Customer Reviews:
Excellent Travel Guide.......2005-09-11
This guidebook exceeded my expectations. Appropriate detail, lots of history, wonderful dining and lodging suggestions. I can definitely credit this book with contributing to making our recent Door County vacation a hit. We stayed in an amazing bed and breakfast and every meal we had was delicious, which is not an easy feat considering we had never been in Door County before. I only disagree with a few of the suggestions.
Don't Travel Wisconsin Without It.......2003-12-15
If you are coming to Wisconsin bring this book with you and if you are a resident keep it in your glovebox. It covers all the obvious attractions as well as a wonderful selection of off the beaten path destinations. Huhti also give us heaps of interesting historical background and his love of the Badger State shines clearly through all 570 pages.
Even natives will love Huhti's Wisconsin.......2003-03-26
This book is packed with history, geography, politics, art, and more. It will suprise and delight any native. Meticulously edited, all contact info. I used is up-to-date. After a few months, you find yourself laughing with Huhti, fighting with him, and agreeing with him; but most of all, you are awed by this native's depth of knowledge. He does use some obscure vocabulary. It's inconvienent, as most travelers I know don't carry a dictionary. More than a travel guide, it's an achievement.
Traveling in Wisconsin? Don't leave home without this!.......2001-06-05
Moon Handbooks: Wisconsin is a 570 page travel guide to the Badger state and designed specifically for the adventurous traveler seeking to sample its wealth of diverse cultural and ethnic festivities, events, communities, and cuisines. Now in a completely updated and expanded second edition, Moon Handbooks: Wisconsin is packed with invaluable, descriptive information ideal for planning everything from a simple daytrip to an elaborate and extended vacation itinerary. If you are traveling in Wisconsin, don't leave home without your very own copy of Moon Handbooks: Wisconsin!
Wisconsin: From A to Z.......2000-12-15
Want to know where the talking cow statue is? How about where to find some of the state's best pie, or scenery, or the sites with great local atmosphere? Huhti's book offers it all, thoroughly covering every region in the state--pointing out highlights and lowlights throughout Wisconsin. It's all interspersed with historical tidbits and local color, providing a wonderfully in-depth guide to the Badger State. I write a statewide travel column and it is an invaluable tool. Defintely recommended!

My "Titanic" Book Report by Ryan Pearl.......2006-02-15
In the first couple chapters, the book tells how wonderful the Titanic was. Very wealthy people were on the Titanic. People asked members of the crew if the boat could sink. The crew all said no it could not sink. The ship was built with the best of everything.
The story of the Titanic begins in Southampton, England and was to end in New York. Unfortunately, most of the story takes place after the Titanic hit an iceberg around Iceland in the Atlantic Ocean.
The ship hit an iceberg and began to sink. There were lifeboats on the ship but not nearly enough for everyone. Women and children were allowed on the lifeboats before the men. Wealthy people in first class got to leave before the poor people in third class. Many families did not want to be separated from each other and some men were chicken and wanted to get on the lifeboats before all the women and children were safe. In some cases the men were able to leave with the children and the mother stayed on board.
There were 2200 people on board the ship. In the end only 713 people survived. Over 1500 people died when the ship sank.
I love this book!.......2005-11-28
I really enjoyed reading this book because I like reading about the Titanic.

Customer Reviews:
Caring Author, a hands on book that works!.......2005-04-16
I started reading the Natural Dog about two years ago.
I have a fourteen your old coon hound and he was experiencing
problems associated with aging. I found that the book's chapter on the aging dog is so valuable. I implemented a new diet for my dog, based on the book and my dog now has so much more energy. We take nice long walks every day and he is quite playful. I had brought my dog to a traditional vet a year before and the doctor only recommended surgery for his problems with walking. The book offers caring alternative solutions to dog care that many people just do not know about. Based on the author's suggestions I have given my dog glucosamine, treated his eyes with the herb eurphrasia, and have seen all the positive results the author describes. I love this book and recommend it often to friends. The author writes in an easy manner and her love for dogs is obvious as you turn the pages.
Shor's Criticisms are Unfounded.......2003-12-18
Shor's negative Library Journal review of this book cannot be taken seriously. A conventional vet, Shor obviously has a vested interest in dog owners not empowering themselves with a holistic approach to care. His criticisms are unfounded. Nux vomica, which Shor fearfully labels as strychinine is a homeopathic remedy that contains no measurable amount of the poison. His reluctance to feed dogs raw meat ignores the fact that dogs in nature consume raw meat, including carrion, bacteria and all. Let's not even consider what goes into most commercial dog foods. His final example of a contradictory statement concerning not bathing dogs yet allowing them to swim doesn't point out a contradiction at all: the last time I checked, dogs swim in water while they are bathed with water plus soap and/or chemicals that strip their hair of its natural oils.
Wonderful overview of holistic care for dogs!.......1999-02-02
As the proud owner of a fourteen year old poodle named Murphy and a roaming tom-cat named Spencer, I appreciate a book with a holistic approach toward animal care. As with all older pets, my dog Murphy has experienced his fair share of medical problems and I don't like inundating him with prescription medication on a regular basis. The Natural Dog gives me a variety of natural and safe ways to treat Murphy's ailments, and provides methods to keep him healthy! This book is informative and entertaining, providing pet owners with an A-Z guide on common dog problems and their natural solutions. The Natural Dog will assist anyone who wishes to become acquainted with holistic medicine for pets.
Holistic Dog Care at its easiest.......1998-02-03
After Dr. Pitcarin's Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats came a plethora of natural guides for animals. This book followed its predecessor The Natural Cat. This book is an easy to read holistic care guide, of which I always recommend in conjuction with Dr Pitcairn's guide for new dog owners. It is easy to read for the pet owner overhwelmed by the detailed knowledge of Dr Pitcairn's guide. With both books paired together, I feel any dog owner seriously interested in holistic pet care will be highly informed and motivated.
Book Description
Whether the piece is from the Georgian, Regency, William IVth, Victorian, or Edwardian era, this thoroughly updated guide from Miller’s lists furniture arranged by type and use—tables, seats, desks—with each section containing fact boxes filled with practical information on individual items and guidance on changing design features. There is an illustrated key to recognizing different woods, from native varieties such as pine, sycamore and birch to imported species such as mahogany, kingwood and tulipwood. Special features include children’s furniture; furniture details and decoration; and caring for your furniture, with tips on how to restore damaged and discolored wood.

A Perfect Primer/Companion.......2005-12-26
This is the perfect companion for those making their first tentative steps into the world of antique furniture. To the uninitiated, distinguishing between Georgian, Regency, William IV, Victorian, and Edwardian-era antiquities is a daunting task, well nigh impossible without spirited coaching, and that is where this book comes into play. Leading the neophyte gently by the hand through this labyrinth of terms, dates, woods, prices, et al, this book is replete with information for the would-be antique purchaser. Is it a late regency or Victorian chiffonier? A quick look at this tome will immediately put the question to rest. Auction prices rarely fluctuate precipitously over the course of several years, so this reference book should stay a pace of the market trend for a while, and for those wishing to do a great deal of antique purchasing, $29 is a ridiculously small amount of money to pay for 400 pages of extremely useful information. The Miller series of books are a wonderful staging ground from which to embark upon a lifetime's worth of adventures in the world of antiques, and my word of praise does Judith Miller's series small justice.
Informative Guide.......2005-04-09
I'm not always crazy about these guides, their usefullness is for such a short duration, but I must say that this one is quite well done. It gives you a good idea of what the pieces of this style are going for at the time and what is selling and what is not..again at the time of the auction. The book does a nice job, better than most Millers guides, of giving many examples of different pieces of furniture in each style. The biggest problem with these guides are that they are a bit expensive and obviously go out of date quickly. Once they are more than a few years old they are really not of much use, other than to admire the beautiful furniture in the pictures. Having said that the book is well put together and the pictures are quite nice, though I wish more where in color.

Customer Reviews:
Who is the editor??.......2006-01-22
My order said the editor was Cathy Barash, the book says Eleanor Lewis wrote it and Kate Carter Frederick was the editor.
I should have known better than to expect BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS CONTAINER GARDENS would have much of interest to me, but I try to keep an open mind. Unlike many of the "garden magazines" BG relies not on expert garden writers but on its own staff to produce garden copy. Furthermore, the photos in the articles mostly depict overly zestful compositions that distract rather than soothe, which makes me wonder how photography is handled.
In spite of its overall shortcomings (who is in charge? who is writing, i.e. offering advice?), each section of the book has some strengths. In rather detailed chapters, the text discusses, accompanied by photos, the creation of various planting arrangements.
For example, in the "Shallow Bowls" section we are shown which plants to add to the arrangement, how to select and fill the bowl with the planting medium, and how to arrange the plants. In this case an aster, a sedum, a mum, a fern, a variegated ivy, and an ornamental cabbage. Interestingly, although the text explains that the project is "easy" and the time involved is "1 hour" and the zones where this arrangement will work are "3-10", it does not explain that this is a fall arrangement that it can withstand some dryness but will succumb if over-watered, that it will have full sun requirements, and that it will probably not be easy to locate the listed plants "in bloom", as the text suggests, in the early summer months. Rather the text says you should "engage in a bit of advanced planning" and note when plants are at their peak (fall plants peak in autumn). In other words, this may not be an "easy" project for a beginner, but might prove easier for someone like myself who has been gardening a while.
The next few pages of this section suggest various shallow bowl arrangements for different times of the year (although most shown are for spring), which is useful for someone who has been gardening a while and may not have tried primulas in pots (although I have done pansies, arrangements of sedum, and combinations of tulips).
So, the question is who is the target audience? Is it the novice, the intermediate, or the old-timer? I think the novice could use the book, but don't expect it to tell you everything. You might want to buy McGee and Stuckey's BOUNTIFUL CONTAINER as your first book. Buy this one for the photos which aren't all bad.
IDEAS, IDEAS, IDEAS!.......2005-08-28
I bought a few different container gardening books through Amazon and this one is my favorite for creative container display ideas. I appreciated that the full color photographs showed different arrangements of containers in yards, on decks, stairs, foyers, and under windows. There were also great tips on creating or modifying 'found' objects into planting containers. The information in the individual plant care section was sparse. However, but there was a key to foliage and fruit colors that is important in making beautiful displays. The strengths of this book are the ideas and photographs. Sometimes a good picture is the only motivation you need to get started!
Excellent container garden ideas.......2002-06-06
Of all the container garden books I read this spring, this was one of my favorites. The pictures are excellent. The book has "recipes" for containers, plant ideas for different kinds of containers, and also touches a bit on water gardening in containers. Its an all around great book for a beginning container gardener.
