Balanced Indeed.......2006-07-17

This text is an excellent introduction on this hopeless conflict. The authors do a fine job at tracing the history of this important conflict and giving the views of all sides involved. They give the major motivations of the Jews, Arabs, and major powers. A great feature was the inclusion of important historical documents such as letters of correspondence, white papers, statements, UN resolutions, and conference agreements. Only an extremist would have major problems with this book.

This book really summarizes the issues. I took several classes in the Spring of 06 on the Israeli-Arab conflict, and this was one of the best I read. Straight to the point, gives the important facts, and not biased.

For anyone interested in but unfamiliar with the detailed history and politics underlying the Arab-Israeli conflict, this thorough, scholarly and ambitious book is an excellent resource. If you aren't looking for all the details contained in a university textbook (complete with helpful maps and charts), you need not look further than the authors' Introduction, which presents an impressive and objective (rare, with this subject matter) overview of the multi-faceted considerations at play. If you are interested in the gritty details, this book is an unparalleled, concise, factual resource that must be on your shelf.

Nice introduction to subject but little detail.......2005-02-08

A concise history of the Arab Israeli Conflict 4th Ed. This book
is 379 pages published by Pearson Education. This details info about Islam and Judaisim and moves very fast into the 20th century where the crux of the conflict occured. It explains in detail but at the same time in general themes if that is possible. It is not as detailed as some books I have seen but it will do the reader very nicely who wants to go deeper than the surface about the inticacies of this conflict. The author does incorporate a stunning photo on the cover with the view of the Wailing Wall and Dome of the Rock. While documents are provided at the end of the chapters, there are some that I feel are essential to look at but are left out. While its a good book I am goign to rate this one average because I know of a much better book (Palestine and the Arab-Israeli Conflict by C.D. Smith).

Gives equal time to truth and lies.......2004-08-17

Let's start with the good things about this book. It has extensive quotes from no less than 67 documents that are relevant to the conflict, along with five tables, two charts, and 23 maps. And it does supply plenty of facts.

But this book completely misses the big picture, partially due to bias and partially due to poor scholarship. Absurdly irrelevant events, such as Arafat saying (for the thirtieth time) that he might do something to promote peace, are given star treatment when they deserve no mention at all. Major aspects of the conflict, such as the training of a generation of Arabs to be nihilistic antisemites, get little attention. It is taken for granted that small details about borders are the main issues: the possibility that the fight is over something as fundamental as human rights is discounted.

The authors explicitly realize that the task of the historian is to determine truth, explain it, weed out lies, infer as yet unknown details, and predict the future. They simply fail in that task. Not only do they implicitly accept many manifest fabrications (only to take out their suspicions on those who ought not be mistrusted without good cause), they often fail to distinguish between errors of judgment and outright malice. It is sad to see such problems with what could have been a far more useful reference.

This book is good. It provides some basic technics on methods of training. I personally prefered "how to help gun dogs train themselves". But, this was a good book with good training ideas.

This book is GREAT! My husband got me interested in training bird dogs after going on a quail hunt recently. I reviewed the books on Amazon that were available on the subject and chose this one to get an idea of what bird dog training would entail. I was skeptical that I could actually do this. I am hooked. This book made so much since to me! I am ready to get started with a puppy today. It is a lot of work I know but this book is an excellent way to get started. I know it will be an excellent resource after I get my pup. I have talked with a few folks that actually raise and train pointing dogs and they say I'm on the right track. I highly recommend this book.

I ordered this book in hopes of receiving an up to date training book. I was somewhat disappointed. The book looks like it is a new updated training book; and even states inside that it contains the authors older material with new updated training methods, but I found it to be only dated marerial. The pictures are from the 70's, and not good ones at that. I do feel like the methods would work for a person training a pointer; I was trying to obtain information in the training of a lab for upland game, and this book was lacking in that reguards. If you are looking for a newer material, you may want to check other sources. I am trying The Labrador Shooting Dog next.

Uncle Mattie hogwash.......2007-09-09

Uncle Mattie is a creep. I believe that dogs need training and different dogs need different things. I have 3 beautiful dachshunds. My older dachsie has back trouble and seisures. This is all part of what we think is bad breeding as the other 2 from different litters have zero health problems. My little girl is the sweetest thing in the world and so very well behaved. She would never bite and she is so patient and tolerant. Before I knew that she was having seisures at night, I discussed the problem with Uncle Mattie, (the creep) and he wanted me to fly my dog out to him so he could do some bruital training, (in his own words)with the dog. He stated that the dog was vicious and would get worse. What a creep. This dog would never hurt anyone or anything. What a putz! If I'd done what he asked I would have had to put the dog down. What a creep. OH yeah, and he said about 10 times, I should buy his book. IN HIS DREAMS!

I am glad this book was purchased at a discount because it is so painful to read. The information is good, but it is presented in such a way as to drive off any thinking person. The book is written as a set of dialogs between "Uncle Matty" Margolis and his irritatingly stupid students. If these are real people, it is scary to think that they might be allowed to vote and drive cars. I found myself focusing on this aspect more than listening to what Mr. Margolis had to say in each lesson, which when one takes out the dialog, are actually pretty helpful. I suppose the problem is that once you've written one dog training book, there's not much else you can say on the subject. However, "Uncle Matty" needs to keep writing books (it's a living), and this is the result.

I was in a hurry when I chose this book, now I wish I'd spent a little more time flipping through it. Each section begins with dialogue between Matty and the people/dogs he is working with. That part is completely pointless, and not even entertaining to me. Finally I realized I could skip half of each chapter to get to the meat. Still though, there is pointless ad-libbing through the actually instructions! By skipping, it only took me 45 minutes to get through this book. If you can manage that, there is some usefull advice. However, for such a thick book, I was very surprised that it only covered basic commands. I am still a little confused about how to train my dog! Definately not worthy of "The Ultimate Guide.." title.

I have 2 adult stubborn Bichons that I adopted as adults. They were never obedience trained as pups. This book addresses all of the issues I have with them. I'm currently in the process of following Joy's instructions and I'm amazed at the results. They are a work in progress but I see light at the end of the tunnel.

**Citywulf - Dogs don't think like humans. Joy only recommended grabbing the muzzle or scruff on the neck as last options. She also recommends increasing the confidence of timid dogs. She has advocated posturing and looks - hence the ALPHA***

I have mixed feelings about this book. She debunks many old ideas, and that's good. But using "Alpha" techniques on a dog has its risks. We do not want to raise wolves, we want to raise household companions. "Alpha" training includes using the hands to deliver such reprimands as scruff-shakes and muzzle holding. This can lead to a hand-shy dog more apt to use wolf-life reprimands on other dogs or even children considered subordinate. For timid and small dogs especially, I would recommend hands-free methods that rely on vocal tones, eye contact, and rewards.

Thank you Joy! I have been recommending this book to everyone I know who has a dog or is just thinking about it. If I had gotten it first I wouldn't have wasted money on any other dog books. Joy explains why dogs act the way they do and how their behavoir can be changed. I have seen many people mistreating their dogs in an attempt to disipline them. Or using strange, ineffective training techniques or no training at all. Simply the best there is...as the owner of a young Border Collie I don't know how we survived until we got this book.

I bought this book as a last resort on how to deal with my GSD/Malamute. She was a horrible mannered thing..lol. Now she is better behaved and minds. Decent info, but very poorly written.......2005-06-19

This book appears to have been written to mimic Uncle Matty's TV show (which I've never seen). This means lots of "cute" dialogue between Uncle Matty and the dog owners he's trying to help. They even write in "stage directions," that is, what's happening at the time.

And the instructions Uncle Matty gives us for the basic commands -- sit, stay, down, come, etc. -- are so complicated and convoluted, I'm not sure anyone could follow them! "Here's how you hold the leash; here's how you do your feet; don't say the dog's name; say the dog's name..." For crying out loud!

After I spent a couple days slugging through this book, I read "Good Dog: Positive Dog Training Techniques" by Deborah Wolfe in a couple hours. Her philosophy differs a bit from Uncle Matty -- no high falsetto, but lots of praise nonetheless, for example -- but the basics are there: punish only if the dog understands and is caught in the act; follow it up with praise; state commands only once... Her book was much more business-like and straightforward.

If you like Uncle Matty and want to read his cute-lame repartee wtih his guests, go ahead and read this book. But if you just want to get down to the business of actually training your dog, look elsewhere.

As a fan of 'Uncle Matty's" delightful television program, I was disappointed by this book. While the information about dog personalities and training techniques was good, the little anecdotes used to frame the information, which are touted as what makes it special, were very silly and unnatural. Uncle Matty and his collaborators need to get a better dialog writer.

Excellent for understanding how to teach your dog manners........1998-11-17

This is an excellent book for the average person to understand about teaching their pet household manners so the dog is much more enjoyable for the family. Matthew Margolis has such understanding of the differences between dog personalities and how they need to be handled in teaching technique. He uses praise rather than submission - therefore the dog responds because he 'wants to please his master'. He makes the statement that it is the owners that are usually at fault for bad behavior in our animals as they don't understand how to take charge. There is no such thing as an untrainable dog!

Best Conditioning Advice Ever.......2007-04-04

Yes, she spends a great deal of time chatting with growers, but this book has the BEST info on conditioning that you will find in a mass-market offering. Just as top chefs will alter recipes so that no one can duplicate their materpieces exactly, most flower growers are very tight-lipped about their secrets and will write pages and pages without giving specifics. Lee manages to extract wonderful information from her subjects.

Horticulture and marketing specifics are available in hundreds of other places: only here will you find a reliable guide to the best cut flowers and real, plant-specific conditioning practices. I used her advice for Cleome and won a blue ribbon at the county fair (the flowers lasted 2 weeks in the vase!). Not even remotely "amateurish." I've met this author in person and she has helped many become successful flower farmers, even from backyards. People learn in different ways and need different points to begin or to get re-inspired. Some learn best in "whole brain" ways from hearing another's story, and they have the brains and make-up to take it from there. Others are looking for left brain hemisphere technical analysis which is probably better found on the Internet. This book is perfect for many. Who is the grouchy sounding person from Ireland who sounds like he thinks all books are supposed to be custom written just for him, and if not, they're worthless to the world? Would he be interested in revealing his occupation in life and allowing himself to be publically ranked with one star which would help cut off his income and reputation if he doesn't think exactly like we do?

This title of this book does not accurately reflect the content. It is extremely vague, completely lacking in any technical detail regarding crop production, expected yield per acerage used, costs involved, marketing/selling etc. I can sum this book up in one sentence "I grew some flowers and sold them in my local shop and I dont know how or why I was successful at this practice." This really is a worthless book...the author has a very homely style which reinforces the impression that she is a complete amateur at this business. She runs out of anything useful to say after a couple of chapters and sets off to tell the life-story of her flower-growing acquaintances without paying much notice to the technical and scientific detail of their various ventures. If you are hoping to get some serious insights into growing flowers and developing marketing strategies for selling those flowers, forget it....do not buy this book.

great information. she interviewed growers and marketers of all types of florals, dried and fresh. her advice about growing, cutting, conditioning and marketing will be invaluable. written so that the layman understands. i like the many interview with people actually doing this (not a bunch of academic morons with no life experience just spouting rhetoric.).

This is a powerful story..........2000-03-01

I agree that this book rings hauntingly true, from my own travels on the mainland, Hong Kong, and living in Taiwan. I've read just about all of the most popular autobiographies of Chinese who lived through the Cultural Revolution (the last decade has seen a flood of these, many very good reads), but never have I wanted so BADLY to meet the author as with this book. She rings so true and human, if it's not all true, she is a powerful story teller... She is feisty, funny, and a true survivor... I love the book and her for sharing it with me...

Surprised by the power of this story.......1999-11-09

I have traveled to China on business for 20 years. What struck me was not just the story of the China(s) that I know, but the much deeper and more complex China that I do not know. The author's descriptions ring true to everything I have seen and to the small glimpses I have had of what goes on that is not according to the official story. For instance, I have seen first hand what the author talks about in the generation whose education and professional lives were sacrificed to the cultural revolution. In the late 70's and early 80's, technical meetings would consist of a few older experts and a multitude of young trainees. There were none in the middle age groups who would normally be just entering the peak of their professional lives. A generation on, this is no longer so evident but the effects are still there. Thanks to Toto, by the way, for giving me the opportunity to enjoy this book. I was aware of the difference between the monolithic official line and the incredibly pluralistic personal views of individual Chinese. This book brought home to me just how much more there is to China and the people of China than I known. The events related here would make a fabulous fantasy tale. The strangest thing is that they were instead the normal, every day lives for most of a billion people for many, many years. I heartily recommend this book to any who want an intense and closeup view of China in the last 50 years.

Heartfelt and full of emotion!.......1999-06-17

I came across this book at the library one day while looking for a memoir on the Cultural Revolution. Most of the books that I have read about the Moaist years in China have been about people who didn't realize the effect the Party and Mao had on them. But author Chen Chen was raised by liberal parents and was educated in the Western style. This probably allowed her to relize that some of the movements and programs were a little odd and forced the Party's power on to the brainwashed citizens and the now lost generation. I was totally engrossed in this novel because the story was told by someone who understood what was happening and who was brainwashed.

This book is a moving and important read! While the first 3rd of the book moves slow, with no real compeling story line, it provides incredible insight into the minutia of everyday life in China and the social, political, and cultural forces that influenced recent history there. Government control of property, freedom of speech, government deportations to work camps, and other humiliations, are stark reminders of the freedoms we need to protect in this country. In this country, with 100's of people currently being held, after 9/11, with no charges and no due process, and with the press being challenged in the courts, and propaganda routinely being spewed by our government, this book is a must read, and an important reminder of what is good in this country and what we must continually be vigilant to protect against.
