I received the book in excellent condition and quite fast! Would use this company again without a doubt!
Lonely Planet Sri Lanka Travel Guide.......2005-08-15
I barely give "Lonely Planet Sri Lanka" 5 stars as they have some nice color photos of different activities and areas in Sri Lanka, they also have good individual area maps though straight black and white not topographical or color as they have in "Insight Guide Sri Lanka". Basically a very nicely laid out guide with just about all the information you would hope to expect or need.
The Pearl of the Orient .......2005-01-19
Sri Lanka is an island of exceptional beauty -- but there is trouble in paradise. For two decades the island has been torn apart by violence between the two largest ethnic groups, Buddhist Sinhalese and Hindu Tamils. One of my most vivid memories of Colombo was a march of Buddhist monks carrying signs with political sentiments such as, "Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country." The Tamil Tigers, on their part, will probably be remembered as virtuoso suicide bombers. So much for "tolerant" Asian religions.
Most of the violence has now ceased and the traveler need not be concerned with it, although traveling by land from Colombo to Jaffna in the north one has to pass along a dirt highway lined in places with minefields. Military fortresses will also be encountered along main highways.
I'm not much of a beach fan, although that's why most tourists go to Sri Lanka. Given the ravages of the tsunami most of the beach resorts on the South and East coasts have probably been damaged. So this is an excellent time to go to Sri Lanka to see the beautiful tea estates in the cool, cloudy hill country and the Buddhist monuments near the center of the island. For the sand and sea set, some decent beach resorts near Colombo on the West coast were probably not affected by the Tsunami.
The Lonely Planet Guide sums up the many attractions of this beautiful country. As always, it includes reliable information on history and practical matters plus sidebars on interesting subjects such as birds, turtles, train schedules, and 101 uses for a coconut.

Great guide.......2004-11-18
I traveled to Sri Lanka for New Year's 2004, and found the information contained to be extremely helpful. Especially the accommodation information. When I arrived to Sri Lanka, I had nothing planned - and was going to hire a driver to take me around. Finding a driver, we sat down to plan the trip, book the hotels etc... I was able to compare the prices listed in the Lonely Planet Guide with those quoted and used the book to bargain the prices down - it was great! Most of the stuff in the guide was tourist orientated - where I prefer to take the road less traveled. I definitely recommend getting this guide before you head over - and read it over a few times before getting there, it will help you out heaps!
useful and informative.......2003-12-07
I used the latest edition of this book (published August 2003) while travelling around Sri Lanka for a month in November 2003. I found the information in the book to be accurate and easy to find. Like most Lonely Planet guide books its strength is detailed logistical information such as bus and train times, accommodation and opening times. The only negative point is that sometimes the historical and background information is a little vague and lacks specific dates. Still I would thoroughly recommend this book for any independent traveller in Sri Lanka. It will save you time and money and help you enjoy your holiday even more.

Excellent value.......2001-03-02
I found this little book to be a good value- there is so little available on the languages of Sri Lanka- There a lots of little cultural tips as well- An audio tape would be a good accessory-
Not very useful.......2000-05-01
This little book is not very useful for learning such a complex language. There is nothing about the alphabet and the pronunciation guide is confusing.
Not a Good Way to Learn Singhalese.......2000-02-29
Right before my trip to Sri Lanka I purchased this book. I find the culture and language fascinating, but I was incredibly frustrated by my lack of understanding of Singhalese. Nearly every word in the Singhalese language is at least twice as long as any word in English.
For a person w/ no previous experience w/ Singhalese this book will be too cursory to provide much benefit. I don't recommend taking it w/ you to Sri Lanka unless you have nothing else. On the other hand, it doesn't cost much, and is probably worth its price tag.
When you're in Sri Lanka you might try to take some impromptu language lessons from a friendly stranger. You'll get more from it.

- health care
- what to expect from the pet
- basic training
As our series expands and focuses on different kinds of pets, the emphasis remains on making the pet a companion. In addition, owners of more unusual pets will particularly appreciate the expert advice in these books because professional care for their animals may be difficult to come by. Happy, Healthy Pet guides are rich with professional quality color photos and are designed to be enjoyable and easy to learn from.
Customer Reviews:
A missed occasion.......2006-04-24
I own an ACD and am interested to know as much as possible about this fascinating kind of dog, in terms of behaviour and peculiarities.
I have to say that, apart a couple of info in the first 3 chapters (roughly 35 pages), the rest of the book has only 20 good colour pictures of ACD and nothing else focused on this dog!
It is more a normal guide to a happy healthy dog than a book on ACD. It would have been much more correct to specify this general approach.
The price is right but this is not enough.
Half on ACDs, half on dogs in general.......2003-07-31
I enjoyed this book, but didn't realize until I received it that only half the book is devoted to ACDs. The other half is about dog/puppy care in general and seems to be universal to this series of books. Good information, just not specific to ACDs as I had hoped.
Lots of pictures of adorable ACD puppies, as well as full-grown dogs. Good information about techniques for keeping an ACD busy and active, too. Medium-size puppy Kong toys filled with kibble, peanut butter and topped with a treat have helped my ACD stay in her crate all night without complaint, and saved my sanity!
Another quibble, the book tends to assume that you selected your puppy from a reputable breeder. The author doesn't seem to acknowledge owners who rescue pups, who have found an ACD pup by chance, or who have a mixed-breed, part-ACD pup.
An excellent read for the cattle dog owner.......2001-09-27
This book really covers the temperment of the breed. Offers training and what to expect of living with a cattledog. I had a hard time putting the book down.
Excellent book especially on training!.......1999-06-14
As a first time Australian Cattle Dog Owner we were unprepared at how to care for and deal with the cattle dog that adopted us. This book has lots of good information on caring for cattle dogs and is the only one that had information in it on leash breaking our dog. All in all an excellent book for people new to dogs and Australian cattle dogs in particular.
A very informative read for owners new to the breed........1998-04-23
As a new owner of an ACD pup, I felt that I needed to know more information about the breed as a whole so that I could obtain insight on how to deal with my dog. This book was very informative and gave a good description of the ACD. I feel now that I better know how to handle my dog, but also how to make him the happiest. It gave great ideas on how to spend quality time with your dog using activites that they enjoy. I feel that our bond has definitely improved after reading this book. Read the book, get ready for some fun, and by all means go buy a can of tennis balls.

This book was not what I expected. It would be good for a new collector, but not an established one. It leaves a lot to be desired, especially photos of badges.

Burpee has created a truly encyclopedic, but non-intimidating, guide to organic vegetable gardening that can be used and appreciated by anyone, whether or not they've ever stuck a seed in the ground. All the essential information is here--how to condition the soil, how and where to plant, sprouting schedules, what kind of yield to expect from each plant variety, and harvesting tips--in beautiful, bountiful, illustrated detail; the book's largest section, "Plant Portraits," contains explanations of the many cultivars of each vegetable and herb. If you're a novice vegetable gardener or new to organic gardening and can only afford one gardening guide, this may be your best value.

Great overview book.......2007-06-09
This book is great if you're a beginner gardener, and want just one book to sit down and read that covers all aspects of gardening. You'll want to go on an buy other books that go into more detail on specific topics, but this is a great place to start, and one to keep on the shelf.
It is presented as a gardening book should be - a large hardcover with lots of glossy colour photographs.
Chapters are:
1) Growing you own
2) Getting Started
3) Garden Tools & Equipment
4) Improving the soil
5) Laying out the Garden
6) Planting the Garden
7) Caring for the Garden
8) Coping with Garden Problems
Should be called the Coffee Table Encyclopedia of Gardening.......2007-03-10
I am so impressed with this big, beautiful book! The photos are inspiring, and the technical aspects are thoroughly covered. I love the historic background of each vegetable and herb.
I think there is literally everything I ever needed to know about vegetable gardening from seed germination, through care and feeding, to harvest. Detailed charts outline fertilizer, pests, water, soil conditions, and planting and harvest times.
I keep it on my coffee table and flip through it daily just to enjoy the photos and learn some new fact.
You will not be disappointed with this book!
Gardners Dictionary.......2006-10-31
I am a new gardener and this book has helped so much! I look everything up in it. RIght down to problems with plant to how much water each plant gets. It has a guide to all plants and great pictures. Also has tips for gardening.
Well Organized, Comprehensive, Excellent Layout.......2002-08-14
Burpee's "The Complete Vegetable and Herb Gardener: A Guide to Growing Your Garden Organically" is fantastic. In addition to what Burpee lists on the back cover of what is inside the book, there are also many easy-reading tables that contain excellent information such as the vitamin(s) that each vegetable contains, different cultivars, plant PH needs, watering needs per week, crop yields, etc. Many interesting tidbits.
The layout is so wonderful, one does not feel overwhelmed with all of the information that is in the book!
Vegatable Gardening Made Really Easy.......2001-11-02
Very similar in content and structure to Ortho's Complete Guide to Vegtables. The difference comes in the experience the writer has growing and maitaining the various plants. I find using both books gives different perspectives for growing and caretaking of plants but conatins the same basic information. For instance the Ortho book has better Garden Setup and maintenance data, and raw data on the various gardening aspects like fertilizer and pest eradiction. The Burpee book focuses on plant and cultivar details a little better. The book is filled with plenty high quality pictures of plants and their fruits using multiple pictures of various cultivars within plant families.
The book is geared for both beginners in gardening and the handy do it yourselfer types. Chapters progress you through the steps from site selection and plant selection to harvesting, crop rotating and soil conditioning over winter and indoor greenhouse seed starting. The book also contains references to various cultivars within vegtable species, so a beginner gardener could not only successfully select and grow well know vegtables, but could also grow and use the odd often hard to find fresh herbs.
I consistently flip between both this book and Ortho's book. I find using them in this manner makes the information extracted complimentary and thorough.

Advice for veggie growers.......2007-01-05
This book is great. Ortho really does a great job on their gardening books.
Lots of advice for growing vegetables in Summer, Spring and Fall. Full of information from prepping the garden and soil to harvesting. Information also on growing herbs. Very easy to understand. It also has lots of illustrations for those of us who like visuals.
All the basics in one place.......2006-10-30
If I had to recommend only one general guide to vegetable and edible gardening, this would be it. In addition to information on vegetables, this 224 page guide includes sections on planning your garden; herbs; fruits, berries & nuts; and dealing with pests & diseases.
In additon to a fairly standard encyclopedia of vegetables, I especially found the guide to pruning fruit trees, brambles (blackberries, raspberries, etc.), and grapes superior to any descriptions I've found elsewhere. The instructions are easy to read with useful diagrams that actually make sense. I've used the pruning advice to greatly increase my raspberry and grape harvest - much to the envy of my neighbors!
A good basic, no-nonsense kitchen gardening book.......2006-04-19
If the focus of your garden is vegetables or fruit, you need this book. Concise but informative, this book combines and updates three or four older books (some of which were hard to find in their original editions) by the same publisher into one handy, easily browsed book of techniques and varieties. The end result is a reference suitable for both beginners and experienced gardeners.
The book has four main sections: vegetables, herbs, temperate fruits, and tropical fruits. All sections are very well illustrated with mouth-watering photographs, and the techniques mentioned are illustrated decently well where they aren't well-described. A long list of seed producers is available in the back of the book, including URLs, and there's a whole chapter on seasons and how to take advantage of them. The tropical fruit section is particularly helpful for those in temperate zones who might wish to grow citrus or bananas.
If the book has a weakness it's the lack of mention of alternative gardening techniques. While a guide to basic hydroponics would be above and beyond the call of duty and information on biodynamics would be simply ridiculous, there is no section on organic gardening. It may be that it would expand the scope of the book somewhat unacceptably, but that's still a serious omission for a gardening book published in 2004. It's not a dealkiller though.
Overall, this is an excellent value for gardening books from a long-standing book series. If you can have only one book on vegetable gardening techniques, this is a strong contender.
Very complete and detailed.......2005-11-22
This helpful guide contains instructions for growing fruit and herbs as well as vegetables. It gives climate and soil requirements, and detailed growing instructions. It also discusses various species. This is the only vegetable gardening book I've come across that also includes extensive information on growing fruit, including all the major species that grow in the US, as well as semi-tropical species such as oranges for warmer climates. It even covers nut tress! The section on herbs is very large and complete. It even tells how to pollinate your own plants, when you have only a few. There are many excellent color pictures and illustrations. If you grow vegetables, fruit, or herbs, you need this book!

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
