100 Years of Adventure and Discovery!.......2006-06-10
I've been a fan of National Geographic since I was just a little boy, the captivating photographs and well written articles of The National Geographic Society have never ceased to amaze me.
When I bought this book a week ago, I was reluctant to believe that I had made a wise decision in buying it. But after it arrived in the mail and I saw those wonderful photographs and read the articles of this book, I realized just how wrong I had been! I usually dont buy the newer publications of National Geographic due to the decline in the quality of the articles over the years. These days, the articles published in the pages of National Geographic magazine are sub-par when compared to the articles of the 80's & 90's. What ever happened to the writers whos articles inspired me to become a Journalist? Anyway, I was worried that this book would be lacking in the quality of it's articles, but I was glad to discover that I was wrong! This is one of the best National Geographic books that I have ever read! It contains some of the best writing that I've ever seen, not to mention the breath-taking photography that has always made National Geographic such an icon among books and magazines!
If you're a fan of National Geographic, then I highly recommend adding this book to your collection!
And if you're a fan of fine photography then I highly recommend buying this book! It's packed full of more than 400 full color and black & white photographs!
And at the price that they're selling it for, they're practically giving it away! Buy it now, you wont be disappointed!
The Reason Why The National Geographic is Still Here.......2002-01-14
Only National Geographic could chronicle the triumphs and the tragedies of mankind, as well as the awesome wonder of nature. This thick volume features award-winning photography combined with detailed accompanying text.
For those of us unable to travel to such exotic locations or live during the time periods profiled, this monumental book offers such an opportunity.
This purchase is money spent wisely.
A great buy..........2000-05-01
A masterpiece collection from the masters of photography. A well compiled selection from the archives of NGM...this book is truly value for money. If you have espace on your coffe-table, buy this...
Customer Reviews:
Good overall, but very disappointing in places.......2006-03-02
Lonely Planet is the leader in travel books. This isn't just my opinion, I've met many other travelers who won't go anywhere without the appropriate LP book. Africa on a Shoestring is a great guide, with information on places to stay and what to see, for travelers who don't want to spend a fortune and aren't afraid to get out and actually experience the local culture.
That being said, I'm really disappointed in parts of this book. As the market leader, LP should be able to keep its books properly updated. Yet many country sections start with: "We were unable to do on-the-ground research in (country_name), so some information in this chapter may not be reliable". While this is understandable in someplace like Liberia or Cote d'Ivoire where the national security situation is volatile, it's inexcusable for countries like Nigeria. Yes, there are some problem areas in Nigeria, and Lagos can indeed be chaotic. But Nigeria is not Lagos. And Nigeria is not the Niger Delta. I certainly hope that they manage to update some of these chapters for the next edition.
In the interest of full disclosure, here are the countries LP didn't bother to update for this edition: Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire, Congo-Brazzaville, CAR, Congo-Kinshasa, Burundi, Somalia, Angola. Libya is listed as potentially being partially unreliable.
If you're traveling to Africa, my advice is to get this book _and_ the Rough Guide to whatever region of Africa you're going to. If you're going somplace that LP's book doesn't cover, look for a specific book that covers it. My last bit of advice for Africa travelers is to roll with the punches. There aren't nearly as many folks going to Africa as there are to Europe, so the information on Africa isn't as cutting-edge new. That hotel you read about and planned on staying in tonight? It burned down six months ago. But there are always other options, so just relax and take it easy.
good overview.......2005-10-17
It took so much to get there and I found it very comforting having this book to entice me along. Yes it was pretty general but it left us open to meeting people and having more excuses to dig for directions. Many times we were invited into people's homes, the ones that spoke English and French. I always prefer roughing it to clean ironed sheets and air conditioned rooms. Anglin writes well and although there are some holes, there's no book out there that is better for seeing the raw Africa.
Don't head for Africa without Africa on a Shoestring in your pack.......2005-09-06
As someone who just returned from a solo tour(via local buses, trains and hitch-hiking) through Botswana, Zambia and Namibia with this book in my pack I feel I can review it more fairly than those who have simply looked it over while dreaming about a future trip.
While no single book can give an indepth look at every country, this one gives you all the information you need to travel through Africa on a budget. Best of all it is small enough to fit in your pack and well built enough to make it through the trip in one piece. I will be going back next year and this book will be coming along.
As you can guess, with only about twenty five pages per country, some info is glossed over or left out all together. Due to space constraints Lonely Planet left out some of the "where to go and what to see" advice but they made sure to include all the information relevant to transportation and lodging. If you need more indepth information you should buy one of the individual guides that cover each country you plan to visit along with Africa on a Shoestring.
My one gripe with this book is that it seems a bit too focused on the backpacker/camper type lodging. I personally prefere to travel like the locals and stay in guest-houses and cheap hotels and at times this book skips right over this information. The worst way to save three dollars a night is to pitch a tent on the ground instead of booking into a local guest house. When you stay at one of the urban campsites the only "culture" you are going to experience is provided by the young, loud, drunken tourists. Not my idea of fun.
If you are looking for a book that will make traveling in Africa trouble free you are going to be disspointed, that book does not exist and never will. In Africa almost nothing is easy and that includes travel. But that is part of the adventure.
If you want to see Africa without all the hassle then you need to talk to one of the travel agents who offer all inclusive tours for small groups in large overland trucks. You will get some nice photos but you won't really be traveling "in" Africa, you will be traveling "over" it, and you don't need any book for that.
Coming home soon!.......2005-08-19
As an African-IN-America, I am interested in Africana and I read what I can about the homeland. It is my dream to one day retire to Africa and travel to all the lands that nourished my ancestors- Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia, Timbuktu....and all the magical names of our great cities and kingdoms.
This book is good for the geography and as a general overview of the continent, but it seems more written for Anglo-Euro visitors. Still, it is filling me with ideas of the places I'll see and it is making me work all the harder to make my dream a reality.
Africa- I'm coming home!
It's just too much for one book.......2005-05-13
I applaud LP for taking on the challenge of a book that covers the entire continent, but it's just too much for one book. I bought it in order to piece together an itinerary, but it doesn't do a good job in linking the countries together. Under the "suggested itineraries" it really just says it will depend on your money and time (uh, thanks, no kidding) and then tells you where NOT to go (Congo, Sierra Leone, etc)
The newest version is at least clumps groups of countries together. Mine is just a year old and has the countries in alpha order.
I would suggest buying the smaller books (LP East Africa, etc) instead.

Lonely Planet's ninth edition of Africa on a Shoestring (written by no less than 14 intrepid souls) begins with an extensive nuts-and-bolts chapter: visa requirements, vaccination information, how to score the cheapest airfares (couriers, charters, consolidators), suggested itineraries, medical checklists, safety precautions, etc. The countries themselves (48 in all) are listed alphabetically (Algeria to Zimbabwe), with major ones (Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa) getting the most space--lesser-known ones such as Angola and Liberia register fewer than 10 pages. As its name suggests, the book is chock-a-block with dirt-cheap suggestions on where to stay (from campsites to hotels), eat (street stalls to restaurants), as well as places to view wildlife (Masai Mara, Serengeti), tour ancient Casbahs (Morocco, Tunisia), or unwind on a tropical beach (the islands of Mozambique, Egypt's Red Sea resorts). The appendix is loaded with practical stuff like basic phrases in numerous languages (including Arabic and Swahili) and a glossary of common terms (medina, baksheesh, dhow). After reading Africa on a Shoestring, you'll definitely want to pack your knapsack and go. --Jill Fergus

Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction.......2005-10-20
As others note, the continent is too large to contain in one book for travel purposes. What this book does is give an EXCELLENT intro to history, culture, people, cities, regions,
and tourist attractions/locales/interests. Gives the mind a framework for Africa and potentially to guide decisions about vacation options. For actual travel, more specific literature is needed, but this book is an excellent opening to understanding and contemplating Africa. I was enthralled!
A great asset for African travel........2005-03-28
This book is great for those who are thinking about taking a trip to Africa or for those who have a general interest in the continent.
For those who would like to go to Arica(which I encourage people to do). This book will help you decide where you would like to go because of the many short chapters on each of the countries. After you decide where you want to go, I would recommend getting more up to date and detailed information because this book could use some more detail on individual countries.
I also liked this book for the brief histories on each of the countries. Much of this information is difficult to find and would require much time reading obscure books on the subject. These countries have facinating histories and the book does help to shed a little light on that subject.
The Area is Simply Too Large.......2004-06-23
I traveled through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, and Lesotho with this book. The book is excellent for major urban centers, but once you get beyond the city lights the text just stops and you are left on your own. If you plan on spending more than a week in a country, I recommend getting a regional guide at the very least and a country guide if you can get it (the Rough Guide in Kenya was superb).
LESS THAN A SHOELACE?.......2002-12-21
This book, "Africa on a Shoestring, 9th Ed" has a broad coverage; although its chapters are not as detailed as many tourists would expect them to be.
Again, this book would have been of better psychic value, had its authors showed confidence in the sections they dealt with. Its 'information' became a wet blanket for me. Many readers who intend to visit African countries are likey to be discouraged by its relentless pessimistic approach. Its outlook is more critical than 'touristical'. The general impression is this: "something good may not come out of Africa". That is shameful! The term "bush-taxi", which was used over and over again, in lieu of a more cordial 'local-taxi' sounds offensive.
I think that if written (or revised) without assumptive bias, this book would be of better quality and value to its users.
not recommended.......2001-05-15
I bought this book for my trip to Kenya Uganda and Tanzania. I thought that I might want to travel to Ethiopia or down to Zambia and Zimbabwe....this guide is much too condensed to be helpful, and most travelers I met hated this guide and would borrow or end up buying the LP East Africa guide. You would be much better off buying a regional guide rather then this monster. Just the weight of the book alone isn't worth carrying around with you. I actually ended up ripping this book to shreads and keeping only about ten pages of it then buying the more in depth East Africa Guide.
Don't get me wrong, I love the lonely planet guides. Just not this one. I can whole heartedly recomment the East Africa guide and the Trekking East Africa guide.

Book Description
Janusz Korczak was an author, radio personality, teacher, and doctor. But above all else he was a hero. As the beloved director of a Jewish orphanage in Warsaw, Poland, during the years of the Nazi Party's rise to power, he cared for hundreds of children. They loved him as a father and affectionately called him their "Old Doctor." Korczak could not save his children, but even in the darkest days of the Warsaw ghetto, he strove to protect them. Fianlly, forced to lead his orphans from the ghetto to the Treblinka death camp, Korczak remained with them to the end. This moving account of Janusz Korczak's life provides a powerful introduction to the tragedies of the Holocaust, but also highlights a remarkable story of courage in its midst.

A Great Man Whose Strenghth Showed in a Time of Crisis.......2004-10-21
This is a phenomenal book! Janusz Korczak, a writer, physician, and the ultimate child advocate, was also a great soul; indeed, if he had been born a Catholic he would be made a saint. He was a mixture of Dr. Benjamin Spock, Florence Nightingale, Patch Adams, and Mahatma Gandhi--rolled into one!
Choosing to stay with the orphans in the Jewish orphanage he directed, he protected the children through their forced move into the Warsaw Ghetto, and then to the death camp Treblinka. His diary is quoted throughout and we see a man who was very much afraid but who conquered his fears so that he could serve the tiny humanity in the person of the children in his care. Indeed, at one point he could have saved his own life if he had abandoned the children, but he refused to do so. The book ends with a quote from his diary which gives us true insight into his character: "I never wish anyone ill. I cannot. I don't know how it is done."
His life should have been one of happiness and fulfillment, of just deserved rewards for his goodness to others; however, like so many others, the Nazis terminated this great man far too soon. The illustrations are marvelous! They are rather like well done photographs.

Book Description
Everything Corgi: Wit and Wisdom for Lovers of Cardis and Pems is a book created to celebrate two enchanting and thoroughly endearing dog breeds: the Cardigan Welsh corgi and the Pembroke Welsh corgi, and to benefit CorgiAid, a nonprofit organization that helps with extraordinary expenses and medical treatment for corgi and corgi-mix rescue. The 33 chapters tell you everything you need to know about Finding Your Corgi, Taking Care of Your Corgi, and What Corgis Do, plus entertaining and poignant personal stories, and a delightful collection of Corgi Fun, Myth, and Magic. This book belongs by your side whether you already share your life with a corgi or hope one day to find your special one.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for the Corgi owner and the soon to be.......2007-08-13
Okay, I'm biased. I'm proud to have been a contributer and some small way to making this book possible. And it's a great book. If you have a Corgi (Pem or Cardi) or a Corgi mix, there are tips in here from some really experienced people. And stories, recipes (people and dog oriented) and pictures. A real delight for those of us who love the breeds. And if you're thinking about getting one, there's advice on how to pick one out, where to find one (hint, not at the pet store) and how to raise a well behaved dog. Not everybody's cut out to be a Corgi owner, but this book can hopefully help you decide.
And it benefits CorgiAid. I can't think of a better way to contribute to a great cause and get something useful in return.
Corgi Wit and Wisdom.......2007-05-13
This is a wonderful book for any Corgi lover, it has great stories, advice and, lots of fun things to read. What a great way to help Corgi aid. Highly recommended! Every Corgi owner should have this.
Great for Corgi lover.......2006-10-26
If you are adopting a corgi or thinking about getting one, this is the book for you. It contains all information you will need to know to raise such a wonderful creature. Love the book so much that I'm almost mad at myself for getting it so late that now mine is almost 3 years old. :)
It IS Everything Corgi.......2006-08-24
My wife and I have owned two cardigan welsh corgi's and they are the only breed for us. Bright, loving, beautiful, stubborn, loyal and hilarious, our two dogs have given us years of joy.
When our oldest died just three weeks short of his 17th birthday, we bought this book based on other reader's reviews in hopes of learning some information about breeders and how to deal with some behavioral issues exhibited by our now seven year-old, Morton. The book provided valuable knowledge and insights about these and other topics. If you're going to buy a book to learn about how to get your own corgi and raise him or her, this is the best volume I've read on the subject.
Corgis - "Let us entertain you".......2005-11-30
Everything you want to know or need to know about the two breeds. An excellent book on how to raise, train and care for any dog.
One thing I do not understand though, is why more people don't own corgis. They're not huge dogs, but they think they are and are one of the most trainable of dogs, plus they are a laugh a minute because no one can convince them they aren't "people". You just need to let them know who is the alpha and who isn't. It doesn't take them long to figure this out, either. It is because, as I said, they are one of the most trainable of dogs.
Book Description
Pembrokes and cadigans are related breeds of Welsh Corgi, and are described together here. This volume is filled with handsome, full-color photos, instructive line art, and easy-to-read tables and charts. It provides information on all aspects of pet care for new and prospective pet owners.
Customer Reviews:
Great book about Corgis.......2007-03-09
I bought this book while I was still puppy-hunting, and it was great. It has lots of tips and breed-specific info about both Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and was invaluable in helping me locate a good breeder and find the best puppy for us. It also has great tips for when you first bring your puppy home, and is full of gorgeous color pictures. A+.
A great introduction to a wonderful breed of dogs.......2003-07-04
If you already are familiar with the corgi breed, you'll love this book because it's filled with marvelously appealing photos of corgi puppies! There's an unusual number of great photos, unusual even for a book about the breed.
The book also is right on the money with advice on how to raise your corgi to avoid behavior problems. These are working dogs, and if they are trained properly (and it's easy) they are a delight, but without that training they can dominate the household and be a real nuisanced. It's clear that the author knows a lot about the breed.
Most dog books are about dogs in general, with little about the particular breed. You get the impression that there's a general dog book on the word processor that's customized slightly for each breed. This is a book about corgis, written to be just about corgis, and full of great information that's useful for every corgi owner.
Lots of corgi-specific Info.......2001-10-30
The problem with many dog-related books is that they contain a few dozen pages related to the breed & the rest is filled with generic information that pertains to all breeds. This book in particular deals with corgis the whole way through. A great deal of helpful information concerning corgis appears within.
A great book for people narrowing down their breed selection.......2001-10-17
We purchased this book to help us learn more about Corgis, as we were pretty sure we wanted to add a Corgi to our family. This is a concise book, with much Corgi-specific info (though the requisite all-dog info sneaks in, too). Great photos. Showed it to a breeder, and she liked it a lot, too.
Not Everything I Was Hoping For.......2000-10-08
This book was informative on generally on how to care for, train and breed a dog. It explained the history and physical traits of the two Corgis, and had many great photos. My main problem with the book is that it did not go into details of the behavior and personality of Corgis. Already being the owner of a Pembroke, my hope for this kind of information was my main motive for buying this book. Overall, this seemed more like a book about dog care with some Corgi topics included rather than a book devoted to Corgi specifics. Still, the price is reasonable, and the book easy to read and reference. If you are a new owner of a Corgi, or looking to get one, without any dog info book yet, you should be satisfied with this. But, if you are looking to get a more detailed account of Corgi personality and ability, you may not be. I have not read any of the other Corgi books, so can not compare.
Book Description
As the breed's name tells, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi derives from Cardiganshire, Wales, where this tough and agile "dwarf" was used to control unruly cattle. A working farm dog, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi possesses a devilish fearlessness, required to nip at the heels of wild horses, and the intelligence of a fox, which his head and tail preferably resemble. Although low in stature, the Cardigan is not a "small dog" -- this enduring working dog is a down-to-earth canine, whose work ethic and spirit are only matched by his devotion to his family and genuine sincerity. The Cardi makes a superb addition to the right home and requires an owner who is responsible and available.
Richard Beauchamp, a well-respected judge, exhibitor and author, has provided a comprehensive, authoritative text including everything the new Cardi owner needs to know to raise and train this active and versatile dog. This Special Limited Edition, illustrated with over 135 color photographs, covers the origins and history of the breed in Wales and beyond, the breed's characteristics and requirements, the breed standard as well as puppy selection, housebreaking, home safety and puppy-problem prevention. The author also outlines the basic care of the Cardi, grooming, feeding and exercise.
Customer Reviews:
Original, comprehensive, breed specific.......2007-01-22
If you want to learn more about the Cardigan, or already love this wonderfull breed, you will like this book. So many breed books read like a generic dog book where only the breed name and pictures are changed. Information tends to apply to any dog. Not this one; it reads as if every word was written by someone who loves Cardigans. It is comprehensive and objective enough to help a potential Cardigan owner make a good decision and raise their dog well without boring you with too many things any dog lover would already know. Even the training and care sections are breed specific, taking into account the unique temprament of this dog.

great pictures, but could be more on just cardi's.......2001-07-16
all the pictures were great. and the book had lots of great info in it. there could have been more on the breed though. but overall i would buy it all over again.
an ok book.......2001-05-25
The book was ok. Very generic information though. Not really a lot of information about the breed. Good pictures though.
Worth less than its modest price..........1998-03-20
This boilerplate-based book has very little content that is actually Corgi-specific, and most of what it does have is a reprint of the AKC Pembroke Welsh Corgi standard. The history section is interesting and well-written albeit brief, and some of the generic copy is nicely illustrated with Corgi photos. The bulk of the book, however, is generic, with generic illustrations.
brief, concise book with excellent pictures of the breed.......1998-02-06
This book on the cardigan welsh corgi, although very brief is quite informative for those interested in owning the breed as a pet. The chapters focus on a physical description of the breed and general dog care information that can be applied to any dog breed. The pictures are beautiful. This would definitely be a beneficial book for young pet owners to read to help in caring for the family pet (cardigan welsh corgi).

Finally!.......2001-03-30
I was starting to get frustrated because the only books I could find on evergreens focused on trees and large shrubs. This book is not the same, it has plenty of information about evergreen perennials as well. The only draw backs are that it does not define regions where the plant may become semi-evergreen, and it lacks information on pests and diseases. But, it's a great place to start when you are looking for evergreens.

Book Description
Between the end of the nineteenth century and the eve of World War II, Africans displaced by colonial rule aggrandized the attainments of American blacks, creating an African american myth that played an important role in their religious, political and social life. This myth, while existing in direct contradiction to the intense discrimination faced by black people in the United States, provided Africans with an inspirational model upon which to improve their lives.
Africans on African-Americans traces the development of the African American myth and the way in which the Liberal Movement in South Africa looked to America for a formula for racial harmony that eluded their troubled country. While highlighting the strength of the African american myth, Gershoni also demonstrates that everywhere the myth had adherents it also had opponents, who insisted that the solution to Africa's ills lay in African culture and African peoples.
