Actually is the only recent guide from Jamaica.......2006-08-10

I bought this guide because is the only guide from Jamaica published in 2006. Not bad, I haven't gone to Jamaica yet but it has been useful for planning my tryp. I think that I will take some of the advices that I've read.

Ridiculously out of date.......2006-08-06

While one can expect a guidebook to be somewhat out of date, this one is so out of date it is ridiculous. Published in January 2006, one would expect the information to at least be accurate as of mid-2005. However, that is far from the case.

Here are few examples of errors:
- The Blue Mountain Inn near Kingston, which receives an excellent review in the book, has been closed since mid-2004.
- Portofino's Restaurant in Kingston closed in 2004, and is now Chez Maria.
- The Fairy Glades Trail in the Blue Mountains closed in 2000 because of thefts of orchids, and can no longer be hiked.
- Jade Garden restaurant in Kingston has not served dim sum since mid-2004.

While there are some decent maps in the book, such out of date information makes me wonder when the author actually visited Jamaica.

Take "JAMAICA GIRL" Along.......2005-10-09

"Lonely Planet" is great as a travel guide, but if you want a great read on your trip to Jamaica, take "JAMAICA GIRL" along with you. Jon Michael Miller's novel shows you the real Jamaica, far behind the walls of the famous all-inclusive resorts. You will see the struggles and the joys of a wonderful people, as well as meet Rosalind Juliet Mitchell, a fabulously brave and resourceful progagonist, on her search for love and freedom. It is by far the best book about Jamaica I have ever read. A wonderful story, suspenseful, sexy, funny, disturbing, and quite moving. Wonderful characters. And a great message about the power of love to transform one's existence. A great read for a vacation, or, even, a vacation in itself.

An HONEST guide book, indeed!!.......2004-04-12

What can I say? This is the greatest book that I've ever seen on traveling to Jamaica.

Within the first 100 pages of this book is accurate, important information about everything you could imagine about Jamaica. I loved that this information came first, before all of the "guide" things. I beleive that within these important pages of this book, the reader can determine if indeed Jamaica is a place they might want to go to, or stay away from.

If you read this book and still have questions about Jamaica, you need to read the book again because its ALL in here.

I have used four different guidebooks in two trips to Jamaica in the past two years. This Lonely Planet guide is clearly the most thorough and comprehensive (although the others are more than adequate). I can't think of anything of significance that was left out, and I've been studying the island for 30 years now. That said, it's probably far more than most tourists to Jamaica will need or want. The vast majority go to major resorts for fun in the sun. If that is your intent, then this book will be very helpful to you in planning your trip--choosing a place to go, places to eat and stay, and things to do-but so will the other guides. This is, however, the guide par excellence for those who want to know as much as possible about Jamaica, its people and culture, and who will be traveling around the island, perhaps to areas remote from the tourist industry, for an extended period of time. It will be invaluable for anyone who is moving to Jamaica and working there-such as missionaries, teachers, embassy staff, and Peace Corps volunteers.

The guide starts with an excellent 66 page overview of the island that you should read before you go. It also has a great 47 page history of popular music. And lots of beautiful color photographs. Followed by detailed information on where to go, where to stay, and what to do in every area of the country. Along with priceless sage advice on the local culture. The author really knows his way around the country and the people. It can be a tricky place to be, and most tourists don't venture far from the resort areas, so if you are going cross-country on your own then you should definitely read what he has to say.

Because it is so comprehensive and informative, I can also recommend this guide as a beginning reference on Jamaica. I don't know any other book where you can learn so much about the country between two covers.

INFORMATIVE AND BEAUTIFUL TOO.......2000-05-05

I had purchased a Pisces Book once before so was expecting the same informative style. The Smit's book surpassed my expectations. The descriptions of the dive sites are very complete with specific details about how you should approach each site. For example: when giving information about one site they said, "...keep your fins away from the bottom because it is covered with fine sediment, which when disturbed will immediately reduce visibility."

I found the section on Potentially Hazardous Marine Life fascinating and quite blood chilling. The method for staring down a barracuda was gripping but not something I want to try.

The photographs are absolutely marvelous. They really make the book a treasure.

The Essential Pomeranian, while only 92 pages long, contains a great deal of useful information for someone that is either a first-time dog owner or just new to the breed. But even if the information is already known, the pictures alone almost make the book worth the purchase price! It is full of adorable color illustrations. This is a wonderful "story" book - it covers the story of the pottery and the people who helped make it what it is today. It's a well-written, easy-to-read accounting - I read it in one sitting! It's not a complete reference of pieces created by the pottery, but it has wonderful full color photos of many items which are worth the price alone!

I have been collecting Hagen Renaker for 30 years and this book still added to what I knew about the factory and it's artists. The text is well written and informative and the pictures are luscious! It's a definite must have for the Hagen Renaker collector.

Hagen-Renakers have been a passion of mine since I saw my first "Forever Amber" in the early 1970s. Later, I was driven to collect information on H-R and that drive resulted in the H-R Handbook in 1989 and the Charlton Guide in 1999. To me, Nancy's book transcends the mere information-gathering and tells the Hagen-Renaker story - the whys and wherefores of this bunch of people expressing themselves in clay. They made so many things - goofy, beautiful, bizarre - you just knew something special had to be going on there. The colors and detail of some pieces is just amazing and Nancy's book shows that.

I hate to admit it, but sometimes I dream of H-Rs and I absolutely got gooseflesh when I read of Pat Kristof still dreaming of being "at the pottery after all those years." This book is that dream.

I've bought and borrowed numerous books regarding perennials. None has been so complete and well illustrated. Each plant species has varieties listed as well as planting, mulching, pruning, dividing techniques and advice. As an avid perennial gardener, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Kudos to the authors!

While perhaps suitable for a beginning gardener, this book omits many useful and common species while including obscure cultivars that are virtually indistinguishable from one another. Important cultural facts are often missing or buried in the cookie-cutter approach to each species. This book has no index, the omission of which may point to hasty editing. More experienced gardeners should look at books written by Steven Still.

If all women were meant to serve multiple men as slaves.... why is there a near perfect ratio of 1:1 male to female?

And if women are naturally submissive then why are there feminists?

I seriously think that men are the last people who should be deciding whether or not us women are submissive or not.

Incredibly disagree with the FBRobertson "fbrobertson2" guy...it just seems as if his interpretation of the bible is for his own means...so that it puts him somehow at the top of the social ladder a non-homosexual man.... a coincidence that he agree with this so called 'philosophy?'?

In my opinion (which I am so gracious to write as opposed to stating it as a definite fact as others) this book is not 'bad.' the idea that's all women are submissive deep down...is rubbish and isn't backed my much evidence.

However if you can ignore all the illegitimate rubbish throughout the book and simple focus on the actually sexual acts, then you are presented with a fair few ideas that, providing both partners agree, may provide some sexual enjoyment. :)

Its not really that bad of a book..........2003-05-01

First of all, yes the book contains Dominance and submission fantasies to explore with your love. Saying this, to those who are dismayed by the book and its explorations...if you dont like that kind of stuff? Why the heck did you buy the book? If you are a vanilla or just afraid of showing yourself as a true Man and a True woman...whether a woman who is considered as a Free Woman or a slave...then dont buy the book!

Saying that, I myself have loved this book from the beginning. I am a huge fan of the Gor novels and their philosophy toward life and relationships. Unlike the politically correct or the feminist fools, I am proud to be a MAN. I am as a Man a Master of myself my relationships and my fate. A woman is a natural submissive, unlike those females who think and strive to be men...only to fail at being what they are genetically and psychologically. Not that I am sexist, I am a realist and I am an "actualist", that being, someone who understands what is actual about the Male/female dichotomy.

If you want a realistic book that talks plainly and truthfully about being a Man and a woman, unlike your John Grays or Phillip McWhatever his name is...then get this book and BE A MAN!

John Norman is obviously whipped. Why the heck else would he write a supposed "spice-up-your-love-life" book--and make it sound just like the Gor series?

Seriously, though, not only is the poor guy obsessed with the entire maledom/femsub thing--which is exactly why I suspect that he's "whipped--he thinks that *everyone's* fantasies involve bondage--which simply isn't so.

Norman's half-baked psychosexual philosophy is neither here nor there, but it doesn't extend to the ability to write sex guides. The highly touted "fantasies" typically run to a half a page. "I-Am-A-Slave-Girl Fantasy" = tie a naked gal up, intimidate her some, have her call the male "Master," take things from there. Period. This wasn't breaking startling new ground in 1974, and it sure tells no one anything now.

The previous reviewers failed to mention that 49 of the 50 listed fantasies are male-dominant (the exception being I-Am-A-Slave-Guy, with the sneering statement that some of us just can't manage to be manly 24-7). Norman states that all women are submissive boy toys deep down (repeatedly and at tedious length), and that any assertion to the contrary by the little darlings is self-evident denial. There's certainly a segment of the male population who would love to believe this, but I haven't found many women who admit to craving chaining and whippings if only a man would notice them.

20 years of erotic ideas and enjoyment.......1998-12-14

I bought the original publication in 1976. It captured my imagination more than any book I have read since. It is much lighter than what Anne Rice has written and safer than Topping From Below.. It helps define how and why women would buy into the whole Gorian idea. There are many suggestions of ways to live and play in a sane and fun way.. Excellent section on garments, bondage, and how to create a whole set of worlds for just the two partners that make life more interesting and the bedroom a playground that can stay forever new and exciting. If your partner isn't sure this is the way they want to go, try sharing it with them. You both maybe surprised at the fun that you hadn't thought of before. No one will like all the scenes suggested, but pick and choose what is right for both of you.

As the United States faces what many see as another lackluster election in November 2000, John B. Judis's The Paradox of American Democracy addresses the decline of public participation in national politics over the course of the 20th century. American political life, Judis writes, was never strictly a contest between popular and wealthy special-interest groups. Since the 1970s, though, think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute have pursued their own economic interests by forging links with reactionary populist groups like the Moral Majority, silencing progressive voices less able to present their interests amidst the onslaught of corporate propaganda. Public policy, Judis feels, is now formed primarily by lobbyists rather than those concerned about the broader public welfare.

Paradox presents a detailed portrait of how organized political blocs, independent public policy foundations, and the federal government have interacted over the last 100 years, and how the relationship has been eroded by corporate priorities. While his facts are correct, Judis's fondness for the hegemonic social order of FDR's New Deal and Lyndon Johnson's Great Society might raise objections from sympathetic readers who feel that vital leftist energy was co-opted by post-Fordism, not enabled by it. The link between activists' declining access to power and the dwindling electoral turnout could also be made more explicit. The most compelling theme of this book to me was its historical explanation of why there seems to be no informed/reasoned middle ground in politics today, which is something I find particularly mystifying and frustrating. The history and mechanics Judis describes of how disinterested elites have disappeared while letterhead advocacy groups have become rampant is very plausible, especially with the numerous detailed examples he cites.

The book might lose a little gas after the Reagan years, but I thought that was OK since Clinton+ has been dissected a million different ways and I wasn't looking for another take on that.

The book also serves as a valuable field guide to policy groups of different stripes. If you are a little fuzzy on the difference between the Heritage Foundation and the Brookings Institute (as I admit I was), then that's a big part of the problem Judis is describing.

A cogent explanation of how we got here..........2002-07-15

Judis is particularly smart about the 1970s, which he characterizes as a moment of conservative and corporate backlash. He suggests that if you follow the money, and the think-tanks, you can see (in part) how and why the right was able to triumph politically in a degraded public sphere once we got to the 1980s and 1990s. The name of the game for them has been propaganda--"Trust us, Mr. Working Man, welfare cheats are what ail you. That and capital gains taxes that are too high."--and they've done it well. Hell, with all the Scaife, Olin, Cato, Heritage, AEI, and CEI doublespeak and disinformation spewed out over the course of the last 3 decades, it's a wonder any of us have any sense left at all. Hopefully, with the eruption of a new corporate scandal every other day in 2002 (nearly all of which have links to the "screw-the-poor-and-the-middle-class / but-fatten-the-rich-and-the-corporations" Bush-Cheney Administration) people are finally beginning to wise up...

Awful.......2001-10-31

Do yourself a favor and avoid this book. Mr. Judis fails miserably to explain why political cynicism seems to be at an all-time high. A devout leftist, Judis relies upon formulaic left wing claptrap to support his thesis that high minded elitists are no longer looking out for the interest of working people, but rather their own self interest. He somehow manages to strech out liberal 'bumper sticker' philosophy for 306 pages, most of it mind numbingly innane. This book is an utter failure, particularly given that his book on WF Buckley was surprisingly neutral and honest. This is the type of drivel you would expect to see from some nutjob writing for Mother Jones, not the New Republic. What a shame.

Great in understanding America's (corrupt) democracy.......2000-06-01

I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anybody interested in American history and politics. John B. Judis gives a historic account of how our democracy has been damaged by big money and irresponsible elites, focusing from the progressieve era to today. The book is an easy read, and Judis makes his points well understood. He analyzes how different elites and special interest groups have functioned in America.

The chapters "Business and the Rise of K Street," and "Triumph of Conservatives," were very interesting and thought provoking. Judis gives a closer and infromative look at how political action committees and conservative groups have contributed huge amounts of money to politicians, and how they recently dramatically increased their influence in governments decisions.

The last two chapters are also good in explaining how changes in big business influenceing government even more in the 70's and 80's is hard to shake when dealing with a reform agenda. It is chalk full of statistics that are astounding, and are attributed to respectable sources: PAC's gave 72% of their money to Republicans during the last six weeks of teh 1978 elections.

A problem with this book though is that it blames the Republicans too much when talking about the lack of public participation in politics. I guess that was expected though considering that Mr. Judis is a senior editor of "The New Republic" (a liberal magazine), although he does not seem to be a fan of Clinton. All together this book is very informative and holds your interest. Along with recommending this book, I will recommend reading Jim Hightower's "If the Gods had meant us to vote they would have given us Candidates." It bashed both Republicans and Democrats, and is comparable to this book, however discusses more recent issues.

This book informs us on the ever-changing-postion government, elites, and society has had over time, and explains how American democracy has evolved to today's current corrupt system. John B. Judis also gives us hope and discusses how our democracy can be corrected.

Eric Ayisi cites his observations of race relations within American academia and how they compare to those in other countries, such as Africa and England. A native of the western African nation of Ghana, Ayisi went to England in 1950 to study, where he encountered little to no hardships because of his race. He returned to Ghana to teach at the University of Ghana. Eventually, his career led him to the United States. It is here that he encountered prejudice previously unknown to him. Through the years, his department at a prestigious university recommended a non-retention contract, but his credentials, performance, support from some fair-minded high officials and the intervention of the NAACP helped him retain his position. Today, Ayisi sees great promise for the improvement of race relations in the future. This is his story.
