade special education teacher and I read this book with my students. They loved it!! They then wrote letters to various organizations expressing their concern for mountain gorillas. The illustrations are colorful, appealing, and correlate well with the text. The content of the book is written in a simplistic manner, but is loaded with facts and statistics about mountain gorillas. It is clear from the text that the author cares deeply about the subject.

Informative and captivating!.......2002-01-09
My seven and five year olds received this book as a gift for Christmas. We have read and reread it so many times that I could probably recite it. The language is perfect for children and the inclusion of a glossary is wonderful. The children also love the photographs. It was such a hit that my daughter(7) has chosen Mountain Gorillas as the topic for her first research project. The book contains a great deal of information delivered in a fun, easy to understand manner.

A Nature Lover's Delight.......2001-06-08
I would have given this book 5 stars except for one problem. It really needs a pronunciation guide. Even adults will have difficulty pronouncing some of the unfamiliar animals' names. That said, all else is wonderful. The illustrations give a real feel for the forest habitat and its inhabitants. The story line describes typical activities of the various animals. It is like watching a PBS documentary on wildlife! In the back of the book there is a globe of the world, with the appropriate area spotlighted, and a one page blurb about the Virunga Mountains which is directed towards adults. Then there is a beautiful four page spread of the rain forest. On the fold-over pages to the four page spread are 32 different illustrations of plants and animals that live in the forest. A beautiful & informative book. I am eager to also read the other books in this series.

Customer Reviews:
Frommer's has done it again!.......2007-09-15
Frommer's Greek Islands is just what I was looking for! The section I found most helpful was the appendix in the back of the book that gives info on Greece in depth which briefly lists the Gods & Goddesses, language, useful words & phrases, as well as some menu terms. Even though the book is very light weight I plan on cutting out that section out of the book and keeping it in my pocket for shore excursions on the Islands. I have used Frommer's books in the past with the most recent being Rome. I live in New York and keep a copy of Frommer's New York for foreign travelers who visit me and want to head out on their own. I also found alot of info. in Eyewitness Travel Guides "The Greek Islands" it has glossy color photos, and is a good guide but way too heavy to pack let alone carry on a tour!
Good info but repeats Frommer's Greece.......2007-03-23
I thought this book would give me additional info about the Greek Islands but it only repeated what was in the Frommer's Greece book, with a few extra inconsequential chapters. You really only need one or the other.
An excellent guide to "just" the islands!.......2005-08-13
The principal difference between this book and "Frommer's Greece" is that this one covers the option of selecting a cruise of the islands, and that section is very good. So, if a major concern is choosing a cruise line (or ship) for your Greek vacation, take a look at this guide. Otherwise, "Frommer's Greece" covers all the mainland (and all the islands) for the same price. Frommer's stands out for clear writing, logical indexing, and especially for running the gamut from budget tourism to the more affluent. His starred system with comments for value or attractiveness to family is understandable with good common sense. Studying Frommer's helps me make the decisions I personally want to make. It will save you many times the price of the book and make your stay much more enjoyable.

Leaves much to be desired.......2005-02-16
Unfortunately this book lacks much of the detail and thoroughness that some other guides to the Greek Islands offer (such as the Eyewitness travel guide). Although the major islands are covered in some detail, this book almost entirely ignores a lot of other islands, even some that are quite large. This is a real disappointment because the true wonder of the Greek Island experience is that you can travel to all kinds of places, some very small but no less significant. A good travel guide for the Greek Islands therefore needs to include just as much detail about these less-visited islands as it does about the more well-traveled ones. This book also lacks a lot of the photograps that other books include, which I think is important because the Greek Islands are so diverse. It really does help to see pictures of the islands to help you decide which ones to visit. If you're planning a trip to the Greek Islands you can do much better than this book for a travel guide.
Great reference.......2000-05-20
I went traveling in Greece 2 years ago and found other travel books to lack info on the Greek Islands and had to struggle my way through the islands. As I am planning to return this summer, I have found this book to be a good reference to prepare, and one that I will bring with me. When most of us think of Greece, the Greek Isles are the place most of us invision. This book gave me a good reference as to where to go, where to stay and what there was to do. I would reccommend this book to others.

Prehistoric History.......2007-03-24
I enjoyed the way the book presented ideas about the Ice Age and its inhabitants in a cartoon format. However, I was looking for a book that was appropraite for 1st graders to read independently this would be a little above them. I think 2nd and 3rd graders would enjoy this book and be able to understand the humor.

Customer Reviews:
good starter book on fish diseases.......2007-05-26
This is a nice book on pond and aquarium fish diseases. Lots of color photographs to help identify diseases, and suggestions for treatment.
Written with a slight British flavor and point of view, it still
gives a great deal of information. While not as in-depth as Untergasser's
treatise on fish disease, it is a good first choice to look up your ailing fish's symptoms and treatment.
Invaluable Information for the Fish Hobbyist.......2005-10-27
Part Two of this book (98 pages) describes in detail the many diseases that can afflict fish, their causes, and what to do about them. Illustrated with small but clear photos of the ailments, along with "Diagnostic Pointers" and "Treatment," this section will be useful for the hobbyist at all levels of their expertise. The final chapter of Part Two also addresses "Medicines, Sedation, and Euthanasia", and how to best quarantine a new or ailing fish, so as not to infect the rest of an established collection in your pond or aquarium.
For the beginner, Part One (58 pages) has invaluable information, and is titled "Learning the Basics". The chapter on water quality is superb, with an excellent description of the "Nitrate Cycle", which includes the ammonia/nitrite content, potentially deadly if not kept in check by testing, and especially necessary during the first few months of starting up an aquarium, sometimes referred to as "new tank syndrome." I wish I had read this book before setting up my tank, as I would have been more wary of the soaring nitrate level that caused a little fantail to depart for goldfish heaven.
Jepson writes at length about "The Five Freedoms" (developed by John Webster in 1995), which are 1: Freedom from thirst, hunger, and malnutrition. 2: Freedom from discomfort. 3: Freedom from pain, injury, and disease. 4: Freedom to express most normal behavior. 5: Freedom from fear and distress. These principles apply to all living creatures, but for the beginner fish hobbyist, how to provide them is sometimes a complex mystery, as one has to learn how to set up an "ecosystem" that is foreign to us. Veterinarian Jepson, who is a member of the British Veterinary Society among other prestigious affiliations, tells us how to achieve these goals for our finned friends, and writes in a succinct, no-nonsense style, and though the information is sometimes quite technical, it is always easy to understand.
Amazon.com
The first definitive text on the subject, The Art and History of Black Memorabilia provides a sensitive rendering of a difficult topic and intelligently discusses a variety of interpretations for a large range of products and advertisements that relate to the experience of African Americans. Beginning with a brief timeline of specific events in African American history, author Larry Vincent Buster balances discussions of modern pop culture, politics, and the international slave trade from 1324 to 1995. Buster's preface makes it clear that his writing is both a labor of love and a scholarly document--he was willed a large collection of memorabilia from a friend, and his examination of this collection led him to write this book.
Each chapter details a particular type of relic, including accessories to the slave trade, printed entertainment posters and advertisements, dolls, bric-a-brac, and magazines, photos, and books related to more recent heroes like Martin Luther King Jr., Joe Louis, Malcolm X, and Madam C.J. Walker. Throughout the book, special sections are devoted to characters of particular importance, ranging from Little Black Sambo to Josephine Baker. In all cases, the text addresses the variety of emotions these collections inspire, as well as the practical details related to collecting: pricing, rarity, popularity, and specifics on how to spot fakes. Buster's words on Aunt Jemima express the multiple meanings behind the memorabilia as a whole: "Aunt Jemima and her clones have come out of the closet as collectibles, coveted by connoisseurs.... Others are mystified by her power to degrade, anger and offend." Certainly, collectors and historians alike have much to learn from Buster's work, and The Art and History of Black Memorabilia is sure to serve as both a conversation starter and reference guide for years to come. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Black memorabilia is one of the most provocative areas of collecting in America today, encompassing anything made by or depicting people of African descent. It includes a diverse range of objects and documents that span five centuries of African-American life, from trade cards to kitchen novelties; dolls and toys to sports and civil-rights mementos; cereal boxes and product labels to books and sheet music; and even the shackles, classified ads, and bills of sale that document the long years of black slavery.
Often harsh and painful to examine, these artifacts nonetheless offer an important window into American history. They have become highly valued collectibles, and especially so among African Americans.
The Art and History of Black Memorabilia, by Larry Vincent Buster, is the first fully illustrated overview of this remarkable area of Americana. With more than two hundred color photographs, this volume examines the most desirable black collectibles and places them within their historical and social contexts. The author, himself a noted collector, includes information on how to buy, display, and preserve black memorabilia and explains how to spot fakes and reproductions. Also included are explorations of some of the most well-known and influential African-American figures in popular culture.
At times horrifying yet sublime, insulting yet intriguing, humorous, heartbreaking, and inspiring, The Art and History of Black Memorabilia is a landmark chronicle of the black experience in America.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful Book About Beautiful People!!!!!!.......2003-07-10
I am not a black memorabilia collector but I enjoyed this book for its array of historical facts concerning the history of African Americans. Larry Buster wonderfully illustrates this book with over 200 photos. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Black history and collectibles.
Powerful Images and History.......2001-05-23
Wow! One of the first books that I've found that doesn't talk about Black Memorabilia as commodity but rather as a history. There are no prices guides attached to the pictures. The book is a time line of black history. It's not incredibly detailed but still nonetheless very powerful. The items in this book are photographed beautifully. Lester V. Buster shows wide range of images: slave shackles, dolls (from Mammy to Mr. T), images of blacks in advertising (from derogatory and dehumanizing to that of Black American heroes). This is a very powerful and informative book for anyone, especially historians and collectors.

Customer Reviews:
Southern Living Garden Problem Solver.......2003-01-18
This is a book I have recomended to first time gardeners and people who have been gardening for quite some time. I have never been dissapointed with any of the Southen Living Gardening books, for clear advice. It is a good all around reference book.
I love this Garden Book!!.......2002-07-16
I have bought many gardening books that promise to help me solve my gardening problems. Most address some issues and a few were no help at all. This is not one of those books. This book covers a huge range of gardening problems and I have yet to refer to it and not have it give me some answers. It's a must for anyone looking for a solid all around garden book. Everything from lawns to vegitables to plants and shrubs. If you have a disease problem this book can help. If you need answers on why certain plants are dying this book can help. Do you have pest problems? Yep, this book can help. It's not a garden dictionary so it is not hard to read. I have finally found a book that I can use on a regular basis. I love it!
A "must have" for the Southern gardener.......2001-06-01
I refer to this book at least once or twice a week. My neighbors even ask me to look stuff up for them when they have a gardening question. It is very easy to use, and the author is very direct and to the point. The pictures are beautiful and inspirational, but this is not a book of lofty gardening ideals, it is an informative, how to achieve it, how to fix it and how to get started type of book. It can save both time and money by dealing exclusively with what works and what doesn't in various Southern climates. It is worth every penny.
Best problem solving book around.......2000-04-03
Another book has never been written so comprehensibly for the gardner from novice to pro. Direct information that is easily understandable that any gardner can immediately use to solve the problem. The pictures and descriptions of the problems that any gardner may experience are well written and accurate. A must have for any gardner because it saves time and money by getting you directly to the problem without having to go through several different "it may be this" or "it may be that" type descriptions found in other garden books.

Book Description
Forestry in Central and Eastern European countries is going through a turbulent phase, caused by an uncertain economic situation, ownership changes and envisaged memberships of the European Union. Additionally, recent developments in the environment give reasons for concern, like the effects of air pollution, acidification and possible climate change. Another recent development in Europe is the tendency to shift towards a more nature oriented forest management. The aim of the book is to give insight in possible future development directions of the forests of CEC and NIS countries in order to contribute to current discussions about sustainability, the future biological potential, management options and impacts of environmental changes. With a large scale scenario model (EFISCEN), a quantitative assessment of future wood production in Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine, its degree of sustainability under various scenarios of forest growth and timber harvest, and the overall consequences of forest decline and climate change on future wood supply was made.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
In this follow-up to his first volume, On Black Culture, Femi Ojo-Ade continues his in-depth explication and exploration of black essence and experience, primarily through literature, as well as through socio-political events and personal actions and interactions. He discusses a broad range of themes, based upon the works of prominent writers of Africa and the African Diaspora. From Ama Ata Aidoo, Micere Mugo, Miriam Tlali, Aminata Sow Fall, Michele Lacrosil, Aline Franca, and Nikki Giovanni to Abdias do Nascimento, Nicolas Guillen, Leon-Gontran Damas, W.E.B. Du Bois, Richard Wright, and Marcus Garvey, Ojo-Ade analyzes various sites where black continues to suffer from the opprobrium of racism and to be a symbol of inferiority.
In his book, Ojo-Ade's also addresses Du Bois's prediction that "the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color line." As an internationally renowned researcher, Ojo-Ade uses his own many travelsfrom Africa to Brazil, Britain, Canada, Cuba, France, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and the United Statesto realistically assess the dilemma of being black in the world. He makes insightful and challenging observations, while asserting that black can only become beautiful again if blacks take a cue from the axiom proposed by the Brazilian writer-politician-activist, Abdias do Nascimento: "Only if I love myself may I truly love and interact with others [as human beings]."
Ojo-Ade's conclusions are rather disturbing because he does not mince words; yet, he sees room for hope, emanating from the blacks' resilience and constant struggle to re-affirm their humanity. This book is essential reading for those interested in understanding the complex experience of African peoples and for scholars of black literature and culture.
