great book detailing not just roads, but local custom and color for the mid-atlantic area from PA down to the Carolinas and eastern Tennessee.

numerouse routes from a central point in each region are detailed and the local dining, lodging, and other points of interest are detailed in an interesting style of writing.

useful for anyone who wants to tour the mid-atlantic region and take their time doing it...

I just finished a ride of a little over 1000 miles from my home in NJ to and through WV and VA. I used this book to guide me on some really terrific roads and through some truly beautiful areas. This was the first long, extended ride I've ever taken and it was in large measure due to the "encouragement" expressed through this well written resource. If you're thinking of traveling through the Appalachians then I would recommend that you purchase and pour through this well written book before you go.

Invaluable!.......2007-06-10

I just got back from a near-1000 mile trip through the Appalachians. I used this book to guide me through some thoroughly fascinating and beautiful areas -- the author, Dale Coyner, has create a terrific resource! I am not exaggerating when I say that VA Route 39 has changed my view of the eastern United States (I lived in the West -- Alaska, Utah, and Arizona -- until 2000). I'm sure I won't be the first, but I've set a goal to do all 36 rides in the book.

I showed this to the clerk at the bookstore at the Peaks of Otter wayside on the Blue Ridge Parkway. She's a rider, so she took the name of the book down with considerable enthusiasm and pledged to talk to the manager about stocking the book in the store. It seems strange NOT to have your book on the shelves in such a rider's paradise!

I worked in the motorcycle industry for over 10 years as a service manager and still ride with all my old co-workers.

We thought we knew all the best roads in our neck of the woods but we were wrong.

We pick a route, get into the middle of nowhere and then get lost.

This book has filled in the blanks for us.

A must have if you're a real rider.

For me there are three parts to a good trip - the preparation, the adventure itself, and then the memories. This book has helped me a long way in achieving all these pleasure points. The maps and text are wonderful; the crafty photo's with tasty captions peppered appropriately throughout this guide left my partner (who does not accompany me) recommending more sights than I could handle. A keeper, if not just for that.

Guidelines and ideas for new history teachers.......2007-07-24

I saw the 1 star rating for this book and felt the need to add my own review. I used this book (although minimally) for a class as a soon to be history teacher. If you are new to teaching history it does offer some guidelines and ideas that seem reasonable. Yes, it has a common sense approach, and can leave you with a "duh" feeling, but I did not find it belittling perhaps since I am looking at it from a beginner's perspective. I liked that the ideas and models of lesson plans were relatively short (one or two pages) and understandable. Are there better books out there? Probably, but it was worth a look to me.

stale and uptight.......2006-02-01

Fred Drake attempts to re-invent history teaching for history teachers. In the course of his book, Drake labors extensively in what appears to be elementary, if not kindergarten concepts. Furthermore, he engages in hand-holding and any current teacher would feel belittled after reading only one or two chapters in this book that Drake considers to be his contribution to the content and pedagogy of teaching history. SAVE your money and buy a book that is useful.

Kovels New Dictionary of Marks.......2007-10-12

This is a good resource book. It has it's limitations, but I use it almost daily. I look up alot of ceramics marks, and I find the large majority of them in this Kovels book. It is great if you are looking for a specific makers mark, or decoratoras mark. The limitation is that there is no way to comprehensively view all marks from one particular maker. If you have a few treasures that you want to accurately identify, then it is very good. Don't get me wrong, I haven't found every mark I look for. But I haven't found a Marks reference that I do. This book provides a good clean and easy format to locate the mark I need, and quickly.

Also, if you are looking for back ground info on the company, this isn't the book for you. While the Kovel's do an excellent job of showing literal thousands of easy to find marks, thats all they show. All in all a highly recommended resource. Any serious ceramics collector, dealer, or dedicated flea market/yard saler should have a copy.

Bought this as a gift for my daughter and she has really enjoyed it's contents. Now she can see if the "Junk and/or Antiques" she has purchased has any real value!!

Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks Pottery & Porcelain 1850 to the Present.......2007-02-11

I haven't been happy with this book since I purchased it. Haven't found one mark from any of the pottery or china I have from this book. Only one or maybe two examples of the companies which made the pottery but not the marks. For example I can't even find the simple "Anchor" from Anchor Hawking Co.(There are plenty of other anchors). I have a very nice Blue "Old Fashion"/juice glass fron A.H. but I have never seen one in blue. Looked it up and could not find MARK in this book. I was very surprised. I've been thinking about purchasing the Second Edition of Kovels' book, but been holding back... Can anyone tell me if it is better or if it's just me, I hope..Mary, techmom@usamedia.tv (No Solicitors Please! Only those wanting to talk about this book please reply. NO SPAMMERS!!)

Good reference book.......2007-02-03

Marks on pottery have always been of interest to me. Some are obvious and well-known and others obscure. Couldn't find all the marks I was looking for. Still a good book to have.

Great reference............2007-01-10

This book has been a great reference for finding pottery marks. This volume does not hold a list of all markings ever used, but it comes closer than any others I have used. My only complaint of this book is that it does not group multiple marks that a particular potter may have used over the years. Instead it groups them by design not by maker.
Still this is the most comprehensive markins book I have found in an affordable price range. Well worth the investment.

Exactly what I was expecting. A bit difficult to understand at first, but once you understand the layout it really makes it easy to use for reference.

As with the Kovels other books, this reference is very exhaustive and complete. There are, perhaps, some mistakes, but given the volume of information here that is to be expected. I find I reach for this book first when I'm trying to identify a piece of this age group, and usually find what I'm looking for here. Easy to travel with, from antique shop to auction. A good buy.

Too many mistakes.......1999-11-22

Rather coplete book but-alas-full of mistakes in entries concerning German and Austrian porcelain.Take for example the Meissen porcelain:the authors put together in one large pile Meissen proper,Thieme factory,Fr.Hirsch,Helena Wolfsohn and other factories,though these are absolutely different things.The authors should make a bit of research before starting the project:What amazes me is that this is the 46th edition of the book and nobody ever corrected those mistakes.

Good research, accurate information, and voluminous (if not exhaustive) representation of marks. Brief yet succinct information identifying maker, circa date and geographical location are offered with marks. Don't expect a good read or scholarly discourse. Small and light; easy to take on the road.

Deciphering dating systems.......2000-01-20

This guide has a key to the dating systems used by the major manufacturers of pottery and porcelain. In fact, it was the only guide at my local library that had such a key. It's certainly worth purhcasing for the dating systems only. However, it is also a good reference for the collector.

Gardeners move to a different rhythm than the rest of the world, taking cues from the seasons rather than the dates on a calendar. Most gardeners remember first and last frost dates more readily than birthdays and mark Halloween according to which leaves have already fallen rather than by the fact that it's October 31. This is why books that are written seasonally, month by month, such as Christopher Lloyd's Gardening Year, are the most useful and enjoyable of all garden books. They correspond to our own rhythms and to the way we see the world.

Lloyd has lived at Great Dixter in East Sussex, England, all of his life, and he is now nearly 80. In his new book he tells the story of his garden's emergence from dormancy in the early spring, its high summer glories, and its gradual, colorful autumn decline. No one else writes about their garden so intimately, personally, engagingly, but having written a weekly column for Country Life magazine since 1963, Lloyd has had plenty of practice. Lloyd is famous for his tropical garden, as he was one of the first to extensively use exotic plants in a temperate garden. In his August chapter, he recounts ridding his garden of roses, replacing them with cannas, bananas, brugmansias, and dahlias in a riot of hot colors.

Another of Lloyd's enthusiasms is cooking from the garden, and he writes of sowing lettuces successively to provide greens from spring to October and gives advice about growing fruit and tomatoes. He also loves ornamental grasses, water gardening, vines, and flower borders. All the monthly tasks and triumphs of making and caring for a complicated garden are captured here in color photographs and in Lloyd's opinionated and knowledgeable prose. "I am a bit snooty about escallonias," he begins, and then goes on to tell which are worth letting into your garden. Louis Hughes was born a slave in Virginia and at age 12 was sold away from his mother, whom he never saw again. After a few interim owners, he was sold to a wealthy slaveowner who had a home near Memphis and plantation nearby in Mississippi. Hughes lived there as a house servant until near the end of the Civil War, when he escaped to the Union lines and then, in a daring adventure with the paid help of two Union soldiers, returned to the plantation for his wife. The couple made their way to Canada and after the war to Chicago and Detroit, eventually settling in Milwaukee. There Hughes became relatively comfortable as a hotel attendant and as an entrepreneur laundry operator. Self-educated and eloquent, Hughes wrote and privatel published this memoir in 1897. It is a compelling account, by turns searing and compassionate about slavery, slaves, and slaveowners. No reader can be unmoved as Hughes tells about his five attempts to escape, about having to stand by helplessly while watching his wife whipped, of the joy of finally meeting again the brother whom he had not seen since they were little children in Virginia. Yet he also writes knowingly about the economics of slavery and the day-to-day business of the plantation, and the glass-house relationships between slaves and masters. Hughes died in Milwaukee in 1913.
