Book Description
First published in 1969, Lewis and Clark: Pioneering Naturalists remains the most comprehensive account of the scientific studies carried out by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark during their overland expedition to the Pacific Northwest and back in 1804–6. Summaries of the animals, plants, topographical features, and Indian tribes encountered are included at the end of each chapter devoted to the particular leg of the journey. A distinguished biologist, Paul Russell Cutright will be remembered for this landmark contribution to our understanding of the world that the expedition observed and recorded.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book - could use more illustrations though.......2003-09-07
This book is a fascinating natural history of the Lewis and Clark expedition that deals not just with flora and fauna but also with geology, geography, medicine, and the ethnography of the tribes the explorers met on their way to the Pacific and back. The story is told chronologically, with enough detail that if your main interest is natural history this could be the only history of the expedition you will want to read.
The author writes in a surprisingly readable style. The book's only drawback is the almost total lack of illustrations. Judging from the nice drawing on the cover, taken from a page of the explorers' journals, there were illustrations available but they didn't make it into the text. There were so many times when even a line drawing would have been helpful. At the very least some maps (one for each chapter, showing rivers, the explorers' path, and major landmarks along with maybe a light outline of present state boundaries) should be added to future editions.
The bottom line: this is a good book with a wealth of information. You may want to keep a map and/or a wildlife guide handy as you read, though.

Book Description
Lewis and Clark on the Great Plains is an easy-to-use reference on the wildlife that Meriwether Lewis and William Clark encountered during their 1804–6 Corps of Discovery expedition. More than one hundred animals and plants that were first carefully described and in some cases discovered by Lewis and Clark are identified here.
More than accounts of the regional flora and fauna, Lewis and Clark on the Great Plains examines the lasting importance of the expedition’s discoveries, the significance of the Plains plants and animals to local Native Americans, and the current status of Plains wildlife. Lavishly illustrated with Paul A. Johnsgard’s drawings of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and plants, the book also includes a guide to the Lewis and Clark sites of botanical and zoological interest and more than seventy sites where readers can follow in the footsteps of two of America’s greatest pioneering naturalists.

HANDY.......2005-09-30
Nice size to carry. Good information, however, difficult to find info without going to index. And one has to flip from one map to another. It almost assumes one knows where there are to begin with. But well organized if you already know a lot about NYC.
Not good for reading on a street corner.
Moon Metro New York -- What a star!.......2002-07-02
I decided to bring Moon Metro New York City with me on my first trip to the Big Apple. I couldn't have made a better decision! This guidebook never failed me once in my travels through the city. I loved how easy it was to read, the colorful pages, the insightful descriptions, and the pocketbook size. I'm going to make sure my next vacation will be a destination that Moon Metro covers! Avalon Travel Publishing and Moon Metro New York City deserve five stars.
Best guidebook I've ever used, period........2002-05-22
I've used lots of different travel guides in the past but have always been disappointed with something about them, so I usually end up bringing two or three books with me, which [stinks] big time. That's why I really like these Metro books. Small, chock full of info the I need, and easy to use. Besides the cool blue covers, what really makes them stand out is the foldout maps. I've used the SF and NYC Metros and regretted buying the Fodors and Let's Gos. Save yourself some luggage space, time, and money and pick up one of these books instead of a pile of the others.
Great guide!.......2002-05-22
I've never written one of these reviews before, but after using Moon Metro: New York City on my last trip, I simply had to say how helpful it was. The maps were fantastic and made a city that was new to me incredibly accessible. My friends and I picked several restaurants and shops at random from the book and were never disappointed. The reviews were right on. I fell in love with New York and I can honestly say my experience would not have been the same without this guide.

Parting with the critics.......2006-03-19
I must part with the critics. I enjoyed this one tremendously. Great fun. Recommended.
A brief comment.......2005-12-04
This book by well known and long-time Mensa member Marvin Grosswirth complements the several books that Dr. Abby Salny has put out. There's enough variety in the types of questions to keep just about anybody entertained, although a few of the questions I'm not used to seeing on the older, more traditional IQ tests. Supposedly almost a quarter of a million people have bought the various Mensa Quiz books, which is interesting, because Mensa's membership (I being one) has been gradually declining for a couple of decades. Overall a good book of puzzles, brain teasers and IQ questions to keep those mental muscles in tune, which is important--one of the most important things brain scientists have learned over the last several decades is that the brain is very much like a muscle--either you use it or lose it.
Surely the answer is 5.5.......2005-08-16
The question asks "How many horses did the owner SELL", not how many did he get rid of.
Assuming (although not stated) that he ended up with no horses left:
To the first purchaser, he SOLD 3.5 and GAVE AWAY 0.5.
To the second, he SOLD 1.5 and GAVE AWAY 0.5.
To the third, he SOLD 0.5 and GAVE AWAY 0.5.
So the total number of horses he SOLD is 3.5 + 1.5 + 0.5 = 5.5
THE ANSWER IS 7.......2005-05-12
The orginal question that was posted should have indicated that there were no horses left at the end of the day. Without that qualifier, there can be no definitive answer.
If the Merchant has 7 horses when he sees his FIRST customer, then sells half (3.5) and adds half a horse (0.5), then he has sold to the first customer 4 horses, leaving him with 3 horses.
Then, the Merchant goes to his SECOND customer, and sells half his horses (1.5) and adds half a horse (0.5) then he has sold to the SECOND customer 2 horses, leaving him with 1 horse.
Finally, the Merchant goes to his THIRD and FINAL customer, and sells half of his horses (0.5) and adds a half a horse (0.5), so that the Merchant has sold to the THIRD and FINAL customer 1 horse, leaving the Merchant with ZERO horses.
Three transactions, selling half his total plus 0.5, ending the series in zero.
The total number of horses is 7.
The answer is "3".......2004-12-18
If you only turn two transactions, the answer is three, not 7. I didn't read the book, so I do not know how the question was asked, but the way the poster wrote it only shows two transactions, and therefore the answer is 3 Horses.
**of 3 horses
One half = 1.5 plus a half = 2 (one horse remaining). Half of that horse plus a half equals 1 horse. So 3 horses in total.

Customer Reviews:
Good on personality and characteristics of breed.......2006-08-09
Not as comprehensive as Italian Greyhounds 21st Century, this is an excellent book. It mostly features European, esp. British, IGs in the discussions. It is easy to read while including a lot of detail about the breed. I had not seen some of the information on the personality of this breed and how that affects training in other books I've read and that was very interesting to me. This book is much better than some of the light-weight glossy breed books [yes, it does have many high quality photos].
My first and favorite IG book.......2006-01-10
This is the first IG book that I purchased when I got my first IG (mind is an older edition, I think). I found it extremely useful in getting to know the quirks of IGs (and mine have many) and the photos are beautiful. I would note that this is NOT the breed for everyone. They are hard to housetrain (especially for those of us with irregular schedules) and they have tiny little bones. However, you can't beat them for sweetness.
I've not read the "IG in the 21st Century" book, but this is the best of any of the ones I have seen on the subject so far. Gave 4 stars only because this is a newer edition than mine and may have some changes.
Great Book.......2003-10-08
This is such a great book. And such a surprise. The writer does a great job in keeping details non boring with her stories of who has had these wonderful dogs and how lucky we are today to still have the breed..She covers the basics and then some.Facts can be boring to us who dont no the history of the breed and who shows what, but the way the writer plays on telling facts inside of details makes for fun, exciting non boring read.I was not sure what to expect from buying this book since it had not been reviewed..and Im ever so glad I took the chance and plunged ahead with getting it.It has delightful pictures.. It makes for very good reading, and not just a one time read either.Youl find yourself reaching for it again and again and it will make for a good read everytime...B.W.

Customer Reviews:
This book is a waste of money.......2007-09-09
I purchased this book a few years ago and got "sucked into" purchasing a blueprint. The "plans" are sketches of mature yards, and the "plan view" doesn't really help as far as knowing what plants to use. What ends up happening is you spend more money on the blueprints. THEN when you get the blueprints, the plants "recommended" for your region aren't easy to obtain!
Blueprints in hand, I visited a local nursery and struck out with many of the plants recommended.
Don't waste your money, hoping that for $11 you'll get a useful landscape plan.
CAN YOU SAY RIPOFF?.......2000-08-29
A quick glance through this book at the home and garden store promised many detailed designs. Upon close examination, however, it became clear that this book is nothing more than a glossy come-on, requiring you to sink another fifteen bucks PER DESIGN for a plant list specific to your locale. Don't waste your money on this one.
beds and borders.......2000-02-05
The detail on structuring the garden (balance, colors, form, etc.)is excellent, especially for someone who has already tried to create a professional-looking landscape but didn't have all the info!)
Disappointing.......1999-06-15
This book is nothing more than an attempt to get you to buy their landscape blueprints. It is actually put out by Home Planners. Not very up front about this fact on the cover though
