Contains my all time favorite children's story.......2006-02-12
I remember my librairian reading this and the other west wind books at my elementary school library around 1971-73. Even though we were the children of the Flintstones, Fat Albert, Sesame Street, and the Electric Company, we had a great love for these gentle and moving stories. In particular, my favorite of the west wind tales appear in this book, "The Most beautiful Thing In the World." This was where the animals gathered in a rush to see "the most beautiful thing in the world" which was in a nearby field. What was it? Read this book and you'll see.

My dad read all of Thornton W. Burgess books to me as a child and now I read them to my daughter she loves them and I still love them myself. You cant go wrong reading any of his work. Wish there were more books like this today.

I read the entire series as a child.Grandchildren will like........1999-06-22
After 40 year, I just reread the series. By todays standards, the books are a little old fashioned, but manners & obedience never go out of style. Besides, kids learn alot about how different wild animals live.

Good Info to have for Kids.......2007-07-17
This book really helped us decide what to do in Las Vegas. We do not gamble so we wanted "other" things to do. What we found is Las Vegas is not "family" friendly and you have to take your children into the gaming areas of most casinos to see the attractions. The book did offer suggestions that we did find helpful. Like how to avoid certain crowds and what shows are appropriate for kids. Much better than some of the other books out there.
Indispensable guide for families.......2004-01-18
This is an incredibly detailed book that has a huge amount of information on what to do, see, and avoid in Vegas if you are traveling with children. The section on which restaurants and buffets to eat at for families that are on a budget is more than worth the price of this book. This book, along with "The Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas" by Bob Sehlinger will make planning your trip to Vegas fun and informative. Both are highly recommended!!
Very detailed information parents need when planning a trip.......2003-05-31
I highly recommend this book to anyone headed for Las Vegas with the kids in tow. It paints a very complete picture of the city and answers questions you'd never even think to ask.
This book was published just as we were planning a trip that includes a stop in Las Vegas. Our three kids (ages 10, 8, 6) love to travel, but we have learned that you can never do enough research when it comes to planning a trip with kids.
Having been to Vegas more than a few times without the kids, we have a pretty good feel for the place. Even so, a vacation with the kids along needs to be a very different type of trip, so we still found ourselves with many questions. Happily, this book answers them all!
Very specific information on everything from hotels, restaurants, and attractions (including which places are NOT kid-friendly). Also includes info on side trips, shopping, etc. Everything is broken down into price categories (from very expensive to inexpensive and everything between). Definitely written by someone who understands that kids are not just miniature adults.
I only wish I could get hold of such complete information for all our destinations!
The only book you need for vegas with kids........2003-05-13
Snappily written and very informative. Made our trip so much easier. Loads of new places and activities for the kids.
Highly recommended.

Book Description
From a log cabin in Kentucky to the White House, the life of Abraham Lincoln is an inspiring saga of courage and dedication. Simple words and timeless pictures weave the important threads of Lincoln's life into a colorful folk tapestry that illustrates a true American pioneer of justice.
"Zeldis's oversized gouache paintings give this picture-book biography a folkloric look that suits its larger-than-life subject. Kunhardt's brief text avoids any fictionalization and presents the important events in Lincoln's youth and many careers in a straightforward, objective fashion.... A praiseworthy effort."School Library Journal.
"Hits the high spots and finds time for memorable tidbits... Consider multiple copies."Booklist (starred review).

Honest Abe.......2004-08-03
The pictures are imaginative.Zeldis does a terrific job of making the paintings come to live. The pictures alone tell a story. The words by Kunhardt make the story enjoyable and easy to understand. The book has real events that occured when lincoln was president. Children learn about history and the events that took place during Lincoln's term in office.
Young Readers Will Learn A Lot!.......2000-06-21
The perfect picture book biography about Lincoln. With bold, colorful illustrations the illustrator allows the author to cover dicey parts of Lincoln's story (ie., assassination) by portraying the subjects with folk-style looking characters. For example the scene where Lincoln is shot is appropriate for young kids to look at as it is not graphic nor bloody. Somehow, it works and allows for a discussion about how Lincoln died and why he died.Outstanding effort! Plus the book is bigger than average picture books!

Lively Human Art for Churches.......2000-03-25
I have searched high and low for illustrations for church bulletins and newsletters. Most are stiff and pious or cute and hoaky. This artwork portrays biblical stories and church life today in very human, very useable graphics. The graphics have a casual iconographic character that shows good influence from Hispanic traditions. As a Lutheran pastor, a few of the graphics are a little too strongly Roman Catholic in their themes for my use, but the vast majority are very useable by almost all denominations. I am frequently asked for my source for these graphics.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent grooming info.......2007-07-20
Great for the new MS owner and those interested in grooming their own dogs. Newman's section on grooming is VERY helpful!
Ideal book for a 'beginner'.......2000-11-04
This book, as is often the case with this kind of book, emphasises on winning dogs in Britain and a few other countries. But the part of the book that is really really excellent is the grooming and training-part. If you read and study this groomingmanual well than you'll be able to strip and groom your schnauzer all by yourself! Have fun doing it!
Good book, includes KC, AKC, FCI commented standars.......1999-06-15
The autor, who is a recognised British breeder, guide us into a comparision of the different breed standars (KC, AKC, FCI). Mr. Newman emphasise on the development of the mini schnauzers into the United Kingdom, includes a section on grooming plenty of photos, show training, and others. Also a review of the most influential British kennels is included. It is a good complement for the Kiedrowski's Book.

Mail on wheels.......2001-01-17
As a collector of Postal items, I find that this book is a great reference for motor vehicles that have moved the mail. The author, being the curator for the Smithsonian Postal Museum has access to many photos that few people have seen. Some of these are just wonderful.
The book is heavily illustrated, and each illustration is identified as to what it is. The history of the Postal Service included with the history of its vehicles is very good, although in order to obtain the complete story, you will need to obtain the rest of Mr. Bruns' books.

Shirley Botsford is renowned to many crafters as the author of the delightful Shirley Botsford's Daddy's Ties: A Project & Keepsake Book, in which she creates one-of-a-kind decorative items with recycled neckties. In Decorating with Fabric Crafts, she has chosen another unique approach. Each of the 10 groupings of projects is inspired by a different architectural element in her immense Victorian home. It all began when she realized that one of the tiled hearths reminded her of a patchwork quilt, giving rise to a very pretty ribbon-piecework hatbox, memory album cover, and keepsake stuffed bear. The leafy design of a staircase's twin newel posts sprout from an appliquéd panel screen and a lacy table cover. A lampshade and a desk blotter take their motifs from ornamental brackets.
This clever approach could easily have become tired or trite, but by and large Botsford manages to inject a great deal of variety into her 32 projects. The step-by-step directions are not tremendously detailed but should prove more than adequate for intermediate-level sewers, and the publisher has thoughtfully included a thick envelope of complete, full-size tissue-paper patterns for all designs. With Botsford as their guide, crafters can fully indulge a penchant for Victoriana and can stitch, quilt, embroider, and stencil their way to a houseful of lovely decorative accessories. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
Projects for the entire home.......2002-01-25
Unlike many craft books that focus on one project, Shirley provides details (and patterns in the back of the book!) to make a variety of items for the home. Inspired by her 1889 Queen Anne Victorian home, Shirley shares how the house led her to create a stenciled satin quilt, teapot cozy, bordered napkins, a muffin warmer, silk embroidered bell pull, appliqued table runner, quilted place mats, appliqued panel screen, and more. My favorites are the teddy bear made of ribbons (I love beautiful ribbons but don't know what to do with them sometimes) and a velvet covered memory album.
This is a great book for someone who wants to buy only one book, but learn how to do lots of things. Instructions seemed clear and easy to me, but I do have some experience in many areas. Still, I think most beginners will find these projects quite manageable. More experienced crafters will find inspiration in the way Shirley approached her house's decorating needs and how she used the motifs already in her home to design complimentary items.
I wish I was this talented!.......2000-06-08
I found this title far more than the everage arts and crafts book--it's colorful, meaty, literate (how many craft books quote Edith Wharton?)and best of all inspiring. The author admits her purchase of a huge Victorian mansion (now a B&B) plunged her into many decorating projects and she often felt, "I'm not in charge anymore, the house wants this..." From bandboxes to quilts, a teddy bear or a tea cosy, this is more than a craft book--it's a good read!

A Lot of Black Baseball History!.......2005-06-27
The book tells Al Burrows' story--the same story for many of the Negro League players--playing black baseball, while ultimately being denied the opportunity to join a white Major League organization, because of the color line drawn by segregation. Al Burrows' baseball career included playing a short time for the New York Black Yankees and several years playing for the Indianapolis Clowns.
The many in-depth interviews with the Negro League baseball players and fans tells a story often unheard in African American history. The mere fact that Negro League teams played white teams and won more games than they lost began to be a threat to white baseball players. They felt that their positions were in jeopardy if blacks were allowed to play with them. White players and fans often yelled racial epithets at any "colored" player within listening range. This was a time of heated emotions and white players were often extremely hostile towards black players.
Then, there is the dispute of whether black baseball players during the late 1940's and early 1950's are actual Negro League players or barnstorming players. The book tells about the missed opportunities, and the many trials and tribulations of the players, but also provides Negro League history, baseball trivia, black baseball facts, myths and rumors, as well as providing 26 black and white photographs, most unseen. It took me a year and a half to research most of the information. I wanted to provide educational and invaluable information about black baseball. The book includes a list of Negro League Teams by state, a list of surviving Negro League players and many black baseball facts that are not so well known. This book is loaded with historical facts about black baseball and is an easy read for adults as well as children.
I enjoyed writing the book and I'm an avid New York Yankees fan!
Outstanding Account of a "Forgotten" Negro Leaguer's Story.......2004-05-25
This book is an insightful, thoughtful and occasionally touching account of the career of Al Burrows, one of the many long-overlooked stars of the old Negro Leagues. An extremely well-written book, A FORGOTTEN NEGRO LEAGUE STAR describes the struggles and triumphs of a man who played baseball for the love of the game. Historically, it certainly gives a perspective on a way of life which is almost incomprehensible to those of us who can only imagine what life must have been like in America--and in sports, particularly--in the pre-Jackie Robinson days of baseball.
BEST READ SPORTS BOOK SINCE ALI AND BRUCE LEE.......2004-04-04
I truly enjoyed reading CHERYL ROBINSON's "A Forgotten Negro League Star." My favorite spectator sports are Karate, Boxing, and Basketball. Some of the last sports books I read were about Ali and Bruce Lee. But this book was by far the best book I've read about a sports star like Al Burrows since those two. I applaude Ms Robinson on making it easy to read and interesting to this man (who's not really a big baseball fan). But I found it exciting to read about Al and the others who made American History playing a game they truly loved tho the LOVE, FAME, AND FINANCES weren't always returned to negroes like whites. It made me wish he'd gotten his major league chance. I look forward to reading more from CHERYL ROBINSON.
