Pretty helpful.......2007-07-10
I bought this book prior to our one-week vacation outside of Ensenada. The information was very good and up-to-date (which is hard to accomplish sometimes in ever changing Mexico). I used it mostly for suggestions on site-seeing, restaurants, accommodations, and wineries.
The map for Ensenada and the surrounding area was pretty good (better than anything else I could find), but the map for Tijuana wasn't that helpful. We were re-routed to the Otay Mesa border crossing but were not able to locate it because it was not listed on the map. We ended up having to figure out another route to the San Ysidro border crossing.
I live in San Diego, so I will likely continue to use this book as reference for when I venture to the other side of the border.
Baja Guide.......2007-02-16
My interest was in Nature of the Baja Penninsula and the Pacific Coast. The Baja Handbook gives an excellent summary of what is there but also, especially in the case of the Whales, something of their life cycle. It was a very usefull Guide for my purposes
Better than Lonely Planet Book.......2006-12-26
I purchased the lonely planet book first, then misplaced it. Then I found this book and i have to say it is much better. The history, natural history and other tidbits included made me that much more excited about traveling in Baja. Not to mention it is more thoroughly written, better descriptions of destinations and how to get there. I feel this book will better prepare me for the trip. As others have already mentioned it's not just a great book on Baja, its a superbly written travel book in general.
Unpretentious and Comprehensive.......2005-12-24
This is an unpretentious travel book but fairly thick almost 600 pages long. I say unpretentious because unlike many other travel books it features mainly black and white photographs that give it a certain aura like an old black and white movie that seems to suit the Baja. The book is very detailed like a Michelin guide with page after page of details and information on all aspects of the Baja peninsula including roads, maps, beaches, entertainment, restaurants, hotels, etc. It is an excellent guide and makes a nice souvenir.
Cummings Covers the Waterfront...And the Backroads.......2005-10-17
You couldn't ask for a better travel book on Baja. I found myself reading it repeatedly on my trip, not just for hotel and restaurant info, but like a novel--for the sheer pleasure of it. The sidebars and thumbnail histories are so well-researched and expertly delivered that I rank it not just among the best travel books on Mexico, but among the best books of any kind. The concise discussion of the ejido system and of the changing rules for foreign real estate purchases are just two small examples. Cummings touches on every aspect of Mexican society and its interaction with the people to the north, in addition to giving the essentials on gas stations and bus schedules and airports and resorts-all in the delightfully understated style that has become his hallmark.
Especially useful for me were his mention of side roads that lead away from the transpeninsular highway into the mountains of the interior. I took a number of them and often found pristine desert, unchanged for centuries. The route from Loreto to the Mission of San Javier was particularly good. The landscape was similar to Arizona, except that many canyons had oases of palm trees with only the cries of roosters and goats breaking the silence so that you could feel you were in a bygone time in ancient Mexico or Mesopotamia. Cummings calls the road suitable only for 4wd high clearance vehicles. It must have been improved since, because I drove it with an economy rental car with wheels the size of oreos and a hefty 3.5 inches of clearance. If one proceeds slowly and carefully there is no problem, though I would not have gone on if there were any sign of rain.
The best beach by far that I found was that of Todos Santos. It is very clean and unsullied by automobiles, probably thanks to a sign near the parking area that not only warns against taking vehicles onto the beach, but also notes the amount of prison time assigned to violators. And the waves are fabulous: 15' rolling tubes that explode into 40' towers of spray, a natural drama one can watch for hours with only pelicans and the occasional crab for company. It's typical of Cummings' sense of the drama of travel that he tells the best way to get to this great beach: "follow Calle Topete across the palm-filled arroyo...the first sand road on the other side...turn left just before the low rock wall...", but let's you find out on your own what a delight the access road itself is: an inconspicuous lane that runs about a half mile between high stone walls on one side and a line of mango trees on the other, ending in a tunnel through a thicket of bamboo that emerges onto the parking area (shaded!). Bicycles and walkers are on an equal footing with autos, and the tiny scale of the sandy track almost compels you to roll down your window and say hola. Ojala that it stays that way.
Playa San Pedrito, a dozen miles to the south, is also charming and unspoiled, but far from any place to buy food and drink. Punta Conejo, sixty miles to the north, is the most desolate section of Pacific coast I've ever walked. In three days I saw not one person, nor one bit of shade of any kind: no palapas, no trees, no cliffs...even the towering cacti keep at least a quarter mile between themselves and the surf at all times. If Mexico were a nanny state, one would be required to purchase a parasol before venturing onto the beach.
The beaches on the other side of the peninsula are also very nice, but lack large waves, the Sea of Cortez being much like the Red Sea, a huge body of saltwater separated from the ocean by miles of desert. I was there in September, and I often had to get out of the water to cool off, rather than the reverse, which holds true on the Pacific year round. The eastern coast of Baja is probably ideal in January and February. Here, too, Cummings is comprehensive. Nothing escapes his notice, with the exception of the exceptional qualities of the Hotel Moro just outside Santa Rosalia. Senor Espinosa's rambling hacienda style hotel is a work of art. Cummings makes unjustly short shrift of it in calling it "tourist-oriented". I would call it beauty-oriented, with its elegant terrace overlooking the water, and its aviary, and its cool pool set in a profusion of tropical flowers. It's a far greater value than the "venerable Hotel Frances", where you pay twice the money for a room in the midst of a lovingly restored industrial plant far from the water.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to Use.......2003-08-30
I gave this guide 5 stars because it is the most complete and easiest guide of Baja out there. I found this book to be very complete. Even two building towns where you can just buy gas and eat are mentioned in this guide. It contains most of the "necessary" maps within its pages, but I would recommend buying a map devoted to the area in which you plan to go. I found this book to be up to date, but I have spent the most time in the northwest part of Baja. I also own the Lonely Planet guide to Baja and I much prefer the Moon's guide (mainly because in my experience it is more complete).
The format of the guide is also very easy to use. The information is laid out in a very logical format. You can just look through the book to find something to do in the area you are going, rather than needing to know what you want to do and then finding out where you can do it.
comprehensive but not selective.......2002-10-10
If you're spending 2 months driving down and up, this would be a great book. But Cummings doesn't provide much advice for the person who only has a week or so to spend in Baja and must pick and choose. Even after reading the whole book you don't get a sense for what are the nicest destinations. This is important because a lot of Baja destinations are popular for people with a passion for a particular activity and if you don't enjoy that activity you'll probably feel trapped there.
Tip: If you must go to Cabo, avoid Cabo San Lucas and the Corridor and stay in San Jose del Cabo (a real Mexican town closer to the airport). Also rent the heaviest SUV that you can and drive the coast road (dirt) out to Los Frailes for snorkeling and camping on the beach (dogs are welcome).
A great book for the Baja traveler, especially if driving........2002-02-08
First I want to compare the 4th edition of this book with the third. Most of the changes in the 4th edition are the color maps and updated info on the Cabo area. While the maps are nice, there are better sources for Baja maps.
Now back to the review of the book itself. I love this book, I have the 2nd and 3rd editions also, and they have been used extensively for Baja travel. While the road conditions and prices obviously will change they are good guidelines of what to expect. I think this book is most suited to travelers that are driving and offers great info on side trips off the beaten path. The road conditions regarding if 4wd is required is helpful, even if things could have changed since publication. Also great info for boaters especially concerning boat ramps, and fuel availability.
I found the hotel ratings to be pretty accurate about the conditions and facilities. In my opinion the best book published on general Baja travel.
Lots of inaccuracies.......2001-09-02
Although this book contains lots of good information, it has too many inaccuracies. It looks as though the author has not updated his database of accommodations. I found too many wrong phone numbers, wrong mailing addresses and wromg email addresses. I know these things change, but if they have all really changed this much, there should be a disclaimer or they should not be included at all.
There are two pages of what the author calls "Useful Web sites", but they are not very useful and he does not include any web sites for the many listed accommodations and resorts that have their own web sites.

Harlem Postcards by Siskind.......2004-01-02
It was barely worth the four bucks I paid. Most of the pictures were too dark or of poor subject matter. I was born and raised in Harlem, so I know. I kept four of the thirty postcards in the book and threw the rest away.
Postcard pictures of Harlem circa the drpression.......2000-10-16
It has been said that a picture can say 1000 words. These postcards are indicative of that. The national museum of art has released a book of postcards by Aaron Siskind entitled Harlem the 30's. A wonderful collection of depression era photographs depicting harlem at that time. Most books about Harlem seem to mostly be preoccupied with the Harlem Renaissance and the people around that time. Harlem the 30's is about a different time a time after the renaissance when the depression hit the country. The collection is a real snapshot of what it was like to live , work, and play in Harlem in the 1930's. These 30 black and white postcards are not of celeberties but of real people from professionals to the street vendors to the children, even the homeless. Well worth it if you are a collector of B&W postcards like myself, or like want to see a good piece of history.
Book Description
In 1939, Bill Traylor, at the age of 84, began to create his own extraordinary history of drawing. In three years the former slave, field hand and factory worker produced over 1500 works that are now regarded as a major achievement in 'outsider art.' Contains 30 removable color postcards. Size 6 7/8 x 4 3/4 inches.
Book Description
The address book of Carl Van Vechten, novelist, critic, and photographer, could easily have been mistaken for a Who's Who of American luminaries in the arts, academe, civil rights, and politics. From the 1930s until his death in 1966, he photographed significant African American men and women of genius-friends, acquaintances, and those he admired. The 24 detachable postcards in this book include photographs of Marian Anderson, Josephine Baker, James Baldwin, Cab Calloway, W. E. B. DuBois, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Mahalia Jackson, and Richard Wright.

A VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION TO LANDSCAPE HISTORY.......2005-10-18
Since the climate is not conducive to gardening, many may be surprised to learn that Russia has some of the most beautiful gardens and parks in the world. What better way to visit them but from the comfort of an easy chair with garden historian Peter Hayden as your guide?
A former chairman of the Garden History Society and an honorary member of the Swedish Society for Dendrology and Park Culture, Hayden knows his subject well. He's the ideal person to compile "Russian Parks and Gardens," which is the first comprehensive history of Russian landscape to be printed in English. Many of the photos included in this volume were taken by Hayden himself and had not been published outside of Russia. There's a wealth to enjoy in 256 pages highlighted by 165 color photographs and 100 archive illustrations.
Hayden's history covers more than 800 years beginning with the initial gardens in the 12th century. We learn that it was Peter the Great who first introduced formal gardens to his homeland by bringing designers and plants from Holland, France, Germany, and Italy. Today St. Petersburg's Summer Garden, which covers 27 acres, is the most popular open space in all of Russia.
What is known as the English style of landscaping was brought to Russia by Catherine the Great who hired British gardeners to design parks for the privileged. In addition, many parks and gardens were created by wealthy families who had the wherewithal to do so, as well as access to thousands of serfs to do the work.
Naturally, the Revolution took its toll on quite a number of Russia's parks and gardens but many have been restored so that they are even more glorious today.
"Russian Parks and Gardens" is an amazing contribution to the annals of landscape history, and a joy to behold.

Customer Reviews:
A Textbook I Will Hang onto Long After the Class.......2007-09-13
As a graphic design student, I purchased this book as the required text for my Typography I class. The school has been using Designing with Type for years and it is easy to see why. The information is clear, consice, and covers everything from the history and naming of typefaces to the nitty gritty technical information. The definitions of technical terms, measurements, and industry standards are incredibly useful and are supported by visual examples throughout the entire book. The glossary in the back is also a great reference to some common and and popular typfaces. One thing to note, a lot of these reviews refer to the spiral bound (4th ed.), which unfortunately is no longer a feature in the 5th edition.
Designing with Type: The Essential Guide to Typography.......2007-01-09
I have used this book for a number of years, along with a number of other books on typography, as primary reading for my Typography 1 class that I teach at a design school. It is an excellent resource for the student who is just starting out and learning the fundamentals of design.
pleased typography student.......2006-09-16
I am a second year Communication Design student at a prestigious (pretentious) art school in New York City. This year marks my first foray into typography, and this book was the first recommendation on my to-buy list.
Anyone who is at least vaguely familiar with the concept of typography knows that most type enthusiasts range from "I didn't realize there was that much involved" to "Oh my god, you even named your child after a typeface." (I didn't know that's what they meant by "font family.") But seriously, folks: for those not yet versed in the trials and tribulations contained within passionate pursuit of the perfect sans-serif, typography can be very intimidating.
When I bought DWT 5 -- because I had to, remember -- I expected a tome comparable to the tedious scrolls of a monastery scribe; typography was to be my new religion and I was ok with that. Thankfully, that's not how my experience with DWT played out at all.
First of all, it's actually a book, complete with pleasing cover that isn't obnoxiously heavy and is able to withstand backpack fare. It's solid and smooth and looks good on my shelf -- apparently an improvement over earlier editions. But this is hardly the reason for my enthusiastic review.
The truth of the matter is, the "hands-on" way this book approaches the art of teaching typography is beyond superb. In fact, it's so superb, it makes me want to jump into a rambling anecdote -- so bear with me.
I once had a beyond awful chemistry teacher. Awful because he was dryer than a saltine and refused to get off his wrinkly behind to put some damn liquid over a Bunsen and show us the magic of the science. Don't get me wrong here -- chemistry is and should be treated with academic respect and precision. It is surely a very "logical" subject, in that the math-based reasoning behind the formulas and the calculations and the diagrams and the nomenclature is all very structured. But the propensity by which one can dive into the circuitous lexicon of chemical confoundry makes it easy to forget that a chemist is actually dealing with the stuff that makes up our physical world. Being a visual person, it would kill me to sit for an entire hour and a half doing worksheets and readings and spar in lofty conversations without doing so much as one experiment to demonstrate. I mean, it was pretty simple -- I wanted to SEE what the hell it was we were talking about. And sure enough, when we WOULD actually do an experiment, I was able to link the lofty ideas with the visual responses, and it would all be clear as day.
This is the hands-on approach I describe as being taken on by DWT. Craig makes no mistake in realizing that typography IS the book, and uses this to his advantage by creating ACTUAL TYPOGRAPHIC EXAMPLES to explain the principles of type. It's one thing to be told that Bodoni is much easier to read because of its simplified serifs, but to actually SEE Bodoni set in multiple iterations makes the difference between remembering and absorbing. It's as if Craig is stopping in the middle of his lecture, walking over to you, and drawing for you on your paper exactly what he means. Not to mention he does it in a clear and simple layout that it probably unique to edition 5.
I was ready to dread my typography readings, expecting them to be a series of formulas. Now I look forward to seeing all the neat explosions and chemical reactions, and to wondering how I'll fit them into my next layout. But don't go too fast with it Craig, take it slow -- this is introductory level, after all, and I'm not ready to put Helvetica on the birth certificate yet.
New edition and companion website are great for typography classes........2006-09-10
This new edition (5) is a great textbook for the beginning typography class; thorough, well-written and illustrated, highlighting the most important things a beginning designer must know. It is very engaging and easy to read. Students will benefit greatly not only from using the book in class, but having it in their design library for the future. Professors will find it a great resource, along with it's wonderful companion website, which contains a vast resource of lecture material, visual samples, links and project assignments with examples of student work.
New Fifth Edition is Even Better .......2006-06-17
This is the new fifth edition of this classic book on typography that first began in 1971. Since then it has become a standard of the industry. It's real strength is how it describes fonts from the standpoint of conveying feeling, readability, aspects of fonts that you wouldn't normally think about.
Type is an important part of graphics art. It is likely that in most projects type is what covers most of the page. Through the use of the proper type face, size, and special effects type can be used to assist in the conveyance of information which is what graphics art is all about.
This book has been around for some thirty-five years. It is the standard text in design schools around the world. For this fifth edition it has been redesigned, printed in full color and had much new material added without omitting features that have made the book such a valuable tool.
Book Description
Provides a definitive visual survey of type to help the typographer use type to best effect. It features: profiles of influential designers; the qualities that make a type design effective; characteristics, applications, and creative uses of each of the seven major typeface groups; special typographic effects; and advantages and disadvantages of desk top publishing typography. A hands-on design guide for typographers, graphic artists, desk top publishers, and advertising production people who want to sharpen their attention to detail and develop a sensitive typographical eye.
Customer Reviews:
Worths to read again and again.......2000-07-06
To those who wants to know more about typography, this book teaches you enough required knowledge so you can study more advanced subjects. It offers a brief but useful introduction on the history of typography. I'll recommend this book to anyone who is interested in typography.
Time for an update........2000-06-09
I have reviewed and ordered this book as a text for my Typography students. It is very encompassing and thorough, providing many examples of typefaces and type usage. I probably would have given this review 5 stars if this was not the same publication that appeared in 1992. This book is worth keeping refreshed. The authors have gone to great lengths to provide excellent "contemporary" examples, so after 8 years it is time to address the issue of contemporary. Still, it is the best I could find out of many, and have adopted it for my course.

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from European Journal of Operational Research, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
This paper presents a practical approach for designing a quantity-discount (''qd'') scheme for a manufacturer who supplies a newsvendor-type product to a large number of heterogeneous retailers. The main components of our approach are: (i) an information structure for handling a large number of heterogeneous retailers with changing identities; and (ii) expected-profit expressions for any given qd scheme. We show that these expected-profit expressions can be easily optimized to produce attractive qd schemes; also, these schemes are shown to be quite robust against errors in parameter estimation. As a significant by-product, our multi-retailer scenario provides a more meaningful framework for designing manufacturer-perspective qd schemes, since we also show in this paper that a single-retailer scenario leads to a degenerate problem.
