4 out of 5 stars Left me wanting more........2005-03-27

Personally, I rate Dr Ballard's books; The Discovery of the Titanic, Lost ships of Guadalcanal, Return to Midway and Exploring the Lusitania as some of the finest works on the subject of shipwrecks ever to have been published. On this occasion, however, I am left with a feeling of disappointment at finding such a thin book.

Perhaps anything short of the discovery of another Titanic would always be a disappointment to some - but let us examine the content. Firstly, we have 5 of the world's greatest ever shipwrecks; Titanic, Empress of Ireland, Lusitania, Britannic and Andrea Doria. Each of these vessels was a great ship in it's own right and their like will never be seen again. Indeed, entire books have been written about each of them - by this author and by others. As with all great shipwreck stories, there is always an element of mystery - arguments for and against the mine versus torpedo theory for example. Those arguments, in addition to all the many other elements of the overall picture, must always be fully presented and reasoned in order to allow readers to draw their own conclusions.

In this book, the text, photography and excellent (as always) illustrations by Ken Marschall are confined to 56 pages. Quite frankly, that is not enough room for any single great shipwreck - let alone five! Easy to see why I was left wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Young people need modern heroes - Robert Ballard is real........2003-12-01

Robert Ballard is one of the few genuine adventurer - hero models available to young people of the 21st Century. He is is incapable of being boring. He's somehow interesting even when he's talking about a can of paint. He has manifold unquestioned achievements, both scientific and spectacular in the public eye. His flair for photography and for commissioning or selecting exciting paintings of underwater scenes is unparalleled. His feeling for developing memorable themes, in this case lost ships, is gripping for both adults who allow their imaginations to seized by large events effectively told, as well as children.

At times one hears unjustified carping from scientists at Ballard's role as a popularizer. At others, not unreasonable arguments are raised that some of his books don't offer enough credit to others. I have known Ballard from the time of his PhD dissertation at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and onwards. I prefer to interpret Ballard's telling of major stories with simplifications as part of his ability to reach and affect large audiences, including young people who have become one of his major targets and goals in later life. Kids simply don't have the life experience and maturity to weigh all nuances of complex phenomena like scientific and exploration discovery.

Ballard has made extraordinary efforts with his Jason outreach programs to enliven science education for school children, facilitating realtime "exploration" opportunities to hundreds of thousands of young people. Ballard has a sense of personal ethics (refreshing in a "me" generation), being reluctant, for example, to allow souvenirs to be retrieved from the Titanic and other wrecks. Even though one can argue scientific and other value for such retrieval, I attribute to him sense of purpose and principle along with other unusual qualities as a person and author.

5 out of 5 stars A look at lost liners you never even knew about.......2003-02-14

I accidentally ordered this children's book from my son's school book fair, but I really love it. I wanted the book Lost Liners also by Bob Ballard. The paintings in Ghost Liners are wonderful and the narrative is interesting and also sad at times. I didn't even know about many of the other sea disasters. My son did read the book, but I'm the one who enjoyed it the most. The haunting illustrations are, themselves, worth the price of the book.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Little Book.......2000-03-23

This was a pretty good little book for the money. However, it was largely a slimmed-down version of Lost Liners, which I highly recommend. Some new pictures were featured, but much of it was rehash.

5 out of 5 stars Great pictures and text.......1999-11-20

Awesome pictures! Ken Marschall did a wonderful job with the illustrations, and the photographs were nice, too. The text explained clealy what had happened to each ship, and the controversy about some of them. I really learned something from this book.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC IN THIS GENRE.......2006-07-31

This book was first published in 1951 and has been updated periodically since. This is the 1982, forth edition being reviewed. The photos are in black and white but quite good. The book gives a good overview of the history of this particular breed, it's care, breeding, training, grooming all all inbetween. This is one of the most complete works addressing a single breed I know of. For those who love this particular breed, this is a book you should really own. Over the past twenty years, the breed standards have changes somewhat (showing), unfortunately, but this does not distract from this work at all. For the history of the breed alone, this work is well worth the money. Recommend this one highly.

      Book Description

Lar Hothem's first four books on this subject have been great sellers, and Book V, the first of the series in full color, will sell even better with nearly as many photographs as the first two books combined, and no repeats from any of the other books! There are over 2,150 full-color photographs featuring thousands of specimens from our ancient past. Hothem, widely known for his research and publications in the field of Indian artifacts, gives the collector all the necessary facts about each item featured, such as important details, size, date, location found, and current collector value. Once again this book covers the artifacts found in the heartland of North America, with its primary emphasis on the more common, readily available types, not the museum pieces virtually never seen or found. A new feature of this volume is a section on artifact record keeping. A present-day treasury documenting America's past! AUTHORBIO: Lar Hothem is a well-known expert in the field of Indian arrowheads and artifacts. His popular series, Indian Artifacts of the Midwest series has now added its fifth volume. His other titles include Indian Axes Related Stone Artifacts, Indian Pipes, Arrowheads Projectile Points, and Indian Trade Relics. REVIEW: This is the fifth book in Hothem's popular series, and it's loaded with hundreds of types of artifacts. The Paleo, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian Periods are covered. Collecting tips are also provided. This is the first in the series to be featured in full-color, and the photo details are sharp! -Edward Teagues

2 out of 5 stars Nice descriptions but no color photos........1999-09-02

The descriptions and price estimates were helpful. The complete lack of color photos, except for the cover, was an extreme disapointment. The photos ranged from average to poor quality and were of limited value in indentifying artifacts. I feel the book description should have clearly noted the lack of color photos.

5 out of 5 stars Identification of a Recently Aquired Treasure.......1997-11-01

One week ago I went to do some house hunting and found something I wasn't looking for. While going through the house I came upon a large collection of Indian Artifacts. I knew almost nothing about them but susspected they were highly valuable. The next day an estate auction was held and I purchased the collection. Upon searching the internet for some information it became obvious what the best source was for identification of my midwest collection, Lar Hothem's book "Indian Artifacts of the Midwest." I purchased the book and was able to quickly identify many of the pieces that I knew nothing about. The book was written so a "layman" like myself could easily understand and identify many of the the basic artifacts. The quality photographs added to the pleasure of my learning. I was very pleased to realize the age, almost 10,000 years, and value of my collection. Thanks to such a thorough and readable source I now find myself hooked on the collecting and identifying of very interesting artfacts left in my area so long ago.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Light on History or Descriptions.......2001-04-27

The book contains excellent, black and white actual-size photographs of points and blades from the Eastern United States. The photos are labeled with the point name, approximate archeological period, typical states in which found, and approximate value to collectors.

There are only four pages of general information text. There are no descriptions of material types associated with the photos.

For someone interested in information on point methodology, material types, or significant historical information, the book will be a major disappointment. Additionally, though the title is "Flint Arrowheads & Knives of the North American Indian" I could find only three pages containing point types found in the Northern Western United States.

For Eastern US collectors, the photos may be of some interest, but for a novice artifact hunter out West, information in the book is virtually non-existent.

3 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners.......2000-06-25

Compared to other books in this field, this one is lacking for the avid collecter. It is a very good book for the beginner because it covers the most common types of points pretty well. The pictures and discriptions are as good as most in this field.

Paul Robeson, the towering six-foot six athlete, orator, actor, singer, intellectual, and activist, was arguably one of the most simultaneously loved and loathed American personalities of the 20th century. This collection, edited by George Mason University professor Jeffrey Stewart to serve as a companion to a traveling exhibition marking the centennial anniversary of his birth on April 9, 1898, brings together 18 scholars and historians to the most detailed and balanced look at Robeson to date.

Francis C. Harris details Robeson's career as an multilettered athlete at Rutgers University, where he endured gang tackles, a dislocated shoulder, and a broken nose. In "Paul Robeson, Musician," Doris Evans McGinty and Wayne D. Shirley highlight the centrality of Negro spirituals and folk songs in Robeson's repertoire. Robeson biographer Martin Duberman chronicles the social and sexual implications of Robeson's portrayals of Shakespeare's Othello, while Charles Musser reveals the complexities of Robeson's friendship with playwright Eugene O'Neill as well as his difficulties with African American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux.

The entries dealing with Robeson's political activities show his courage to speak out against injustice and the price he paid for it. Lawyer-writer Derrick Bell examines Robeson's "small service" to the cause of African American justice. David Levering Lewis looks at Robeson's deep, albeit naive views on the Soviet Union, which dovetailed into his support of American workers, the subject of Mark D. Naison's contribution.

Augmented by several rare, invaluable photographs and portraits, Paul Robeson: Artist and Citizen is as grand and magnificent as its subject. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Provocative essays, never-before-published photographs, Robeson-inspired artwork, and a comprehensive chronology are the pleasures of this first-rate text. Developed as a companion to a multimedia exhibition celebrating Robeson's centennial birthday, _Artist and Citizen_ is a must-read. Curator and editor Jeffrey Stewart has succeeded in providing a careful, comprehensive, sophisticated, yet accessible view of one of the major figures of the 20th century. Essayists include those whom we readily associate with Robeson and his era: Lloyd L. Brown, Martin Duberman, David Levering Lewis, and John Hope Franklin. The reader also learns from those who bring the unique perspectives of their fields such as economist Julianne Malveaux, film scholars Ed Guerrero and Mark A. Reid, legal scholar and social critic Derrick Bell, and photography historian Deborah Willis among others. The essayists explore Robeson's upbringing, athletic exploits, political philosophies and alliances, artistic career, and commitment to social justice with an eye on understanding Robeson's challenges and legacies, his life as a "work of art and politics," and the meaning of this hero and icon. In the introduction, Stewart stakes out his claims for the book. "We see ourselves as heirs to Robeson not in following any particular ideology that he espoused, but in practicing the intellectual integrity he lived...Hence, in this volume is a chorus of diverse voices, not all of whom sing Robeson's praises, but which rather raise the kinds of concerns that he himself voiced during his long and fruitful life." _Paul Robeson: Artist and Citizen_ lives up to Stewart's claims. It is an essential text for anyone interested in Robeson, race and class matters, art and politics, or the remarkable life lived.
