Book Description
For the first time in one collection, here are Oregon's most famous animal stories, carefully researched and written by author Gayle C. Shirley. Read about... Keiko, the real-life orca star of Free Willy who awaits his pod-reunion Bobbie, the homesick dog who instinctively traveled solo for 3,000 miles across eight states to be reunited with his owners Reelfoot, the notorious outlaw grizzly whose deadly deeds brought his own demise Bob, the famous Portland feline who helped forecast the weather for seven years on KATU TV. These stories and more reveal how some Oregon animals were cherished for their loyalty or admired for their spirit, strength, or intelligence, while others were feared because their instincts to survive put them in conflict with people. Their legends provide enjoyable reading for animal lovers of all ages.

Customer Reviews:
FYI.......2007-05-24
Excellent book especially visiting the very first time in disney
Excellent tips and dining menus
I would have been so unprepared if it wasn't for this book
Great book!.......2007-01-10
Good book for families with kids. Most of the material is listed in other Disney guides, but the kid-centric suggestions are very good. I suggest buying this along with the Unoficial Guide to WDW.
Disney for the 1st time? BUY THIS BOOK!.......2006-06-06
My family (wife, kids ages 13, 10, and 5) just got back from Disney World and had a fantastic time. Our trip wouldn't have been nearly as enjoyable without the information in this book. Since we concentrated on the four main Disney parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and MGM Studios) that's what we paid particular attention to in the book. The information allowed us to get a good idea of what we would be facing when we arrived and gave us a head start on developing a plan to maximize our experience there. I pity anyone that pays the high price for a Disney ticket (though well worth it) and heads into the park blind. We spent 5 full days in the four parks, feel we got our money's worth, and still didn't experience all of it. But we did see and ride what was most important to us - because this book helped us plan our time. In fact, as we headed out for one of the parks each day we tore out the corresponding section of the book out to carry along with us.
Your vacation isn't cheap . . . maximize your investment and enjoyment with a little insight and planning. This book is worth ten times its cost.
A Must Have for Disney Parks.......2006-04-28
I bought along 4 different Disney/Orlando guidebooks on our first family trip to Orlando and this was clearly the best for the Disney Parks. There are descriptions of every ride/attraction for each park, including height requirements and Scare Factor. It proved very prudent to have a plan once inside the crowded parks. Who wants to find out after an hour wait that the ride was too scary for your little one? Also, it is loaded with tips for parents on park basics such as arrival, strollers, first aid, dining, character viewing, fastpass, park maps etc. Highly Recommended!
Very helpful!.......2006-03-31
I just skimmed through our book. My parents bought us a guide because we are going to Disney World this year. One of my favorite features is that this also tells what height you need to be to ride certain rides!

Helpful Trip Guide.......2005-11-30
As is fitting for a guide on Orlando, the bulk of this book is focused on the various theme parks in the area. In addition, all the standard Fodor's material is here covering restaurants and hotels.
The information provided is useful and accurate. The strategies offered for avoiding long lines at the theme parks are helpful. The book also gives descriptions and ratings of every ride and attraction at each park. The descriptions are almost too detailed (if you want any surprises) and their ratings are sometimes a bit generous. Still, the material is quite helpful in deciding which rides to make sure you see and what can be skipped if time is short.
All in all, this is an above average guide. It does suffer in comparison to The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2005 which is the ultimate help in planning a trip to Orlando. Still, the writing is clear and concise and the information is organized logically. If you are planning a trip to the Orlando area, this book deserves to go on your short list of travel guides.

A Dangerous Journey to Freedom.......2005-06-02
This compelling work of historical fiction describes the childhood and the dangerous journey of Harriet Tubman (1820-1913) along the Underground Railroad to freedom. The story describes Tubman's life from age 6 to 24. The author supplies vivid details about Tubman's parents, overseers, and her journey. An Author's Note and generous Epilogue supply an overview of biographical details not set out in the story. Numerous rich full-page pencil drawings by Karen Ritz enhance the text. I recommend this book to any school community.
Review by Don K.
Don't give up.......2005-01-14
5. The book is about Harriet Tubman and her getting free. She got taking away from her mother when she was young. She thought she would never get to see her mother again. But one day she got sick and they let her go back to her mother. She didn't have to go back because she never really got well. She finally got well enough that she could go outside.
6. I think the story is a great story and I thnk anyone should read it.
7.I think the story had irony in it because I didn't think that she would see her mother again and I didn't think she would get sick either.
8. I rated the book five stars because it's the perfect book to read and the book is for anyone.
Go Free or Die.......2002-12-12
My book is Go Free or Die. wrote by Jeri Ferris. The main person in it was Harriet Tubman . Harriet wanted to be free. Because she was a slave. She has been sold but they did not keep her long . Because got hurt to much. She does something about her wanting to be free. My favorite part is were she told her friend she went only were the lord send her. She said this because she had saved over 19 people and never lost one.
Great book to share with your daughter.......2002-07-12
My 6 year-old has just become aware of Harriet Tubman and is fascinated with her story. Of all the books we found in the library this did the best job of really "telling" the story. It takes some liberty with describing her thoughts and feelings but it's authentic to Harriet Tubman's struggle and achievement. And, it's honest without being too scary for a youngster.
Gives you Everything on Harriet........2001-05-18
For school I was doing a report about Harriet Araminta Ross Tubman Davis. I looked up Jeri Ferris for a book because I had already read the one on Sourjourner Truth. When I read this book I got alot more info. than I thought I would. I did my report with no holes of info. missing. This book helped me so much, on my report I got an A+. It really really helped.

Book Description
Readers can use this book as a guide to learn whether their horses are being shod properly or use it to learn to shoe their own horses. The book stresses good horse handling techniques and proper trimming. Correct trimming of the feet is the basis of good shoeing, and neither can be accomplished if the horseshoer cannot get the horse to stand still long enough to work on him-thus the importance of handling. To get really proficient at horseshoeing, it takes a lot of practice trimming and shoeing a lot of different horses. This book covers all the basics in plain, simple language, lavishly illustrated, and diagrammed.
Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2007-06-29
I had some knowledge on how to trim my horses feet. The book gave me more detail and insights I wasn't aware of. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Great for DIY trimming.......2007-05-13
The best book I've seen on the subject. It is informative, easy to understand (for the layman) and without pretensions.
Expert advice from an expert practioner.
WELL-SHOD IS WELL WORTH IT.......2007-04-28
Recently I watched as a local farrier plied his trade with four horses belonging to a friend. Originally I had gone intending to help steady the horses but, as I watched, I became more and more intrigued with the processes that were unfolding before my eyes. Suddenly I found myself wishing that I had paid better attention.
The following day I began my search for a book that would review for me the things that I had witnessed the previous day. My first reaction was discouragement as I, at first, found very little available and then found some excellent books but priced so high that I would have had to hock the farm to buy them. Even my local library fell short.
At last I ran onto this book. WELL-SHOD provides everything I was looking for. There are no lengthy and complicated explorations of unnecessary horse anatomy or boring historical treatises on the evolution of the horseshoe or the process of fitting sets of shoes to horses. Instead you will find excellent explanations of the process including removing old, worn shoes, preparing and trimming hooves and finishing up. The book also provides an excellent look at the necessary tools and how to use them, along with photographic and graphic illustrations that clarify the process.
Don't get me wrong. If I were interested in becoming a veterinarian or in working in or teaching comprehensive levels of hot and cold farrier work I would likely invest in the text-like books that I encountered and shell out the exorbitant dollars required for their purchase. But, having a goal to become proficient in taking care of a horse's hooves--from getting rid of old shoes and applying new ones--I think I'll stick with this one and be happy that I did.
THE HORSEMAN
A MUST-HAVE for horse owners and/or farriers........2006-04-10
This was an outstanding book! Mr. Baskins relies on his MANY years of experience to guide you on properly caring for your horse's hooves and how to ensure that your farrier is properly shodding your horse. I was completely ignorant of what was required to properly shod a horse....that is, until I picked up this wonderful book. I would recommend it as a foundation book for any good horse "person's" library. Even an experienced farrier could pick up vital techniques to assist him/her in shodding the most difficult horse, WITHOUT threatening, bullying or harming this beautiful creature!
Great book for the novice horse owner........2004-10-23
I wanted to know more about how my horses feet are trimmed, and what I could do to keep them maintained and healthy inbetween farrier visits. I was VERY impressed with the quality of pictures, and the ease of explanations for the proceedures being talked about. I have since gone back and used it as a reference tool. It's a book you will use more than once!!

Reading teachers.......2005-02-10
Grades 5 and up. This informational text is listed for ages 4-8, but it really applies to older children based on the language and content. The style of questioning will engage the younger reader, but the answers and the humor may be lost on them. Older readers would have the background knowledge to appreciate the humor and style Munoz-Ryan uses to engage the reader about how raisins are "raised". This book could easily be used in an interdisciplinary unit. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of specific units in most curricula that lend itself to the study of raisins.
