This is an excellent guide for the independent traveller. Its best use is for details on neighborhoods. I often "study" it before taking off for the day and get a much better feel for the neighborhood I am visiting. I also "study" it after spending time out for the day and clarify or confirm what I have seen. Used it for years.

Excellent Recommendations.......2006-07-16

I own Access Guides to San Francisco and Wine Country and found them to be very reliable sources of information on eating and shopping, so when I was planning a 5-week stay in Paris I purchased this guidebook. Overall, I'm quite pleased.

Access Paris is an excellent guide targeted at a cultured reader that prefers to consider him or herself a visitor to Paris rather than a tourist. The organization emphasizes neighborhoods rather than monuments, and offers excellent information on cafés, restaurants, bars, shops, and other neighborhood attractions. Restaurant listings include a range of prices for each district, though there are fewer budget options than, say, in the Time Out, Let's Go, and Lonely Planet guides. I've gone to a number of the listed restaurants, mostly those in St. Germain and the Bastille with one $ in the listing, and found them to be of high quality, though I was unable to find one or two. And I appreciate the memorable descriptions this book gives--one restaurant is characterized as right out of a Jean Rhys novel, for example--and the frankness of its evaluation of certain restaurants as overrated and overpriced traps for the well-read visitor.

The book's organization, with neighborhood maps followed by entries on each number that appears on the map, is very easy to use while wandering. The neighborhood maps omit metro stops, however, making it difficult to coordinate one's immediate location with the map of the metro that appears at the back of the guide. Also, the local maps don't indicate arrondissements, which makes the guide difficult to use in tandem with a more detailed map book.

This book covers the islands, the Latin Quarter, St-Germain, Eiffel Tower/Invalides, The Louvre and the Champs-Elysées, St-Honoré, Les Halles, the Marais, the Bastille, and Montmartre. These are all well-established eating and shopping districts in the arrodissements that are at the center of the city. There's also a brief section at the end with select attractions in other neighborhoods, as well as sidebars that discuss specific themes or types of sites (Paris in film, representations of Americans in Paris, flea markets, etc.). If you're mainly going to be in the central arrondissements, you'll probably be very happy with this guide. But if you're staying in an outlying arrondissement, or looking for information on offbeat neighborhoods, this may not be the guide for you--as it also may not be if it's your first time in Paris and you want a guidebook that emphasizes a tour of the monuments. I myself have already done the monuments and was looking for what this book has to offer, so I'm very pleased.

I must say, I am a big fan of all the ACCESS guides, and the one on Paris was no exception. I'm always disappointed when I go somewhere and there is no ACCESS guide for that city! One of the best things about the guides, Paris included, is that it allows you to break your trip down by neighborhood. While in Paris, we spent one day (or more) in each of the neighborhoods highlighted in the color code system. We had a great time, and the ACCESS guide played a big part in it (as it did in San Francisco and Montreal!). Highly recommended!

I have several of the "If You Grew Up...." titles in my free-reading area of my sixth grade classroom. The George Washington title is one of the most-often chosen titles--probably because they are curious about our first president. This title also gives a good description of what life was like for the gentry class of Virginia in the 1740s-1760s. Students have been able to use the information to write comparison pieces about GW's life and their own. I highly recommend this title and the others in the series for both the literature and social studies classroom. Weak readers have a high interest in the subject matter; strong readers enjoy a quick read.

The book answers lots of questions; What kind of clothes would you wear?, What about the bathroom?, What did children do to have fun?, What would you learn in school? How did people carry their tabacco around?, Who made the laws for the colony? and many more... Loads of cheery illustrations cover the pages.

excellent book for all audiences.......2002-02-18

This is an excellent book! I teach an antique porcelain class and found it useful to gain expertise quickly. This book is successfully used by appraisers, dealers, collectors and teachers. I have read many porcelain books, and this one was one of the easiest to read and understand. It was well organized and contained a good variety of the styles and characteristics of RS Prussia.

All four volumes are needed to identify pieces, although Ms. Gaston provides a shape guide to help date pieces not pictured.

What I'd like to see in the next book is 1) clarification on how the marks were made, i.e., printed over or under glaze, 2) the types of glazes used (and were pieces refired) 3)repeat of history with changes incorporated, verses the new and updated info section. The history only appears fully in the ist volume.

Okay- I admit it. I did not have a room full of R.S.Prussia china to reference when I bought this book. I just loved the pictures and had to have it! I can dream a little dream and imagine finding a portrait bowl or vase at a small town flea market for next to nothing...and then I can look up its worth and smile as I place my prize in the china cabinet ( a coveted possession NOT for resale!).

As a new collector of R.S. Prussia I found this book to be an excellent reference. It's detailed description and beautiful pictures of the different molds, decorations and marks was very helpful. I know there are a lot of "fake" pieces on the market and this book is proving to be an invaluable guide for me. The history was very interesting also. Thank you Ms. Gaston! A really beautiful book and very informative.

Stay Away from Feng Shui, it's become cultish.......2007-03-19

Invented by someone years ago, each teacher claims they have the answer to all of life's problems if you move your furniture around in your house and paint it certain colors. If not you're going to have bad health, a bad love life etc. Tired of these books that are really evil in trying to control people in need by telling them to use a system that can help them. If you feel moving your couch will change your life, look at the level of gullability you have.

Not a great Book.......2001-08-26

It sure has pretty pictures, but it isn't very well written. If you don't really like the author's style of decorating, you will probably not like this book. It seems to exclude some information, for example different decorating options you have and also lacks answers if you have any questions about your specific house. There are alot of case studies with before and after pictures. It is more westernized than some books, but if you are looking for a good feng shui book, there are many out there, and alot are better than this one.

The pictures in the book are pretty, but the book read more like a western design book than a feng shui book. It discusses the most rudimentary elements of feng shui and I recommend it to people who are not really interested in learning about traditional feng shui. This book is designed for westerners who want a simplified, superficial look at the westernized notion of Feng Shui.

This book's a winner........2000-01-22

Well I'll add my voice to the chorus of recommendations. I'm a feng shui rookie and this was the first book I bought on the subject. I'm very pleased with it. I'm interested in home decorating applications, so the many great color pictures of home interiors are what sold me. I was looking for inspiration and found it.

The book also has a solid overview of the principles. Though I consider the author a good teacher, but not a great one. Perhaps it's just the complexity of the subject that left me a little confused about some of the principles (or my own shortcomings :)). But it seemed like some things could have been clearer. For example I'm still befuddled about the precise methods of using elements to correct defects in sections of a bagua. Do mirrors and wood and other materials have the same compensating effect in each area?

Anyway, I need to keep studying the subject. But this book was a really good start.

Seven years after his 1979 book "TEX and METAFONT", at the start of a revolution leading to ubiquitous desktop publishing (first Macintosh in 1984), Knuth published a set of five books on TEX, METAFONT, and typefaces.

His purpose as teacher was to show a new way to write and document computer programs -- "literate" programming. In these volumes Knuth published two sizeable PASCAL applications for computerized typesetting and -- as a byproduct -- invented a documentation tool, CWEB, that both preserves the textual accuracy of the source code and improves programmer comprehension for debugging and maintenance purposes.

The peer review process implied by Knuth's demonstration, his careful attention to the tiniest details, and his gift of the source code to the public domain are all foundations of today's open source community.

This is hardly an introductory text on programming and very few of us read computer programs for fun. That said, a programmer with some experience could learn a great deal by thorough study and imitation of the master craftsmen (don't forget about John D. Hobby) at work here.

Useful in ways you wouldn't imagine.......2000-12-13

MF: The Program is a surprisingly readable batch of source code (at least partially co-written by John Hobby, by the way). Yes, you can reproduce (almost) the book from the source code (and get a printout that includes post-publication bugs fixes and enhancements), but it's not quite as convenient and lacks the page-by-page mini-indices. Whether the convenience is worth [the money] is up to you.

Where the book is especially helpful is for someone who's looking to see graphical algorithims spelled out by a master programmer in a literate and enteratining way. Me, I've got the full 5 volume set of TeX/MF books, but then, once upon a time, this was how I made my living.
