Mahatma, in Sanskrit, means "Great Soul." Mohandas K. Gandhi earned this name by dedicating his life to helping the millions of people of India free themselves from British rule. Gandhi believed in patient, peaceful resistance; satyagraha, a combination of truth, love, and firmness. His method of revolt sent waves around the world, influencing many activists including Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, Jr. In his lifetime, Gandhi was a London-trained lawyer, founder of several newspapers, and founder of self-sufficient communities called ashrams. His career as a rights activist began in South Africa in 1893. He staged numerous protests and demonstrations by going to jail--sometimes voluntarily--and fasting. Everywhere he went, he impressed people with his willingness to sacrifice himself for the good of others. Important Biography for Young People.......2005-04-20

I taught this book to my 8th graders last year and I was delighted with its combination of clarity and detail. It's sometimes hard to find biography geared to middle school, but this book is perfect. Its pictures and text communicate to young people what motivated Gandhi and got to the heart of what made this geat man tick.Also, it's a good idea to teach young people what and who motivated Martin Luther King,Jr. I just wish it was available in paperback.

This is a wonderful book for children that not only gives historical information and biographical material about Mohandas Gandhi but also offers ideas for practical experiments to enable students to further explore the concepts of freedom and nonviolence. As a teaching artist/musician I am currently using this book with a class of African American 2nd graders as part of a music residency called "Freedom Through Peaceful Change."

Our daughter loves this book.......2007-09-13

Our daughter is 18 months old. This has been one of her favorite books for the last few months. She likes all of the books in the Otto series. The Otto books are filled with bright colors, silliness and a message at the end. The books generally start out with things not going Otto's way, but as Otto keeps trying, eventually things work out in the end. Anytime I find a book that captivates my daughter, I have to give it five stars.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves this book. She laughs at all of the strange things (two shoes, a cootie bug) that Otto puts in his birthday cake. Lately, I've been buying her mostly books with longer stories than this so I would probably recommend this for a 2 year old or older chiildren who don't like long books.

Spot the Dog books are a favourite with my girls. They love the simple stories that they can relate to (hiding, baking a cake, playing with others etc) and the lift-the-flaps always bring screams of delight even though we've read them many many times. As they grow I'm sure they'll be one of the books they learn to read with. The words are simple and the font easy to read. Lovely books to cuddle up with your children on your lap. They are also big enough to hold up and read to them as they sit in back seat on car trips.

Patch is greatly appealing. We've been enjoying patch books since my daughter was first born. The stories are short and interesting for little ones. The illustrations are delightfully perfect! Good information on drying plants.......2006-07-13

Excellent detailed information on many different ways to dry flowers including charts on how long flowers take to dry in different methods and which methods should be used for which plants. This takes up about half the book and is very useful for those frustrated with the few miserable pages that most books give on drying.
The rest of the book is taken up with a variety of flower displays for different styles and seasons. Instructions are given but they are fairly basic such as "add hydrangea from front and center' For a beginner these instructions may not be sufficient to achieve the results show without a lot of perseverance. The Majority of the photographs are good, helpful and easy to use as guides. A few however concentrate more on the scene than the display making it difficult to duplicate. Overall it's a very good book.
My major complaint about this book is the mixing of displays and instructions into the chapters on drying rather than concentrating them in one section of the book. It means you have to keep paging through to find what you want rather than just looking in one section.

This book is great for a beginner. I went to the library to find a book that would tell me how to dry my valentine roses. I so thourghly enjoyed this book I am going to buy it for myself as well as for others as a gift. Not only does it tell you how to dry flowers, but it demonstrates step by step how to grow them, and different ways to arrange them. It has beautiful pictures in it with arrangements from elegant, country to modern - something for everyone. I highly recommend it. It makes a lovely tabletop book as well as a reference book. The author Cathy Miller has designed flower arrangements for presidents throughout the years, even for President Clinton who has allergies. Cathy has designed the flower arrangements for him encased in glass!
