A useful guide, particularly for the Southwest. Could use more information about mass transit.
Only for first-time visitors who want to be told exactly what to do........2007-05-07
This book is one person's opinion of what is worth seeing in England; it includes *only* those things, and nothing else. A full 24% of the book is taken up with London. That section includes helpful bus info that most guidebooks don't include, but, oddly, not a tube map so that you can think about connections ahead of time. Also lacking is a single map of the whole of London. Instead, there is a color map in the front of the book of only the most central part of central London, and then multiple small hand-drawn maps of individual areas of London. To figure out how to get from one place to another involves putting together a number of different little maps. In addition to the partial London map, there are maps of Bath and all of England at the beginning of the book; otherwise, all the maps are small and hand-drawn, which I found annoying. As examples of what you *won't* find in this book, there is nothing at all on Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham or Exeter, just to name a few. Personally, I would prefer to pay a few dollars more for a more comprehensive guide.
I will never trust Rick Steves again........2007-04-17
Several years ago, my sister and I traveled to London relying largely on Rick Steves' then-current guide to England. Our problems started with our hotel near Victoria Station, a place Steves had praised to the skies; it turned out to be the worst so-called hotel we had ever seen in our lives, a filthy, unkempt, knocked-together place with SPIKES (not bars) in the windows and a venal staff utterly uninterested in the comfort of the guests. This was only the first of many pieces of bum advice that Mr. Steves gave us through his guide. I will never again trust any travel advice given by Mr. Steves. I would, however, like to know how this self-styled Emperor of Travel makes his way through Europe with no clothes.
Where are the coasts?.......2007-03-09
I was a little disappointed when I received this book. I bought last year's Rick Steve's Great Britain and found that he really skipped a lot of area that I was interested in....so, I bought this one and discovered he basically followed the same path. The first 150 or so pages focus on London. If I wanted a guide on London, I would've bought one. I think Bill Bryson's humorous account (Notes From a Small Island)gave me more of a feel for England.
That said, the book gives LOADS of travel tips and insight that these books are known for.
Great guide for first-timers.......2007-01-04
Neither my wife nor I had been to England before, and we took this as our only guidebook. We stayed in the Southeast (near Dover), the Cotswalds, and in London over the course of a week, and this book had more than enough information and insight for our brief trip. The advice is very candid and straightforward, and I will use it again when I go back. The only caveat is probably that there is not a ton of detailed information about London (Steves has another book for London) in this book, so if that is where you'll do most of your visiting, you might want to pick up a more specific guide.

I am a secondary education history major and I use this book in my US history class. I find it to be simply outstanding. It reads like a novel and not like a text book. This is a must have for any history buff.

In an era when streetcars wound their way down Vancouver's streets, a ferry linked the cash-strapped municipality of West Vancouver to the city, and the Vancouver School Board was pushing for racially segregated schools, Hok Yat Louie was teaching his eight-year-old son Tong how to write invoices at his grocery stand. Because of the political climate of the day, doing business in British Columbia was not easy for Hok Yat Louie or his sons - especially after Hok Yat began his wholesale business, H.Y. Louie Co. Ltd, in 1927. At the time, it is unlikely that anyone could have predicted that within a few decades Tong would go from being a Chinese grocer's son to one of the wealthiest businessmen to ever influence British Columbia's economy - and its culture.
Tong Louie not only went on to expand his father's business but he become a bridge between the Chinese and non-Chinese communities in Vancouver. His business savvy lead him to owning London Drugs, IGA and Dominion stores across British Columbia, while his vision of a multicultural society lead him to be among the first Chinese-Canadians to move out of Chinatown and into a white neighborhood where his dignity and quiet determination gradually gained him acceptance. In later life, he donated generously to various causes and institutions, including Simon Fraser University and St. Paul's Hospital.
