Good review, but only one island..........2005-10-19

The book is great, has a lot of information about the Big Island, but that is it's shortcoming. Knowing that most trips to Hawaii are those to more than one island, the Lonely Planet book about the whole state would probably be more appropriate.

I've been a frequent visitor to the Big Island and plan on moving there soon. The 'Lonely Planet Big Island' and 'Hawaii the Big Island Revealed' are your two must have guides to the Big Island.

whatever you do, don't substitute the Hawaii Revealed guide for this book. Lonely Planet Hawaii has everything in it. It contains no fluffy puff stuff or downer opinions. Our copy is worn from four weeks on the road and although pretty beat up, we deem it gospel. Traditionally the Lonely Planets are written by real travelers who are objective and write really well. They have no bones to pick. This is no exception.

This book is like you are being told what will happen at gladiator school. That is what makes it funny. Even though it is funny, you learn things. For instance, did you know that you would have to eat barley grains and roasted beans for dinner and ash for dessert? Another reason I like this book is the illustrations. The illustrations also make the book funny because they make the people look weird. You may have read another books in the "You wouldn't want to" series. As you know they are really good books.

As the price of digital technology has plummeted, its availability has become more democratized. The result has been an explosion of creativity, as more and more people find the powerful new tools of self-expression available to them. No medium has been as completely revolutionized by computer typography, in particular, than that of the small press. This book takes us through some examples of the most innovative work coming from periodicals in the past few years. Sometimes odd, but frequently brilliant, it is always exemplary of the tremendous freedom digital composition has given to the page designer. If you're in the business, chances you'll find stuff here to inspire you. If you just like art, you won't be disappointed, either.

[One side note: don't expect any step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce this art. Don't even expect much explanatory text with each plate. It's just a gallery. Even so, you can learn a lot just by looking at the approximately 220 full-color plates on offer here.]

This book is great inspiration for any graphic designer. If I'm struggling for an idea, this is my muse. The art found in this book is primarily from page design (magazines, books) with very little web design. This is not a negative comment, just don't expect to see much web design. The medium is irrelevant; it's just great design.

When I need great ideas and inspiration, I pick up this book! What a wonderful collection of thought provoking artwork. If you are an artist, this book is a must have...it is well worth the price and you'll find yourself pcking it up all the time. I see something new in it I didn't see before every time I open it.

While I haven't used this book to shop until I drop, I have used it when I want to shop for something specific. It is organized by type of items sold but also has an index in the back that allows you to see what stores are in a certain location (by city). I like the latter because I found there was a store I used to go to elsewhere (out of my way) right around the corner from my office. I also use it to find other stores that are near a place I am already headed for.

Line with feeling.......2001-01-23

I teaching drawing at a city college and was introduced to this book from one of my students. It's a moving illustration of what can be done with the simplicity of line, how it can create an emotional understanding as well as record what stands before you. Whether dealing with the thundering animal skeletons in the natural history museum or giving the impression of a timeless Paris street corner, Bresson's line flies about to give you the moment and movement he sensed. A must for those interested in the poetry of drawing.
