    Book Description

This book comprehensively reviews the current developments in endocrinology and the techniques available for the molecular analysis of endocrine systems. Gene structure, regulation and methods of analysis are first described, followed by coverage of hormone receptors and intracellular signaling in relation to peptide hormones and the steroid hormone receptor superfamily. The biochemistry and molecular biology of selected endocrine systems are then discussed in detail, by reference to normal and disease states. This volume in the Human Molecular Genetics series is an invaluable text for endocrinologists wishing to update their knowledge. It also provides an excellent grounding in the basic genetics of molecular endocrinology and relevant analytical techniques for researchers less familiar with the field.

      Book Description

Talk about a fresh perspective! Perched 35,000 feet in the air, Window Seat decodes the sights to be seen on any flight across North America. Broken down by region, this unusual guide features 70 aerial photographs; a fold-out map of North America showing major flight paths; profiles of each region covering its landforms, waterways, and cities; tips on spotting major sights, such as the Northern Lights, the Grand Canyon, and Disney World; tips on spotting not-so-major sights such as prisons, mines, and Interstates; and straightforward, friendly text on cloud shapes, weather patterns, the continent's history, and more. A terrific book for kids, frequent flyers, and armchair travelers alike, Window Seat is packed with curious facts and colorful illustration, proving that flying doesn't have to be a snooze. When it's possible to "read" the landscape from above, a whole world unfolds at your feet.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting content, wrong title.......2007-04-11

The book was interesting and full of cool photos...but it is poorly packaged and marketed. I picked up the book expecting it to be about air travel, planes, flight paths, etc, and what you see through the window on a flight from LAX to JFK, for example. Instead it is really just a geographical study of the country with photos from much higher in the air than a commercial aircraft ever goes - the photos are satellite. So while the content makes for an interesting read and does provide some context for what you see out the window of an airplane, the book is inappropriately titled.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction into reading landforms from the air.......2006-11-12

I used to fly alot on commercial flights and bought this to explore further my interest in geography from an aerial perspective. I was instantly disappointed as the photographs, with two exceptions, were high resolution images taken from satellites! That said, I realize that to show the highlights the author draws us towards, the crisp, detailed images he supplied are helpful as learning guides to acquaint our eyes with what to look for by way of patterns and the like. And, the author does mention his use of these orbital images on pages 13-14.

To understand why he took that approach, review the snapshot of the New York/Newark area on page 10. I've seen that view a number of times after leaving LaGuardia, heading south. Contrast that with the exquisite orbital image including the same area on pages 18-19. No comparison! Yet, the view on page 10 is what more of us would tend to see when we have a clear day, good sun angle, with clean, unscratched windows.

Mr. Dicum probably meant for this to be a quick reference, quick start guide for armchair travelers to whet their appetities. For those wanting to see general landscape views and especially clouds as seen at 30,000 feet, look up the book of the same title by Julieanne Kost. Keep in mind this latter work supplies little geographical interpretation. But, it is the real thing!

There is a dearth of works up to the claim of featuring aerial perspectives representative of the oblique views a passenger of commercial flights flying at 30,000 feet would see. The ones worth their salt, such as America from 500 Feet (Fortney & Fortney) and High Above the Canadian Rockies (Heinl) are outstanding, yet they capture tight, low altitude views more along the lines of that seen from a helicopter flight or a private plane. It may be that more people prefer close up shots rather than a spectacular wide angle view yielding slight detail.

I'm surprised that previous reviewers, privy to the experience of peering out from aerial perspectives and disappointed at the substance of this work by Dicum, didn't share with amazon shoppers the best, readily available resource for assisting in identifying many landforms and objects as seen from aerial perspectives. Go to your local commuter airport (which the small, private planes utilize) and purchase the respective sectional aeronautical charts for the geographical areas you'll be flying over. The 1:500,000 scale is excellent for assisting you in deciphering where you are. There are 37 of these that cover the lower 48 states. These show power line swaths, tall structures of note like smokestacks, and airport runway configurations, the latter a real help in pinpointing where you are at a given moment. Caveat: be somewhat discreet in your airborne use of these lest some overimaginiative passengers draw sinister motives to your benign interest in the landforms below.

4 out of 5 stars Helps flights go faster............2006-06-23

I'm not going to touch on the aerial/satellite issue, as that's already been covered. It is a clever idea for a book, educational and fun, and when flying over major land formations like the Grand Canyon, it is useful. Since our snacks, movies, free drinks, etc have been taken away, looking out the window is just about the best entertainment left on a plane, and this book helps take advantage of that.

1 out of 5 stars Stolen from another author.......2006-05-23

Window Seat was stolen from a series of books entitled Window Seat published in Singapore in 2002. Everything: from the idea, the content, the design, the colouring and even down to the blurb on the back cover: was ripped off wholesale from the original Window Seat series, published in Singapore two years prior to the publication of this book. Gregory Dicum is a [...] and a thief.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to take on the plane for an even more memorable trip!.......2006-05-22

Here's one that's hard to categorize: seventy aerial photos give a fine landscape view of the earth and mimic what you'd see from the window seat of a plane - but that's not all. Here's map showing major flight paths, profiles of different North American region landforms and waterways, tips on spotting major sites from the air - everything you need to take on the plane for an even more memorable trip!

1 out of 5 stars Not so bad.......2007-01-04

First thing I want to say is that this book is not a "window seat" one as all the pictures included were taken from a satellite.
The texts are corect and clear and the photgraphs extraordinary.
I only want to comment something. As a spaniard, I can say that there are not so many whales in the Bay of Biscay, as it is said in pg.75.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect companion to original Window Seat.......2006-11-28

Dicum does it again! I'm one of those people who are glued to the window from take-off to landing, so I loved Window Seat for it's wealth of information and gorgeous aerial photography. I'm pleased to report that Window Seat: Europe delivers the same quality and joy of discovery. I've got a European trip planned for next Spring, and I'm really looking forward to using Window Seat: Europe -- Dicum's genius is in showing us how to enjoy sightseeing from 35,000 feet up!

                    Book Description

The decline of cheap oil is inspiring increasing numbers of North Americans to achieve some measure of backyard food self-sufficiency. In hard times, the family can be greatly helped by growing a highly productive food garden, requiring little cash outlay or watering.

Currently popular intensive vegetable gardening methods are largely inappropriate to this new circumstance. Crowded raised beds require high inputs of water, fertility and organic matter, and demand large amounts of human time and effort. But, except for labor, these inputs depend on the price of oil. Prior to the 1970s, North American home food growing used more land with less labor, with wider plant spacing, with less or no irrigation, and all done with sharp hand tools. But these sustainable systems have been largely forgotten. Gardening When It Counts helps readers rediscover traditional low-input gardening methods to produce healthy food.

Designed for readers with no experience and applicable to most areas in the English-speaking world except the tropics and hot deserts, this book shows that any family with access to 3-5,000 sq. ft. of garden land can halve their food costs using a growing system requiring just the odd bucketful of household waste water, perhaps two hundred dollars worth of hand tools, and about the same amount spent on supplies - working an average of two hours a day during the growing season.

This book is an exciting addition to books on vegetable growing- so much so, that many
others become unnecessary. The author covers in detail everything about the art- from seed buying,
his own complete organic fertilizer recipe, preparing the soil, simple tools, planting and watering etc
His long experience and total integrity and commitment shine through and make it a must for those
                    wanting to seriously feed themselves.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly good - with attitude.......2007-09-14

This book was highly recommended to me and I bought it hoping to learn some techniques to help in growing food plants and vegetables for our home use. Since the author lives in a very distinct growing area, if I lived in a maritime New Zealand area it would probably be a perfect book. Many of his techniques would only work in his specific climate and for a full time gardener, which I am not. Sigh. The section on growing and storing each individual type of food is excellent if you can adapt it to your own climate. I was not too happy with the preachy, arrogant, "Everyone else is an idiot and only I know how to do it right" attitude which extends the lenght of the book by quite a bit. Overlooking that, there are a few helpful tidbits but there are other books that I think are more helpful.

5 out of 5 stars best garden guide i've found.......2007-08-15

after looking through a lot of gardening books, i can confidently say that this book provides the best basis of knowledge for starting a garden. My garden is in only its first year, but with the info in this book, I'm already making money selling organic produce through two different coops.

5 out of 5 stars Great for first time gardeners.......2007-05-10

I will be starting my first garden this summer and this was the first book on gardening I read. It makes for a great introduction. Solomon goes into detail about how plants grow and what they need from the gardener. He has a good formula for Organic Fertilizer. He has a good list of what tools you need and what to look for when buying them. He has a great section is the back of the book that goes vegetable by vegetable and explains how to grow and harvest them. He also has a great bibliography in the back that points you to a lot of additional reading.[...]

                    5 out of 5 stars Great hands-on resource.......2007-03-25

I have a whole shelf of vegetable gardening books, but I turn to this one again and again. Solomon gives clear information on tools, making garden beds, mixing up your own fertilizer (this alone is worth the price of the book), selecting seeds, storing them (another great section), and growing individual crops.

I especially appreciate his perspective as an ex-seedsman, as well as his discussion on different types of brassicas (cabbage, kale, broccoli, and the like) and onions. I had no idea what the difference between long-day and short-day onions were until I read this book. While I garden intensively, I find his discussion on the differences between the intensive method (John Jeavons, Square Foot Gardening, and the like), and the row method.

This book is worth reading and rereading.

                      Book Description

The essays collected in Italian Studies on Philo of Alexandria give an overview of the main trends of current Italian research on Philo of Alexandria, making much of this research accessible for the first time in the English language. Over the past few years, there has been renewed interest in Italy in research on Philo. Philo's thought can best be addressed in a multidisciplinary study to examine its complexity and its implications. The essays in the volume are accordingly approached from various perspectives: historical, linguistic, philological, and philosophical.

                        Book Description

In The Slumbering Volcano, Maggie Montesinos Sale investigates depictions of nineteenth-century slave ship revolts to explore the notion of rebellion in formulations of United States national identity. Analyzing how such revolts inspired citizens to debate whether political theory directed at free men could be extended toward blacks, Sale compares the reception of fictionalized versions of ship revolts published in the 1850s—Benito Cereno by Herman Melville and The Heroic Slave by Frederick Douglass—with the previous decade’s public accounts of actual rebellions by enslaved people on the ships Amistad and Creole.
This comparison of narrative response with written public reaction to the actual revolts allows Sale to investigate the precise manner in which public opinion regarding definitions of liberty evolved over this crucial period of time between the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Mapping the ways in which unequally empowered groups claimed and transformed statements associated with the discourse of national identity, Sale succeeds in recovering a historically informed sense of the discursive and activist options available to people of another era.
In its demonstration of how the United States has been uniquely shaped by its dual status as both an imperial and a postcolonial power, this study on the discourse of natural rights and national identity in the pre-Civil War United States will interest students and scholars of American studies, African American studies, gender studies, and American history and literature.

An interesting accounts that details to much on the fictionized stories concerning these slave revolts. The book seriously neglects what happen to the crews and the slaves themselves.
