As pointed out in the other review, Michelin books are organized alphabetically. While they may be good for laying out a web site they are frustrating and inefficient to use to plan a trip. Unless you travel alphabetically.

Great Guide to Sicily.......2002-09-14

The Green Guide Sicily was added to this series in 1998 and gives you all the information you need for a trip to Sicily.

Sicily is not just the birthplace of the Mafia that Hollywood has led you to believe. It's a sleepy place untouched by tourist throngs with a wealth of beautiful Greek ruins. I visited in July 2001 and used this book as my main travel book. As in all the Michelin guides the cities and tourist attractions are listed are organized alphabetically without any geographic considerations so you need to refer to a map to find an unfamiliar place. There are limited maps printed at the beginning of the book. Hours of opening with telephone numbers are given at the back of the book for the major attractions. This is critically important; you don't want to drive across the island to arrive at place that's closed for the 3 to 4 hour midday siesta. Tourist amenities are limited in Sicily, I stayed at one of the best hotels in Palermo (according to the Italy Red Guide) and it was awful. In some remote places finding a place to buy cool drinks or snacks is a challenge that Americans used to having convenience stores everywhere will notice. The upside of this is that there are so few tourists that you get a unique perspective on the places you see. I spent 90 minutes at the superb Greek temple at Segesta during which I was the only person there for most of the time. There weren't many people at the Selunente or Agrigento Greek temples either. The guide refrains from gossipy editorializing, sticking to one or two pages of facts and picture or two of important sites. There is a useful system of prioritizing sites; Three stars is a must see, one star for sites worth visiting if you're in the area or have extra time on your hands. I found that I usually agreed.

I'm building an internet site all about Sicily. I found this book so useful in my photographic tours of Sicily. It is a book that who love Sicily might not to miss. I appreciated particularly the advices about where to eat. It's simply ... complete!

A chronicle about one woman's effort in the struggle for human rights in Harlem during the years of the Civil Rights Movement. The story of Ora Mobley-Sweeting's life is rich with positive images, but also contains dire memories of the challenges of the times. Being from a prominent black family in the south, she reveals an intimate look at the experience of many African Americans who moved from the south to the north for social and economic freedom. She gives a unique insight into the politics of the local community and a clear depiction of the impact one community can have on a society. The personal observance of the Civil Rights Movement is viewed from a northerners' perspective. Emphasis is placed on the social and political struggles in the north. She feels that the northern efforts in the civil right's struggle have not been given adequate attention by historians. She also emphasizes how the fight for independence in Africa influenced and encouraged African Americans in the fight for civil rights in America. Ora Mobley-Sweeting's life of dedication to the community won her many awards. Her book is insightful and informative.

This is a thorough guide to the metroplex, at least u feel the authors have actually been to the region, which is not always the case in books of this kind. If you are planning a trip to dallas, then i believe this guide will give you a good overview of the city and environs..there is actually a great deal to see in the metroplex, expecially Dallas' Nasher Collection and NorthPark Mall..yes, this mall is worth a visit, this is dallas after all..and Fort Worth's Kimbel Museum, and Carter Museum, oh and the zoo..yes, fort worths zoo is superior to dallas'..all that money and dallas still has a mediocre zoo..anyway, consider picking up this guide if ur headed to the area..

This is a good starting point for someone who is planning a Dallas/Fort Worth trip. It includes info on the surrounding suburbs as well. The lodging section is lacking; room quality is seldom mentioned, and the information given is no more helpful than the hotel brochures. This is a "just the facts" guide; no author's opinions or insider tips.However,there are good maps and getting around hints.

American role totally absent.......2002-01-06

This is certainly a well-written and thought-inspiring book. However, the implications of the book, if there is any, seems questionable.

Throughout the book the author is enumerating how other nations, the Germans, Russians, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Hindi, Spanish, Arabs, Israelites, etc., are undeniably responsible for so many ism's and turmoils in the past century. Strangely the Americans, the most important character in the 20th century drama, who had played a critical role in moulding the world order and also benefitted most from it the 20th century, are not discussed in an individual chapter. The keyword of the whole book, rage and ism's, seem not applicable to the Americans. This is unfair to the the listed nations as well as to the Americans. It occurs to me that the author is trying to hypothesize American moral superiority: we're immune to these ism's, and bear no responsibility for the chaos in the past century.

What I'm expecting there is a second volume of the book to enable the author to detail the American role before and after WWII. What are the Americans? The only angels, pacifists, aliens, or supermen who worked with God to save mankind, or just another nation who should bear its due responsibility for this "cruel, cruel world". What did they do in the past century. Have the Americans alone built world order, but all the other nations simply added to the turmoils and war atrocities? Or, the present world order is the joint efforts of all nations including the Germans, the Russians, etc.? I hope the author can give me an answer.

Excellent Reading!.......2000-04-10

I've always enjoyed history, so picking up this book to read was in my plans all along. Still, once I started reading, I was not disappointed in the book or in the author's quality of writing. The information is presented in a clear, well written manner and the author does a great job in offering a book for readers like myself just interested in reading of historical events and not necessarily studying for a class.

Modra & Roberts started across the nation & recorded many of Amwerica's more eccentric gardens. This is a charming little book, impish, ironic & crass. What kind of people place metal cut-out characters at various points on their lawns so they appear to be having a conversation? Who lives in a house by a lake where the front & back yards are carpeted with animal statues, old mailboxes & year-round Christmas decorations? Who is the Pink Flamingo King? END

I expected a lot more from this book than I got. I myself have seen much weirder lawns than are included in this book. It sometimes appears to be more of a comment on class-driven levels of taste than on personal weirdness and eccentricity, and I didn't like that. Interesting to browse, but not worth the price, in my opinion. For this type of book, "Weird Rooms" is much better.

I EXPECTED IT TO BE FUNNY BUT THE STORIES WERE A REAL SUPRISE. THE TEXAS TORNADO, THE MAN WITH THE BEDS WERE MY FAVORITE. THIS BOOK WOULD BE A GREAT PRESENT FOR ANYONE STARTING THEIR OWN GARDEN.
