What a way to go!.......2001-09-26

I always knew this area of the Southwest was beautiful, based on my limited firsthand experience. Reading this guidebook makes me want to go back and explore more of the places I missed. Mr. White's use of the language evokes not only the beauty of the area but offers fascinating bits of information about the geology and origins of the places described. Guidebooks are used to guide, obviously, but this one, thanks to Mr. White, also illuminates and entertains. Mr. Huey's photography is first-rate. Highly recommended.

This is one of a series of books provided by National Geographic featuring the famous and lesser-known, less traveled parks in the United States. The series is divided into regions and provides invaluable information about accommodations, trails, activities, optimal times of travel, etc. Don't plan a trip without perusing these books!

A Great Book For Kids!.......1998-07-14

This is a really great book to get children interested in history. Mr. Roop makes the voyage of Columbus very interesting and very easy to read for kids. For introducing history to kids, I would really get this book.

Much the same as her previous " Falconry Care, Captive breeding and Conservation" - but was well worth doing as is underlines serious points and issues. On the whole a very good book with excellent information and photography. The author does as with the last book seem to have a very high opinion of herself and holds herself up as THE FALCONER in Britain today.

I was concerned that the author also seems to put the notion across that her Falconry Centre is the only good one in the country and that everyone else is just either playing at it or only in it to make money - as if she isn't what with at least two books, courses, displays etc... I do believe that she holds the welfare of the birds as her highest priority, but this can only be maintained with adequate finance as is the situation with everyone else.

Note : Cover picture - Buzzard only held by one Jess 2nd page in - one of the jesses is not secured properly to the swivel, preventing the swivel from working properly.. Pages 78,79 and 81, these are surely unhelpful pictures to put on public view - a falcon shying away and hanging from the fist.The anti-hunting lobby would love this.

Not Impressed.......2000-11-05

The author of this book is a garden designer not a floral designer, and there is a big difference. To me, two stems of Casablanca lilies by themselves in a vase (page 95) is not an arrangement worthy of two pages in a book. There was not one arrangement in the pages that I found to be anything other than leaves or sticks in a pot or jar. The arrangements were pretty and simple, yes, but the photography was really what this book was about. It couldn't have been about the floral design as there wasn't any.

A beautiful and inspiring book........2000-03-28

This beautifully photograph laden book has been an inspiration to get me out into nature and my own yard. It shows many diverse plant materials used to create extrodinary arrangements. Edwina's arrangements and anectdotes are amusing and interesting. She shows you how to make an arrangement of common bark that could be a centerpiece at any lavish party or backyard barbecue! I now regularly go out into nature and my own yard to collect leaves, branches and flowers to create my own arrangements.

I'm familiar with Ryans' "art" work, and it truley is inspiring. So I bought this book and got a bunch of his logo and design stuff...which is cool...just not exactly what I was looking for.

well, where to start. i'm glad i didn't buy this book, it's a complete sham, which may very well be the point - but it's completely superficial, and insulting to real graphic designers and design students to pass these exercises off as a touchstone of modern design principle. the dadaist overtones are not lost on me, but the straight forward design solutions are just that - straightforward, highly derivative (IF NOT TRITE), and quite frankly, boring. if this is the present and future of design, we're in serious trouble. i'm the biggest proponent of thumbing my nose at established design, but you have to know who you're thumbing it towards. breaking from the past requires a knowledge of that past, i see no evidence of such hind- and/or fore-sight in this book. it's been reiterated ad nauseum that picasso was probably the finest draftman of his day, if not history. point being he didn't simply begin with cubism or collage. i fear that the computer has caused such a horrible deterioration of the design process, that this book is what the masses will consider 'good' design. unfortunately those masses include potential clients and students who are our future designers. for those students i recommend beale, lustig, hoffman, rand, lissitzky, malevich, mondrian. go to the source, otherwise you've resigned yourself to a future of luke warm, rehashed gruel. eat up kiddies, hope you choke. this doesn't deserve any stars in my opinion, but as a matter of default i must give it 1. designers are not rock stars, but this guy is the equivalent of britney spears - all filler, literally and figuratively.

What your design should be more like.......1999-11-03

McGuiness tells the designers of the world to stop for a few brief seconds and consider the melange of visual stimuli that we wade through every day. He both shows us how and asks us why we so easily idendify with the vernacular. The ideas in this book are simply and effectively illustrated and serve as a modern suplement the other great graphic design references such as Gregg Barryman's Notes on Graphic Design.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, or Awo, was a politician and statesman, intellectual, and one of the leading African philosophers of the twentieth century, as such best known for writing his African Platonic tract The Peoples's Republic in 1968, and his doctrine of 'Mental Magnitude'. His cardinal social principles were the development of mind and body, in the context of contemporary, developing Africa, free education and free health. Makinde's study and biography, a product of discussions with Awo between 1979 and 1987, as well as research, examines his social and political philosophy, and his metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and philosophy of science, religion and traditional medicine. It includes some of Awo's most enduring writings, and speeches. This is a long-overdue, but welcome publication, for a long time impossible in Nigeria because of its dangerously democratic content, Awo having been variouly described as 'the main issue in Nigerian politics' (Ibrahim Babangida) and 'the best President Nigeria never had' (Odumegwu Ojukwu).
