Book Description
Before Mendel, who came closest to the truth about heredity? This book examines the activities of sheep breeders able to transform the appearance and qualities of their stock by combining different traits of body or wool into new patterns. Exploiting what were then untried procedures - individual trait selection, very close inbreeding and progeny testing - they demonstrated inheritance from both sexes and showed how it could be stabilised. Major advances in breeding are associated with the English farmer Robert Bakewell (1725-1795). By the following century, when the same procedures had been established at breeding centres in central Europe, theory as well as practice became the subject of wider attention. In the Brno Sheep Breeders' Society, discussions of patterns of heredity finally gave way to the physiological question, 'What is inherited and how?' The question was posed by Cyrill Napp, abbot of the monastery to which Mendel was admitted six years later.
Book Description
Winner of the Lowell Thomas Award for Best Travel Book, this newly designed collection paints a unique portrait of a complex and captivating land. Through these engaging personal stories, readers witness how Thailand satisfies just about any traveler’s hunger for the exotic, the beautiful, the thrillingly different. Writers include Pico Iyer, Norman Lewis, Diane Summers, Simon Winchester, Ian Buruma, Thalia Zepatos, and Tim Ward. “The breadth and color of the collective portrait [the contributors] provide of Thailand is remarkable.” — Los Angeles Times

Powerful stories of the essence of Thailand.......2007-08-20
The powerful stories and insights from these Traveler' Tales writers captures the essence of this beautiful country. To go to Thailand without the benefit of using this book would be a mistake. While writing my soon to be released memoir: A Broad Abroad in Thailand: An Expat's Misadventures in The Land of Smiles, I referred to the book many times for spellings of exotic foods and places. As I paged through it, I was again moved by the poetic prose of the writers, and found myself reading on and on.
In my book, my last chapter says it all: "I have smelled the sensuous aromas, eaten the exotic food and continue to be awestruck by the ever-evolving weather cycles of this incredible country. I have prayed in Buddhist temples. I have seen boisterous bar girls as they cavorted with the farangs, and watched as they knelt in prayer at the temple. I have witnessed young monks praying in the temples for hours and have observed them laughing and watching TV as playful as young boys in the park.
Lord Buddha most assuredly blessed this beautiful and peaceful country. I believe that the uncomplaining Buddhist tolerance shapes both the lives of the people and the society of Thailand, and cannot help but touch the lives of foreigners who go there seeking asylum for their soul from a spiritually deaf world.
Thailand shares her beauty and many blessings with all foreigners, without prejudice, and calls them back in her own sensuous way. I will miss her crowded cities, dirty, polluted capital, peaceful people who accept all things in life, and her love of laughter and music.
I am eternally grateful that I was blessed to experience it.
Dodie Cross, author of "A Broad Abroad: An Expat's Misadventures in the Land of Smiles"
Capturing the Essence of Thailand.......2007-01-11
This was my first experience with the Travelers' Tales books, but it certainly will not be my last. The stories vary from two to eight pages, and while they differ mightily from one another, each captures the essence of one part of the Thai culture. The stories are educational, entertaining, and some are really funny. A great book!
Outstanding book for every traveler.......2006-11-09
The most outstanding book for traveler I've ever read. Really helped me to keep my eyes open during my trip to Thailand and kept me from being an "ugly American" there.
This book captures Thailand's soul............2006-06-26
As someone who has recently "discovered" the magic and charms of Thailand, like many who've come away from first visits the huge variety of sights, sounds, tastes and "life" leave us perplexed yet so eager to learn much more about this wonderful culture! "Travellers' Tales Thailand: True Stories" answers many of our questions in such a fun way through interesting, even fascinating stories about real people and real places in Thailand.
And there's more, much more, for the book weaves throughout helpful tips, places to visit, experiences to try, helpful Thai words, etc. And the last chapter "What You Need To Know - The Next Step" is a mini-guidebook in itself, a helpful read before going. This book will be with me on all my future visits to this delightful land.

Got Reluctant Readers? Or 4-8 year-olds? _You Wouldn't Want to be an American Colonist : A Settlement You'd Rather Not Start_ should get the Younger Generation Hooked-on-History as it recounts the history of the first English colony, Jamestown, in North America.
Why should the Spanish have all the gold and silver in the New World (the Americas)? The Virgin Queen, Elizabeth, wanted to get in on the good times, too. She appointed Walter Raleigh (soon to be "Sir") to look into it for her.
Wally was no fool, so he sent his half-brother off to the New World to
find the perfect paradise, preferably loaded with the aforementioned goodies. David Antram's snapshot-sized, comically irreverant illustration shows what happened to Wally's good ole brother, but others must have made it through in better shape.
The establishment of that colony (ever wonder why it's called "Jamestown" and not "Elizabethtown"?), and the messes they got themselves into until they finally got it right (it took three tries over twenty-two years), are recounted in somewhat tongue-in-cheek detail by Jacqueline Morley. Even the chapter titles give you a hint of the humor that's coming:
* Introduction
* Virginia - A Bit of History
* The Lost Colony
* Third Time Is a Charm?
* Settling In
* The Algonquins - Friends or Foes?
* Exploring the Territory
* Supply Ships - A Blessing or a Curse?
* Famine and Starvation
* The Colony Grows
* Success!
* Glossary (2 pages)
* Index (1 page)
This book is only one in the "You Wouldn't Want To..." historical series created by David Salariya, a freelance illustrator and designer. He founded The Salariya Book Company in 1989, in England, to "...create and design children's non-fiction books that combined very high educational and editorial standards."
Jacqueline Morley is the author of a number of the books in this series. She's taught English and History, "...and has a special interest in the history of everyday life...." She's also authored non-fiction books for Peter Bedrick Books.
David Antram's whimsical artwork is a major reason the books in this series are so funny. His cartoon-style caricatures are deliberately outrageous. Their company says, "Salariya Books...designed to stimulate, entertain and inform."
Take advantage of David Salariya's creations to let your youngsters have an opportunity to give History a second chance. _You Wouldn't Want to be an American Colonist : A Settlement You'd Rather Not Start_ is definitely worth 5 stars from gobbysreviews.

Book Description
Gary Null has long been known for his work helping people improve their lives through nutrition and natural means. In Natural Pet Care, he turns his attention to animals, and not simply dogs and cats. This comprehensive guide covers birds, fish, snakes, and many other animals. Natural Pet Care presents the latest information on the much-misunderstood subject of how to best care for a pet. The author describes what's wrong with commercial pet food, how to improve on it, what alternatives might work for individual animals, and why pets should eat a vegetarian diet. He shows how animals can overcome common ailments and behavior problems using tested, humane methods. Also included are both sides of such controversies as overvaccination and declawing of cats; sections on home cooking for animals; and an appendix with extensive information about resources and practitioners for those seeking holistic veterinary care.

Customer Reviews:
The worse Iris book I have ever seen!.......2006-04-29
While reading all these nice reviews about this book I am tempted to write my own opinion. So it is - this is the worse book about Irises I have ever seen. First, do not expect much information from this book. The book contains mostly pictures and pictures are the bad part of this book. Some of them are out of focus, some other have completely wrong light, many pictures are with gray, bad colors, etc. Finally, many pictures doesn't really show the structure of the flower, they show something that sometimes even doesn't look like a flower. In a few occasions I found also that text and the picture doesn't match (or the picture was so bad).
Any way, I am very disappointed. I lost some $$.
Not quite what I expected.......2005-11-18
Only the first few pages contain information. First page covers types of irises, second page tells how to read the book, third page covers planting and growing tall bearded iris. All the other pages are just alphabetically listed iris photos with a caption below each one detailing: hybridizer, year, bloom season and height. This pictorial guide is simply like another iris catalog.
Great reference book!.......2001-11-28
This book has awesome photographs and is a wonderful reference book for anyone interested in growing tall bearded irises. I love it!!
A Dream Book For Iris Lovers.......2001-11-10
This is one of the best books on iris's I have seen. It is full of beautiful pictures, page after page. This is a must have for Iris lovers!. I want every flower I see!. I can't say how much I have enjoyed looking at the pictures and wishing spring was here to see the iris's in bloom. I know my garden will be increasing by leaps and bounds with a lot of new added editions. I have visited the author's garden, as she is local, and believe me the pictures are beautiful, but her gardens are totally breath taking.

Book Description
When Joanne B. Mulcahy first helped Mary Peterson--a respected elder of the Akhiok community--find a safe home away from the violence and alcoholism that had altered village life, she never imagined that they would meet again five years later and begin more than twelve years of interviews, letters, and visits that would transform the lives of both women.
Birth and Rebirth on an Alaskan Island offers the fascinating story of Mary's life, from her experience growing up within the traditional society of Akhiok to her work as a teacher, a Community Health Aide, a mother, a grandmother, and an Alutiiq midwife and healer. Through her story we discover a society that blended native Alutiiq culture with the Russian Orthodox teachings handed down from late-eighteenth- and nineteenth-century colonists; that mixed modern education and employment with a subsistence lifestyle; that sanctioned arranged marriages but upheld civil divorce laws; and, above all, that recovered its confidence in traditional healing--both of the body and of the community.
More than a personal story of survival, Birth and Rebirth on an Alaskan Island portrays, in Akhiok, a resilience formed through a return to a strong sense of community. As we become acquainted with the Kodiak world through Mary Peterson's story, we come to realize the strength of the native oral tradition and to see that knowing and healing are pivotal elements of the Alutiiq way--particularly as they bring to light the previously unrecognized efforts, inspirations, and accomplishments of countless women healers.
Customer Reviews:
This is a quietly beautiful and fascinating story.......2002-03-06
This is a quietly beautiful and fascinating story--a work of scholarship and a work of love. Joanne Mulcahy has written a stunning book about Mary Peterson, a remarkable woman, and about the cultural revival that both Mary and the author played crucial roles in bringing about. It is something few Americans know anything about--and all of us should.
