What began as the author's translation of Japanese-language Kyoto street and informational signs grew into a bountiful little book complete with superstitions, legends, history, and popular culture. The map key foretells the natural details used to guide the visitor through 27 walking tours of this beautiful, ancient city. Pagodas, gates, and shrines are marked, along with waterfalls, springs, cherry trees, plum trees, and lotus flowers. Romantic names such as "Sound of Feathers Waterfall," "Moon-Crossing Bridge" and "Teahouse of Clear Rippling Waves" intimate how highly the Japanese regard the natural world. On each clearly written tour, the author reveals fascinating facts about the city: the lattice-windowed wooden townhouses are called eel houses because of their depth and narrowness, and norens are the split curtains that help distinguish businesses from homes, hanging in the doorways of open shops and restaurants to announce the name of the business and the nature of its trade. Whether or not you're planning a trip to Kyoto, this is a fascinating glimpse into the culture of Japan.

    Book Description

The thirty walking tours in Exploring Kyoto take you both to famous sites and to little-known but equally rewarding treasures tucked away up back streets or behind an unassuming gate or doorway. Supplemented with detailed maps for each walk, sixteen pages of color photographs, and thoroughly researched information on the city's culture and history, Exploring Kyoto is a book no visitor to Japan should be without.

Old-fashioned stuff is nice, but why spend all of your time looking at history? For fun, go shop at JR Isetan in Kyoto Station, visit The Cube (it's a mall), Go eat at Neutron and see their cool art gallery, and if you're a modern girl/guy, go shop at Moohoop and Ciaopanic. Those stores are awesome, the Japanese equivalent to Urban Outfitters.

This book is good for the historically-minded traveller.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for visiting Kyoto.......2004-08-31

I found this book to be perfect,in every aspect, as a traveling companion for a trip to Kyoto. This book tells you in great detail about things that are off the beaten path and very much a part of kyoto's culture.
I would highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2004-01-05

Exploring Kyoto is a wonderful guide for the independent traveler to Kyoto. Thanks to Judith Clancy's careful research, I have found places in Kyoto which I never knew existed and explored them in depth. Last month I spent two days in Ohara, a mountain village on the outskirts of the city, using the book as a guide. No other guidebooks in English cover this area but armed with the book, I wandered about finding temples that even Japanese ignored. I have done the same in Fushimi, a sake-brewing area to the south of Kyoto and at Nanzenji, one of the loveliest temples in the city.
If you are adventurous and want to travel on your own, I urge you to purchase this book before you leave and plan your Kyoto visit to include at least one of her fascinating walks.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2002-04-27

We purchased several guide books in planning our trip to Kyoto. This book was referred to far more than the others.

If you enjoy exploring on your own and blazing your own, private path, I have not found a book that compares. Its detailed maps, descriptions and histories made our trip a joy. It's not full of information about restaurants and shopping, but the regular guides have plenty of that. As a walking guide or as a fun, insightful history of the city's sights and neighborhoods, it excels. It is also a fun read. We couldn't see all we wanted to in the days we were there, but we eventually get back to Japan, this book will be packed!

3 out of 5 stars A scholarly look at ancient Kyoto.......2002-04-03

The author does not try and hide her distaste for the modern aspects of Japanese cities, her focus is on the historical background of the sights and the tone of her writing is dry and almost textbook. If you are the type of person who reads all of the written information available on the plaques in museums and you love to learn about the history of the places you visit you will enjoy reading this book. The information has much more depth than what you will find in a typical tour book but not all of the major sights are covered.

My problem with 'Exploring Kyoto' is that it is tries to be a collection of walking tours that you would carry and use as a guide but it does not work well in that way. For one the book is cumbersome and not organised in a way that is easy to follow on the fly. The maps are poor and the descriptions of the routes are not always clear. Sometimes it is not even clear where you need to start the walk. The text is more suitable to reading in a comfortable location before or after you head out.

On the positive side, I had a really great time exploring the western outskirts of Kyoto with this book, and it gave me a look at the Goin district that was richer than I found elsewhere. It covers some of the 'must see' sights of Kyoto but I found its' strength to be in the lesser known sights in the outskirts of the city. If you plan to be in Kyoto only a couple of days this book may be unnecessary, there is a free pamphlet available at the tourist office called 'Kyoto Walks' that covers the main sights. If you will be in Kyoto a week or longer and want to visit some lesser known, historically fascinating sights, 'Exploring Kyoto' may be of value to you.

5 out of 5 stars Midwest Book Review.......2005-05-25

Civil War Soldier: Looks at America's bloodiest war from the perspective of what it was like to serve from both sides. The book explores everything from enlistment to medical treatments for injuries. This is a delicate subject to approach when writing a book for children and in my opinion Thomas Ratliff has done a superb job of getting the facts across in a serious yet entertaining way that is not threatening. I found it to be an enjoyable read filled with little known facts about the life of a soldier during service.

    1 out of 5 stars Appalling book.......2005-05-14

This is one of the worst books for kids I have ever seen. The text is OK, but the illustrations are terrible. It is done in a cartoon manner, but it makes the soldiers of the Civil War look like a bunch of buffoons. I know the idea is to appeal to young boys--but this book goes too far. On one page dead soldiers are laying in a battlefield--their butts are up in the air and they look more drunk than dead. Scenes depicting amputations are made to look humerous. This is no way to present history. Kids are already de-sensitized to violence, and this book makes it look funny. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone!

This book was, one again, everything I hoped it would be. One thing, it is more of a 'magazine' type book, but still has fabulous pictures in it. I love all the differnt looks of the letters and have used one of the letters as a tattoo! It has fabulous desigs that are much more unique than the run-of-the-mill tribal art or celtic art designs. This book is great!

      Book Description

In 1963, just three years out of veterinary school, Dr. John McCormack moved his wife and kids to Choctaw County, Alabama, to start his first practice. Choctaw folk never had a licensed vet before, and, with few exceptions, they welcomed the red-headed doctor and the tireless care he gave their animals.

Fields and Pastures New is the heartwarming story of young Dr. McCormack's first years in this deeply rural country, where mule-drawn wagons still bumped down dirt roads . . . where the local barbershop was the best place to catch up on the news . . . and where nobody ever let Doc forget his most embarrassing moments.

"I am proud to say that my closest friendships, outside my family, have been with my clients," Dr. McCormack writes. "I hope readers will get to know some of the workings of the small family farm, and how these down-to-earth people confront their hardships and disappointments with so much good humor."

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Master Story Teller.......2005-06-16

This book relates some of McCormack's adventures as the new vet in a southern country town during the early 1960s. McCormack grew up on a farm in Tennessee. His college roommate, a pre-vet major, interested him in veterinary science. Once he earned his veterinary degree and had a few years of experience under his belt, he set off in search of a town where he could hang up his shingle with an independent veterinary practice. At the time, Butler, Alabama had no licensed vet, so it seemed like a reasonable place for a new vet to make a start. In this book, McCormack describes the characters he met, both human and bovine, during that first year in Butler.

McCormack is a master storyteller. With his careful choice of words, he conveys the character of the place with all its color. While chatting with some locals at a general store, McCormack quipped he went into veterinary rather than human medicine because he didn't like dealing with people. But he tells us that this is absolutely not true-if there's one skill that a vet must have above all others, it's the ability to deal with people, to understand their needs and character. In this book, McCormack regales us with tales of how he came to learn this lesson.

      5 out of 5 stars nicely written.......2005-05-24

I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and entertaining. I loved the Herriot stories so much, this is another great book about vet stories. It will definately be worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing Than Being There Assisting Dr. McCormack.......2001-05-26

I own the hardback copy of this book...actually I have owned it for a few years now. It is one of those books that become a literary treasure in your bookcase. I was so hooked on this book when I first got it, I read it from cover to cover in one day...I just couldn't put it down!

Dr. McCormack in the US can be likened to James Herriott of England. His stories of animals that he treated and the start of his career in the 1960's makes the reader feel they are right along side him assisting in whatever procedure needs to be done to his animal patient.

I am a person of great compassion for animals and as a reader, I was truly appreciative that the love and compassion that Dr. McCormack has for his animal patients shines through to the reader's soul. I laughed with this book..I have cried with this book...I have pulled for the sick animal in this book...I have rooted Dr. McCormack through as he treated tough cases in this book.

There are books about animals and then there are the special books about animals because the respect, compassion from the writer is there and the animal patients become real as one reads along the journey in the book.

If you are a James Herriott fan or an animal lover who is a reader, I highly, and I stress highly, suggest getting this book and reading it!

5 out of 5 stars Good Vet Stories, Great Portrait of Alabama.......2001-04-18

My people are not from Choctaw County, but we're from "around there." This is not only a sympathetic and heartfelt account of a rural vet practice in the sixties; it's a very accurate look at the folks you were likely to meet then and there, both the good and the bad. I have met most of the folks he talks about, or at least their near relations. Dr. McCormack's extended meditation on the verbal mangling of his job description by his neighbors is alone worth the price of admission, although the account of his visit to the Governor's Mansion driving the "rounds vehicle" and a too-long-delayed boar cutting run it very close. Excellent book.

      5 out of 5 stars A good read anytime!.......2000-07-16

I really enjoyed this book. It had good detail, and you really felt like you were going on the rounds with Dr. McCormack. I have read it several times since I bought it, and it is hard to put down each time, even though I know the outcome!

I enjoyed reading how tough it was to convert some of the farmers to the methods of modern veterinary medicine, and it was interesting to read the different methods the farmers had preferred to treat the illnesses in their livestock and pets until their was more modern help available.

This book helped me a lot in deciding which tree to grow and maintain. This book had drawings and pictures that assisted me in pruning, wiring, and the transplanting of my tree.

4 out of 5 stars The title is a little misleading........1999-02-17

While this book does stress the main idea of indoor growing, it doesn't help when the author tells us to move the plant outdoors in the spring. The lighting requirement for each species is really helpful and the photos are beautiful. The illustrations make repotting easier to do (you can see how the tree is tied to the pot). The care is detailed and quick since you can see at a glance how much watering is needed or when to propagate.n

4 out of 5 stars For People who Make Costumes.......2001-12-18

I found this book helpful in my ongoing research for making
medieval costumes in a number of ways. It gives correct terms for clothing and how they were worn in an historical context and how they overlap in language and region. Although the plethora of terms are at times hard to keep straight with out keeping notes. The book also helps in describing the costumes in the plates. Examples are; what country or people influenced the style or cut, the differences in the head gear, why people are wearing different head coverings, who wore boots in what time period and why they didn't in others.I wish the book had more plates for all the examples the author mentions but doesn't show.I find the reading interesting and helpful but not as complete as I would like. The bibliographical epilogue in chapter nine I thought was especially helpful for further study, but not all inclusive. For the serious costumer of the Middle East I would highly reccommend it. I find it helpful in my research for historically accurate costuming.

2 out of 5 stars Long awaited but very disappointing in places.......2001-02-02

Long awaited and eagerly anticipated by those of us working in this area, 'Arab Dress' raises questions as to the validity and bias of the author's research and text. I can only comment on the problems I found in the small sections that deals with my own areas of knowledge - Palestinian costume - and recommend that Stillman's conclusions regarding other areas of 20th century Arab costume traditions be confirmed by other reference sources.

While Dr Stillman was indeed an acknowledged authority on medieval Arab costume and on Jewish costume in the Middle East, her husband's posthumous accreditation of her in the introduction of this book as "the world's acknowledged expert on the history of the clothing of the Arab world" is perhaps, while understandable, a little excessive. It seems unlikely that "the world's acknowledged expert" would somehow have missed listing 30 years worth of British Museum publications on Arab costume and Islamic textiles in her Bibliography.

Stillman writes that her Bibliography contains a "full conspectus of the secondary literature (together of course with references to the scattered and highly diverse primary sources) on Arab and Islamic attire and costume". On the subject of Palestinian costume alone, only one of Shelagh Weir's seven publications on the subject is listed, as is only one of Jehan Rajab's. Ziva Amir's works are entirely missing. Disturbingly, all the monographs and articles by Palestinians collecting and researching this area - Widad Kawar, Leila el Khalidi, Abu Omar, and Al-Hassan etc - are missing (these authors have at least one monograph each in English). Missing, too, are all the research publications and exhibition catalogues of the Palestinian Heritage Foundation (USA), Palestinian Heritage Center (Bethlehem), Dar el Tifl Museum (Jerusalem), and the Palestine Costume Archive (Canberra) amongst other Palestinian research organizations. As for "scattered and highly diverse primary sources" Stillman lists absolutely none of the sources in Arabic produced over the last 50 years in this field.

In her small section in 'Arab dress' on 20th century ethnographic studies, Stillman sums up a century of research on Palestinian costume in one sentence listing three exhibition catalogues and one monograph, one of which was her own publication on the subject in 1979. The others are Weir (1989) Rajab (1989)(both excellent books, yes)and what she calls an "important anthology" produced by the Institute du Monde Arabe. A quick look inside the cover of this catalogue would reveal it to be the French edition of the exhibition curated by the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne, "Pracht und Gemeimnis: kleidung und schmuck aus Palastina und Jordanien". The Institute du Monde Arabe simply had the exhibition on loan. Credit for the catalogue - and it's reference in her Bibliography (where it only found under the name of the one author who included an article about Ottoman costume - a topic of more interest to Stillman, and one which is well represented in the Bibliography) should have been to the organizing museum. This may appear petty, but it reveals careless research.

I am also concerned about her choice of illustrations and figures. Most deal with early or medieval subjects and are, I'm sure, relevant to her research interests. However, like her text on various 20th century Arab country traditions, contemporary plates are very eclectic. The Palestinian wedding jacket shown (from her 1979 publication) is a bizarre choice as it features foreign motifs and is thus in no way a traditional example. No traditional example is shown to anchor it, nor is any information given about where it is from in Palestine or why or how it was worn. As this is the only illustration of Palestinian costume it would have been nice to have had something more indicative of the culture - even a photograph of a complete outfit showing how various clothing came together would have seemed more relevant. Figure 11, an "example of the Palestinian thawb" also from her 1979 publication, again has no informative text whatsoever, and is thus misleading because thobs only came in that style from one particular area in Palestine. It is misleading to call it representative.

While Stillman makes occasional reference to Palestinian costume in her general text she appears to have undertaken no further research on the subject since her 1979 publication accompanying the exhibition held at the International Museum of Folk Art at Santa Fe. This is of some concern because an awful lot has happened in this field since that time. Apart from issues such as the rise of nationalism and the re-introduction of traditional dress as a form of passive resistance amongst Palestinian women resulting from the original intifada, there has also been huge development in the production of traditional embroidered items by various refugee aid organizations. None of this is mentioned in "Arab Dress", although it has been mentioned in the six or seven English language monographs that have been published since Stillman's 1979 book.

What worries me here is that if I can find this many problems in the one area of this publication with which I am reasonably familiar(after 19 years research)what problems may potentially exist in other areas? I don't doubt Stillman's expertise in early or medieval Islamic attire but her sections on Arab costume by country may not as informed as they first appear. Admittedly this is a posthumous book and may not, despite a labor of love on behalf of her husband, be on the form that she originally visualized publishing. Still, it is a concern when a publication such as this is promoted as an expensive reference tool, and possesses so many omissions. And that is the main problem with "Arab Dress" - omissions in the Bibliography, omissions in the text and omissions in the illustrations.

Buy it for it's historical research on the early and medieval Islamic period by all means, but for the study and illustration of 20th century Arab and Islamic costume and textile traditions, you will need additional reference sources.

                  4 out of 5 stars Arabesque Galore!.......2000-08-07

This is a wonderful reference book, not just for the clothing and photos, but a great study of the art and life in Arab cultures. The book is well written and very precise in it's descriptions of the clothing and it's meaning and purpose. It's very well worth the money if you are a serious collector of the culture or just a fashion buff!

                            5 out of 5 stars I won't forget this book!.......2005-07-23

The idea of starting over is probably appealing to most people, but in A Clean Slate Kelly has to truly begin again. The characters were wonderful, the story kept moving, and, having lived in Chicago for five years, Caldwell truly brought the city to life. This wasn't a slapstick comedy about a woman who forgets who she is, and it also doesn't hit you over the head with the moral of the story. It's just a a fun read.

                            5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.......2005-06-09

I picked up this book by Laura Caldwell because i really did enjoy Burning the Map. This book was, in my opinion, very different. I enjoyed it even more. I loved the heroine, Kelly McGraw. She was such a real character to me. And I truly couldnt put the book down. I was enthralled the moment i picked it up. You couldnt help but root for Kelly. Like some of the other reviewers, I also wanted to know what happened to Kelly after the book ended.

Pick up this book and you wont be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars What would you do if..........2005-03-22

If you had the chance to hit "redo" and make your life over again, what would you do differently? What forgotten dream would you dust off? Lauren Caldwell's Clean Slate is about a woman who gets that opportunity.

Chick lit gets a bad rap for whiny heroines who have no concept of "real problems." But I found Ms. Caldwell's heroine to be the polar opposite of that unfair chick lit assessment. Kelly was honest, funny, and brave enough to sweep up the pieces of her life and stick the old stuff in the garbage. And yet she was vulnerable in a very sympathetic way - who doesn't enjoy telling a character, "don't do it!"

I wanted to find out what happens after the ending but I had great hopes that Kelly would be just fine.

I just finished reading this book and I loved it. The premise of the story was like no other "chick lit". It had a mystery feel and kept me wondering about the main character. A great tale about looking deep within yourself and figuring out what life means to you.

I agree with the reviewer Mr./Ms. Cooper who pointed out that this book doesn't hold a candle to Radical Forgiveness by Colin Tipping. Ms. Barnhill's use of the bestseller title seems to me to be an attempt to grab some of the market of folks seeking Tipping's wisdom. Barnhill's concept and her book itself trivializes the depths of what it is that Tipping attempts to get across in his book. Shame on Julie Ann Barnhill for not coming up with a title of her own and for her publisher for this shameless marketing strategy.

`Everyone and everything can be forgiven' is the theme of Julie Ann Barnhill's latest book, Radical Forgiveness. Many have condemned themselves so strongly in areas of their lives, that all hope has been lost for a complete cleansing. This book will show this just is not true.

The use of scripture throughout the book assures beyond a shadow of a doubt that God's forgiveness is so radical, it covers even those hidden spots no one knows about. Julie speaks in such a conversational style you can almost hear her voice. You can picture her sitting next to you assuring that due to the forgiveness and grace waiting, sin confessed and turned from is a beautiful thing. Julie's honesty, vulnerability, and understanding of grace make her more than qualified to write this book.

Leading by example, Julie shows how to face what we really need to face: we are a mess. She writes, "All of us need to embrace the messy reality of our existence, for nothing can happen until we admit it." She leads us there by going first and revealing some of what makes her life a mess. She reveals fact and fiction about forgiveness, and how what we say and what we really mean sometimes are two completely different things. She then gives insight on how to master the mind games we play, and how real girlfriends can make our paths so much smoother.

What an excellent book! Its strength lies in Julie's ability to relate simply one woman to another. She reveals that there is not one thing hidden that could be beyond God's willingness and desire to forgive. If you are a woman who has things concealed, if shame has a hold on any part of you, if you want a friend to help you understand how radical God's forgiveness really is, I suggest you read this book. -- Sheri Carlstrom, Christian Book Previews.com

Julie Ann Barnhill delivers authenticity and vulnerability in her book Radical Forgiveness. In this book you will hear someone say out loud some of internal dialogue in your own head and realize "I am not alone." In the chapter titled "It's all About Me" she recalls overhearing a conversation between two attendees at a Christian convention in New Orleans. They were talking about all the "sinful" people of this city who were probably not Christians. She remembers how turned off she was by the gossip. How many of us have been the "Christian" gossip or have overheard the gossip and been turned off. Julie Ann does an excellent job of convicting in a non-judgmental way because she walks alongside us, not ahead wagging her finger. In fact she walks beside us revealing some of the messes she has made in her own life.

This book will help uncover hidden thoughts, past mistakes and current ways that need to be forgiven. You will be drawn to the pages as Julie shows God's desire to forgive all the messy parts of us. Shame, guilt and concealing are all wiped out completely as God calls us to a place that is so radical that after laying truth on the table we actually find peace, not condemnation.

Radical Forgivness is an excellent book! Julie Ann is funny, honest and real. You will find yourself laughing even as she takes you to a deeper level. Her use of scripture assures us that this idea of forgiveness is truth, not just an idea to make us feel better. If you are scorched in any part of your life, have made a mistake in which you cannot offer forgiveness to yourself, I suggest you read this book!

Daisy Zamora's poetry transcends language. She hones in on the most beautiful details from everyday life, such as her aging mother's fragile and small body or the second life she leads through her sister's blood, and makes the reader feel them deeply and immediately. This is a fine collection of her work, well selected and translated by Margaret and Elinor Randall.

To be a woman in revolutionary Nicaragua meant to take an active role in reshaping a country. Daisy Zamora came out of that experience as a poet who found her own voice in the context of extraordinary popular struggle. CLEAN SLATE: NEW & SELECTED POEMS is a collection that embodies a spirit of personal and political liberation. This collection includes works written between the years 1968 and 1993.

"Through her introspective early work, as well as through previously uncollected recent poems, we see the poet at her lyrical best." --Publishers Weekly

"..its real value is that those who read only English can through this bilingual edition appreciate Nicaraguan poetry and the writings of one of the greatest women exponents of the recent life and times of its people." --World Literature Today

"Zamora [was] shaped by revolution and gender, but [her] voice is true and universal, transcending political boundaries and sounding clear notes of sanity in times of madness. Highly accessible for general readers and indispensable for Latin American and women's studies collections." --MultiCultural Review

"Clean Slate: New and Selected Poems," by Daisy Zamora, is a fine volume of poetry by this Nicaraguan author. The poems have been translated into English by the mother/daughter team of Elinor and Margaret Randall. The poems are presented in a bilingual format, with the Spanish originals and English versions on facing pages.

Many of Zamora's poems are about feminist issues and/or the Nicaraguan revolution. Her work is graced my moments of both hope and paradox. Many poems recall the lives of various women: a female guerrilla ("Commander Two"), an oppressed wife ("Loyal Housewife"), a nurse enraged at United States action in Nicaragua ("Emilia, the Nurse"), and more. There is even a poem about the women of Greco-Roman mythology ("Alter Ego").

One of the collection's most distinctive pieces is "Radio Sandino," a long poem which evokes scenes from Nicaragua's civil war. Zamora frequently evokes or pays tribute to other poets: Gabriela Mistral, Sylvia Plath, Ruben Dario, etc. Overall, an impressive collection by a strong voice in Latin American literature.

Her poetry truly touches the heart. I think every woman can relate to some aspect of her poetry.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone!!! It has given me an insight about the Sikh culture and religion while capturing the reader about an individual's struggling life from childhood to adulthood. I have to say from the beginning of the book Dr. Singh was able to capture the reader as if they were part of Hukam's life. It was hard to put the book down, I wanted to know what was going to happen next in his life.

Thank you Dr. Singh. The book gave me an insight into cultural differences. It's a rich portrayal of struggle, growth and faith of a young sikh man whose story is a gift and lesson to the reader. The writing is emotionally honest.

From literature point of view it is an excellent book. It is also an eyeopener for every young sikh going to school or college. The difficulty they confront n the way to solve it. at some point some may feel discouraged but after reading the book they will get perked up a lot and will not feel that much stress as the author experienced it.
As a first generation immigrant I wish I had this book earlierto help me understand my children n what they faced outside.
By having authored the book Dr.Amrik singh made lot of his friends, relatives proud of him.
I strongly recommend the book for everybody.

I really enjoyed reading this book. From the minute I started to read it and as I got to know the main character - I couldn't put it down because I wanted to know what would happen to him. I like to read books where you feel like fictional characters really do exist out there in the real world. The author drew me into the characters, taught me about the Sikh way of life, and left me wanting more. That's what I consider to be the making of an excellent read. I would recommend it to everyone!

I felt that this book gave me great insight on the struggles a young sikh boy has to go through in life. At some points it was emotionally diffcult to read about the physical and mental pain a young boy has to suffer because he does not fit the "norm". This book touched my heart and I'm sure it will touch others as well.
