    Book Description

Ping and his friends are hungry. Their tummies rumble and grumble, so they search the forest but cannot find enough leafy bamboo to eat. When Ping discovers a big patch of bamboo, he greedily keeps it all for himself. But when his friends move far away in search of food, Ping learns an important lesson about sharing.

                  3 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-05-13

I bought this book hoping it would be helpful for the Solomon Islands. There was only about 30 pages about the Solomons. This book is a great guide for Papua New Guinea. I would suggest looking for older guides. I bought an older guide from lonely planet that was strictly about the Solomon Islands. It was much better, only the finacial info was definitely out of date.

3 out of 5 stars Wish there was more information about various locations.......2007-01-03

The book does not really give sufficient information about the villages which are, in fact, memorable experiences. Nonetheless, I am not aware of a better source for information about places in PNG and so recommend that someone traveling to PNG buy this book. There are a few other good books about the culture and art.

2 out of 5 stars A Very Poor Guide! :-(.......2006-06-08

Once upon a time, Lonely Planet had a good guide to Papua New Guinea (371 pages), and an excellent one to the Solomon Islands (279 pages). For better or worse these fascinating countries don't exactly attract hordes of holidaymakers, so after leaving those books unupdated for many years, the publisher has now decided to dump them together in this new edition (272 pages).
The result is basically a new, much slimmer guide to Papua New Guinea, with fewer than 30 pages on the Solomons (where it only actually covers half the country even nominally).
Not only has much of the detail been thrown out, the quality of information has also gone downhill sharply! :-(
The authors have very obviously never visited even major tourist destinations of PNG described in the book - as confirmed by owners of accomodations included in it, who told me they had merely received phonecalls from the author who didn't even visit most of the Sepik Region or the Highlands, for example!
Much of the "updating" seems to have been done by surfing the web, and as a result the book abounds in recommendations for expensive, upmarket places and tour-operators that do have websites, while completely ignoring cheaper, budget guesthouses which have no info on the net. Even excellent, small locally owned places that were in previous editions of the PNG guide are conspiciously missing! And as for what the authors consider "budget": their itinerary recommended for budget travellers includes staying at a 150 USD/night resort!

This book is a real shame to Lonely Planet.
If you are planning on resort-hopping on a short holiday, it will be sufficient, but if you want to explore these two countries in depth without spending a fortune, you are far better off trying to find copies of the now out-of-print old editions, which still contain far more useful information than this new guide.
Check Amazon for reviews and availablity of the old Papua New Guinea guide and Solomon Islands one.

Another cheap little book that may well enrich your travels in either of the two countries is LP's Pidgin Phrasebook.
Those keen on getting way off the beaten track in PNG on foot will still find Bushwalking in Papua New Guinea invaluable!

The Out of Many Teaching and Learning Classroom Edition brings together a wide array of assets to provide a completely integrated multimedia learning experience. This path breaking text weaves together the complex interaction of social, political, and historical forces that have shaped the United States and from which the American people have evolved by telling stories of people and of the nation and emphasizing that American history has never been the preserve of any particular region. The text's trademark continental approach has been expanded to incorporate a greater hemispheric perspective, while community and memory feature analyzes the role and the conflict of historical memory in shaping communities' understanding of the past. For individuals interested in United States history .

Lots of other pet travel books have lists of hotels and motels that accept pets, but without much description. I hoped this book would provide narrative descriptions of great vacations possibilities with my dog, but, apart from a section on "Dog Camps", was only another (and not very good) listing of accommodations that accept dogs. For that, the AAA Book is better. How about a book that features the BEST places that cater to dogs and their owners (e.g. with special pet services, doggy 'day care', dog runs) rather than just tolerate them. I'd love a book with 50 or 100 great places that cater, with descriptions and reviews, rather than another list of places that accept dogs. Besides this, its just poorly printed. Save your money.

I purchased this book and a few other pet travel guides at the same time. I ended up returning this book. The wording on the pages resemble a kidnapper's ransom note. There are better ones out there.

                                                Book Description

This is the first book devoted solely to bulbophyllums, a very diverse group of orchids comprising the largest genus in the orchid family; it is an introductory guide for amateur and advanced orchid growers. The author focuses on those species likely to be cultivated, including 375 Bulbophyllum species and 170 related species and hybrids; she gives practical suggestions on how best to grow each plant in cultivation.

                                                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Sorry , Only Few Picture.......2007-08-12

If you want this book as a reference to your bulbophyllum collection, Yes it's. Many species described. But if you want to know how the bulbophyllum looks like, sorry it is not an answer to your inquiry. Very few pictures.

3 out of 5 stars Could be a lot better..........2001-12-04

The pictures are nice. On the other hand, relatively few of the plants are pictured, and the descriptions are often too general. There's usually some detail, such as petal length, etc., but few of the flowers are described in a manner that would allow you to know what it looks like.
Some of the cultural information includes a prescription to use "nice media" or other not-so-useful text.
Most of the descriptions are accompanied by some elevation information, or at least temperature guidelines, and watering information.
I think this book is best used if you have a plant in mind, have a pretty good idea of what the flower looks like, and want to find out if you have a good chance at making it happy. Since the book isn't all that expensive, this and the pictures probably provide enough value to warrant a purchase. If the descriptions were better, this book would be a must-have.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but nonetheless disappointing.......2001-10-04

I wasn't quite sure how to rate it, and decided to give it the benefit of the doubt, as it were. I'd be tempted to give it a 3.5 because while it's very good, it's faults are rather glaring, IMO.

Coverage of species is, overall, far better than any work I know of (and certainly better than anything easily available), but there are relatively few pictures, and not a single line drawing for any of the species not pictured -- out of 550 species and hybrids mentioned, there are only 77 photos! I don't know whether that was Ms. Siegerist's doing or Timber Press cutting back on production costs, but it's a glaring gap.

I've been waiting for this book for months, and while I'm not sorry I bought it and will refer to it often, I was expecting more.

                                                  Book Description

In the eighth book of his treatise Of the Lawes of Ecclesiasticall Politie, Richard Hooker defends the royal headship of the Church of England in a remarkable series of theological arguments. His apologetic intention was 'to resolve the consciences' of the Disciplinarian-Puritan critics of the Elizabethan Settlement by a demonstration that the Royal Supremacy was wholly consistent with the principles of doctrinal orthodoxy as understood and upheld by the Magisterial Reformation. This study commences with a look at some current problems of interpretation and then examines Hooker's apologetic aim and methodology. Subsequent chapters demonstrate Hooker's reliance on the teaching of the Magisterial Reformers in the formulation of both the soteriological foundations of his political thought and his ecclesiology. Hooker's appeal to the authority of Patristic Christological and Trinitarian Orthodoxy in support of the Royal Supremacy is also discussed. The purpose of this book is to uncover the theological roots of a central aspect of Hooker's political thought, and thereby to attempt to shed new light on an important Elizabethan controversy.

An excellent memoir that shares the difficulties of what life was like during the Great Depression and the affect that it had on millions of adolescents in the United States during the 1930's. Sgt. Hutchinson then describes the traumatic experiences for these young men in the air war in Europe and the R and R in London, England. This book is a must read for the young people of today to gain an appreciation for the accomplishments of the "Greatest Generation."

What a great way to educate yourself on the daily life of a WWII veteran. This is a very interesting book! I was riveted with the terrific details and stories. It is amazing that our grandfathers and fathers did such amazing things at such a young age. We truly owe them our respect and admiration. After reading this book, it is easy to see why this generation is called "The Greatest Generation".

What a great book! As an aviation fanatic, it was interesting to read about the technical aspects of the "Flying Fortress" from a first hand point of view. The physical rigors of fighting the Germans at 25,000 feet in 40 below conditions and on oxygen for many hours lets one know the sacrifices the air crews made. I also enjoyed reading about what it was like to grow up in the depression. The discipline the young people learned at an early age shows why they are indeed the "Greatest Generation"

Through These Eyes fully gives you a sense of what it was like growing up during the depression and the encounters of those (boys) who fought in WWII. Hutch's experiences are priceless and should be read by all to fully understand the sacrifices made by all those who fought for our freedom.

                                                    Book Description

Frank "Lindy" Fancher was born May 19, 1919 in rural Hart County, Kentucky, the son of Ben Fancher a Tobacco farmer. In October of 1940, he enlisted in the 106th Cavalry Illinois National Guard and entered Federal Training on December 6th 1940. Thus began Lindy's military experience, one that would forever leave indelible memories of great sorrow and joy. This is the story of those experiences. It is a story for this generation and future ones that reminds us that freedom is not "free" and that this country was won through hardship and bloodshed. It is also a story of the transition from boyhood to manhood and how the war forever changed that.

5 out of 5 stars An authentic account of one man's World War II experiences.......2005-07-13

This is not literature or anything like a Stephen Ambrose book. It's a simple account of one man's experiences during World War II. It's written in a conversational style that one might find while sitting in the bar of a local VFW or American Legion post.

Mr. Fancher tells his story. It's funny, tragic, heroic and honest. His courage during the Battle of the Bulge (where he recieved his Battlefield Commission) and during his campaign in Germany (where he received the Silver Star) are nothing short of remarkable. He also shares some escapades during his time in Paris prior to and during V-E Day that make this book inappropriate for younger audiences.

It took a tremendous amount of courage to live through that time and even more to write about it so candidly. If you enjoy hearing an old soldier's story in his own words, than this is the right book for you.

                                                      Book Description

Through the eyes of a child many negatives as well as positives are seen. The negatives often outweigh the positives. As a child, Johnny Bodley?s eyes saw and his lips tasted the dregs from life?s bitter cup many times. Through the peepholes of his eyes he saw the negatives daring him to stare at the positives, or even think that life could be good. This book contains some of the ABC?s he learned about while being a troubled youth growing up on the streets of segregated Selma, Alabama. It also shows his triumphant rise from street corner beggar and notorious thug child to a respectful man after being on an extremely dangerous journey. Many of the letters of this alphabet weren?t good for him but he had to endure; his life depended on some of them: Abuse/Bigotry, Corruption/Desertion, Evil/Exclusion, Fright/Good, Hate/Hunger/Happiness, Injustice/Justice, Kindness/Love, Murder/Need, Oppression/Poverty/Racism/Rejection, Sadness/Togetherness, Ugliness/Victory, and Waste.

I was in your class with mrs. murphy and I just want to say that I understand what you have gone through. I grew up differnt but also the same. I wasnt treated badly by other people but my own father. I am now in school and I too have over came alot. I honestly feel that anyone can accomplish their dreams if they work hard at it. Hell, you know we was not born with a silver spoon in our mouths but look at where we are today and I think that it is by the grace of God that you and I are here today to tell our stories. I also had abuse, not only physical but emotional.I had to raise myself. It was hard for a 14 yr old white girl to make it through without parents, but I'll tell you one thing my parents taught me, I will learn from their mistakes and I will one day be a wonderful mother.

                                                      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful life change.......2003-09-09

                                                      Dear Johnny,
Your book is not only enlightening, and revealing of the historical south during tumultuous times, but it ties in to the way troubled youth grew up in the south, and the obstacles they had to overcome. You had a second chance, and have made your life a role model to those who feel there is no hope. You turned your life around to help others, what better way to pay tribute to those who loved you and guided you through trouble times.

Johnny, These Eyes is a really great and excellent book because like when you were going through all those things it was like I was there with you. Especially that part about when you went to Mt. Meigs, and when that evil man burst your thighs. I wish he could have been there on that cold ground and felt your pain. I just took a moment to say a prayer for you. I know it was hard back then but I really felt sorry for you when you didn't have any clothes and had to eat out of garbage cans. That's when I cried for you the most. But when I read about when your mother died my eyes were red all night like fire. But if I could have just jumped into the book I would have given you a big fifth grader hug because I love you very much with them pretty green eyes. I pray that God bless you more than He already has... From your best friend Ashley Lewis 10 years old... The end!

The book "These Eyes" was very inspirational for my nine-year-old son Benjamin and me. I attended one of his seminars at (Christian Community Church) on December 20th, 2002 after reading the book twice. Listening to him I realized that threatening to send my son off to reformatory school because of his impulsive actions would be a big mistake. That it would only make him worse. With this information coming directly from Johnny, someone who has experienced this first hand I know it's fact. Also by reading "These Eyes" I was very emotionally touched by the things society would put an eight-year-old through, whether it was back in the day down south or 2003 up north, all the horrible things he had to see, hear, and experience at such an early age. I was very sadden deeply at the many struggles of life he had to face at such early stages of his life. The book has taught me to be more appreciative and grateful of my own childhood years, and for those of my 3 and 9 year olds. My son was eight years old when I purchased the book and to read about an eight-year-old child going through what Johnny went through was very touching. I am very grateful to the Lord for letting me get to know Johnny and become part of his life. He indeed is a very special person. I also thank the Lord for sparing his life and for him reaching back out to help other people. May God forever keep him as well as bless him in all that he does.
