We referred to this book frequently during our stay in Acadia. We didn't find any errors or misinformation, and so I'm giving it the highest rating because it served its purpose well.

Great and helpful book.......2007-06-12

This book helped our family find great places to stay overnight instead of the typical chain hotels. My husband found his new favorite restaurant in Portland off of the suggestions in the book. It was an out of the way restaurant and we would have never found that great find without the Frommer's book.

Great Book About Maine's Coastal Region.......2007-04-01

FROMMER'S MAINE COAST is a great book about the coastal region of Maine, filled with some interesting healthy diet and activity ideas. However, if you want a full picture, you also need to get THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO PORTLAND, MAINE (due out May 1st), FODOR'S MAINE COAST, 1ST EDITION, and THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO THE MAINE COAST, 2ND EDITION (due out June 1st). Even taken by itself, though, this book is a must-own.

Frommer's Maine Coast - Soso.......2006-08-02

I found this help guide to be a little vague. I was mostly looking for in-depth information regarding Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park - one of our country's best-kept secrets that is absolutely breathtaking! The book did not go into great detail. It only gets a 1 in my book!

Great little book on the Maine coast.......2007-05-16

I read a lot of travel books of all sizes, and I've traveled to Maine quite a bit. This little Frommer's guide is the best I've found for those who want an introduction to the Maine coast that they can carry around with them on their trip. On my first trip to Maine, I used it in tandem with a larger, more comprehensive book (Maine: An Explorer's Guide), which I consulted ahead of time and left at home because it was too cumbersome to carry around. (The larger book also tended to list lots of activities and places but lacked many of the pertinent details that are included in the Frommer's Guide.) The authors of the Frommer's Guide pack a lot of good information into a small volume, selecting their details carefully and reliably -- I found that all of their descriptions were on the mark, and all of their suggestions were well taken. (Without this book, for instance, I might have bypassed the spectacular Harpswell Peninsula.) You can't include everything in a little volume -- and for readers who want more, there are bigger, more comprehensive books out there. But I find myself returning again and again to this little guide every time I plan a trip to the Maine coast -- its focus is more on quality than quantity and it's extremely well organized, well written, and easy to use. It's also great at pinpointing places that are a little unusual and not overrun by tourists. Highly recommended!

Not quite what I hoped for, but still a good book.......2004-07-21

This book is not quite as comprehensive as I had hoped. At approximately 200 pages, it tries to cover the most popular areas of the Maine coast. It does list prices and reviews hotels - perhaps the best feature of all. The print is also quite small in this little guide. It is indeed portable/pocket size, but you may need other guides to help supplement the information given in this book.

Quick & Concise for on-the-go traveling.......2000-04-12

This book proved itself very useful for out weekend drive up the coast. Naturally, there are many places to stay or dine, but you can't list them all (in this "portable" book). However, we did need to purchase a Maine Highway Map for better directions. I wish I'd gotten the book BEFORE I made Hotel reservations!

Good Information.......2001-06-01

I took off one star due to the fact that all the people in this book are drawn fat and not enough truth was relayed regarding the takeover of Hawaii by the American capitalists-yes Hawaii was stolen for profit. However, this little guide is excellent in every other way: lots of Hawaiian words, ancient & traditional crafts, great maps & drawings, good immigrant/ethnic coverage, important state facts, & plenty of flora & fauna. Great for Hawaiian vacations, state reports, learning the USA, and for parents/teachers wanting a quick overview. Great value.

Sorely Disappointed.......2004-02-18

I purchased this book and was disappointed in that it is an OLD EDITION ... meaning that it is a 1989! It was advertised as a 21st editon, which it is - HOWEVER, I saw others here advertised by the YEAR and THOUGHT this book too was a much more recent printing. A 1989 can be purchased often in used books stores for $2 or $3, so I feel somehow misled on this purchase. My advice READ CAREFULLY...if you do not know the number of the editon...ask the year! I will offer 2 stars for the service and only because of expedient shipment and clean condition.

This book is a whopping 896 pages. Crammed with pricing of collectibles. For the most part, since it covers such a vast array of items, it is a worded listing of the object, and a price. Sprinkled on the bottom of the page, are a few of the more renouned items in a black and white photo. If you are an experienced antique dealer, trader, or rummager, this book is something to take along when you are "finding". It has the price list of everything out there, as long as you can figure out what those things are called.
The nice thing is that the price for this book, considering the size of the volume, you can't help but want it. Even if you only use it once, it will pay for itself, in knowing what market value is on the object.
In the car business they have NADA, in antiques they have the Kovell's price list. If you are into antiquing, this is a must have.

Not just for Floridians.......2004-10-26

This slim (64 pages), oversize book is crowded with photos of flowering Southern trees and a wide variety of palms. It would be better if it included a full picture of a tree showing it's growth pattern and not just pictures of the flowers or seeds. It is more inclusive for the palms, showing full-length photos besides the leaves.
It is indexed inside the back cover. The descriptions are interesting, telling some of the growth habits, and uses of each tree. One problem arises when 3 or 4 trees are shown on one page; it is difficult to tell which block of text matches which photo.
Overall, a useful and fairly comprehensive photo album of Florida's trees, filled with lovely, colorful pictures.

Florida's Fabulous Trees.......2003-11-12

This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn to identify the different trees common to Florida. I got this book when I bought a house and started thinking about landscaping, and wanted to be able to identify trees around here. Great photos, helpful text, I would definitely recommend it.

Really great pictures.......2003-04-22

This book has really great pictures in glorious color. That is just about all that can be said for or about this book.

The text is so-so: The worst offense appears (p43) "bansai trees" where they mean "bonzai trees", but the rest of the text is not nearly that bad. For a book on trees there are remarkably few trees in it. Something like half the book is palms.

The oversized pages make this a somewhat clumsy book. But the pictures are really, really great!

Great Picture Book.......2003-02-01

This is a great photo guide to Florida's trees. I wanted to identify some of the trees that we see on our annual vacations to Florida over the years and this book did the trick. It's not a technical horticultural guide but just a book with lots of pictures of hundreds of different species with foliage, flowers, shape, color and anything else you need to sucessfully identify tropical trees.

Like so many of us, Mark obviously loves tropical trees with gorgeous flowers. He has gathered together the best of the best and his photos are exceptional. Most of the trees covered are not just restricted to Florida but can be grown in other tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world.

This is really neat little book, well-printed and with top quality color pictures. The pictures are supported by brief and informative texts. The book gives a good overview of trees that blossom profusely with showy flowers and that are suitable for planting in the tropics. Beyond an emphasis on (C-& S-) American species and the use of Florida common names there is nothing in the book that ties it to Florida in particular.

Beautiful photos!!.......2001-04-03

Planning on a move to Florida from Michigan, I was lost as to what kind of trees to landscape my large yard with. This book is wonderful! Especially helpful are the clear, color photos of both the flowers close-up, and then the entire tree in its flowered state. These pictures show the trees "shape" when full grown also. I'm so glad I got this, it will definitely help with my decisions on what trees to buy!!

This is a great reference book for flowering trees. The photos are outstanding. Includes a view of the whole tree and then a close-up of the flowers. Also good info about each tree.

I live in Southern California and most (if not all) can also be grown here. I want them all!

Outstanding photography with easy to read descriptions........1999-05-19

This book is an excellent reference book for Florida trees. The photography is absolutely beautiful. It allows the reader to easily identify a tree and then read about it as a layman or a more advanced horticulturist.

I believe it is a must buy for newcomers to Florida as well as anyone interested in flowering trees in the south.

A must for your Florida flora collection.

Excellent account related honsestly and candidly.......1998-01-29

I enjoyed reading Mrs. Kidd's book. I am currently a returning student at Florida State University and read this account for a class I'm taking regarding Mental Health for Women and Minorities. Mrs. Kidd's account was so very well written that I can imagine her sweet and genteel voice. I can also envision her standing up for her constituional rights at moments in her life that challenged her values and belief systems. I reccommend all people read this moving account in order to reach a higher level of cultural sensitivity and understanding for another race (I am white), as well as a viewpoint from an elder citizen, and memories as well as experiences and achievements for a woman living in a world of male domination. Mrs. Street Kidd's recollections are moving and very enlightening.
